Welcome to the Albemarle Athletic Department

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this handbook is to give student-athletes and other interested persons a guide to the general operation of the interscholastic athletic program at Albemarle High School and Albemarle County. A student who has earned the privilege to participate in athletics is voluntarily making a choice of self-discipline and sacrifice. This concept of self-discipline and sacrifice is accepting the responsibility to understand and follow the rules, regulations, policies and procedures established by the Albemarle County School Board, the Albemarle Athletic Department and the Albemarle coaching staff. In turn, we have the responsibility to positively lead in a manner that promotes and models personal development, fosters teamwork and teaches important life skills. Successfully meeting these conditions requires responsible behavior, open communication and personal accountability from each of us; student-athletes, coaches and parents.

ATHLETIC GOALS OF ALBEMARLE HIGH SCHOOL

The philosophy of athletics in the Albemarle Athletic Department considers athletics to be an integral part of the school’s educational program. Our goal is to provide positive experiences that will enhance and challenge our student-athletes physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. We strive to develop a high level of competition without losing sight of sportsmanship, personal responsibility, academic success and leadership while appreciating all of the values the come with being a member of your team.

Albemarle Patriot Pride ...get on board

The Albemarle Athletic Department believes in “Pursuing Victory with Honor” and all that it represents. We take the responsibility of promoting and enforcing positive

sportsmanship very seriously. It is our goal to create a climate that is fun, safe and healthy for all who attend and participate.

Please be reminded that it is a privilege, not a right, to be an Albemarle student-athlete, an Albemarle coach or a parent of an Albemarle student-athlete. Each of us have a

responsibility to represent our school and our families with class and respectfulness. Your choice of language, actions and interactions with our own team, our opponents, our

guests and officials are a reflection of that commitment. This requires positive role modeling characterized by self-control,

accountability and ethical conduct.

HIGH 5’S for: 1. Positive school yells and cheers in a respectful manner.

2. Encouraging those fans around you to join in displaying sportsmanlike conduct. 3. Applaud during the introduction of players, coaches and officials and at the end of a

contest for all performances from all participants. 4. Respectfully responding to decision of officials.

5. Shaking hands with all participants and coaches at the end of the contest, regardless of the outcome.

THUMBS DOWN for: 1. Booing or heckling an official, coach, player or cheerleader.

2. Blaming the loss of a game on officials, coaches and participants. 3. Using profanity or displaying anger that draws attention away from the game.

4. Yelling in a disrespectful manner or to antagonize opponents or officials. 5. Refusing to shake hands or give recognition for good performances.

THANK YOU for being on board with OUR very important mission.

Page 5: 15-16 ST ATH HNDBKs3.amazonaws.com/vnn-aws-sites/9301/files/2015/07/... · ALBEMARLE 2015-16 Student-Athlete HANDBOOK!!!!! Home of the PATRIOTS Albemarle High School Athletic Department

Albemarle Sportsmanship and Code of Ethics

Coaches, athletes, parents and fans are expected to display respect, courtesy and strong character towards each other. Good sportsmanship is the clearest

expression of our morals and commitment to all that is fair and good in sports. Represent your school and family with class.

Each of us set the tone. Contribute to the true spirit of athletics. It is the ultimate goal of the Albemarle Athletic Department to exemplify positive sportsmanship behavior at all times. This requires a united effort from our staff, student-athletes, parents and spectators. As a member of the VHSL and the Albemarle athletic community, each of us have a responsibility to encourage and insist upon high standards. This responsibility lies with each of us. Should there be any action on the part of our student-athletes or spectators that counteracts our goal, please know that the VHSL, the AHS administration and the AHS coaching staff reserve the right to mandate appropriate consequences in order to insure a safe and positive athletic climate for all.

(1) Be COURTEOUS TO ALL participants, coaches, officials, staff and fans.

DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR: Applause during introductions, shaking hands of opponents, showing concern for an injured player, extending hospitality to visiting players, coaches, cheerleaders and fans.

(2) Know the rules, abide by and respect the officials’ decisions.

DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR: Utilizing every opportunity to promote understanding of the rules of the contest with the school and community; accept the official’s decisions without displays of temper, arguing or derogatory remarks.

(3) Win with character and lose with dignity.

DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR: Regardless of outcome, exchange of handshakes between opposing players and coaches; treating competition as a game, not a war; applaud at end of contest for performance of all players, not just your own.

(4) Exercise self-control and reflect positively upon yourself, your team and the Albemarle Patriots.

DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR: Supporting the activity by displaying TOTAL UNITY as fans; as opposed to boasting and using antics which draw attention to yourself instead of the contest.

(5) Permit only positive sportsmanlike behavior to reflect on AHS and our programs.

DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR: Positively encourage those around you to display only sportsmanlike conduct; discourage use of profanity, taunting or other destructive mannerisms.

