Prayer Of the DayPresider: almighty God, we are taught by your word that all our doings

without love are worth nothing. send your holy spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue; through Jesus christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen.

The Proclaiming of the WordKids can go with their teachers for Sunday School; they will rejoin us at the Peace.

First Reading Jeremiah 1.4-10

now the word of the Lord came to me saying, ‘Before i formed you in the womb i knew you, and before you were born i consecrated you; i appointed you a prophet to the nations.’ Then i said, ‘ah, Lord God! truly i do not know how to speak, for i am only a boy.’ But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “i am only a boy”; for you shall go to all to whom i send you, and you shall speak whatever i command you. Do not be afraid of them, for i am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.’ Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, ‘now i have put my words in your mouth. see, today i ap-point you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.’

At the conclusion of the passage, the reader says, The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 71.1-6 All remain seated. Please join in singing the refrain.

The story of Jeremiah’s call to preach, which ap-pears immediately after the superscription, is the first of many stories about his life. This is a job that Jeremiah neither seeks nor welcomes. Citing his young age, he objects. God, however, will not let Jeremiah’s youth stand in the way of sending a message that the people of Israel need to hear, even if they do not want to hear it. Jeremiah would not be alone for God regu-larly seeks young people for divine work. Jacob, Joseph, Miriam, Gideon, Joshua, Samuel, David, Dan-iel, Shadrack, Meshack, Abednego, Mary, Jarius’ daughter, Timothy, and Jesus at age twelve were all young when they too encountered the divine. Reluctantly, Jeremiah says yes to God’s call.

Second Reading Hebrews 12.18-29you have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. (for they could not endure the order that was given, ‘if even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death.’ indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, ‘i tremble with fear.’) But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of abel. see that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven! at that time his voice shook the earth; but now he has promised, ‘yet once more i will shake not only the earth but also the heaven.’ This phrase ‘yet once more’ indicates the removal of what is shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire.

At the conclusion of the passage, the reader says, The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

‘Hebrews’ point seems to be that in a cosmos without such a basic

“religious” distinction between heaven and earth, divine service

of God necessarily goes “outside the city gate”

of even the heavenly Jerusalem to serve those in

need. Heavenly worship and responding to the

needs of the neighbor are one and the same. The

model here, of course, is the incarnation of the

pre-existent Word in the person and work of the

high priest of this sacred/profane liturgy, Jesus. In short, Christian worship

is a liturgy (service) indelibly marked by the cross and the cruciform

life of Christian discipleship.’–Erik Heen

The Holy Gospel Luke 13.10-17Gospeller: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.Gospeller: The holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus christ according to Luke. All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. and just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. she was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, ‘Woman, you are set free from your ailment.’ When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, ‘There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.’ But the Lord answered him and said, ‘you hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? and ought not this woman, a daughter of abraham whom satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?’ When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.

Gospeller: The Gospel of christ. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

‘[T]his is a story about the role and function of our religious traditions, our claims about what could and should be practiced on the “Sabbath” or who is allowed within the walls of our synagogues and religious communities. Special religious practices may become hindrances to inclusion. We must be diligent to recognize what theological ideas we hold dear that disallow full participation from others. And, Luke’s Jesus could not be clearer or more consistent on this point. He’s no Sabbath breaker! He operates well within Jewish tradition of the day. But he is also not one to allow the tradition to exclude people from access to the community and the potential for their healing. Many in the crowd agree. These are stories about community. What kind of community do we want to be? And, do religious tra-ditions help us to become that kind of community or do they hinder our desires? Will our traditions hinder the “daughter of Abra-ham,” in our day, from joining us today?’

affirMatiOn Of faithPresider: Let us affirm our faith in Jesus christ the son of God. All: Though he was divine, he did not cling to equality with God, but made himself nothing. Taking the form of a slave, he was born in human likeness. He humbled himself and was obedient to death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God has raised him on high, and given him the name above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and every voice proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

sanctus

Presider: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your son. for in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the virgin Mary, to be the saviour and redeemer of the world. in him, you have de-livered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. in him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “ take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

after supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Robert McDonaldPriest in the

