What I understand about reflective learning

As far as I can tell, I add things in my portfolio every week, on every Thursday, we can meet our modules leader Mr. LEE, and so I will ask him questions if I have any difficulties when I work in my portfolio. When we talk about reflection the two ideas are looking back in time and looking at ourselves, which means we can look at our own reflection in the mirror.

Sometimes reflection will make me quite uncomfortable and difficult because I may need to change my ideas about what we think is true, what things are good or what things I like. The difference between describing an event and reflecting an event is, describing an event is always be impersonal or objective, and we use lots of passive structures and sentences and avoid using ‘I’ or ‘we’ but for reflective writing, we should try to make it more personal and subjective instead of objective.

To get an abstract idea, I take my working experience in the hotel restaurant, one day, I am the food runner, when I carrying a soup ready to serve on the guest’s table, suddenly the bow slipped with my hand and some of the hot soup splashed on the guest’s leg, luckily the guest had put the napkin on his leg. After that I need to reflect the process that I run the food and analyzed whether is my hand slippery or the bow. I though and reflected, and I realized that I didn’t dry my hand properly after I wash my hand. After I got the conclusion, I already remember I need to clean my hand properly after I wash my hand to prevent the same case happen again.

IntroductionPart A: ‘Reflective learning log’Step 5

The use of English as a global language

Language is the most important communication tools for human, however we also need a same language to communication with different people. Otherwise we can’t understand each other are talking about.English, I think it is the most common language in the world, most of the advanced country, for example USA, England and most of the European countries are also using English as their main language or second language. In the Asia country, they also forced to learn English as their second language from kindergarten and primary school.

English already become a global language in long time ago, all the fine book, software etc. are mostly written in English, so if I want to get those knowledge, I have to know English well to read those book and use those software. For the foreign businessman or foreign companies it is much more convenient that using only one official language instead of two or three language for meeting, speech etc. Otherwise I think it is a waste of time to translate to other language.

Furthermore, I think English is the easiest language to learn over the world, it only make up of 26 letters, unlike Chinese or Korean is very complex. So it is much easier to let different people to learn it fast and have much more potential to become the common language. A common language is really good to hold a fine global business community.

Training plan

I would like to become a hotel restaurant manager in seven years, I am currently working in the hotel industry over a year as a part time in Hong Kong. I finish a questionnaire called skill set and behavior assessment- general to improve myself.According to the questionnaire, I think I have enough knowledge about hotel industry, I usually apply my knowledge in my work place, if the guests have any problem I usually can solve it by myself. However I think I should try to agree more with people, sometime I am become egocentrism and never listen to others, so I need to become more friendly and I need to become more open to listen more opinion and make things better.

Secondly, I think I should gain more financial knowledge and commercial ability, I can borrow some book from the library or buy some reference book to read, discuss with my friends and exchange our opinions and knowledge.

Third, I am also weak at technical appreciation and use of equipment/tools/machinery for my areas and related areas, to train this part, I should read careful with the guild book before I use that machine, I need to know what function do the machine have and how to use those function.

Forth, I think I need to have a better planning time and management time, I usually work overtime, I don’t know how to manage my time to finish my work because I don’t have a good plan to work, so I need to learn it from my friends or ask my friends how do they manage their time, exchange our experience together.

As I said before I am a quite egocentrism, I don’t usually have compassion and care for others, but now, I know that having compassion and care for others is really important when we are working in the same place, so form now on, I will try to care my friends and colleague.

My personal language history

Early HistoryI was born in Hong Kong and my parents are also born in Hong Kong, however, they don’t usually speak Cantonese to me, they usually speak English to me, because they want me to start learning English when I was a little kid. They believe that it is easier to learn a language earlier instead of start learning from the school. When I grow up, I recognized that my English level is really better than my classmates. I am really happy that my parents teach me English when I am just a little kid, because English is really common and useful. Because of English, I can also met a lot of friends came from different countries.Educational ImpactWhen I went to primary school, I recognized that I can read all the English books given by the teacher, every word I learnt from my parents before and I became a little teacher, always helping other classmates if they have any difficulties about English. However, my Chinese is quite weak than the other classmates, because I don’t usually speak Cantonese with my parents and I totally can’t find any interest in Chinese, so in every Chinese lessons I always dreaming and talking. On the other hand, in primary school, we also need to learn Mandarin, amazingly my Mandarin is better than Chinese, I always think that English and Mandarin have the very similar alphabetic and pronunciation, so I can learn it faster and easier. Since I study in a international primary school, my classmates are all come from different country, I can hear different language every day, I didn’t try to learn them, but sometimes they will teach me a few words. For example ‘Good morning’ in French is ‘bonjour’, in German is ‘guten Morgen’, I still can remember those words until now. I really enjoy learning different language, so I asked my parents to help me find a Japanese teacher to teach me Japanese, because I really want to understand those Japanese games and cartoons.IdiolectsI think my voice is a bit soft compared with the other, I used to speak gently, however, when I hear my voice in a recording, I think my voice are

9

Page 10: 14439421 (Kwok Yiu Man Raymond) AS1

so strange and I always think the voice that it is not me, but I know every one think their voice is strange when they hear their voice in a recording or sing the karaoke, so I didn’t take that seriously. On the other hand, I like to mix some of the English and Cantonese when I am speaking, I think most of the Hong Konger are used to speak like that. I think this style of speaking can make a sentence funnier and easier to understand.