TO OUR AHS FANS: We appreciate your support and POSITIVE encouragement! We ask that your behavior be FOR and NOT AGAINST our coaching staff, visiting teams, officials and, of course, our own student-athletes. Should you have a concern, be respectful enough to discuss that concern with the coach at the appropriate time and location.

TO OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES: As an Albemarle student-athlete, you are expected to conduct yourself with integrity, sportsmanship, honesty, pride and humility. Your conduct is closely scrutinized as you sit in the classroom, as you travel and as you compete at home and on the road. You are looked upon as a role model, particularly by your peers and younger children. It is important that your personal conduct be above reproach at all times. Realize that you are representing yourself, your team, your family and Albemarle High School . . . do so with class and self-control.

An Albemarle Coach reserves the right to implement their own specific team rules, regulations and

consequences that may be more, but not less severe than those listed above.

PARENT/ATHLETE/COACH

COMMUNICATION

Coaching, parenting and being young are all difficult roles. By establishing an understanding of each role, we are better able to accept the actions of each other and together, provide a greater benefit to our children. When your child becomes a part of the Albemarle Athletic Department, you have the right to understand what expectations will

be placed on your child and what expectations we place on our coaches. This begins with clear communication from the coach your program and a commitment from you to take your concerns directly to your coach when you

are looking to solve problems and address concerns.

COMMUNICATIONS YOU should EXPECT FROM YOUR CHILD’S COACH: • Coach’s Philosophy

• Expectations and goals the coach has for your child as well as for the team/season • Team requirements, special equipment needs, strength and conditioning programs

• Procedure to be followed if your child is injured during participation • Game/practice schedule and updates

• Team rules, guidelines and consequences for infractions • Lettering criteria (if applicable)

• Team selection process • Coach’s telephone number and e-mail address

• AHS Training Rule and Pledge Card • Steps to take should they have a concern

COMMUNICATIONS COACHES should EXPECT FROM ATHLETES/PARENTS: • Any concerns should be expressed DIRECTLY to the coach.

• Advance notification of any schedule conflicts • Advance notification of illness and injury - when possible

It is the goal of everyone that each Albemarle student-athlete will experience some of the most rewarding moments and memories of their lives.

It is also important to understand that there may be times when things do not go the way everyone would wish. When this occurs, discussion with the coach is imperative. While we encourage the initial dialogue to be between

the coach and the athlete, we recognize that sometimes that is uncomfortable. Direct contact with the coach is the first and most integral step to understanding and finding resolution.

APPROPRIATE AREAS/CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES: • Treatment of your child

• Ways to help your child improve • Concerns about your child’s behavior, safety and welfare

• Future strategy or plan on how you can better work/communicate with them

INAPPROPRIATE AREAS TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES: • Other student-athletes • Team strategy

• Play calling •Playing time

If you have a concern to discuss with a coach, please follow these steps:

1. Set up an appointment with the coach.

2. If the coach cannot be reached, contact the Athletic Director,

and ask her to set up the meeting for you.

3. *Please, do NOT confront a coach before 4. or after a contest or practice.

These can be emotional times for both the athlete, parent and coach.

If meeting with the coach does not provide a satisfactory resolution? 1. Set up an appointment with the AD to discuss the situation

2. At this meeting the appropriate next step can be determined

Albemarle Patriot Rules & Regulations for Student Athletes/Managers

Participation in interscholastic athletics is a privilege, NOT A RIGHT, earned by the student who meets eligibility requirements set by the VHSL, The Commonwealth District, the Albemarle school board, and Albemarle High School. Questions pertaining to the following additional requirements should be directed to the Athletic Director/Principal: 1. Academics: All participants shall exhibit good citizenship as well as meet the VHSL academic requirement of “Take 5, Pass 5”; must take 5 credits and pass 5 credits. The Athletic Office will check each student’s grades from the previous semester to confirm VHSL academic compliance. In calculating 5 credits, one 4x4 class counts as 2 credits, one hybrid class counts as 1 credit. 2. Physicals: Medical examination: All athletes shall have on file in the Athletic Office a completed VHSL Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physician’s Certificate Form. No student may participate in conditioning, practices or games unless he/she has a physical on file which is dated after May 1st of the current school year. 3. Insurance: All participants, including managers and student trainers, must be protected by school insurance or have personal insurance that will cover any athletic injury. The participant’s parent(s) must sign the Insurance Confirmation Form designating that the participant has proper accident insurance coverage and that Albemarle County is not responsible for any x-rays, doctor, or hospital bills due to an injury to the participant while he/she is participating on a team involving Albemarle High School. 4. Attendance Requirement: All participants must be in school for at least 2 full blocks before being permitted to participate in an interscholastic contest, practice, or conditioning program that day or evening. Exceptions are few but will be considered by the Athletic Director and must be approved by the principal. All student-athletes must be on time to their first block class regardless of how late they return home from an athletic trip the previous night. 5. Physical Education Class: All athletes must follow the same rules and regulations as physical education students. Their experience and skills may be utilized for demonstration and assisting the Instructor. Limited activity should be considered by the Instructor if students are going to participate in an athletic event that day or evening. 6. Out-of-school Suspension: Any participant given out-of-school suspension will be ineligible during the assigned suspension period. In addition, they may be disciplined further by the Principal, Athletic Director or Coach that could include temporary or permanent suspension from the team. 7. After-school Detention: Any participant assigned after-school detention will be required to attend the detention. If a detention conflicts with a practice or a game, the student may not participate for that day, unless approved by the assigning administrator. 8. In-school Suspension: Any participant assigned to a full day of in-school suspension will be ineligible until the first day they attend “regular” classes. For each day that a student-athlete is in ISS, they are NOT eligible for practice or competition. 9. Eighth Grade Participation: Eighth graders may participate in athletics on the sub varsity level if: • a 9th or 10th grader has not been cut

