introduction
“You can’t reallY saY what is BeautiFul aBout a place But the iMage oF the place will reMain vividlY with You”
Shang Xian Fang, a red-brick shikumen compound covers an area of around 6,000 square meters, and features four lines of 52 lane houses which are 3.6 meters wide and as much as 15 meters deep.
As a unique east-meets-west architectural style, a result of the booming real estate development in modern Shanghai with white Baroque-style facade, it is located opposite the red-brick former Municipal Council Building of the French concession, now the Shanghai Central Plaza, on Huaihai Road.
The design for Shanghai Shang Xian Square seeks to create a new landmark for the thriving Huangpu District, extend the growing neighborhood, and respond globally to the inimitable elements of the city such as the Shikumen architecture and the “hyper modern” lifestyle. The site, enclosed by Huaihai Road road on the south and Jinling road on the north, places the buildings adjacent to an active park, residential neighborhoods and retail streets. The multi-use project encompasses a diverse grouping of connective programs including, serviced apartments, a boutique hotel, villas, retail, and public space.
A monumental ‘urban gateway’ or “canyon” crosses the tower acting as a vertical street. This gateway encourages pedestrian flow into the site, houses the internal vertical circulation and is illuminated at night to craft the symbol of this permeable super block. In addition, a series of bridges and vertical roof gardens subtly connect the different portions of the building and populate the project with a series of “vertical public spaces”. As a result, the project connects the existing compound to the new development using natural street life qualities, visual connections and maximum access to daylight in order to enhance public attractiveness and activate social interaction.Shang Xian Square will form a harmonious relationship with its context through connective streets, local materials, program adjacencies and massing relationships with the city fabric and primary boulevards.
