Die Laerskool Lydenburg was weer die afgelope naweek slagoffers van vandalisme. Die skoolhoof, mnr. Lemmer, het die SAPS vroeg Maandaoggend deur die skool begelei om te wys presies waar al die skade aangerig is. Dit is nie die eerste keer dat boosdoeners sulke vadalisme toepas nie. Die SAPS het ges dit sal nie geduld word nie en dat die booswigte hulle

gaan vasloop in die polisie en verhoogde sekuriteit. Die vandalisme het duisende rande se skade tot gevolg gebring.

DAWIE Hamman of 35A Schoeman Street, Lydenburg brought this Giant African snail into the Highlands Panorama News office on Monday. He had found the snail in his garden. Giant African land snail may refer to two genera and three species within the family

killed by accident. They immediately phoned Mr Neels Bothma, a snake enthusiast and a local authority on the subject. Mr Bothma brought the snake to the Highlands Panorama News and shared the story. With the help of the public, incidents like this can be stopped and no snake needs to be harmed. Rare and interesting finds on newspapers doorstep

Achatinidae, a family of unusually large African terrestrial snails. The adult snails have a height of around 7 cm, and their length can reach 20 cm or more.The shell has a conical shape, being about twice as high as it is broad. Shell colouration is highly variable, and dependent on diet. Typically, brown is the predominant colour and the shell is banded. Its habitat includes most regions of the humid tropics, including many Pacific islands, southern and eastern Asia, and the Caribbean. It is a highly invasive species, and colonies

can be formed from a single gravid individual. The species has established itself in temperate climates also, and in many places release into the wild is illegal. The giant snail can now be found in agricultural areas, coastland, natural forest, planted forests, riparian zones, scrub / shrublands, urban areas, and wetlands.The snail is a herbivore; it eats a wide range of plant material, fruit and vegetables. It will sometimes eat sand, very small stones, bones from carcasses and even concrete as calcium sources for its shell. In rare instances the snails will consume each other.Adult size is reached in about six months; after which growth slows but does not ever cease. Life expectancy is commonly five or six years in captivity, but the snails may live for up to ten years. They are active at night and spend the day buried underground.They are capable of aestivating (a state of dormancy, characterized by inactivity and a lowered metabolic rate, that is entered in response to high temperatures and arid conditions) for up to three years in times of extreme drought, sealing itself into its shell by secretion of a calcerous compound that dries on contact with the air. This is impermeable and the snail will not lose any water during this period.

Gerda Chester en Susan hou hul duime omhoog met die wete dat LAPSAR

nou weer in die regte hande is.

Vals berigte in ander koerante en die toestand van die hokke het vir Gerda Chester genoodsaak om weer LAPSAR terug te neem. n Spesialis het daarop aangedring dat sy vir n paar maande rus, sy was nie naby dood nie. Die vrou het net die sleutels in my hande gesit en ges sy sien nie meer kans nie. Die Highlands Panorama Nuus het baie klagtes ontvang oor die hokke en die toestand van die diere terwyl Gerda nie daar was nie. Daar was met tye geen kos en water nie, en die ontlasting het emmers vol gestaan in die hokke. LAPSAR was haar breinkind en sy en haar man het alles in hul vermo gedoen om dit op te bou tot die hokke wat dit vandag is. Gelukkig kan sy nou weer met eerlikheid en opregtheid vra dat Lydenburg haar weer ondersteun soos wat hulle al die jare gedoen het. Gerda 082 041 6165.

he Lydenburg SAPS can now say that they have identified two of the bodies found in February on the T

outskirts of town. Constable Ramodikwe from the Lydenburg SAPS confirmed that one of the deceased, a woman, allegedly committed suicide. She worked at a hair dresser in Lydenburg. With respect to her friends and family her name is withheld. In another turn of events the police arrested a 19 year old man from eMalahleni for the murder of the person that was found close to the Spekboom Bridge. The police first suspected the body was a woman because i t was so badly decomposed. The victim was a taxi driver from eMalahleni who offered to drive the alleged murderer to Phalaborwa in his car . The suspect and the taxi driver had an

argument and the taxi driver was killed with a knife. The suspect threw the body in to the cars boot and drove with it from eMalahleni to Lydenburg and dumped it close to the Spekboom Bridge. He was on his way to Phalaborwa.The taxi drivers family reported him as missing and that his vehicle had a tracking device. The vehicle was found in Phalaborwa in the

hands of the suspect. The suspect was firstly arrested for having stolen property. The eMalahleni Detective Branch started looking for evidence and arrested the 19-year-old man for murder. The (third) man that drowned has not been identified yet.

