A Message from Fr. Hurley The Grace of Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all, “... why are you standing there looking at the sky?” This weekend we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, and next Sunday is Pentecost. This was quite an Easter season. We certainly live in interesting times. The astonishing things we see today are not unlike the astonishing times of the first disciples. The quotation I began with comes from today’s Acts of the Apostles reading. In it the angel appeared to the disciples in a bewildering time. Christ is risen and now commits another unimaginable, life altering act by Ascending to the Father in order to ensure His command over all people forever. Much like a military operation where the commander takes the high ground in order to observe and direct the battle from the greatest advantage point. So, our Lord Ascends in order to ensure we are given the greatest advantage of His support for us. As usual the disciples don’t get it at first, and consequently the angel reminds them about their role in Christ’s mission. Now Christ is in position to support and direct the disciples in that mission. So, for us as well, we too need to get back to work and stop “looking at the sky.” For us, I believe, looking at the sky is about the distractions in our lives that prevent us from participating more fully in the mission of Jesus Christ. And we now have an important mission of getting back to celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Currently, the diocese is providing some details of requirements that we must meet in order to get back to Mass. At this point, I want to caution folks to be patient with our initial startup. Of course, we all want to be safe and not cause any harm so we keep that in mind. I hope we can begin this weekend of Ascension with some type of Mass schedule. But we need volunteers to help do sanitizing work in the church between Masses. Our custodian will get the supplies and direct the effort but we need volunteers for each Mass. Please call or email the parish so we can celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Also, the first few weeks of Masses will be a bit different. But we will do our best, and as the reading from Acts today says; we will get back to work (praising God and worshipping the best we can)! At this point, my message is really about the need we have for assistance in the work of getting back to celebrating Mass - even with some restrictions. The other need is keeping everyone aware of the on-going offertory needs we must maintain. Collection points will be available at the church, but by far the best offertory method is on-line. Please consider, if you are able, to try the on-line offertory method. I look forward to seeing folks again, and continue to pray for safety of every member of St. Mary’s parish. Peace, Fr. Paul

A Reflection for the Seventh Sunday of Easter It is after the Ascension. The remaining Apostles “have kept the Father’s word”; “they have believed that the Father sent Jesus.” They witness to the Father’s glory by enacting their own sort of “triumphal” entry into Jerusalem, redolent of Christ’s on Palm Sunday. It was triumphant “when they entered the city” because the Eleven were deeply united in faith and charity, resolved to do the will of the Father. It is not a coincidence the way that their actions mimic those of the Savior: they go to the Upper Room and there devote themselves to prayer with one accord. As a result of this conviction, persecution is soon to follow, but they will rejoice to the extent that they share in the sufferings of Christ.

Cardinal Seán O’Malley has announced a Year of the Eucharist to bolster the faith of those who already believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and to encourage those who struggle with this belief. Over the course of the next year and a half, the Cardinal invites all Catholics in the Archdiocese of Boston to learn more about the Eucharist and to spend more time before the Eucharistic Lord, asking Him to reveal Himself to you. “For even though a priest should offer Mass in private, that Mass is not something private; it is an act of Christ and of the Church. In offering this Sacrifice, the Church learns to offer herself as a sacrifice for all. Moreover, for the salvation of the entire world she applies the single, boundless, redemptive power of the Sacrifice of the Cross. For every Mass is offered not for the salvation of ourselves alone, but also for that of the whole world.”

Mysterium Fidei, Mystery of Faith – On the Doctrine and Worship of the Eucharist, Pope Paul VI - 1965 Adoration of the Holy Eucharist Given that all our routine and scheduled liturgical actives are suspended in order to reduce all unnecessary risks, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed each day between the hours of 3pm and 5 pm. There will be no ritual Exposition and Benediction, but the Blessed Sacrament will be simply exposed during those hours. There are no group gatherings of any sort but simply time and space for individuals to be with the Lord Jesus Christ. These are opportunities for individuals to pray with the Lord, to listen to the Lord or simply come to offer a prayer or a rosary. Again, these are individual opportunities for prayer at the church. Of course, we are all encouraged to pray no matter where we are. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us!

