Background

elevators

A study was commissioned from Lerch Bates Inc. to establish the number and duty of the passenger and service elevators needed to serve the proposed new addition and associated program changes. The study included observations and counts of existing elevators at the Hospital and an analysis of their capacity to determine a baseline need or excess capacity. Elevator calculations were provided by Lerch Bates to establish requirements for additional elevators and required elevator modifications. The vertical transport services proposed in the West Wing Addition are sized to supplement the existing capacity and programs as well as providing capacity for both the Phase I scope and future programs as outlined in these Schematic Design Documents.

chutes

The current hospital is served by two vertical materials chutes. One if is for trash and one for linen. The chutes are located in the central vertical core and serve LL-L9. The chutes are serviced at termination rooms on the Lower Level.

pneumatic tubes

The existing Hospital has a robust 6 inch tube pneumatic tube system. The system was installed by Swisslog Translogic and is a selective by-pass system which is proprietary to Swisslog. Lerch Bates was commissioned to study the system and make recommendations to serve the West Wing Addition and associated changes. The Schematic Design Documents include these recommendations and reflect the service locations required to serve the new program. The system will allow for the future stations and capacity to serve the future program expected to infill shelled spaces.

Existing Hospital Elevator Service

Existing Ambulatory Pavilion Elevator Service

The Children’s Hospital East Addition and Remodel

Proposed enhancements of the existing elevator service are to be complimentary and when possible use excess existing capacity. Most elevators in the existing Hospital and Ambulatory pavilion will not need to be modified. Existing elevators that serve the lower level to level 9 of the Patient Tower are proposed to be extended to level 10. This will allow those cars to serve the proposed level 10 bed floor in the West Wing Addition. While extending these elevators can be disruptive and costly it allows the primary patient access for all floors to be

through the main atrium and insures that people using any tower elevator will have access to all floors without a transfer. In addition to this, the future patient Trauma Elevator will be provided in the existing empty hoistway.

Level 10 is planned as a shelled floor. The extension of existing elevators to serve level 10 can be delayed until the level is completed. These extensions only service this floor.

Modifications Proposed to Existing Elevators (Modfications shown in Bold type)

New Elevators

The Children’s Hospital East Addition and Remodel

In the addition to the modification of the existing Hospital Elevators new Elevators are proposed in the New Addition. Capacity of the existing public elevators (AE401-404) serving the patient tower will be reserved for the public by shifting existing staff traffic to three additional 500 fpm, 5000lb Material/Staff Elevators in the new addition. These elevators will also provide additional service capacity to preserve the Patient Trauma/Patient elevators (AE301-304) for patient use. These new elevators also allow both materials and staff access to be oriented in a way that does not require entering the elevators on to primary public circulation corridors.

Two new 500 fpm, 3500lb Public Elevators are proposed to provide access from the Intermediate Lobby Level (IL) to the clinic floor and the Maternal Fetal Floor of the new addition. One of these elevators also provides service access to the Lower Level for the retail space at the lobby.

To provide future capacity an empty shaft is provided.

chutes

existing chutes

The existing trash and linen chutes have capacity to serve the patient rooms on all levels. More frequent service times will be required at the Lower Level termination rooms. These chutes will not be modified.

new chutes

A new garbage and linen chute are proposed to serve procedure areas on L1-L4. This chute will terminate at the LL and require service from the termination room to the loading dock.

pneumatic tubes

The attached table indicates proposed modifications and additions to the existing pneumatic tube stations.

EXISTING FACILITY EAST WING ADDITION

The Children’s Hospital East Addition and Remodel

Additions to the system will be a 6 inch system compatible with the existing Swisslog system. The existing system is configured into 6 interconnected zones. The new addition will be served by a new base system of 2 zones with a maximum of 10 stations per zone. The existing and new systems will be interconnected. The planning for the future floor stations is included in the schematic design. The work associated with the stations on these floors could be phased with the build-out of the floors.

There will be modifications to the existing interchange room and an addition of 2 blowers to the existing blower room to facilitate the interchange of the systems.
