Are you looking for a satisfying but flexible volun-teer opportunity? Peninsula Food Runners is a vol-unteer organization dedicated to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste. We are building our volunteer base in Santa Clara County and invite you to join us. Shifts normally take less than 90 minutes and can work around your schedule. Come join our team of volunteers! Go to peninsulafoodrunners.org and register under Volunteer Sign-Up. Questions: email Molly Rhine at [email protected] or call (408) 396-8705.

As we close the Year of Mercy and begin our prepa-ration for the birth of Jesus, we are reminded in the Gospel to live our lives in a state of anticipation that the Lord might call us home at any time. On a per-sonal level, in the Letter to the Romans, Paul tells us to resist the desires of the flesh. In the first reading from Isaiah we are admonished on a personal and national level to work toward peaceful co-existence - "nor shall they train for war again." In the 21st Cen-tury , whether in the streets of our cities or the battle-fields of the Middle East, such calling does not seem to be the reality in which we live. Though our elec-tion is over (this piece had to be submitted before the election), the struggle for control/power persists. As Christians we must maintain our vigilance and in-volvement at the local/national level to be assured of the presence of the Gospel in the decisions which are made impacting us all. Jesus depends on us to "beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks." (Whether in our communities or the halls of Congress.) From Vatican II's "Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World" (26): "Every day hu-man interdependence grows more tightly drawn and spreads by degrees over the whole world. As a result the common good, that is, the sum of those condi-tions of social life which allow social groups and their individual members relatively thorough and ready access to their own fulfillment, today takes on an increasingly universal complexion and conse-quently involve rights and duties with respect to the whole human race. Every social group must take ac-count of the needs and legitimate aspirations of other groups, and even of the general welfare of the entire human family." Might we reflect on what was once written by G.K. Chesterton: "Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried."
