A YEAR IN REVIEW

Greetings Friends,

With a fond farewell, this is the final Annual Report for Auburn Youth Resources, however we are not going away, we are the newly branded Nexus Youth and Families! More about that later.

2016 Witnessed our agency’s 43rd year of providing critical services to the most vulnerable population in South King County. Due to the generosity of you, our partners, we were able to provide Behavioral Health Services and counseling to 4,154 unduplicated people. This means that young people in South King County are on the road to wellness because they have access to critical supports that build resiliency and nurture healthy life choices. Nexus clinicians utilize evidence-based practices to guide each youth, young adult or family as they face a myriad of challenges, and with the compassionate attention of the therapist, hope wins the day.

Our Substance Use Disorder (SUDs) department had an unbelievable year, completed 207 Assessments and brought 55 participants into treatment. All this on the heels of a total revamping and merging our Substance Use Disorder program with our Mental Health counseling into our new Behavioral Health Department. Along with the Prevention/Intervention Specialists (PIs) we touch more than 5,000 students in 29 of South King/North Pierce County region’s schools. We serve many schools and communities across South King County and receive referrals from school districts, hospital emergency rooms, social workers, other shelters, juvenile court systems,

families, law enforcement, and group or residential homes.

We provided 1,637 bed nights at our 18-24 emergency overnight homeless shelter. At our Arcadia House Drop-In Shelter for 12- 24 years old, we saw 1,733 check-ins and served 1,654 meals, not including the hundreds served by the Teen Feed Program. We are

seeing a significant increase in the number of youth and young adults who access these emergency services through Arcadia and responded to expand our

hours to connect young program participants to case management and housing navigators.

Nexus Youth and Families’ re-branding was necessitated by the expansion of our services throughout the cities and communities of South King County; from Renton to Burien down to the Pierce County Line as part of our service area. We are not leaving Auburn; however our services are in great demand across many communities.

All-in-all, with your partnership, Nexus Youth and Families is restoring hope, building futures and strengthening our communities through programs with youth, young adults and families.

Auburn Youth Resources (AYR) has been extremely fortunate over the past 43 years to have so many generous advocates, volunteers, and supporters. The tremendous impact that has been made for youth and young adults in South King County would not have been possible without you. Thank you.

This organization finds itself at an exciting crossroads. For the past 5 years, we have been researching the best way to unite our work across all of the communities we serve. Collaboratively, it was decided that an agency name change made the most sense to communicate our far-reaching presence across the region.

The Road Ahead

With a new name comes a refresh of our vision and mission statement.

After many years of growth, Auburn Youth Resources is renewing its commitment to local youth and families with a new name and brand—Nexus Youth and Families. Nexus means ‘connection’ in Latin, and that is the very thing we have done for the past 43 years. We meet youth and families where they are in life and provide connections to services, resources and relationships that lead to healthier futures.

Nexus Youth and Families will continue doing the work you have supported over the years! Although our name is different, the scope of our work and our values will remain the same. This organization belongs to you and together, we can continue to lift youth and ignite futures.

Overcoming Life’s Hurdles and Igniting a Future

The senior year of High School can be overwhelming for a young person. They typically juggle classes, extracurricular activities, standardized tests, worry about graduation, and the beyond. Combine these with mental health issues and an unstable home life, problems and situations are sure to arise.

Mary, 18 years old, found herself in one of these unfortunate situations. Unwelcome at home because of battles surrounding her mental health, her foster parents decided the only option left was to drop her off at Nexus Youth and Families’ homeless shelter.

Contrary to her circumstances, Mary quickly adapted to the new routine. She began to form positive relationships with staff and received encouragement she was not accustomed to. Every morning she caught a bus from the shelter to her school, over 40 minutes away. Her relationships with Nexus staff soon evolved into case management. This support helped her navigate getting her own health insurance and medication monitoring.

Things in Mary’s life were beginning to take shape. With consistent support and access to mental health services, food, shelter, and comfort when she needed it, she was on her

way to leading a self-directed life. News in the form of a letter made its way into Mary’s hands. It was an acceptance letter to Cascadia College with a full ride scholarship! Can you imagine the joy and anxiety this type of news would bring?

Mary spent over two months living in Nexus’ shelter before receiving news that would catapult her future. Without the continued support of donors and the dedication of staff members, those two months in shelter could have failed Mary. Fortunately, she’s prepared to graduate and will take her newfound confidence with her out of shelter and on to college.

Sometimes young people find themselves in our care because of life circumstances. It's our mission to work with youth to help them overcome life's hurdles...addressing their individual circumstances, and joining them to lift themselves to ignite their future.

A Safe Place to Talk and Room to Flourish

Geoffrey loves helping his grandparents out on their farm. Living with them for most of his life, he is eager for the day when he can drive the tractor on his own. He has many friends at school and here at Nexus Youth and Families too. Geoffrey has been participating in mental health counseling since he was five years old.

His parents were on the brink of divorce and Geoffrey was experiencing severe behavior issues. “I was about to take on responsibility for Geoffrey full time and we both needed some support,” said his grandmother Brenda. They both found Nexus (then Auburn Youth Resources) and were connected to a mental health counselor.

It might surprise you that someone at Geoffrey’s age would need to speak with a counselor, but Nexus supports participants from age birth to 24 and their families. “I don’t know where we would be without you guys” Brenda said. She describes the counselors and staff as family and says that it has been Geoffrey’s “safe place”. Geoffrey needed an outlet all to himself. “We don’t even ask the counselors what happened during therapy, because it’s for Geoffrey. If

something needs to be brought up to us, we are confident Geoffrey or the counselor will let us know” Brenda explained. Geoffrey is a flourishing (almost) ten-year-old. After saving over $220 of his reward for good behavior, he decided he wanted to donate his money to “a homeless person” at Nexus. His generosity didn’t go unnoticed either. The Mayor of Auburn surprised and awarded him the city’s highest service award at his school assembly.

Geoffrey appreciates the time he spends with his counselors and it’s clear that staff do too. He often visits the office outside of the time he works with his therapist just to hang out or say hello. His story is a testament to the critical work that takes place behind the doors of our Behavioral Health Department. With your support, this work continues to create brighter and healthier futures for young people like Geoffrey and their families.
