From the Desk of Father Ed:

Dear Parishioners,

As we continue in the Church’s season of Ordinary Time and read from Luke’s Gospel, the Lord places before us the parable of the Good Samaritan. This parable is present only in Luke’s Gospel. It is prefaced by a scholar of the Law testing Jesus. He asked our Lord, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus in turn asked the scholar, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” The scholar replied with the two commandments, love of God and love of neighbor. He proceeded to ask Jesus who is included as neighbor. Perhaps, like many of the Jewish people of his time love of neighbor did not include your enemies. Jesus goes on to teach the scholar that he is correct in his answer about what is required of us to enter the kingdom of heaven, that is, we must love God first in our lives but also we must love our neighbor as ourselves. However, loving neighbor encompasses everyone even our enemies.

On the surface the parable of the Good Samaritan clearly gives us an example of what is required of us when someone is need. That is, we are to stop and make an effort and care for them to the best of our ability. We do this because it is the charitable thing to do and the Lord demands this of us. If we look at the parable from the time of Jesus we can discover another level to its meaning. In the parable the man who was left half dead by the robbers was passed first by the priest and then a Levite. When they saw the man half dead not only did they not help him but they crossed to the other side of the street to avoid him. The reason they did this was because if they touched a dead person (other than a family member) they would have been rendered ritually unclean. In order to follow the Law and avoid becoming unclean they would have had to keep their distance from him.

In the New Covenant that Jesus ushered-in he did away with the Temple animal sacrifices and the Jewish ritual purity laws. From the time of Moses the Jewish people were an exclusive people. The statutes and ordinances of their faith required them to distance themselves from the pagan cultures of their time. Jesus did away with the exclusiveness of the Old Covenant. In the New Covenant he requires a holiness that is all inclusive. Who is our neighbor…everyone is our neighbor and we are to care for and love everyone.

The parable must have been striking to the scholar of the Law. The one who helped the man left for dead was the only one who could have come near and cared for him, the Samaritan. Since the man who was robbed was coming from Jerusalem he was most likely a Jew and the one who helped, a Samaritan, would have also been his enemy. (Samaritans and Jews were known to hate each other since the Samaritans were intermarried with the local pagan religions and broke off from worshiping in the Temple.)

Our Gospel today begins with the question that we too should be asking, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus reminds us that we must love God first in our lives and above everything else. Secondly, we must love our neighbor as ourselves. The parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us that our neighbor is all inclusive, that is, we are to love everyone, even our enemies. To love everyone even our enemies is possible because God gives us the grace we need through the gift of his Church and her Sacraments. Let us stay close to the teachings of his Church and her Sacraments so that we can love and one day inherit the kingdom of God.

Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us,

Father Ed,

Parish Life: Next Sunday, July 17th we will be starting our new youth group consisting of high school teenagers. The group will meet at the pavilion at 6:00 pm and conclude at 8:00 pm. There will be plenty of time for fun, games, socializing, sports, talks, prayer, and food. Please invite your teenagers to come and join us for “Catholic Teens”…Tell them to invite their friends. At the World Youth Day in 2002, Pope St. John Paul II addressed the youth by saying, “The future is in your hearts and in your hands. God is entrusting to you the task, at once difficult and uplifting, of working with him in the building of the civilization of love.” (Pope St. John Paul II WYD 2002. Downsview Address, 4)

First Friday at The Homestead

"We are seeking volunteers who are willing and able to help Father Ed with the First Friday 2 p.m. Mass at the Homestead Nursing Home. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Homestead at 1:15 p.m. on every First Friday of each month to help bring the residents down to the first floor All-Purpose Room, where Father Ed celebrates the Mass at 2 p.m. We then return the residents back to their rooms. The entire undertaking is usually completed by 3 p.m. We are partnering with volunteers from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish to enable the Catholic residents of the Homestead to attend Mass. This monthly Mass is the only opportunity that a majority of the residents have to actually be present for Mass, so this is an important ministry. The Homestead Nursing Home is located at 129 Morris Turnpike, Newton, NJ. If you would like to assist us kindly contact Dan Salvatore at 973-579-1908 or via e-mail at [email protected]"

Kiosk Media Center (at the rear of the

Church)

One of the books in our Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk is “The Second Greatest Story Ever Told” by Fr. Michael Gaitley. From the author of the

bestselling book 33 Days to Morning Glory comes a gripping account of the prophetic witness of Pope Saint John Paul II, and the profound connection between Marian Consecration and Divine Mercy. The Second Greatest Story Ever Told is more than a historical re-telling of the Great Mercy Pope. This book serves as an inspiration for all who desire to bear witness to the mercy of God, focused on Christ and formed by Mary. It calls us to respond to the urgent need for mercy in our time of unprecedented evil. Now is the time of mercy. Now is the time to make St. John Paul II's story your own. Each book is only $4. Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, is a member of the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. As director of the more than 1-million-member Association of Marian Helpers, he launched a pastoral initiative called Hearts Afire: Parish-

based Programs for the New Evangelization. He frequently appears on EWTN and preaches retreats throughout the country on topics such as Divine Mercy, Consoling Spirituality, and Marian Consecration.

The lector proclaims the Word of God during the Liturgy of the Word, an ancient tradition of the Church. No experience is necessary, but training is required. All lectors must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation to serve. If you are interested in serving our Parish in this role please call Jenn at the office (973)948-3185.
