Dear Parents/Guardians, Google Classroom was piloted in AY20162017 as it was gaining popularity as aupcoming learning management system suitable for the millennial. This year, we have implemented it as a school‐wide programme. As such I would like to share how we use Google Classroom at NHJS. Primary 1‐5: Our primary one to primary fivestudentsdo not have a school Gmail account. Hence, the parent’s NH email address is used to access the platform. Here, the parents/guardians are enrolled as “students” and they will have access to all the posts, resources that has been uploaded on the Google Classroom stream.
Fig 1.
The purpose of this platform at these levels is to upload resources for reviewing and for reference only. Resources such as worksheets and their answer scheme are uploaded so that if a student wants to review the material, they may get it online. Teachers are informed to state the instruction to parents/guardians such as “for reference” or for “self‐review” to understand the purpose of the post. Parents/Guardian are not expected to print any class materials for the students unless they want their child/ward to practice it on their own. However, some worksheets such as ICAS past papers, are uploaded so that students may attempt the questions on their own, if they are involved in the competition.
Teachers have been informed that any changes to test schedule or any such announcements, the students have to record it in their organisers followed by the teacher updating it in the school’s Google calendar. Please check the organisers as that will have the most updated announcements. Therefore, parents are not required to check the Google classroom for announcements. Primary 6‐ Junior College 2: The primary six to junior college twostudents have their personal NHgmail accounts. Hence, your child/ward is enrolled as a student and he/she will have access to all announcements, posts, resources that has been uploaded on Google Classroom stream as seen in Figure 2.
Fig. 2.
Parents/Guardians on the other hand will be invited to sign up
for a daily or weekly email summary about what's going on in
the classes. The emails include a student's upcoming or missing
work, as well as announcements and questions posted by
teachers in the class stream as seen in figure 3 taken from

For these levels, the students will receive most‐up‐to date reminders on assignments and posts. There are many Classroom app that work on Android, iOS, and Chrome mobile devices making it easily accessible. Google Classroom is a powerful instructional tool. Teachers may assign differentiated worksheets to appropriate students, have collaborative group work, and prepareonline quizzes that maybe recorded as a continual assessment component. Google classroom has the capacity for classes to go paperless. However, we have not implemented that as our examinations (iPSLE, IGCSE and A‐levels) are all paper and pen based. In addition, teachers may share links, upload references for flipped classroom where students read up materials prior to class so that an engaging discussion can ensue. Also it allows for blended learning so that students may be involved in some self‐directed learning when teachers are away. These are some of the features that we have adopted and are exploring many best practices for the benefit of our student’s learning. Needless to say, that in every new endeavour, there will be some teething problems and we welcome your inputs and look forward to your support in your child’s/ward’s educational journey at NHJS. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] for any queries or feedback. Rubina Pasha Dean for Academics

If we pay after the deadline, can we appeal? All fees and Capital Levy has to be paid timely before the deadline. No appeal will be entertained. The school will not reserve a place for any child if fees are not paid before the new school year starts. Would all incumbent students receive an invoice for payment of next year fees or Capital Levy? For Tuition Fee of AY 2018/2019, parent would receive an invoice before 30/11/2017. If there is a change of your address please inform us. Special circumstance of parents or children who are deemed unsuitable to continue with the school will receive a separate advisory for them to look for a school better suited to their needs.
