Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

From the Principal

All too quickly the end of the school has arrived! Term 4 has been extremely busy as we have prepared for the next group of Year 7 students in 2017 as well as completing Semester School Reports, and curriculum plans for 2017.

Are You Bushfire Ready – We are! In 2017 the school is back on the Bushfire Zone Register and therefore must have a plan should the school be threatened by bushfire. If this did occur the school may be required to close for the day that a catastrophic Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is declared for the Shire of Katanning including the town. If a closure is to take place letters will be sent home with students as well as an alert on the MSN system and school website.

If such a situation occurred then parents should monitor local media for current information, check the DFES website www.dfes.wa.gov.au or call 13 DFES (13 33 37). Alternatively contact the school on 9821 9800 or the Wheatbelt Education Regional Office on 9622 0200. If you have any questions regarding the Bushfire Plan please contact the school via email [email protected] or phone 9821 9800.

Students looking to lead In Term 4 we have run the election of Student Leaders for 2017 process. A tremendous response from students has enabled a diverse group of students taking on the roles in next year. All nominees had to write a speech which they presented to their peers prior to the elections. I congratulate all the students who had the courage to nominate and get up in front of their peers. Of the current young leaders Ratu Taylor (Year 11), Gabby Millan (Year 9), Jasmine Butterworth (Year 8) along with Head Girl Makaela Knapp all nominate for a second term and were re-elected. Joining them in 2017 are new young leaders include Head Boy Jayden Severin, Shaun Hodgson (Year 11), Cyaniqah Rangawhenua (Year 10), Aaliyah Hall (Year 10), Hsar Maung (Year 9), Annie-Rose Julius (Year 8). The representatives for Year 7 will be elected in Week 4 of Tem 1 once these students have got to know each other. The Year 12 representatives will also be elected in the new year. The 2017 Team will have a good mix of experienced and inexperienced young leaders which will enhance their leadership across the school.

Many thanks to the Student Leadership Team for 2016. They worked well together as a team, were very successful in fundraising for community organisations, represented our school at the Dawn Anzac service, International Women‘s Day event and White Ribbon Australia March, welcomed dignitaries to the opening of the Trade Skills Centre, organised Spirit Day with Mr Dark, visited local Primary Schools as part of the Year 7 Transition Program played a crucial role in our Resiliency Day and organised all whole School Assemblies. Every one of our young leaders is congratulated as they developed new skills, increased confidence and demonstrated a capacity for team work throughout the year.

Indigenous Hip Hop Project In partnership with Palmerston the school sourced funding to enable the Indigenous Hip Hop Project Team (IHHP) to work with our students. This was an amazing and very successful collaborative partnership that involved students in Clontarf and Deadly Sista Girlz inviting other students to work with them to create a video with a strong community message.

Farewell This year we say farewell and thank you to the following teachers: Luther McPhee, Jasper Garde, Tracie O‘Regan, Genevieve Hulin, Michelle Dolan, Heidi Tyler, Alexis van Leeuwen, Israt Malek, Amelia Wilson and Tom McClurg. We congratulate Janine Daniel on her promotion to Head of Science at Atwell College and thank her for years at Katanning Senior High School teaching science.

Thank You I would like to take this opportunity to thank the School Board for their support and guidance throughout 2016. Mr Ian Hanna as Board Chair has ensured that we have continued to grow in our understandings and knowledge as an Independent Public School Board. Under Ian‘s leadership we have refined Board processes, expectations and understandings relating to school planning and operations. I thank our Board Members for their commitment to our school. The P&C President Cheryl Chamber continues to support the school in fundraising and planning for the 2017 School Ball which is well underway with a very committed Ball Committee. I thank Cheryl for her ongoing commitment to the P&C. In partnership with the school our parents and community members are key contributors to our success as a community high school.

It has been a busy year for our school as we continue to improve the quality of the teaching and learning of our students. I thank all our staff for their contribution to Katanning Senior High School which is a very unique and diverse school within regional Western Australia.