KundigheidONS het hierdie afgelope naweek weer die jaarlikse byeenkoms van oud TPA natuurbewaarders op Loskopdam gevier.Ek het so deur die gekuier en die fenomenale skaap en vark wat swaer Andre Hart vir ons gebraai het, geluister na die ouens. Hier was wetstoepassers, administrateurs, direkteure, permit en CITES spesialiste, reservaatbestuurders, ekolo, natuurwetenskaplikes (verskeie met PhD grade), wildvangers, viskundiges, veeartse en elke kundige wat jy aan kan dink, in een groep om een vuur bymekaar.In my loopbaan het ek net een talent gehad. As toesighouer was ek baie suksesvol om die regte persoon met die regte werk op te paar of te match. Waar ek die besluit kon neem,

het ek n nuwe kandidaat ondervra, na sy geskiedenis gekyk en kon ek hom in n afdeling van natuurbewaring plaas waar hy suksesvol sou wees. En die resultate het in 80% van die plasings gewys.As ek so na die dertig oudlede wat hier bymekaar gekom het, kyk, dan het ons in die TPA en later in die nuwe provinsies manne en vroue van uitstaande gehalte en kundigheid gehad. Mense (party al jare uit die diens) wat vandag nog met groot outoriteit oor onderwerpe soos renos te rs t ropery, krokodilmonitering, waterbesoedeling, wildvang en elke ding kan praat.Gee vir my n skoon vel papier, n begroting en steun van die regering en ek plaas hierdie ouens in s t r a t e g i e s e p o s i s i e s o m e l k e natuurbewaringsonderwerp onder die son aan te spreek en te bestuur. Eerlike hardwerkende mense.Die probleem vandag is dat almal ly onder hopelose bestuur, regeringsinmenging, korrupsie, baantjies vir boeties, aanhoudende vervolging, afgekapte hande (hulle mag nie besluite neem nie, want alles het n politieke implikasie) en hulle is erg nou

onderbefonds. Dit alles lei tot stres en maak hierdie spesialiste erg gedemotiveerd. Hierdie poel van kundiges is nou gemiddeld 58 jaar oud en baie is al dood. Die tyd om hulle kundigheid ten beste van die land aan te wend, loop vinnig uit. Van die wat reeds oorlede is of ernstig siek is, is werklik onvervangbaar.Ek is seker hierdie situasie manifesteer hom in die onderwys, gesondheid, staatsadministrasie en elke ding. Dit help ook nie om hulle te probeer lok as konsultante of met groot salarisse nie. Hierdie is groot mense. Hulle wil voldoende begrotings h vir noodsaaklike toerusting. Hulle duld geen politieke inmenging nie, wil besluite neem sonder reperkussies en wil nie onbevoegde suurstofdiewe babysit nie. Hulle soek dissipline en bevoegde werkverrigting. Hulle wil di wat nie werk nie kan fire en wil bekwame mense kan aanstel ongeag sogenaamde arbeidsteikens. Dit is die voorwaardes en basta! As ons regering nie daarvan hou nie, kan hulle in hulle peetjie gaan en sit en vrek saam met die res van die land!

Die vols wat gevind was, is erg gedehidreerd en verhonger.Kan ons nie weer n poging aanwend om boere te versoek om skoon karkasse, sonder medikasie, te skenk nie?Die aasvolrestaurant by Kudu Ranch is nog aktief, maar karkasse word nie meer daarheen gebring vir voedsel nie.

Ek sal dit graag in Engels wil doen sodat die munisipale amptenaar(e) wat vir die gemors verantwoordelik is dit sal verstaan!It is with great disgust, sadness and disappointment that I read your article regarding the graveyard situation. As you may or may not know I worked for the municipality for 17 years and during this time the task of booking a grave was with Loenie Visser in the Technical Department until 2002. When the functions and powers were moved to the Community and Services Department, the task became mine as I was the secretary. During this time I decided that I would take on the mammoth task of putting all the information i.e. registers with deaths dating as far back as the year 1810 onto computer. This task took 8 months of hard and dedicated work. After I had completed putting the information on computer, Buks Neethling (an employee of Thaba Chweu) and I went to each and every grave to check that the initials, surname, date of birth as well as the date of death corresponded with the information. This information was then sorted in alphabetical order to make enquiries that we received from families who had ancestors buried in Lydenburg easier to trace. This

