introductionWelding is the word used to describe the process of joining pieces of metal or non-metal at faces made plastic (deformable) or liquid (able to flow) by heat or pressure, or both. When allowed to cool, the molten metals and non-metals in the weld pool fuse (join) together so that, when they solidify, the join is as strong as, or stronger than, the parent metals. Welding is the most efficient, cost-effective and quickest method of making permanent joins between similar or dissimilar metals of different types and strengths.

The three main types of welding that rely on heat for fusion are:

Gas welding where a mixture of two different • gasses, either oxygen & acetylene or oxygen & liquid petroleum gas (LPG), are ignited to generate a heating flame that is applied to the workpiece(s); Stud and Spot welding where heat is generated by •

applying a voltage difference across a resistance; Arc welding that uses the heat from an electric • arc to generate the heat needed to melt or soften the materials to be joined. Consumables (such as electrodes, mig wire or filler wire) may be used to add filler material as the consumable itself melts with the heat of the arc, forming weld metal and transferring to the parent material.

Welding symbols are the shorthand of welding; they provide a concise means of relaying information on engineering drawings. Detailed information such as the type, size, orientation and finishing requirements of the weld joint can be communicated. Welding symbols do not always contain all the information required for welding. Reference is often given on the welding symbol, to a specification, process, procedure or other document which provides the necessary data to complete the welding operation.

aA – see Amperage

Alternating current – electricity which changes its direction of flow a certain number of times per second (its frequency). Ordinary household electrical supply in Australia has a frequency of 50 cycles per second, i.e. 50Hz. Abbreviation: AC. (See also direct current.)

Amperage – the amount of electricity flowing past a given point in a conductor in one second; also called current. Unit: amp; symbol: A as in 240V 10A.

Arc – electric current transferring from an electrode or terminal to a parent material, or between two surfaces at different voltages, across a poorly-conducting gap such as air.

Arc blow – when the magnetic field around the arc is unevenly distributed, the welding arc may be deflected.

Arc length – distance between the end of the electrode and the workpiece.

Arc voltage – the voltage needed to maintain an arc.

Arc welding (AW) – welding process in which heat from an electric arc (or arcs) melts the materials

being welded. The arc length and arc voltage must be enough to generate and maintain the heat necessary for fusion (melting) to occur.

Arc welding gun (hand piece) – a hand-held tool used to feed the electrode and aim the inert gas (if used).

As-welded – the ‘as-is’ condition of a weld before any further treatment such as peining.

AWS – American Welding Society.

bBacking strip – material placed under a weld to keep

molten metal at the root of the weld. The backing may be retained as part of the welded joint, or a temporary (removable) backing material such as ceramic strip or tiles may be used.

Back-step welding – successive weld beads are laid down in the direction opposite to that in which the weld is being made.

Bare electrode – a metal or alloy filler electrode which has no flux coating or covering (hence ‘bare’). Used for example in submerged arc automatic welding with gas shielding.

Base (parent) metal – the workpiece, that is, the metal to be welded (not the filler).

ATA Basic electrode – a welding electrode coated with

a flux having a high proportion of basic materials such as limestone and fluorite (fluorospar). (Basic here means the opposite of acidic.)

Bevel – the angle between the two edges of a joint to be welded. (Technically, a bevel is any angle other than a right angle.)

Braze welding (BW) – a method of joining metals using a non-ferrous alloy which melts at or above 450ºC, but at a temperature well below the melting point of the parent metals. The molten alloy is deposited to form the join without penetrating the parent metal by capillary action. (Compare brazing in which capillary action is involved.)

Brazing – a joining process in which molten filler (metal or alloy) flows into a narrow joint by capillary action, usually with the aid of a flux. The melting point of the filler is above 450°C, but always below the melting temperature of the parent metal.

Bronze welding – braze welding with a filler metal that is high in copper.

Buttering – a method of surface preparation in which one or two layers of weld metal are deposited on surfaces to be joined.

Butt weld – a welded join between two pieces of metal which butt against each other, that is, touch edge to edge, or end to edge, without overlap.

cCellulose electrode – a coated electrode in which the

covering contains at least 15 percent cellulose and up to 30 percent titania as rutile or titanium white.

CJT – combined joint thickness.