At the end of Week 7 the Bush Rangers went on their last camp of the year to Lane Poole Reserve in Dwellingup. On Friday afternoon we went rock climbing and abseiling on an 18m tower which the cadets found challenging, exhilarating, terrifying or a mixture of all of these emotions. Ryan was the fastest student to climb the difficult side of the rock wall in 1min 50s (Mr McPhee scaled the wall in half that time) and Jackson was the first to abseil upside down! After claiming our camping spot we cooled off in the river for a couple of hours; swimming and having more thrills with a rope swing. On Saturday we hired two and eight person rafts and went paddling at Baden Powell Pool; venturing a fair way up the river and building our teamwork skills. We also had a great time swimming, playing a version of water polo and getting a massage from water falls. In the evenings we cooked our dinner over trangias or in camp ovens, toasted marshmallows, went for a night hike, chatted around the campfire and spotted satellites and shooting stars. The trip home provided an emotional moment for many as it was the last camp for some students, but we didn‘t let it dampen the memories of a great camp. Miss Sarah Watson, Bush Rangers Unit Leader

Katanning Senior High School has a Behaviour Management Policy and within it the maintenance of Good Standing is an essential component of the policy. All students commence the year with Good Standing and this status is maintained by students complying with the school‘s rules and standards; correctly wearing the school uniform, maintaining appropriate behaviour in class and not receiving a suspension.

Students who maintain Good Standing are eligible to receive rewards and attend all school activities including participation in Country Week, the Senior School Ball and other extra-curricular activities and excursions. From Week 5, we have turned the library into our very own Gold Class Cinema to hold Good Standing events for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. Included in the reward, students receive popcorn and a drink and are

able to watch a movie with their peers who have also maintained Good Standing for the term.

The staff at Katanning Senior High School would like to extend their congratulations to the students who have maintained Good Standing for the term and encourage all students to strive and uphold the values of Katanning Senior High School in 2017. Ms Hulin and Ms D’Souza Learning Environment Team

GOOD STANDING REWARDS

ENGLISH

This Term the 8.1 English class read the novel Helicopter Man by Elizabeth Fensham (2005). Much fun has been had reading about how Pete and his Dad were being pursued by a secret organisation. Both their lives were in danger and when the helicopters hover nearby they must hide. Pete knows he has had an unusual life but he has never dared to ask questions before. His Dad‘s behaviour had started to confuse him, but when Pete started to piece the scraps of information together, he discovered something bigger. Why did his Dad really behave so strangely? This term some of the murals in the walk way between the upper and lower school quad, as well as those outside room 23, have been renewed or replaced. The Deadly Sista Girlz have painted a section outside their room and the others have been painted by the Bush Ranger Cadets. The two artworks of a rhino and a pyramid of cubes have just been refreshed with new paint while the other designs are new. These new designs feature: promotion of Breakfast Club, a banner with our RAPT values (Respect, Achievement, Perseverance and Tolerance), a mind-space head, and an Australian Bush scene. Students have enjoyed expressing their creativity and brightening up that area. Miss Sarah Watson

This year the P & C Ball Committee are very excited to present the 2017 Senior School Ball ―A Night Under the Stars‖. Year 10‘s 11‘s and 12‘s of 2017 are invited to attend this magnificent night on the 25 of March 2017. For the first time, the year 10‘s are invited to attend the evening. This has been decided in the hope to increase numbers for a more lively atmosphere on the night, to decrease ticket prices, and most importantly, to begin the year on a positive note for all senior school students and to build cohesiveness across the upper school.

A reminder to all students and parents/guardians that to be eligible to attend, the following requirements are to be met. All year 10‘s (2017) will return a signed permission form agreeing to the cocktail dress code for the year 10‘s so as to keep the year 11/12 formal dress tradition. This means that students can be absent for no more than 2.5 days during this time without a medical certificate. Students must be in Good Standing as of the end of school on Friday 24 March 2017. Students from KSHS in year 10 and up may partner a Year 10, 11 or 12 student, however they must meet the same attendance and Good Standing requirements. Partners who do not attend KSHS will need to complete and submit an Outside Partner Permission by February 28, and must also be of year 10 age or older. Approval to attend will be at the discretion of the school administration. More information about this will be received early in term 1. WORKPLACE LEARNING EMPLOYER BREAKFAST

On Thursday 1 December an Employer Breakfast was held at the New Lodge Motel Katanning for employers who participated in the Workplace Learning Program during 2016.

Businesses were well represented, with twenty five in attendance. The purpose of the event was to formally thank the wonderful business people that support the programs at Katanning Senior High School, and without whom programs such as Workplace Learning would not exist. Employers were issued a Certificate of Appreciation along with a Thank You letter, and had the chance to mingle with other participants and Katanning Senior High School staff over a full breakfast. This provided a brilliant networking and ideas sharing opportunity that is not often available during a routine visit or day to day operation.

There is a great deal of community spirit in Katanning, and we are fortunate enough to have had over fifty different employers active throughout 2016, with a total of 57 students completing the program. Our students completed over 6700 hours in the workplace, and employment prospects for students completing the program have been fantastic.

Again a big thank you to the wonderful team of employers that have had students over the years, and if there are any businesses in Katanning and surrounds that would like more information on the Workplace Learning program please contact Mrs Alicia Turner.

