Each year Marana puts on a joint all-school musical with drama, choir, dance, band, and orchestra students. Students may also be involved in the tech crew.

Regionals is a yearly opportunity for individual singers to audition for and participate in a large honor choir with the best singers in the area. The audition consists of a prepared classical solo and a sight-singing audition.

Chamber Singers is a mixed choir of advanced sight-readers. The ensemble sings a varied repertoire with an emphasis on mastering advanced concepts in theory and sight-reading. Auditioning for Regionals is a requirement of this class.

Midnight Tigers is a treble choir of intermediate and advanced sight-readers. The ensemble sings advanced treble repertoire of all styles, collaborating and performing often in the Marana community. Auditioning for Regionals is strongly encouraged.

Men’s Chorale is a choir of beginning sight-readers, freshmen, and first-year singers. The repertoire is designed to strengthen sight-reading skills and develop vocal technique.

Women’s Chorale

Concert Choir is a mixed choir of intermediate sight-readers. The repertoire is designed to strengthen sight-reading skills and develop ensemble experience.

MHS choristers are expected to abide by all MHS behavioral guidelines. Disruptive/unprofessional behavior is not permitted. Students will adhere to the MHS dress code at all times. Failure to meet these expectations will result in negative consequences as outlined in the MHS handbook.

As group rehearsal is an essential element of progress towards the student’s performance learning goal, missed rehearsals may result in a lowered grade in that area.

Every public performance or concert is a demonstration of each student’s learning in the areas of reading, performing, listening, and evaluation. Accordingly, failure to attend a concert will have a significant impact on a student’s grades. If a student continually misses public performances, he/she may be asked not to return to the program as these absences negatively affect the entire choir.

In performance or off-campus activity situations, choristers are expected to exhibit professional behavior that favorably represents MHS and the choral program. Students will comply with MHS dress code and with the uniform requirements set by the director. Students will behave with modesty and decorum while in concert attire.

Students will be provided with ONE black 3-ringed binder. A lost or damaged binder will need to be replaced at the student’s expense. Sheet music is the property of MHS and should be handled with care. Students will be assessed a fine for replacing lost or damaged music.

Students will have all their music and a pencil at every rehearsal.

Choir Learning Goals

Each MHS Chorister has a unique blend of talent, knowledge, and experience. The purpose of the MHS Choir Program is to help every student advance in these areas.

Each MHS Chorister will show growth and improvement in:

reading music * performing music * notating music composing music * listening to music * evaluating music

Uniforms

A blue Marana West Choir T-shirt is required for all Marana Choir singers. A choir polo is required for all Midnight Tigers & Chamber Singers. Cost for the shirt/polo is $10 sizes S-XL. Orders for shirts will be taken during the first week of classes. A tucked-in t-shirt/polo and jeans will be required for all informal activities. Midnight Tigers and Chamber Singers are required to wear Jazz Black - school appropriate, formal black attire for the Masterworks concert series and formal community performances.

All MHS choir members will wear robes owned by the choral department. These robes are rented to students on a year-by-year basis. This rental includes use at 3 concerts and cleaning.

Robe rentals will be charged yearly for the amount of $20.

Financial Information

A $35 class fee will be assessed by MUSD at the beginning of each semester. This fee counts toward sheet music, accompanist fees, and miscellaneous expenses.

Students will deposit all fees into their student account through the BOOKSTORE. Students need to take their receipt to the choir office and then keep a copy for their records. Student account balances are available upon request.

Parents are encouraged to donating to the Marana Choir Department using tax credit. Arizona tax credit is a dollar for dollar tax reduction in the amount owed in taxes each spring. Refer to the MUSD website for more information.

Student Leadership

All MHS Choir leaders must be students in good standing in the choir program and as a MHS student. Each leadership focus area will be chaired by an upperclassmen with an underclassman as an apprentice. Applications will be taken the first 2 weeks of school.

Each leadership area focuses on how we can fulfill our motto (One community, One service, One voice) in our three areas of influence: the MHS Choir Program, the MHS Campus, and city life in Marana.

As a Marana High School musician who is participating voluntarily in the Choir Program, I understand that my participation in the program as an elective is a privilege and is dependent on my acceptance of and adherence to the following rules and expectations:

1. I will not use or be in possession of alcohol, tobacco or illegal substances. Failure to comply with this rule will result in my dismissal from the MHS Choir Program.

2. I will maintain satisfactory academic eligibility by passing all classes in which I am enrolled with the highest possible grades. Failure to do so may exclude me from choir activities and trips, and may affect future advancement in the program.

3. I will attend all of my classes and be on time every day. I will avoid unexcused absences from rehearsal. I understand that attendance at all rehearsals and performances are critical to meeting my learning goals in Choir.

4. I will be a good citizen and conduct myself in an exemplary manner so as not to bring discredit or embarrassment to myself, my parents, my choir, or school. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary actions.

5. I will be responsible for the music and materials issued to me, returning it in good condition, and will pay the current replacement cost for anything that I lose or damage.

6. I understand that all information regarding my participation in MHS choir is available through many sources, including the choir’s website, facebook group, posted information in the classroom, handouts, and via phone call or email to the director. It is therefore my responsibility to know and fulfill my requirements for the class.

7. I have read the Choral Handbook and understand the grading policy for this class. I will follow the rules, policies, and procedures set forth in this handbook. I am aware of the consequences for my behavior in this class.
