The heavy rains being experienced across the country are expected to intensify throughout the month of May and decrease in early June, the meteorology department has said.

This was revealed on Tuesday by William George Omony, a meteorologist in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.

“Prevailing warm sea surface temperature anomalies across much of the western Indian Ocean are likely to trigger the influx of moisture into our country, hence increasing wet

conditions throughout the month of May,” said Omony.

He observed that due to the rains that are expected to increase this month, farmers in areas that are prone to flooding and those whose farmlands are in wetlands should look out for crops that can withstand floods.

“During this period, farmers should consider what type of crops to plant, especially in areas that are prone to floods. Farmers should plant crops that are resistant to such conditions,” explained Omony.

“The eastern-central region which includes Pallisa, Budaka, Mbale, Sironko, Manafwa, Bududa, Kapchorwa, Kumi, Kaberamaido, Soroti, Serere, Amolatar, Butaleja, Bulambuli, Kween, Bukedea and Ngora will receive more rain than usual,” added Omony.

He said heavy rains are also expected in the western region districts of Bundibugyo, Ntoroko, Kabarole, Kyenjojo,

Kyegegwa, Kamwenge, Masindi, Buliisa, Hoima and Kibaale. The next seasonal weather forecast will be released early June, said Omony.

Not all gloomDespite flooding in some areas, experts said the period is likely to increase agricultural production, especially through increased foliage for animal husbandry and facilitating quick growth and maturity of crops.

The department also advises farmers to take advantage of the rains and harvest enough water for domestic use.

Newsn Experts said floods aside, the rains will help boost agri-culture and avail families with water for domestic use

ConTInUEd fRom PagE 1 “The President called me twice this morning asking whether we are okay,” Isaac Musumba told New Vision yesterday.

He, however, declined to divulge details of what they discussed.

Tamale Mirundi, the presidential press secretary, also confirmed that the President had talked to the trio, but said he didn’t know what they discussed.

Musumba (former regional co-operation minister), Michael Mawanda (Igara East MP) and Mathias Magoola, a businessman (mineral dealer), are still being held in India over claims that they attempted to extort $20m (about sh50b) from directors of Videocon India, an electronics company.

The trio could face charges of extortion, criminal trespass and impersonation.

Musumba, Mawanda and Magoola face at least three years in jail in India if they are found guilty of extortion.

Although Musumba has a diplomatic passport, he doesn’t enjoy diplomatic immunity, according to Peter Nyombi, the Attorney General.

“He was the only one with the diplomatic passport, which he had as a former minister. However, he was in India on private

business. So, there is no way he can be immune to prosecution,” sources quoted the Attorney General as saying.

Sources further said Musumba’s case has split senior technocrats in the justice and foreign affairs ministry.

Some officials in the ministry reportedly want the Government to hire lawyers to defend the trio.

Musumba defiantMusumba insists that Videocon owes his client, Magoola, $37m (about sh96b) over a mining business transaction. He argues that he had accompanied his client to India to ask for the money.

MP Mawanda denied having been part of Musumba’s trip, saying it was only a coincidence that they were all in India.

International job awaits MusumbaMusumba is Uganda’s candidate for the post of secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

The post will fall vacant in January 2014 when Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, completes his two terms in office.

The OIC is the second largest inter-governmental organisation after the United Nations, with a membership of 57 states spread over four continents.