Mrs Alicia Turner Structured Workplace Learning Officer

The 2016 G.S.S.S.S.A Interschool Athletics Carnival was held in Albany on Tuesday of Week 9. Katanning Senior High School entered a team of 16 students who were selected as a result of winning events at the 2016 Interhouse Carnival.

The small team excelled throughout the day, winning a multitude of events against B division schools from Denmark, Mount Barker and Albany (Bethel Cristian School, Australian Cristian College and St Joseph‘s College). Unfortunately a lack of relay teams relegated Katanning Senior High School to 3rd place at the end of the day‘s proceedings.

There were two outstanding individual performances on the day, Codie Mills-Durack and James Cronin being crowned the Year 7 and Year 8 Champion Boy. It is important to note that each of these boys broke multiple records on the way to their victory.:

Codie Mills- Durack Year 7 Long Jump 4.78m Year 7 High Jump 1.43m Year 7 400m 1.03.44s James Cronin Year 8 Shot Put 12.10m Year 8 Discus 31.85m

A huge thank you to all team members for their participation, support and respect of fellow athletes, you have represented Katanning Senior High School with passion and pride.

INDIGENOUS HIP HOP PROJECT

If you have Facebook you might have seen a video clip called “Standing Strong” featuring some very talented Katanning Senior High School students being shared. The video is the culmination of a very busy week in which the students put in a huge amount of effort to complete a project. The students wrote and performed the lyrics which are based around the issues that they feel are most pressing for the youth in Katanning- being alcohol, drugs and racism but also touched on domestic violence and education. You‘ll notice that what‘s special is that both Indigenous and non-indigenous students worked on the project and this makes the message even more powerful!

The mind blowing part is that although we say it the project was for the entire week, it basically came together in a little over 3 and a half days! Students wrote the lyrics in just under 2 hours on Monday afternoon, recorded the song in approximately 5 hours Tuesday, spent Wednesday and Thursday filming and on Friday, we were very pleased to premiere the video to more than 100 students, family and community members.

The video clip has been viewed more than 2,600 times in just 3 days and shared close to 100 times on Facebook. The shares have come from current and former students of KSHS, business owners in Katanning, supporting corporations of the school and our programs and family members of participants. What‘s super cool is that it was seen on the other side of the country within minutes of it being released and even in other countries within hours.

You can view the video by following this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-pTQFLeSBA or you can search IHHP Katanning on YouTube. Keep your eye out in the video for not only our talented students but some of our talented staff; English Teacher Mr Garde makes a dancing cameo and Melissa Riley Deadly Sista Girlz Manager sings and dances.

We thank the staff from Palmerston who worked very hard with the school to secure the funding which enabled us to complete the project. Also thank you to local Elders Gabrielle Hansen and Harold Miller who were involved in the cultural consultation. We especially thank the extremely talented boys from IHHP who made the project come to life. They worked tirelessly to create the finish product and made the whole experience memorable for all involved! Lastly thank you to all the staff at Katanning Senior High School who supported the project by allowing students to participate during class time. The students had a fantastic time and I‘m sure will never forget being a part of such a special project! Mrs Caitlyn Fitzgerald

This Term the year 10 Specialised Physical Education classes have been learning about Water Polo and have recently started practicing and playing it.

During the theory lessons we learned about; the rules of the game, the positions and techniques used during the game. Now that we are in the pool and learning the practical side of the game

the students are realising how strenuous Water Polo really is. We are improving our ability to tread water, pass to a person‘s hand and in front of them, swim with and without the ball, positioning and scoring.

It is really great to see the Specialised Physical Education classes outside of school, participating to the best of their ability and representing Katanning Senior High School.

In Term 3, the Year 9 Specialised Physical Education students were very fortunate, being able to attend weekly excursions to the Country Club as part of their racket sports unit. The students put their knowledge from theory lessons completed at school into practice, whilst playing some competitive and highly skilled games of squash. It was wonderful to see both classes participate fully and represent the school admirably. A huge thankyou to the Squash and Country Clubs for allowing us to use the facilities, the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and relished the opportunity to play sport outside of school.

In Term 4, the same two classes have been attending lessons at the Pool Hall as part of the table games unit. After learning and playing table tennis at school and developing their hand-eye coordination, the students have been visiting the Pool Hall during Weeks 8, 9 and 10. It has been pleasing to see the students grasp the opportunity to play a sport which is surprisingly difficult to master.