Western Arctic, 1913This week we honour the memo-ry of robert McDonald, an an-glican priest who ministered in the western arctic from 1862 un-til his retirement forty years later. he based himself at fort McPherson, a trading post in the yukon, and journeyed west-wards into alaska, ministering to the various kutchin tribes who inhabited the region. his greatest achievement as mission-ary and pastor was to train and support native ministers. he re-garded himself more as a resource

for their work than as a master clergyman who had to keep all authority in his own hands. he also proved to be a serious eth-nographer, with several ground-breaking studies of native life and language to his credit. McDonald was part Ojibway through his mother, and because of this “mixed blood” background his superiors in the church Missionary society treat-ed him as a second-class priest. Their reports on work in the arc-tic always referred to “the euro-pean missionaries — and arch-deacon McDonald.” he knew of this prejudice and deeply resent-ed it, but he never let it affect his

love of christ or deter him from the work of helping native people come to feel the same love. and that is why we remember him to-day — because he was an angli-can priest whose devotion to the gospel surmounted prejudice for the sake of enabling the native people of the arctic to become full partners in the priesthood of Jesus christ.

MonnicaMother of Augustine

of Hippo, 387This week we remember Mon-nica, a woman of fourth-century north africa and the mother of augustine of hippo. she was a devout christian, regular in her prayers and careful in raising her children to be christians as well. however, her eldest son augus-tine wandered away from the church in his youth and came under the spell of an outlaw sect known as the Manichees. Mon-nica refused to give up on her son and tried to get others to argue him out of his infatuation with Manichean teachings. she once approached a bishop who told her that, given time, her son would certainly outgrow his false opinions. But Monnica would not be soothed and continued her entreaties. The bishop finally groaned: “Woman, go away from me now! as sure as you live, it is impossible that a son of such tears should perish!” augustine was embar-rassed by his mother, and when he decided to leave north africa and seek his fortune in italy, he tricked her so that she would not come with him. he ought to have known her better, for she eventu-ally showed up on his doorstep. By that time augustine had at last renounced the Manichees and was slowly moving back to-wards the church. Monnica had the supreme joy of beholding the fulfillment of her prayers at the easter vigil of the year 387, when augustine was baptized at

the basilica of Milan. shortly afterwards he de-cided to return to north africa with his mother, but while they were waiting for a ship to take them across the Mediterranean Monnica fell ill. it was soon clear that she was dying, and augus-tine became anxious, knowing she had always wanted to be bur-ied in north africa. she told him not to worry, saying: “nothing is far from God; i need not fear that he will know where to raise me up at the end of the world.” a few days later she died, at peace with God, the church, and her son.

AugustineBishop and Teacher, 430

augustine of hippo was a north african bishop who died in the year 430 — and a teacher of the faith whose thought has contin-ued to shape the mind and imag-ination of the western church ever since. augustine was raised a christian but wandered away from the church in his youth. his restless intellect and fierce ambition led him into a neo-christian cult and from his small home town in north africa to carthage, then to rome, and finally to the imperial capital of Milan. There he underwent a spiritual and intellectual crisis which brought him back to the church; he was baptized at Mi-lan in the year 387, at the age of thirty-three. shortly afterwards he resigned his post in the impe-rial government and returned to north africa, where he hoped to

live as a monk in company with his friends. But during a visit to the north african port of hippo regius he was seized by the con-gregation and forcibly ordained as a presbyter. a couple of years later he became their bishop and served them in this office until his death three and a half decades later. There is hardly an aspect of christian thought that augus-tine’s own thinking did not influ-ence. But his work as a theolo-gian grew out of his vocation as a pastor, and he usually would not address an issue unless it affected his flock or was raised by a cor-respondent. he was able to talk on many different levels at once, combining practical instruction, the interpretation of scripture, and theological insights of rare speculative power in a style of writing and speaking which had few equals in its day. augustine also possessed enormous personal charm, a quality which made all sorts of people take pleasure in his com-pany. This attractiveness may still be met and felt by those who choose to engage augustine’s life by reading what he wrote. in commemorating him today, the anniversary of his death in the year 430, we are not only remem-bering an influential intellect of the church. We are also honour-ing a whole person who gave his heart as well as his mind to the task of growing up, with others, “to the measure of the full stature of christ.”

Messiah CommonsThe idea of developing a “third space” at Messiah for people in our community to sit, drink coffee, work, or play continues to develop. conversations are happening with Thershold Ministries have begun to see about a possible placement of an evangelist to help us in the effort.

Messiah Marketanother plan in the works is to see whether it would be feesible to host a farmers’ market at Messiah one day a week. The idea is to become, again, a relevant centre of community life in this neighbourhood. Besides bringing people into contact with us, it would provide low-cost, fresh, local produce to our neighbours.
