Keynote Speaker

Lessons on Leadership, Teamwork and Perseverance

Commander Mark Nutsch Green Beret Commander Portrayed in the Movie 12 Strong & New York Times Best-Seller, Horse Soldiers

As portrayed by actor Chris Hemsworth in the major motion picture, 12 Strong, Mark Nutsch (aka Mitch Nelson in the film)

shares lessons learned in the now-declassified saga of a U.S. Special Forces team that overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to help achieve a historic military victory.

Mark Nutsch shares the true-life story of helping lead what is considered the most successful unconventional warfare campaign in modern history, a victory that changed the course of our country and the world.

In October 2001 following the attacks on 9/11, Nutsch led a heroic 12-man team of U.S. Special Forces on a covert mission to Afghanistan, where they would ride to war on horses to fight the enemy—side by side with their Muslim counterparts—capture the strategic city of Mazar-i-Sharif within a matter of weeks, and successfully overthrow the Taliban. Now a consultant to Special Operations Command, he earned a Bronze Star with valor for his bravery. Nutsch, as "Captain Mitch Nelson," is portrayed by actor

Chris Hemsworth in the 2018 major motion picture 12 Strong, based on the best-selling book Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton.

On stage, Nutsch enthralls audiences with an edge-of-your-seat, behind-the-scenes account of how this almost unbelievable event played out, impacted the world, and earned them the gratitude of a nation. He also shares perspectives on preparing his team of “guerrilla diplomats” for ever-evolving on-the-ground circumstances, and how resourcefulness, inventiveness, and commitment, along with adaptability, a diverse team, and a capacity to persevere enabled them to successfully accomplish their mission.

In Memorium: F. Matthew Jackson

Matthew Jackson was a former president and longtime board member

of the TMA Upstate New York Chapter and co-chair of the Northeast

Conference. He died March 23 at 49. Mr. Jackson was a partner with

O’Connell and Aronowitz LLP in Albany. He leaves behind his beloved

wife of 23 years, Molly, and three children.

Current TMA Upstate New York Chapter President John Bellardini, CTP,

said Jackson had been “positive and upbeat” in an email to board

members following recent cancer surgery. “Then we got the news that he had passed,” he said.

“Matt was passionate about his family, his work, his community, and his life,” O’Connell and Aronowitz

wrote in a posting on the firm’s website. “We mourn his untimely death but celebrate the way he lived

his life.” Bellardini said Jackson especially looked forward to the Northeast Conference each year. “He

was gracious with his time. Anytime I called him and asked for some help, he was there,” Bellardini said.

“Like most people in TMA, he was just a person of quality.”

Matt was a graduate of the University of Rochester and the Syracuse University College of Law. He

enjoyed playing lacrosse and was inducted into the University of Rochester Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. He coached youth lacrosse and served for six years on the board of the Colonie Youth Center, including

a two-year term as board president. He also served as director, treasurer and vice president of the

Capital Region Bankruptcy Bar Association, and director and president of the Creditors Association of

Upstate New York. He was an avid golfer and member of the Shaker Ridge Country Club, a devoted fan

of Syracuse University football and basketball, and the Dave Matthews band.

Donation forms will be available at the conference registration table for anyone interested in making a

memorial contribution to the American Cancer Society or the Colonie Youth Center.