A massive thank you to David Chilcott and the Pool Association for sharing the facilities with the High School, we hope that you will get some budding junior players onto the scene in the future! Miss Amelia Wilson Teacher—Health and Physical Education

Some 84 students from our seven feeder primary schools attended our Orientation Day on Wednesday 30 November this year. The students were placed into their Houses and attended classes in English, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, Science and Humanities during the day. All students also took part in a Scavenger Hunt, searching for aspects of the school. This they did with gusto.

As part of the Transition, Year 6 students had already attended Katanning SHS for three full days, experiencing a range of classes and teachers. And a number of students had previously attended the Enrichment Days held in Term 3 and in early Term 4.

The students attending knew their way around the school, many knew their teachers and the day went very smoothly for all of the students.

ORIENTATION DAY

The last couple of week‘s students have been engaging in extra life skill learning activities such as shopping, money handling and cooking. These skills will equip students for everyday life and assist them to be more confident and independent. Students have been busily preparing for a morning tea for staff and parents to thank them for all their wonderful support throughout the year. The Inclusive Learning garden is flourishing! Colt, Zac and Mrs Terri Whiteaker have done a great job tending to the garden daily. However with the recent hot weather it has needed extra watering. The students went to the KD‘s Garden Centre and purchased new a hose. The students were delighted with the sight of the first crop of tomatoes! We can‘t wait to pick them and make pizzas! Dynamo Reward Camp During week 7 the students from Northam Senior High School joined the Katanning students to enjoy three days of reward activities for meeting goals for the year. To be able to attend the camp students needed to earn their position by attending school and tutoring and meeting the program requirements. Students participated in various activities over time of the camp including attending SciTech, ice skating, shopping, beach activities, rock climbing, flying fox and of course the main attraction going to see Dynamo the illusionist at Perth arena. The students had a great time and enjoyed their time in Perth. They were wonderfully behaved and represented their schools exceptionally well. Thank you to Mr Calkin and Mrs Waters who gave up their time to attend the camp. End of Year Awards In Week 8 we wrapped up our year of Follow the Dream with our annual awards night. ANNUAL AWARDS NIGHT

On the night of Wednesday the 16 of November, the Katanning Academy held their Annual Awards night. The event was held at the Sprig Bar which is located at the Katanning Leisure Centre. The night was attended by around 65 people and it was greatly supported by the school staff and local community. The evening started with food and drink for half an hour and then onto the awards. Boyd Woods, a past student of Katanning Clontarf was the MC for the night, and he did an amazing job. The boys gave fantastic speeches after they received their awards. The night progressed with a video from the highlights over the year. The crowd enjoyed this part, as there was plenty of laughter to go along with some of the pictures. The formalities of the night drew to a close when we presented the two Year 12 Leavers with their gift for completing an amazing 5 years of schooling. The evening concluded with some more food and drinks with some family photos.

Sun Safety Enjoying the sun and outdoor play is a favourite pastime for Australian families. All family

members should follow the 5 S‘s to stay safe in the sun; Slip on clothing that covers arms and legs Slop on 50+ or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen Slap on a broad brimmed bucket or legionnaire hat Seek shade Slide on wraparound sunglasses Children with an intellectual disability are at particular risk on hot days. Things to consider; Offer drinks every 20 minutes. Children who cannot move or change position by themselves may become sunburnt quickly. Some medications cause heat intolerance and extra care is required to keep children cool. Dress your child in loose fitting clothing so sweat can evaporate. Children may not be able to communicate feeling unwell due to heat stress Heat-induced seizures may occur. If your child has poor heat tolerance, contact the Community Health Nurse at school to discuss a

health care plan that will keep your child safe in summer. Backpacks Helpful tips when choosing your child‘s backpack Carrying a backpack can injure your child‘s back if care is not taken. Here are some helpful tips for

protecting young backs; Make sure that your child‘s backpack does not weigh more than 10% of his/her bodyweight. Choose a backpack with broad shoulder straps that are well padded and adjustable so it sits

comfortably on the shoulders. It should have waist and chest straps to keep the load in place and help evenly transfer the load to the hips and pelvis.

Encourage your child to wear both straps at all times to distribute the weight. Choose a padded back-support that allows the pack to fit ‗snugly‘ on the back. Adjust the straps so that the backpack fits close against the child‘s back. Choose a backpack which fits the child. The size should be in proportion to his/her body. Pack the heaviest items closest to the body and the lighter items further out. Make sure that your child is carrying only what she/he really needs to carry. Take notice of how your child is carrying the backpack – if your child is leaning forward to carry

the backpack, tighten the straps or lighten the load. When packed, ensure the backpack doesn‘t sag or pull backwards. Clip on the waist straps to keep the load in place when walking or cycling. Do not carry the backpack for long amounts of time, take regular breaks.