Personal Plan for Language Development

I want to be a hotel restaurant manager, so I think I need to learn at least four to five language, I need to have a very good communication skill, I will find a five star hotel to work as a waiter first, while I’m working as a waiter, I will try to learn as much as I can from the manager and all necessary skill. Furthermore, I need to speak English very fluent and my listening skill must be very good too, because we always need to hear the guest’s needs, what they need and want. For example, take orders, understand their request. In addition, in a hotel, there are many guests coming from different country every day, it is not possible to learn all language from the world, so English is the most common language using in the hotel industry. My daily job is to run the food, introduce the food to the guest, collect the plate after they finished the food, satisfied their request, make a good relationship with the guests etc.

Based on the questionnaire, I have problem with broad vocabulary base and also I have difficult reading journal articles, I also can’t write English very accurately and I’m not too enjoy writing in English too. However I have a better listening skills and speaking skills.

SpecificI would like to improve my board vocabulary base and reading skill, so I will try my best to keep reading English newspaper every day, when I don’t understand that word, I will mark it down and check the dictionary, I need to learn at least five new words every day, so that I can learn more vocab and improve my reading skills.

MeasurableAs I said before, I decided to learn five new words each day and I will mark those five words in my vocabulary book, so that I can revised it every day, and I can know that what word I had learnt. After one month I will look through my vocabulary book again to revise all the word I mark before.

11

Page 12: 14439421 (Kwok Yiu Man Raymond) AS1

Achievable My target is to learn five new words per day, I think it is really reasonable and I can do it every day, it is totally achievable. Secondly, I will revised all the word each month that I had marked down. It is very useful if I can learn those words, I think I can use them in my work.Relevant I will find those words in the food magazine or some magazine that related to the hotel industry, so that I can learn some words which are useful and not pointless. I can learn those food materials, ingredient etc.Time-Bound

In every day, I will take out thirty minutes to read to magazine or newspaper to find out five words that I don’t know and check with the

dictionary. I will continuously five months and see whether it is effective for me or not.

Business Ethics

In my opinion, companies should share their interest with various stakeholders, instead of only the shareholders. In Hong Kong where the place I live, there is not much companies that from me to analysis, so I choose to use a Company in Mainland China.

As we all know, China is a developing country and a World factory, they produce tones of product each day and export to different country, and nearly most of the things we use in Hong Kong are made in China. In China, the government did not set up so many law that to restrict companies, because the government know that this will limit their speed of developing. In addition, the problems of corruption in China are very seriously, even the companies offend any laws in China, and the companies can just use money to solve all the problems.

Let me list out few examples to support my view, the food industry in China is totally a nightmare, some companies will mix the food with the chemical that is harmful to human, to make the food look more fresh and tasty, they also will mix the oil with other liquid to produce more oil and sell it to the restaurant, to maximize their profit, however, the government still not set up any law to punish those companies. This has led to the problem getting serious day by day, and the people in China even don’t trust those companies and their choose to go other country to buy their product, for example, they will go to Hong Kong to buy daily necessities and go japan to buy electric appliances etc. because most of the electric appliances made in China are Jerry-built. As u can see in the above cases, those companies just think how to minimize their cost to produce product and maximize their profit and don’t think of the product or food safety. Finally all the matter and problems need to suffer by the citizen and themselves.

I think business ethics are really important to a company, every company should bear a range of reasonability, it’s also important to define the business ethics and standards to let the companies to follow.

A semi-formal email to Mary from Jim

Subject: Re: Intercultural staff training programme transferring here from the UKDear Mary,I have already received your email talking about the above subject and I wish to note the plan to transfer those ten members of staffs to here from the UK.

Firstly, we will make a questionnaire for 10 staffs to do and then we will help them to analysis or understand which parts are they weak or strength. Secondly we believe that self-discovery and self-learning is the most important things in the training. After the training, we will evaluate their ability and then we will help them to apply into different practice.

The key aspects of programme and topics will include cultural orientation, relation with customers, language difference, business styles etc. On the other hand, we also planned to have site and food visits.

Furthermore, we will find tutors to make several lectures about the keys aspect and let the staff discuss themselves, make them self-discovery and self- learning is our key point in this training, also we will provide video tubes for them to watch, let them have more understanding in different aspects. We also arranged 2 days for our visiting, we will visit different company and after that, we will request the staff to analysis different company.

Last but not least, I think 1 week should be enough for the whole training and don’t forget to contact me if you have any question.