Reiteration of School Plans Dear Parents/Guardians, The school hosted our Board of Governors last month and had shared with them the school master plan. This master plan had already been communicated to all parents and stakeholders via the Weekly Bulletin as well as email from the principal’s office. A copy is also available on the school website. In gist, the school has attained substantial stability in leadership and staffing and is on its journey towards realising the vision of creating a better world through education. We will be persisting to steer away from conventional classroom learning and focus on authentic and meaningful learning experiences. For us as parents, we want our children to grow into good sons and daughters who are grounded in values and will thrive beyond the school environment. We yearn for every child to grow holistically and be well‐balanced in experiences as a child and learner. Thus, we carefully crafted programmes and activities for all our students. A. School Masterplan Let me share briefly our masterplan “Anchoring, Growing, Enriching”. At a snapshot, we are determined to continue anchoring our charges in values inculcation, growing them as whole persons and enriching their life experiences. We believe an all‐rounded PIAGETian will place our children in the best position to deal with the real world and situations they have yet to encounter. We strongly believe that working on enablers such as the quality of staff, and student‐focused processes/programme will allow us to provide the best educational experience and growth of every child in our school. This masterplan will be executable with the continued strong support of parents/guardians and various stakeholders. Leadership and Culture The Board, together with the school will work on building the Leadership Pipeline for both senior leadership in school as well as the Deanery. The imminent task is to identify successors and mentor them for the job. We are embarking on the phase of nurturing teacher leadership via the mentorship route and active search for suitable leaders within and outside of the system. The school seeks to build a Nurturing School Culture, Engendering Growth at all levels. The culture to be further developed will continue to focus on a strong mentoring system with every teacher playing a part to grow every child under their charge. This collective effort will allow us to identify the potential of every child and to grow them within a nurturing school culture. A structured approach of structuring curriculum time for teachers to meet and develop strategies to engage students will be put in place progressively across all levels and departments. We believe the collective wisdom of the staff will grow a learning environment that best serves our students and prepare them for any challenges in the future. The culture of greatest care for the students will also focus on values inculcation and generating more opportunities for inter level mixing to reduce misunderstanding amongst the students. This meant an expansion of the role and responsibilities of the GROW

team in the school. The team, led by Dean for Secondary, will take on the functionaries of the Student Well‐Being Committee (previously the Discipline Committee), engaging in pro‐active approaches for a positive, and nurturing school culture. Quality of staff as key As the school under preparation for the next lap, it is quintessential that staff recruitment, retention, and recognition be re‐evaluated. Despite a rigorous recruitment process, staff still need time to adapt and grow in NH. Professional development plans for all staff will be evaluated and each staff will be allocated ample development opportunities as well as leadership opportunities. This growing of teach/mentor leaders will be implemented immediately and refined further pending feedback and evaluated in accordance with the Staff Development Framework. PIAGET Academy is in negotiation with Singapore University for Social Studies to be the strategic partner and to offer upgrading modules and courses for PIAGET Academy staff. We have also initiated staff attachment to Singapore Schools and had sent Junior College teacher mentors to Meridian Junior College for attachment. Partnership with Hwa Chong Institution, Nanyang Primary School, Hutchins School, and Rosyth Primary School will continue. New addition includes North Vista Secondary School, Palm View Primary School, and Poi Ching School. Quality of teaching and learning The core business of our teachers and mentors is in teaching and learning. Moving forward, the focus will be more on the learning and the learning outcomes of the children. The latest batch of graduates had articulated to reputable universities and two of them had earned full scholarships (details published in last week’s bulletin). The curriculum at the Secondary and Junior College levels had undergone review in 2016 and topics had been re‐positioned at the upstream levels to build the capacity of the students to deal with them when articulated through the levels. The culture for learning, thinking and innovation is infused into the curriculum and the Year 9 Habits of Mind Programme was designed to further augment this. More will be done for Character Development and Values Inculcation via the curriculum. Mentors will seize teachable moments to teach an authentic values lesson and students taking on leadership positions such as Prefects and Student Councilors will be empowered to role model and enforce the values. The focus for 2017 and the next three years is focused on level up the standard of English Language learning and use in NH. The senior leadership has been tasked to maintain high oversight of Secondary and Junior College levels. The school strives to enhance the acquisition and use of the language. Portfolio will be monitored to track the growth of every child in the school. Quality of programmes The hallmark of PIAGET schools is the strong alignment to the PIAGET 12 Years Education Journey and Learning Outcomes. To this end, NH has reviewed and developed programmes to enable our students to enjoy the benefits of the PIAGETian education. The various milestone programmes are reviewed and re‐developed to realize the respective learning outcomes which are age and cohort specific. For example, a 19‐days Habit of Mind Camp was developed to cater to the developmental needs of the year 9 students and it is currently running at INAGRO, Bogor. This camp is developed by our teachers are close study of the students and their needs. The programme also has a strong strand of Research and Project Based Learning. Progressively, each level will have its own milestone programme enabling and growing each child, enriching their experiences and skills. The deliberate set up of the Prefectorial Board, extending membership from Year 3 to 7 (Primary 3 to Secondary1) provides the juniors in NH leadership opportunities and to prepare them to serve in the Student Council in the future. A hallmark of our Student Council is its mandate to continue and serve the community and the needy through its nation building projects. One sustained project run by Student Council and sponsored by the school is the Free School Project, where needy children from the community are brought into our school during the weekend to be taught English Language, Mathematics, and Physical Education. The school strongly supports student‐initiated projects and believe the school is a safe environment for all to try and even experience failure, from which the richest learning abounds.