• approved by their middle and high school principals • completed VHSL Physical Form/Training Rules on file • meets all school, Commonwealth District and VHSL requirements

10. School Debts: Students owing a debt to the school will be ineligible to participate in athletics until the debt is paid. 11. Equipment distribution and return: Once equipment and uniforms are issued, it becomes the total responsibility of the student. If any of these items are lost, stolen or damaged, the athlete is held financially responsible for replacing it. All payments for lost equipment must be made at the end of the season to the Albemarle HS Bookkeeper. 12. Dismissal/Quitting Policy: If a student is removed from, or quits a team without mutual release from the coach, he/she is ineligible to try out for a team for the next 2 consecutive seasons. In the event that the student is not mutually released, the coach must report these cases within 48 hours to the Athletic Director. This must be in writing, stating the student has been removed or quit. Should the student wish to appeal, they must notify the Athletic Director in writing within 10 days of notification. Three neutral coaches will be set up b y the Athletic Director for the students to appeal the decision and they will decide the consequences.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY SCHOOLS SPORTS

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM & “RETURN TO PLAY” PLAN

UPDATED BY ACPS HEALTH ADVISORY BOARD – February 2013

We are committed to safe practice, and we have this plan to ensure that (i) coaches, athletic directors, Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC), administrators, volunteers, student-athletes, and their parents are aware of the short-and long-term effects of concussions; (ii) student-athletes sustaining concussions are removed from play immediately and referred appropriately; (iii) student-athletes who have sustained concussions are returned to play only after receiving appropriate medical care, adequate time to heal, and demonstrating no symptoms consistent with a concussion.

The ACPS Sports Concussion Management Plan includes 5 fundamental components:

1. Verified training of coaches on concussion risks, recognition, and management.

2. Education of parents and student-athletes on concussion risks, signs, and symptoms, and post-injury management for sports and school officials. Parents and student-athletes will read, sign and submit the Albemarle County Public Schools’ Concussion Information Sheet to the school before the first practice.

3. Immediate removal from play by the student-athlete’s coach, ATC, or team physician of any student-athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion in a practice or games (i.e. exhibiting signs and/or symptoms). “When in doubt, sit them out” is the operating principle.

4. Written clearance to return to play for the student-athlete by a licensed health care professional trained in the evaluation and management of a concussion. The written clearance must be received by the ATC before the student-athlete is allowed to return to the field/court. Prior to participation in a full-contact practice the student-athlete will be given a post-injury ImPACT test that will be interpreted by a physician knowledgeable in concussion management. The ImPACT test results will be used in conjunction with the entire history and assessment to help determine “return to play” status. “Return to Play Requires Medical OK” is the operating principle.

5. Treatment of the Student-Athlete in School. School personnel will be trained on concussion management in the school. They will be informed of the student-athlete’s injury and its specific symptom manifestations – physical, cognitive, emotional, sleep. The school nurse will be notified to assist the student-athlete’s recovery by informing the student-athlete’s teachers, who may provide an altered work-load to aid the student’s recovery.

Albemarle County Schools offers a high quality athletic program to supplement our students’ experience at the high school level. In order maintain this program with increased financial constraints; we have assessed an athletic fee beginning in the fall of 2010.

Starting last school year, Albemarle County Public Schools required that each student pay a non-refundable athletic fee of $75 for each sport in which he or she is a confirmed member. Fees collected will contribute to the Albemarle County Public Schools budget to assist with coaching salaries, security, field maintenance, transportation costs, and VHSL membership fees.

The maximum athletic fee per family is $450. Athletes that tryout and become an official team member will be required to pay the $75 athletic fee prior to the first official contest in order to be eligible to compete.
