The Cactus Doesn't Carry Grudges... Just SpinesThere's an old Mexican proverb that says, "Nobody looks at a cactus unless its bearing fruit." There's

a lot of truth in it.

Take the way the Teamsters and the growers look at farm workers. Until recently, we were no moreimportant to them than a thorny, old cactus in the desert. But now the cactus is bearing fruit.

They notice us now, like the fruit onthe cactus, because of our newly wonright to secret-ballot elections.

That's why the growers and theTeamsters may try to appear con­cerned about us now. But we must askourselves: "Were they ever concernedabout farm workers like us before?"We know the answer.

The growers and Teamsters are con­cerned about us now because theyknow we can bring in our own union,the United Farm Workers, and theycan't stop us.

The farm worker law makes it illegalfor the growers or anyone who worksfor them to prevent us from talking tounion representatives.

The law makes it illegal for them tofire us for actively -supporting ourunion.

The law makes it illegal for them toevict us from our home or camp forsupporting our union.

The law protects our right to vote insecret. No one will know how we voted.

So if the growers and Teamsters tellus they're more concerned about usnow, we won't be fooled. They justdon't want us to have our own union.

Remember the proverb of the cac­tus. Let's show them our thorns.FOR REAL UNION REPRESENTATION

EI Cactus Dio FrutoHay un viejo proverbio mejicano que dice: "Nadie mira un cactus al menos que este dando fruto". Estoes cierto y podemos aplicarlo ahorita. De repente, los rancheros y los Teamsters, los mismos que nosgolpearon, hirieron e insultaron hasta hace poquito, ahora estan preocupandose por nosotros, los cam­pesinos.

Pero 10 que en realidad les preocupaes que ya no pueden pararnos. EI cac­tus dio fruto: nosotros ganamos unaley cam pesina; ganamos el derecho­negado por los explotadores - deelegir nuestra propia union: la unionque nosotros queremos y no la quequieren ellos.

Ya no nos van a enganar. Sabemos desobra que no quieren que tengamosnuestra propia union. Y cuando seacuerdan que tienen que darnos elec­ciones secretas, no les alcanzan lasaspirinas para el dolor de cabeza.

Porque la nueva ley hace ilegal que losrancheros 0 cualquier lacayo de ellos,nos impidan elegir los representantesde la union que queremos.

Hace ilegal que nos echen por apoyaractivamente a nuestra union.

Hace ilegal que nos desalojen de lacasa 0 el campo donde vivimos, porapoyar a nuestra union.

La ley proteje nuestro derecho a votaren secreto. Nadie sabra por quienvotaste tu, 0 por quien vote yo, 0 porquien voto el vecino.

Finalmente, hermanas y hermanos,recordemos aquello de: "Las pulgasno matan al perro, perc hacen que se

revuelque" y tengamos en cuenta que eso es 10 que esta pasando a los rancheros y a los Teamsters.Creyeron que las cosas se arreglaban con la fuerza bruta, perc se olvidaron que nosotros tenemos elespfritu de sacrificio y lucha que a ellos les falta.