that there is an Act that specifies that each death must be recorded in a prescribed manner i.e. In a register. Is it so difficult to write the information in the register? I think not, on occasion when I have visited the offices the specific lady always had someone in her office sitting on a chair and they would be talking and laughing, I am sure this was not about work. This is pure laziness and it has also come to my attention that the person who is currently responsible for this work writes the deaths in a diary, and not even in the register. Question: What happens to that diary when the year is completed? Let me tell you, it probably lands in the dustbin and basta with procedures and Acts. This kind of behaviour is disgusting, a disgrace, dishonest, unsympathetic and disrespectful to the bereaved families and I feel that this person must be disciplined and suspended and if found guilty of this misconduct be dismissed immediately. How can you not know in which grave someone's dear one has been buried? These families go through a lot of trauma if someone passes. I really do sympathize with Mrs Karin van der Walt and others that this may have happened to. No one else can be held responsible for this misconduct except for the Director of Community Services, Mrs Lindie Dube. I'd love to hear her excuses why the registers and graveyards are in such a mess. Why doesn't she investigate these complaints when they come in? If the new grave yard is in such a state of disarray, I'd hate to know what a mess Mashishing and Kellysville grave yards are in! I end by saying Well, you've really done it this time, now Focus, a well known Sunday night scheduled program has come and investigated. The once proud Thaba Chweu, winner of many awards, is now going to be the laughing stock of the country because incompetent people cannot do their work. There are so many other issues that one can talk about but let's not go into those right now!

Grave yard mess makes me sick

Ewe skielik is dit aanvaarbaar vir al wat maatskappy, klerewinkel asook Jan en alleman om jou na jou selfoonnommer, sonder jou toestemming, te skakel of te sms. Ja, soms gee jy toestemming vir n winkel. Maar op n manier kry ander skermunkels die nommer in die hande en begin jou pes. Met opgewondenheid bekyk jy jou selfoon as n oproep of sms deurkom. Lekker, nou kan ek met iemand gesels. Dalk is dit iemand van wie ek lanklaas gehoor het. Helaas. Dis iemand wat jou wil pes, veral daardie duisende 'bel-my-asseblief' sms'e wat jou inboks volmaak. As die nommer onbekend is, bel ek definitief nie terug nie. Wat nog van instansies wat telefoon-bemarking gebruik na 19:00 elke aand. Dikwels net na n huisgesin rustig aansit vir ete. Die Amerikaners is weereens ons daar een voor. Telefooneienaars kan hul nommer lys as een wat glad nie vir bemarking gebel mag word nie. Maatskappye word dan beboet sodra die eienaar n oproep ontvang. Nou die Saterdagaand, seker so 19:45, kom n oproep deur. Stel ek belang in lewensversekering? Nee, glad nie, s ek. Dadelik voel ek skuldig oor die krasheid. Wraggies, minute later is daar weer n lewensversekering-oproep. Ek het toe geduldig gewag dat die man klaar verduidelik, jy weet net om ordentlik te wees. Ek dink regtig Amerika se sisteem kan hier gemplimenteer word. Die Reg tot Privaatheid bly n reg. Net jammer dat n selfoonnommer regtig nie privaat is nie. Dis verkeerd, heeltemal verkeerd. Om van die ding ontslae te raak is ook nie n opsie nie. Telefone is gemaak om te lui en mens van iets in kennis te stel. Dit is immers die hoof middel tot kommunikasie. Net jammer niemand stel maatskappye nie in kennis dat jy eintlik niks van hulle wil weet nie.

En dan bel-bel en lui-lui. Ag laat ek maar antwoord en klaar kry.

Die Vryheidsmanifes s Suid-Afrika behoort aan almal wat hier woon swart en wit. Die debat is tot nou gevoer met as uitgangspunt dat elke sandkorrel in Suid-Afrika aan swart mense behoort. Wit mense en boere het dus geen aansprake nie. Ons word net met grootmoedigheid verduur.Dit is vir my as Afrikaner in Afrika, wat geen ander tu i s t e he t n i e , n onaanvaarbare uitgangspunt.