Building on our success with the last batch of in their articulation to universities of their choice, we have further expanded the GROW team and their functionalities. The GROW team will begin education counseling once the child is in Secondary 1 and ramp up the sessions at Secondary 2 to better guide them to align their subject combination to the university and courses of their choice. It will be a venture involving parents and regular contact with the GROW team. The team will guide the university preparation from Secondary 3 onwards with collation and building of the individual portfolios and personal statement. We believe we have made good inroads in building confidence of our students in applying for top universities and scholarships (details of articulation to university has been published in the bulletin). Growing administrative excellence The key focus of the administrative and Support Services is to further enhance School Safety and Security. The security will continue to maintain vigilance and ensure safety for all. The team is on a regular weekly learning community, developing ideas to improve the school and systems. The future initiatives include further exploitation of Google as platform for teaching and learning and the expansive use of the school official emails. The school will also roll out a Phone Apps in due course. Prototype of this was presented to the Board and refinement will be made to enhance the security and protect the users. These are developed by our dedicated staff who sees it as their personal mission to improve and make the school a better place. The Chairman of the Board of Governors will be convening sessions with parents and students to hear your views about the new school. The first round of feedback from the students, staff and parents which were collated via email has been presented to the Board in the previous School Visit. Mr William Yiu will make time to meet parents in groups and further details will be made available once we have Mr William’s schedule. Conclusion NH is at its inflexion point and change is inevitable. We believe we are a school of choice and will continue to improve to get better. We like parents and stakeholders to partner us as we anchor, grow and enrich every child under our charge. The school regularly reviews the fees to ensure we have the necessary resources to support the growth of the children. The new schedule of fees will be released on 4 September 2017. B. School Fees and Capital Levy The school would like to inform that there will be fees adjustment for the new academic year, 2018/2019. We would like to urge parents/guardians to take advantage of the special once‐off 20 percent early bird discount for payments made before 31 January 2018. Please note this special discount is only applicable for school year 2018/2019 and will be discontinued thereafter. This is to allow us to have a clear indication of parents/guardians who intend to continue having their children/wards study in NationalHigh. We want to also highlight that from academic year 2018/19 onwards, the school will not offer any instalment plans. We reiterated that the instalment plan was initiated due to the transition from payment in USD to Rupiah, back in academic year 2016/2017. We would like to emphasise that all fees must be paid in full by the respective deadlines. For non‐payment of fees or capital levy, we want to reiterate that the school will not issue the progress report or the starter kit and the students will be sent home. We urge parents with arrears to settle the arrears so that the children need not be subjected to this. The school will take a firm stand on fees matter and minimise any arrears as it will impact overall operations. The school will not be meeting on fees related issues. We value all our parents who had been giving their continued strong support to ensure we work together to deliver the best education for all the students and to continue and create opportunities for students to learn and excel. God bless. Mr Ang Hwee Khoon Principal