Kind regards,

Jim

A reports of internationalizing a Brand

To: Senior ManagersFrom: Yiuman KwokSubject: Internationalizing the Shanghai Dumpling King in UK

IntroductionThe Shanghai Dumpling King in UK was founded in 1994. It has set up more than 20 shop just only in Hong Kong and over 100 shop in Taiwan. It is based on shanghai traditional food and Chinese food, it is kindly like a Chinese style fast food restaurant. We really hope that we can internationalizing the Shanghai Dumpling King and aim to expand in the UK

FindingsThere are many kind of food, such as fried noodles, vegetable rice, Chinese style meat, fried dumplings, rice roll, and soybean milk etc. The price is totally affordable for everyone, but the quality are good as well. We can also ensure that the interior design is same as Hong Kong. The environment are nice and comfortable. We know that there are lot of other Chinese restaurant is UK, however I think those restaurant did change the taste of the food to accommodate the English people. That is also why we want to internalizing our brand to UK, we can ensure that we can provide the original taste to the UK from Hong Kong. There is a competitor call King of Dumpling are very similar with our brand in Hong Kong.

ConclusionFrom above, we can see that the Shanghai Dumping King really have that potential in UK. I also can analysis that what are the other Chinese restaurant lack of and what are their weak point, so that we can improve ourselves more.

RecommendationThe most important things is we need to find a person who are really interested in Chinese food and cultural and he can handle all the things in a restaurant. Second, we can create franchise, this help us to develop our image and brand much faster. Then we need to hire some staff as a waiter or cooker, teacher them how to make

17

Page 18: 14439421 (Kwok Yiu Man Raymond) AS1

our food and how we run our restaurant. Finally we can make a TV or online advertisement to increase our visibility with our brand.

In the opening speech, ER explained that her company planned to build a hotel near the beach, the bay near the hotel is for water sport and there is a golf course around the hotel as well.

3. Matters deliberated uponMarina in the bay for water sports

CG asked a question that is there any place for the fisherman to beach their boat. When asked by MF, they will still allow them to have fishing industry and ER replied that the fishing is an attraction, she prefer employ some of the fisherman to take the tourists to fish and have trips. After the discussion, the house agreed the company should look for a way of buying the local fisherman instead of providing a place for them to beach their boats.

The golf course and the farmlandThe house realized that the golf course will take a very large part of the farm land in the island, ER agreed and she planned to look at the using

19

land.Water for irrigation

JG wanted to know that will the water for irrigation will affect that for farming. ER agreed to have a more detail analysis of the water need first. In addition, they also realized that the main problem is that they need to control the cost and to make the project economically sustainable.

Social and economic sustainabilityMF suggested that it is better to think more about the type of sustainability instead of one currently being proposed. He also suggest to involving the local community from the beginning. MG suggested one idea is that is that possible to run as an eco-tourism venture.

Decision takenER would try to adjust the current plan and take consideration about the farm land, the local supplies and the marina to see if they can come out with the concession. MF and MG would try to work as a team and try to design an eco-tourism venture, to see if they could come out a solution that might be economically attractive to the company.

A Formal letter to a consultancy company

Flat/G, 11/F,Caribbean Coast,

Hong Kong, China4 July 2012

The Rowlett Consultancy agency2609 Festival WalkBrisbaneAE Australia R0E 9S2

Dear Mr. Rowlett,I am writing this letter to inform you to design a plan for the eco-tourism. I am representing the community government and the tourist company. Below will be our background, problems, aims budget and the timescale.

Our BackgroundThe community is far away from town and there is nothing else, it is totally isolated. However the local government worry about the culture and traditions will lost and the infrastructure will be imperfect. Lot of young people will leave their town to work after their graduation because of the employment. Furthermore, our community away from the large town is around 20 kilometers. It is very inconvenient to our daily life, so we wish to have a new road to connect them. There is a tourist company had made a development plan, planning to build a hotel beside the beach, a marina for the water sport and a golf course around the hotel, also they wanted to improve the road.

Our ProblemAs I mention before, if we plan to build the marina in the bay, those fisherman who own a boat need to park will become a problem, it will affect their income or become a threat. If the hotel is located beside the beach, this will make the place very

21

Page 22: 14439421 (Kwok Yiu Man Raymond) AS1

inconvenient, so people will think is very difficult to come. On the other hand, our Community is not very famous, the tourists may not want to come here because it is not famous. In addition, we are also concern will the travelers buy our local product or not.

Our aimWe hope to find a solution for sustainability and try to make a market for local produce. It do not want to affect the income of the fisherman and farmers and we try to prevent destroy the environment as well.

Our BudgetThe Company prepared 5million to develop the community and the local government will also support with the same money, so the total budget will be 10 million.

Our timescaleWe wish to get the plan and get it as soon as possible, preferable in 3 weeks. We expect to earn 0.2million every month, so that we can improve the community and the tourism can be developed.

I look forward to hearing from you

Yours sincerelyYiuman Kwok

Second, we will need to change the website address to www.shdumlpingking.com.uk and it is only for UK. Third, our headline should be bigger than the original and we will put more food picture in the first page, become more attractive. On the other hand, we also need to set up a Facebook page. Nowadays all people are using Facebook, so set up a Facebook fan page is a really good idea to increase our popularity.