CMR versoek dringend donasie van n vrieskas is n onafhanklike welsynsorganisasie en is afhanklik van skenkings en donasies. Voedsel word weekliks aan ons geskenk ten opsigte van die kospakkies vir hierdie behoeftiges. Ons het egter n probleem met die vries en berging van bederfbare produkte en benodig ons dringend n addisionele vrieskas. Hierdie vrieskas sal ons in staat stel om meer kos vir n langer tydperk vars te kan hou, sodat ons dan ook meer gesinne kan help met kospakkies. Di Koekemoer laat jou deurgaans glimlag wanneer hy dinge kwytraak wat jou onwillikeurig herinner aan iemand in die regte lewe. Wally is die president van n plaaslike rugbyklub en behartig die jaarlikse prysuitdeling. Wally het ook n paar geraamtes in die kas en probeer op sy eie lomp manier sy aksies regverdig. In die proses val hy letterlik oor sy voete. Hierdie skreeusnaakse stuk laat jou verseker met n glimlag op jou gesig die saal verlaat.

En in die proses mis hulle die geleentheid om n uitstekende (en mooi) voertuig teen n redelike prys aan te skaf.As jy dit nog nie gedoen het nie, gaan kyk en ry Accent, Elantra en Sonata. Vir my geld (en ek ry bykans elke week n nuwe voertuig) sal ek daardie drie voertuie heel bo aan my inkopielys plaas.Wanneer mense hierdie feit gaan agterkom en die Hyundais begin uit toonkamers loop, gaan pryse begin opgaan en het jy reeds n gulde geleentheid verloor om n puik motor teen n bekostigbare prys aan te koop.Andre Coetzee

Ons toets die Mazda MX 5BAIE groot lekkerte! Daar was en is heelwat kompetisie in die Roadster klas van voertuie. Chrysler Crossfire Convertible, Nissan 370Z, Mercedes SLK, Honda S2000, Daihatsu Copen, Fiat X, Opel Tigra en baie ander. Dit het alles in die vroe sestigs begin met Austin Healy, Truimph Spitfire, Mini Marcos en MG.Moet nie n Roadster met n Europese kabriolet of Amerikaanse Convertible verwar nie. Daar is min ware Roadsters. n Roadster is klein. Dit is blitsig. Dit sit op die pad soos n neet. Dit is agterwielaangedrewe, tweesitplek en het net twee deure en dit is plat!In hierdie klas staan die Mazda MX5 sedert sy bekendstelling heel bo wat bykans alles betref. Ja die Nissan 370Z is n kragtige monster en elke ding, maar hy is te groot vir n ware Roadster.Ewenwel, McGee & Kie het ons het di week die geleentheid gebied om die MX5 onder hande te neem. En wat n plesier was dit nie.Die Mazda se bougehalte is uitstekend. Dit is uiters stewig en voel asof dit uit een blok graniet gekap is. Dit is so rats soos n kakkerlak op n warm stoofplaat! Daar is geen bakleun om draaie nie. Die enjin grom en die ligte motor versnel soos n koel uit n geweer. Die enjin rooilyn bokant 7 000 opm en die ratkierie is kort en presies. Tewens, dit hol so lekker dat jy nie jou linkerhand van die rathefboom kan afhaal onder volle versnelling nie. Teen Laske Nakke se bult op bly dit versnel en ons is twee in die motor teen 160 bo uit in vyfde en dit het steeds spoed opgetel. Die 2.0 enjin maak 118kW teen 7 000 opm. Dit klink nie na baie nie, maar die karretjie weeg feitlik niks. Teen 150 toer die enjin teen 4 000 opm in sesde.Beste van alles, met die dak oop kan jy teen daardie spoed steeds met mekaar praat. Met die dak op, is die MX5 so stil en gerieflik soos enige ander motor. Binne is daar dubbelsone klimaatbeheer, elektriese vensters, elektriese soliede dak wat in net 12 sekondes opslaan en nog vinniger afslaan (jy doen dit met n knoppie en jou voet op die rem as die motor stilstaan). Daar is vierwielskywe met ABS, EBD, EBA en elke ding. Daar is rolstawe agter jou kop en n rits veiligheidskenmerke soos lugsakke en impaksones.Die stuur is lig, baie direk en die motor is baie stabiel en koersvas in n reguit lyn. Jy sit laag en outoppies klim moeilik uit. Maar jy sit met n grin van lekkerte! Die BOSE klankstelsel met 6CD voorlaaier en sewe luidsprekers is uitmuntend en daar is n iPod konneksie. Verhitte leersitplekke, sattelietkontroles op die pragtige stuurwiel, ritrekenaar.Die MX5 is in agt opwindende kleure beskikbaar. Waarborg en diensplan is goed.Hierdie is voorwaar n opwindende, gehaltemotor. Om hom te ry is soos om motorfiets te ry of met n mikroligte vliegtuig te vlieg - opwindend! Geen wonder Topgear se Jeremy Clarkson beskou ook die MX5 as die beste motor van sy soort nie. Kritiek? Net die feit dat ek nie een het nie.Andre Coetzee