CO2 welding – gas metal arc welding using carbon dioxide (CO2) as the shielding gas. In the industry the term gas metal arc welding (GMAW) is preferred over CO2 welding.

**Cold metal transfer (CMT) – a MIG/MAG short-arc process with hot, cold, hot, cold characteristics that provides a straightforward way of joining steel and aluminium, almost spatter-free brazing of hot galvanised and electrolytically galvanised sheets using a filler wire made from an alloy of copper

and silicon, light-gauge welding of aluminium sheets (0.3 – 0.8 mm) and welding magnesium.

Conductor – any material that conducts (carries from one place to another) heat or electricity. Metals that have free electrons to carry electricity are good conductors. (The opposite property, that of resisting the flow of electricity, is called resistance.)

Constant voltage power source – in arc welding, a power supply designed to hold the terminal voltage constant across the range between full load and no load.

Consumables – those items and materials that are used up in welding, such as electrodes, filler wire, flux and gas.

Cored electrode – an electrode with a core of flux and/or alloying compounds.

Covered electrode – a filler metal electrode used in arc welding. The metal wire core has a thick covering of flux to protect the molten weld metal from atmospheric oxygen. This improves the quality of the weld and stabilises the arc.

Crater – a pit or cavity in the weld caused when the arc is broken suddenly before weld metal is laid down at that point.

Consumable guide welding – see Electroslag welding

dDC – see Direct current

Defect – any flaw in a weld. The most common weld defects are incomplete fusion, incomplete penetration, longitudinal cracking, porosity and undercutting.

Deoxidiser – chemical elements that combine with oxygen more readily than does any carbon present in the weld pool of the parent metal. Deoxidisers include aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), manganese (Mn) and silicon (Si). The first three elements listed are as much as five times more effective at deoxidising as are manganese and silicon.

Depth of fusion – the depth of molten metal in a weld.

Deposition efficiency – the proportion of weld metal deposited as a percentage of electrode metal used. For example, 88% deposition efficiency means 88kg of weld metal was deposited from 100kg of electrode.

Deposition rate – the mass of weld metal deposited in a given amount of time.

Dilution – change in composition of weld metal as it mixes with the molten parent metal during welding. The dilution factor is calculated as the proportion of melted parent metal to the weld metal, expressed as a percentage.

Dip transfer – see Short circuiting arc transfer

Direct current – electricity which always flows in one direction. (Compare alternating current, AC.) Abbreviation: DC.

Discontinuity – a defect or flaw in a weld caused when fusion between weld metal and parent metal is not continuous.

Drooping characteristic power source – an arc welding power source designed to deliver constant current; a large change in arc voltage produces only a small change in arc current. The short-circuit current is higher than the normal load current, preventing the electrode from freezing to the workpiece when the arc is first being struck.

Duty cycle – the proportion of productive time of a machine or person expressed as a percentage of total time. For an arc welding power source, the duty cycle is the fraction of a set time (usually five minutes) during which the welding machine can be used at a given amperage. For example, a duty cycle of 70% at 250 amps means the machine can deliver 250 amps for 3½ mins in every 5 minutes. For a welder, the duty cycle is the ratio of welding or cutting time to total work time, expressed as a percentage.

eElectrode – the conducting material which carries

the current that forms the arc between the electrode and the workpiece. As the electrode melts in the

heat of the arc, the metal of consumable electrodes is deposited as filler metal onto the workpiece. Depending on the specific type of electrode, compounds in the electrode may produce gas for shielding, deoxidizers, ionizers, purifying agents and alloying elements. Non-consumable electrodes (e.g. tungsten) act as a conductor only; their metal is not deposited onto the workpiece.

Electrode negative (‘straight polarity’) – the welding electrode is connected to the negative terminal of the DC power source.

Electrode positive (‘reverse polarity’) – the welding electrode is connected to the positive terminal of the DC power source.

Electrode stickout – the length of electrode protruding from the jaws of the handpiece or gun through which the current from the power source is delivered.

Electromotive force (EMF) – voltage. Unit: volt; symbol: V.

Electroslag welding (ESW) – a fusion welding technique in which one or more arcs are struck between continuously fed metal electrodes and the workpiece. Moving water-cooled copper shoes confine the molten metal, slag and flux as the weld progresses vertically.

fFCAW – see Flux-cored arc welding

Filler metal – a metal or mixture of metals added to the join during brazing, soldering or welding. Sources of filler metal include bare electrode wire/rod, coated electrodes, electrode wire extruded in the form of tubes, and welding fluxes.

