Citizenship is the right o ever! individ"al# $! proclaiming a citizenship% an
individ"al is agreeing to abide to that co"ntr!&s constit"tion and government# 'owever%
beore an individ"al can adopt a citizenship% he or she m"st "lill a speciic legislation# In
Indonesia% this is (rticle 27% 2)% and *+ o the 1,+5 Constit"tion# -hese re."irements and are
essential to ens"re that citizens will abide to a co"ntr!&s law% participate in national acts% and
respect the comm"nit! as well as contrib"te to it# Citizenship is a part o an individ"al&s
identit! / even i he or she is an immigrant / and has advantages and disadvantages#
(s an immigrant% o -"an in led China at the age o seven% in the earl! 1,+0s% and
entered Indonesia with his ather% mother% and siblings 34ioe Ing# (s vigilantes% the! too6

original citizenship# D"ring Indonesia&s independence% his amil! was oered citizenship% b"t
the! t"rned it down and decided to 6eep their Chinese citizenship% beca"se the! tho"ght the!
wo"ld ret"rn to China# 'owever% ater thirt! !ears and creating his own amil!% o -"an in
inall! adopted and Indonesian citizenship when he decided that he wo"ld not ret"rn to
China# -he process was not simple% and the! were re."ired to remember Indonesian histor!

states that all citizens have the right to wor6% have stable living% reedom to associate%
reedom o e<pression% as well as rights to lie% amil!% basic needs% ed"cation% 6nowledge%

Citizenship can be a disadvantage "nder mandator! laws# (n e<ample is militar!
re."irement% or obligations to sel;deense# In Indonesia% or e<ample% citizens are re."ired to

ewaian>?# @ome co"ntries also have higher ta< rates than others% ma6ing citizenship in

against that speciic race# 8hen adopting a citizenship% individ"als ma! also loose the health