JUST how infected are South African drivers licence testing stations with bribery and corruption? As it turns out, very. I have a friend named Paul (not his real name), who after literally years of struggling to get his Class C1 (old Code 10) drivers licence the legitimate way, decided to enter the system through the side door and pay every bribe necessary to get the job done. Here is his story. Paul is a licensed driver and has been for around 20 years, but wanted to upgrade to a Code 10 licence in order to legally drive vehicles that weigh over 3500kg. Many South Africans start with this classification, as it is well known for being an easier test to pass, much more open to bribery, and also authorises driving of Class B (old Code 8) normal passenger cars.

Corrupt drivers license testing

Paul says that at the many driving school practice yards he visited, it was plain to see the amount of young women learning to drive in hundreds of hired flatbed trucks there. He didnt dispute the legitimacy of young women whose jobs may require heavy vehicle operation, but it was his impression that the majority were there to shortcut the system. The first step in upgrading from a normal Class B (old Code 8) to a Code 10 licence, is to book a date for a written learners licence test. This is where Paul had his first brush with corruption. The officials who make these bookings will go out of their way to make it difficult to do so, because they work in cahoots with the driving schools who can easily be found loitering outside any testing station. Paul was actually told that if he wanted to make a booking himself, he would need to come at 4.30am on a Thursday and queue, but there was no guarantee he would get a date because there is a certain quota per day, and once filled, the windows are closed and people are turned away. But, if he paid one of the guys lurking outside R600 he could secure a date at any time, and for a date much sooner than otherwise possible. So Paul paid. It gets worse from here. For another R1 500, Paul was guaranteed a passing mark. On the day of his test, the 30 or so learners were crowded around outside the exam room waiting to be called in. The doors opened, and the officials called a few names one by one and were told where to sit. These few names were the people who had paid the bribe. On Pauls day there were around five. At these five seats, were pre-placed test booklets. The booklets looked like they were printed decades ago, and were well worn with food stains, smudges and tears. This makes them easily manipulated and, if pre-arranged, are marked with tiny pencil marks next to the correct answers. Paul says a test conductor quietly pointed out the pencil marks to him during the test, and he passed with a 100 percent score. With learner licence in hand it was now possible to book an actual Code 10 driving test, but here he was met with the same corrupt scam as before. Booking on his own was impossible, but for R600 he could get a date via a driving school, and again for much sooner than otherwise possible. The crooked contact told him that legitimate bookings (where possible) were set for almost five months later. After paying the requested fee, Pauls date was set for a week later. He was also offered a guarantee pass in the practical driving test for another R2000, but declined because he was confident he could pass easily as he had been driving for so many years. The test is almost identical to that for normal passenger cars, except for a few more vehicle checks and a much easier alley-docking park test. However, this is where Paul fears the system is most corrupt, because he believes he was guaranteed to fail for not paying the bribe. Having not taken up the R2000 offer, he failed the driving test within two minutes. The test administrator, who walked alongside Pauls hired truck (another R700 fee) in the yard, while constantly typing messages into his Blackberry, cited him for not observing each of eight mirrors and blind spots necessary at each stop. Paul believes he had, and wondered how the test administrator could have seen what he was doing with his head buried in his phone. Either way he had failed the test. Another R600 for another test date, and R2000 for a guaranteed pass, and he was

back in the same yard two weeks later. Paul wasnt sure where the cash actually exchanged hands, because he gave the money (called cheese between bribers and bribees) to his driving school connection, who may have handed the money over to the tester after hours. These testers are only allowed to conduct seven tests per day, which could mean up to R14 000 cash, daily. This time the tester, again focussed fully on his phone, waved Paul through each obstacle in the yard without penalty. He proceeded out onto the road, tester on board (without his seatbelt buckled), where now his attention was turned from his phone to female pedestrians who received loud and obnoxious cat calls from the passenger window of the truck he had again hired for R700. There was little to no interest in how he operated the truck. Paul passed the test and now has his Code 10 drivers licence. But at a cost of around R6100. Paul believes he is more than qualified to have passed all the tests with flying colours, without bribes, but says the system is so vrot with corruption it was his only choice. --Star Motoring Pssst!