Fillet welds – a weld joining two surfaces that are at, or nearly at, right angles to each other, forming a corner joint, lap joint or tee joint. A fillet weld is approximately triangular in cross-section; the bulk of the weld metal is above the surfaces of the parent metals.

Flat position (downhand) welding – welding above the join with the face of the weld horizontal.

ATA Fluid slag – free-flowing molten (liquid) slag.

Flux – a material applied to the join zone during braze welding, brazing, soldering or welding, to bring about a better join, to speed the joining process and to make the process more efficient in use of energy, materials, and operator and equipment time.

Friable slag – a slag that breaks up or crumbles readily and so is easily removed after welding.

Fusion face – that section of a surface to be melted (fused) in a fusion weld.

Fusion zone – the parts of the workpiece(s) that are melted during fusion welding.

Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) – arc welding where a flux-cored continuous feed strip or wire electrode provides the filler metal which is melted off the electrode and deposited as weld metal onto the workpiece. See Flux and Gas shielding.

Fusion welding – welding in which parent metals are fused (melted) together. A filler metal, usually of the same or similar composition, may also be added during fusion.

gGas metal arc welding (GMAW) – DC electric arc

welding under a shield of gas maintained between the weld pool and a continuous strip or wire filler metal electrode. GMAW welding is a highly efficient and productive technique, easy to use, with no need for slag-cleaning. Types of GMAW include MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding, using an inert (non-active) gas, and MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding, which uses an ‘active’ gas such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen.

Gas pore – a gas-filled cavity formed within a weld.

Gas shielding – a continuous flow of a gas or gas mixture is ducted through the welding gun, or through a nozzle, so that the gas flow is directed at and floods the fusion zone to create a gas shield. The gas, which is heavier than air, overlies and protects the hot metals from exposure to the atmosphere, particularly atmospheric oxygen which would cause oxidation. The gas or mixture comes from an external source such as bottles (that is, not from the flux coating the electrode).

Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) – arc welding using a non-consumable tungsten electrode and, usually, a filler metal. The weld area is flooded with an inert gas such as argon to exclude oxygen and so prevent oxidation, porosity and structural flaws. The current for the arc is supplied by a constant-current power supply; the arc conducts the energy through a column of plasma (highly ionised gas) and metal vapours. GTAW is also known as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.

Gas welding – welding, with or without additional filler metal, using heat from the combustion of a mixture of gasses stored separately at high pressure in metal containers. The pressure of the stored gasses is reduced by passage through an adjustable regulator, then the gasses are ducted into a handpiece where they are mixed in a mixing chamber and released though a perforated tip. Once ignited, a gas flame such as oxygen–acetylene can reach temperatures high enough for fusion of the metals to be joined. One of the gasses must be a fuel, such as acetylene or liquified petroleum gas (LPG); the other must be an oxidant, which is almost always pure oxygen, but sometimes air, which contains 21% oxygen, is used for economy.

Globular transfer – the transfer of filler metal from the consumable electrode to the weld pool in the form of globules. The globules of molten metal form on the end of the electrode, grow to a diameter larger than the diameter of the consumable electrode, then fall to the workpiece under gravity or by arc short-circuit. This technique of applying filler metal has the disadvantages of high heat production, requiring use of a larger electrode making a larger weld pool, spatter, and a poor, uneven weld surface.

GMAW – see Gas metal arc welding

GTAW – see Gas tungsten arc welding

hHard surfacing (hardfacing, cladding, overlaying) –

using welding processes to apply wear-resistant or abrasion-resistant alloy(s) to harden metal edges or faces subject to extreme wear. Weld wire used in hardfacing contains up to 50% of its weight in alloying materials such as chromium (Cr) and nitrogen (N) compounds.

Heat affected zone (HAZ) – the region of the base metal which was not melted during brazing, cutting or welding, but which was affected by the heat to an extent that changed its metallurgical (e.g. microstructure) and mechanical (e.g. tensile strength) properties.

Hertz – the unit of frequency, that is, the number of times a regularly recurring event repeats in one second. Symbol: Hz. 1 Hertz (Hz) = 1 cycle per second; 50Hz = 50 cycles per second.

