Iam delighted to invite you to

join us for three weekends packed with energising folk-inspired music and drama. The first brings top-quality classical music to idyllic country churches,

the second celebrates Colchester with concerts, theatre, dance and exhibitions, and the third offers the opportunity to hear some rare orchestral masterpieces in the dramatic setting and breathtaking acoustic of Stoke-by-Nayland Church.

W elcomeWe bring you a theatrical dramatisation of the life of 16th-century composer Carlo Gesualdo, brand new choreography and a string quartet performed from memory in darkness. There are walks, family concerts, a day out singing sea shanties on a Maldon barge, a beer festival, talks and exhibitions, a hair-raising Bartók ballet set in a brothel, an epic Mahler symphony, new music by Mark-Anthony Turnage, Steve Reich and Tom Adès, and forgotten 400-year-old choral gems by Praetorius and Schein.

International stars Tim Hugh, Nicola Benedetti, James Gilchrist and Bellowhead’s Jon Boden will all appear at the Festival, and our musicians will give recitals in schools and take part in several other projects culminating on the final Sunday when schools, choirs, the Colne Valley Youth Orchestra, local brass bands and top pros combine for a joyous finale. Roman River musicians are already working in 8 primary schools, introducing the music and themes of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf ahead of a performance to 900 pupils at the Mercury Theatre.

I hope you’ll find something to treat yourself with, whether it is listening to some favourite uplifting music, getting a buzz from joining our Come & Sing choir, discovering the breathtaking talent of a young performer, or exploring a wonderful building. I can’t wait to share the festival with you.

Become a Friend

Roman River Music is a charity that relies heavily on support from its Friends, without which we could not even hope to produce such a rich and varied Festival, let alone continue our wide-ranging and ambitious education and outreach work across Colchester and in many of the surrounding villages.

Our year-round programme offers profound, engaging experiences for music lovers of all ages as well as creating first-access opportunities for many who would not otherwise have the chance to experience top-quality live performances without the costly and often daunting trip to London.

Help us bring music into the heart of Colchester and realise our dream to ensure every child in North Essex has the opportunity to sing, play and experience the enriching benefits of music-making, which can last a lifetime.

Friends enjoy priority booking for the Festival as well as access to special events and insider information about the work of Roman River Music throughout the year.

Please visit our website for further information or email [email protected] River Music is a registered charity number 1158366

Thank you

Our heartfelt thanks to the many organisations and individuals who have enabled the

Seventeenth Roman River Music Festival to take place in the heart of Colchester and beautiful surrounding North Essex countryside.

Support from local businesses and our generous Friends not only enables us to deliver this ambitious programme but also secures the future of our vital education and outreach work, giving a great many people the opportunity to experience life-enriching, top-quality professional performances in their home town.

Whether sponsoring a concert, accommodating musicians or delivering leaflets, the Festival is a culmination of hard work and dedication by a fantastic team, each person playing their part in this very special cultural celebration.

We have a dream to give every child in Colchester the opportunity to

be involved with music. We believe that music is for everyone; we can all get a huge amount out of singing, playing and listening. There is a growing body of academic studies supporting what many have observed anecdotally – that music boosts all areas of a child’s development, from academic (especially in maths and logic) to social and emotional development and self-confidence. Music is just as important as every other subject – in fact, because it helps so many other skills, it is a subject that every child should have the opportunity to learn. Music is essential to any healthy and successful school.

Working with our partners the Royal Opera House Bridge, Colchester’s Cultural Learning Network, The Pimlott Foundation, youth groups, Essex Music Hub and of course fantastic teachers at schools across Colchester, we run a huge range of projects from singing and composing with whole classes through to mentoring and masterclasses for talented young professionals. We make best use of over 100 top professional musicians who visit the area for our concerts each year, involving up to 1,000 children and young people from over 25 schools within reach of Festival venues.

We are hugely grateful to The Azima Foundation, Band Trust, Hervey Benham Charitable Trust and Friends of Roman River Music, without whose support we would not be able to involve so many young people and deserving groups.

Please see our website for details of our programme and how to get involved.

The Festival takes place in a lovely coastal region of East Anglia, with wide open skies above peaceful estuaries.

We are privileged to hold events in some unusual venues as well as beautiful, atmospheric churches. As these were built for worship rather than concerts, we offer seats at a reduced price where visibility is restricted. While we make every reasonable effort to make venues comfortable, you may like to bring a cushion and perhaps a blanket, particularly to the wonderfully historic but rather austere St Martin’s Church in Colchester.

We time events so you don’t have to miss supper and recommend various local B&Bs and eateries on our website – and you can join our enewsletter to be kept up to date with special offers! We will use your data respectfully and not share your details with any third parties.

Meanwhile please join us on social media to help promote Colchester’s flagship Festival.

If you have concerns about finding an event please get in touch. Parking for blue badge holders is available at most venues and our volunteers will be on hand to assist with access.

Doors open no later than 30 minutes before a performance. Latecomers will not be admitted until a suitable break and we are unable to offer refunds unless we have a returns queue.
