Remembrance Day Ceremony at Karangi School 11th Nov Pedestrian Safety With an influx of students who are walking both to and from school over the past couple of weeks, we feel it is important to bring to your attention some safety facts to help keep your child safe. The following was taken from the Kids and Traffic Early Childhood Road Safety Education Program website. Children need assistance dealing with the traffic environment until at least the age of 10 as they are not equipped physically or developmentally to make the crucial decisions to keep them safe. Like learning to drive a car, children need practise and experience to walk in the traffic environment. Alongside the benefits of learning road safety, it is great chance to spend time with your family and good exercise!! Children are vulnerable road users. Anywhere where there is a potential for moving vehicles is a potentially dangerous traffic situation for children. This includes residential areas, car-parks, at traffic lights, along footpaths, zebra and other crossings, driveways, quiet streets, and busy streets. Although children may think they can handle crossing a road by themselves, remember that children:

• are easily distracted and focus on only one aspect of what is happening • are smaller and harder for drivers to see • are less predictable than other pedestrians • cannot accurately judge the speed and distance of moving vehicles • cannot accurately predict the direction sounds are coming from • are unable to cope with sudden changes in traffic conditions • do not understand abstract ideas - such as road safety

• are unable to identify safe places to cross the road • tend to act inconsistently in and around traffic •

Many children below the age of 10 years do not have the capability or judgment to handle many pedestrian situations. Children need to be accompanied and closely supervised by a parent or adult carer to keep them safer. Parents and caregivers have a key role in educating their children about road safety. Children learn about road safety largely by experience. Parents and adult carers have opportunities in day-to-day routines to discuss road safety with children on the way to the newsagent, local shop or going to school. Whenever crossing roads, it is an idea to talk about when and why it is safe to cross the road with your children so they can gain a good understanding of road safety issues. Swim Scheme Lessons for Swim Scheme will commence on Monday (17th November) and will run for the duration of the week. Just a reminder that students will require swimmers, a towel, a rash shirt as well as sunscreen. Please ensure that all items are clearly labelled. If a student should forget their swimmers on a particular day please note that they will still attend and will listen in on the lesson. Children are to wear school uniform and change into their swimmers at school. Mixed League Gala Day On Wednesday a large number of our students from Years 3-6 travelled to Geoff King Motors Oval to participate in the NRL Mixed League Gala Day with students from a number of other schools. They had a wonderful time and learnt the skills to Oz tag, which is a game suitable for both genders and which can be played by both children and adults, providing fitness and fun! A big thank you to the NRL who also very kindly donated a football for every student from our school as well as footballs for our sports shed! Scabies There have been some reported incidents of scabies within the Coffs Harbour District. As it is highly contagious, if your child does contract this it is essential that you alert the school. Symptoms Itchy skin, worse at night School or Home? Keep home from school until 24 hours after treatment has begun. How can I prevent spread? Wash linen, towels and clothing worn in the past 2 days in hot water and detergent. Tell the school. Family, friends and classroom contacts should be examined by a doctor and managed if infested. Road works Coffs Harbour City Council will be undertaking some road works outside the school over the next two weeks. Please be patient when dropping off and collecting students over this period.

P&C Meeting On Monday 17th November we will be holding our P&C meeting at 6:30pm in our school library. During this meeting Frank Stanton the Principal of Orara High School will be talking to us about the benefits of Orara High School as an educational option for your child's high schooling, as well as sharing with you their NAPLAN results. This would be a wonderful opportunity for parents in years 4& 5 in particular. We will also be sharing with you our three strategic directions for our 2015-2017 school plan.

The successful captains will be announced at our whole school presentation assembly on Tuesday 9th December. School Raffle Thank you to those families who have sent in donations for our Christmas Raffle, there’s plenty of room in the basket for more! Funds raised from this raffle will go towards school identified resources for the benefit of our students. WOW Day Due to the Mixed League Gala Day we held our WOW Day (Wear Orange Wednesday) on Thursday! A big thank you to everyone who brought in a gold coin donation and got behind this worthy cause. As a school we were able to raise $114.00 which will be donated to our local SES. WOW day is a day of recognition and appreciation where the dedicated work of State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers is celebrated across Australia. The focus of WOW Day is to encourage the community to show their support in a very simple but highly visible gesture by wearing the colour orange. This is the colour worn by SES volunteers. There are 40,000 SES volunteers across Australia who each year collectively provides around a million hours of their time to help communities in times of natural disasters and emergencies. SES volunteers have a passion for helping people in the worst of weather and at the hardest of times, helping with storm and flood operations and other rescue activities. All SES volunteers devote a considerable amount of time to skills development and training to ensure they are capable to effectively carry out the diverse range of tasks that come with being part of a dynamic and trusted volunteer emergency service. 2/3 News In 2/3 we have been busy looking at Recounts as part of our literacy unit. In this we have constructed recounts in groups, and then acted them out using the Lego Movie app on the Ipads. Students have been busy making and editing these short " movies" and have been able to incorporate technology into their literacy lessons.

We have also been busy participating in the 24 Hour reading Challenge where students are attempting to read for a total of 24 hours outside of school over an 8 week period. We look forward to seeing how they went in the coming weeks!

P&C News Monday night is THE night you don't want to miss - P&C meeting at 6:30! Come and share your ideas and hear what's happening at our gorgeous school! We're all busy, with overscheduled schedules - that's why we whip through things pretty quickly; and share the load around as much as possible. Many hands make light work and some new, fresh, enthusiastic blood *cough cough*, I mean people would be fantastic!! A funny story to share: Overheard Kruze saying to Rhykyn: "I've got a bit of eczema here, here, here and here - in my corners." (aka joints). You must be doing a great job in maths Mrs Clark - we've got corners appearing in very strange places lol..... Final Word: "I want my children to have all the things I couldn't afford. Then I want to move in with them." - Phyllis Diller. Donna A on behalf of the P&C X Understanding climate change Is your child learning about climate change at school? CSIRO’s scientists are learning how the earth's climate system works through observation, measurement and modelling.