High frequency – frequencies greater than 50,000Hz, that is, 50kHz (kilo Hertz). Used in gas-tungsten-arc (GTA or TIG) welding for arc, ignition and stabilisation.

Horizontal position – a welding position in which the weld line is horizontal or nearly so.

Hydrogen controlled electrode – electrodes for which the amount of hydrogen they deposit in filler metal has been determined. Such electrodes are rated by an AWS designator of H2, H4 or H8. H2 electrodes are rated at < (less than) 2mL diffusible hydrogen per 100g of filler metal deposited; H4 < 4mL and H8 < 8mL.

Hz – see Hertz

iIncomplete fusion – a weld discontinuity caused by

lack of fusion between the weld metal and fusion faces or adjoining weld beads. Incomplete fusion results when the parent metal or weld (filler) metal is not heated to its melting point.

Incomplete joint penetration – a discontinuity in a weld caused when weld metal doesn’t penetrate the joint thickness and the filler metal or base metal do not fill the root of the weld completely. Incomplete joint penetration may be caused when a) the weld bead does not penetrate through the thickness of the base plate b) the weld bead bridges across but does not penetrate the toe of a fillet weld c) weld beads on opposite sides of the workpiece do not interpenetrate.

Included angle – the angle between the surfaces to be welded when viewed from the weld side.

Inductance – when the flow of current in an electrical circuit increases or decreases, the magnetic field created by the current changes. This change in magnetic field in a conducting circuit induces an electromotive force (voltage) that opposes the flow of current. This property of electrical circuits is called inductance and is used in the design and operation of an inductor.

Inductor (stabiliser) – the high-inductance part of the control circuitry of a welding power supply that limits the rate and extent of change in current flow, hence it acts as a ‘stabiliser’. By smoothing out (reducing) the extent of changes in arc current, an inductor helps limit spatter and improves wetting.

** Insufficient throat – caused by excess concavity in weld profiles where the concavity reduces throat thickness and therefore weld strength.

Intermittent weld – a non-continuous or interrupted series of weld beads along a join.

Interrun (interpass) temperature – the temperature of the weld and base metal just before the next weld run.

Inverter – electronic circuitry which converts DC electricity to AC. (The opposite transformation, AC DC, is called rectification.)

Iron powder electrode – an electrode with a flux coating containing iron powder to improve weld speed and metal deposition.

jJoint penetration – the distance that weld metal

penetrates into a weld joint.

Joint preparation – the work done to prepare workpieces for welding.

kKsi (kip, ‘kilo-pound-force per square inch’) –

1000 pounds per square inch, using the SI prefix ‘kilo’ for 1000, with the abbreviation psi for pounds per square inch.

Landing – see root face

Lap joint – a joint formed between two pieces of material that are laid one over the other and then joined. If no material is removed from either piece, the joint has the thickness of both (full lap). Commonly, half the thickness of each piece is removed before joining, making a ‘half lap’ joint which has less than the thickness of both pieces combined.

Leg length – the length of a fillet weld measured from the root to the toe.

mMAG (Metal Active Gas) welding – see Gas metal

arc welding

Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW) – arc welding with a flux-covered electrode manually applied and replaced by the welder as it is consumed, that is, replacement of the electrode is not automatic. Breakdown of the electrode coating releases shielding materials or gasses. In America, this is termed Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).

Mechanised welding – welding carried out by automated or semi-automated equipment.

MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding – see Gas metal arc welding

Mitre fillet weld – a fillet weld in which the pieces to be joined are cut at an angle other than a right angle. A common mitre fillet weld has each piece cut at an angle 45º so that, when joined, the two form a right angle corner.

Multiple arc welding – welding using more than one electrode powered from a single source (twin arc), or from separate power sources using separate nozzles (tandem arc).

nNarrow gap welding – welding using a special

narrow torch (8mm wide) that can reach into grooves, allowing very thick plates to be joined using few weld passes.

Non-transferred arc – an arc struck between the electrode and the torch nozzle to form a plasma gas. The plasma heats the workpiece to a conducting temperature which then attracts a second arc without extinguishing the first.

oOCV – see Open-circuit voltage

Open-circuit voltage (OCV) – the voltage maintained between the terminals of a power supply under open-circuit conditions, that is, when no current is flowing.

Overhead position – welding done from beneath the joint with the welder reaching up to it.

Oxygen-acetylene welding – welding using heat generated by burning a mixture of oxygen and acetylene.

pPartial penetration – a weld in which the weld pool

does not penetrate to the full depth of the joint.

Pascal – SI unit of pressure. 1Pa ≡ 1 N/m2 (one Newton per square metre). [For comparison, 1 atm = 101,325 Pa or 101.325kPa.]

Pass – see Weld run

Peining – striking weld metal with a hammer to relieve residual stress or correct distortion.

Penetration bead – weld metal applied to one side of the workpiece that extends through the root of a fusion weld to appear on the other side.

Plasma – a highly excited (energised) phase of matter, a super-hot mixture of energetic and disassociated gas molecules, positively charged ions and free electrons generated by an electric arc (usually DC) struck between negative and positive electrodes.

Plasma arc welding (PAW) – a fusion welding process in which the heat needed to fuse (melt) the workpiece metal(s) is transferred to the joint by a plasma stream. The plasma, very hot ionised gas, is formed from an inert gas by the energy of a shielded electric arc struck between a non-consumable electrode and the torch body. The plasma stream delivers very concentrated high energy to a small area of the workpiece. Additional shielding of the fusion zone by inert gas(ses) is usually needed.

Porosity – a cavity-type of discontinuity formed by gas being trapped in the weld pool, forming bubbles or pockets as the weld solidifies.

Porous slag – a slag containing numerous gas cavities.

Positioner – any mechanical system for gripping and rotating the workpiece(s) to the position or angle required for welding most efficiently.

Post-welding heat treatment (PWHT) – heating the workpiece after welding, for example to relieve internal residual stresses.

Preheat – heating the workpiece before welding or cutting.

PSI (pounds per square inch) – imperial unit of pressure (force per unit area). 1 psi ≡ 1 lbf/in2 = 6,895 Pa.

Pulsed arc (spray) welding – welding in which the polarity is regularly reversed and the current is pulsed (made to rise and fall regularly). The pulsed current is superimposed over a base-level current at constant voltage DC. This enables metal transfer

across the arc in spray mode at current flows less than the globular spray transition current.

Pulsing – a regular rise and fall. In pulsed arc welding, polarity and current are pulsed to regulate the duration of the arc.

r**Rectification – converting AC electricity to DC.

Reinforcement – weld metal added to strengthen a join, applied outside the plane where the weld face and base metal meet.

Residual welding stress – unrelieved stresses in a workpiece following welding. These stresses are set up, in part, by differences in the amount of heat applied across the whole piece. While the weld fusion zone has reached the melting temperature of the parent metals, other parts of large workpieces may be barely warm to the touch. These temperature differences create zones with different amounts of thermal expansion.

Resistance – the property of opposing (‘resisting’) the flow of heat or electricity. Unit Ohm; symbol: Ω (the Greek letter omega).

Resistance welding – welding two pieces of metal by applying electrodes under pressure from opposite sides of the join. No arc is struck; the heat causing fusion is generated by current flowing from one electrode across the resistance of the metals to the other electrode, creating a spot weld.

RMS (Root Mean Square) – the effective mean power level of an alternating electrical supply. Equal to 1/√2 (.7071) times the peak value.

Robotic arc welding – automatic arc welding done by microprocessor-controlled robotic equipment. This involves high duty cycles requiring specially adapted welding equipment.

Root face – the distance from the root of a joint to the point where the bevel angle begins.

Root gap – the distance between edges or surfaces to be joined.

Root of weld – the point at which the weld comes closest to the root of the joint.

Short-circuiting arc transfer (dip transfer) – metal from a consumable electrode is transferred to the workpiece by dipping the electrode into the molten weld pool, ‘shorting’ the arc.

SI (Système International) – system of metric units such as kilogram and metre.

Silver brazing (silver soldering) – brazing using a silver alloy as the filler metal.

Size of weld – the extent of weld penetration into a butt joint or groove weld.

Slag inclusion – slag that is trapped in a weld made with use of flux.

Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) – American term for Manual metal arc welding (MMAW)

Soft soldering – see soldering

Soldering – a method of joining two metals at their surfaces using a molten filler alloy such as lead and tin that is made to run into and around the joint. The melting point of the filler metal is less than 450ºC, that is, well below the melting temperature of the parent metal(s).

Spatter – weld metal which is spat out during welding and does not become incorporated into the weld.

Spot weld – a point weld made by Resistance welding.

Submerged arc welding (SAW) – an arc welding process in which a shielding layer of granular flux is laid over the joint before welding begins. The flux melts in the heat of the arc and mixes with the molten metal in the weld pool where it combines with impurities to form a glassy slag. The result is the weld is submerged under the layers of flux beads and slag.

Spray transfer – Metal transfer which takes pace as a rapid projected stream of droplets of diameter not larger than that of the consumable electrode from which they are transferred.

Stress relief heat treatment – Heating to, and if necessary holding at, some temperature generally below the transformation range, usually followed

by slow cooling, for the purpose of reducing internal stresses.

Stringer bead run – A bead or run made without intentional weaving motion.

tTack weld – one or more beads or short-run welds

laid down to prevent metals to be jointed from moving out of alignment while the rest of the welding is done.

Throat thickness – for butt welds, the thickness of the thinner part joined, provided full penetration is obtained and the weld is sealed. For incompletely penetrated and unsealed butt welds, the effective throat thickness is taken to be 0.625 x thickness of the thinner part.

TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding – the heat for welding is generated by an electric arc struck between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece shielded by pure argon, an inert (non-reactive) gas. The argon is ducted through the torch onto the weld zone to shield the electrode and the molten weld pool from atmospheric oxygen which would oxidise the hot metals and render the weld defective. The hot metals do not react with argon. Tungsten is the material of choice for the electrode because it has a high melting point and good electrical conductivity. Also known as Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).

Tinning – in brazing and braze welding, the process of applying a thin layer of flux and filler metal onto surfaces to be joined to create a strong bond between parent metal and weld deposit.

T-joint – name given to a joint formed by two pieces touching edge to edge or end to edge so that the resulting shape resembles the letter T.

Toe – the point where a weld face touches the parent metal or another weld face

Touch (scratch) start – in TIG (GTAW), the electrode is touched to the workpiece to initiate (start) an arc, then raised to the correct distance from the workpiece to sustain the air gap and resistance needed to maintain the arc.

Touch welding – arc welding using an electrode with a coating that allows the electrode to be held in contact against the parent metal, making it easier for the operator to control the length of arc.

Transferred arc – a plasma arc struck between a tungsten electrode and the workpiece.

Tungsten – tungsten has the highest melting temperature (3410ºC) of all pure metals. When used in GTAW, the electrode is not consumed, although erosion (burn-off) can occur.

uUndercut – melting parent material from the side

wall of a groove weld at the edge of a bead, so creating a recess in the side wall, or melting and thus thinning the parent metal at the toe of a fillet weld or butt joint.

vV – see voltage

Vertical position – welding carried out with the weld root at or near vertical.

Viscous slag – a slag which, although molten, does not flow readily into the weld pool.

Voltage – the ‘pressure’ (electromotive force) that ‘pushes’ electrons through a conductor. Voltage does not flow, but causes electrons to flow, creating current. (Compare pressure of water in a hose: the higher the pressure the greater the flow; with electricity, the higher the voltage the greater the current for a given resistance.) In Australia, ordinary household single phase AC electricity is 240 volts 50 cycles AC, written 240V 50 Hz. For comparison, ordinary household electricity supply in America is 110V 60 Hz, which is why equipment designed for American voltage cannot be used in Australia unless modified to take the higher voltage.)

Voltage reduction device (VRD) – a device used to reduce the OCV of welding machines to lower and safer levels.

wWeaving – side-to-side movements of the tip end of

the electrode during welding.

Welding procedure – the detailed description of the procedure to follow, and materials to be used, to make a weld. Such specification would include voltage and amperage settings on the power supply, for electric welding; the oxygen–acetylene gas mixtures; and consumables to be used — electrode type, shielding gasses etc.

Weld face – the weld when seen looking at the surface to which the weld was applied.

Weld junction – where the fusion zone meets the heat affected zone (HAZ) of a weld.

Weld metal – the metal melted or added during welding that remains in the weld.

Weld run (weld pass) – the weld made during a single pass of the welding gun.