The Month of Mary

Many parishioners have requested to learn a little more about the Blessed Mother, especially as she is the focal point of our parish and this is the month dedicated to her. Mary, the mother of Jesus, commonly referred to as Mary, Mother of God, Saint Mary, Virgin Mary and Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most admired figures in Scripture and considered by many to be the greatest of all Catholic saints. She was a willing servant who trusted God and obeyed His call. While her life held great honor, her calling also required great suffering. Though there was joy in motherhood, there was great pain in the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah. Despite these things, she responded to God with great obedience and submission to His

plan. Her life never robbed Jesus of His glory, for her mission was to witness the glory of the Son of God. Below are a few fascinating facts about Mary, Mother of Jesus that everyone might appreciate knowing. Mary loved God and wanted to serve Him with all her heart. But she was just a poor girl in an insignificant town, from a humble family, with little expectations that her life going to be any different than most. When the angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her she was chosen and favored by God to be the mother of His son, despite her own fear, she exhibited great courage and character: “I am the Lord’s servant…May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38). She also exhibited great courage and character during Jesus’ earthly life and ministry. She pressed Jesus to provide wine when it ran low at the wedding in Cana, she approached Jesus when He was left behind at the temple, she went from Nazareth to Capernaum when she learned what was being reported their about Jesus, and she attempts to protect Jesus in some of the stickiest of situations. She was a person of discipleship and faith, and the first true follower of Jesus. Mary is considered by many to be the greatest of all saints because she was chosen and prepared by God to be the mother of His Son, and because she freely chose to cooperate fully in the graces given to her and in the vocation she received. In Mary’s Song of Praise (The Magnificat), she says, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has looked on the humble estate of His servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for He who is mighty had done great things for me, and holy is His name” (Luke 1:46-49). The first recorded miracle of Jesus was performed at a wedding in Cana. In John 2:1-2, we are told, “When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants. ‘Do whatever he tells you.’” Mary was instrumental in calling Jesus’ attention to the need and these verses remind us of Jesus’ true purpose. She was also present at the Crucifixion in Jerusalem. There, she was given into John the Apostle’s care. Let us always be mindful of Mary’s life and let us pray to her often for she intercedes on our behalf to her son! Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Inside the Mass: The Liturgy of the Eucharist (Part III) May the peace of the Lord be with you! This weekend we continue our reflection inside the Mass with the third part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, specifically with the Eucharistic Prayer that includes:

1. Preface 2. Holy, Holy, Holy 3. First half of Eucharistic Prayer, including Consecration 4. Mystery of Faith 5. Second half of Eucharistic Prayer, ending with Doxology

The Preface “The Lord be with you,” is the oldest set of text in the Mass and is exchanged between the priest and the assembly. We are then invited to turn to the Lord in prayer. The priest then asks us to lift our hearts to the Lord and to give thanks and praise to God. The Preface is an introductory prayer, which gives a specific reason for our thanksgiving. It is prayed by the priest alone, and it is the second longest prayer in the Mass after the Eucharistic Prayer, and it changes daily and by the season depending on the theme of the Mass. Holy, Holy, Holy The Preface concludes with the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) in which the whole assembly joins the song of the angels giving praise to the Father in heaven. It is one of the oldest elements of the liturgy. Like the prophet Isaiah, we fall on our knees in awe, for we realize the presence of something greater than ourselves. When we can, we kneel after the Sanctus, as the solemn moment follows, of the consecration of bread and wine into the body and blood of our Lord. First half of Eucharistic Prayer, including Consecration The first half of the Eucharistic Prayer, called the Epiclesis, is an invocation of God to send the Holy Spirit to change the bread and wine into the Risen Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Specifically, and unambiguously God is called on to transform the offering of bread and wine into the Risen Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

The Consecration Here the elements are consecrated and transformed into the Risen Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. This is the key moment of the Catholic Mass. During the consecration, the priest takes the bread and then the wine and repeats over them the words and actions of our Lord during the Last Supper.

Transubstantiation During the Epiclesis or invocation, God is called upon to send the Holy Spirit and transform the bread and wine into the Risen Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. During consecration, when the priest speaks, “This is my body,” the substance of the bread is transformed into the Body of Jesus Christ. The priest then shows the Host to the assembly and may place the consecrated Host on the paten. When the priest speaks, “This is my blood,” the substance of the wine is transformed in the Blood of Jesus Christ. The priest shows the Chalice to the assembly and places the consecrated wine on the corporal. The simple gifts of bread and wine are transformed into the real Body and Blood of Christ, not a representation or a symbol of Christ, but an actual transformation known as transubstantiation.

Mystery of Faith After the Chalice has been shown to the assembly, the priest invites us to proclaim the Mystery of Faith. The Mystery of Faith is the Eucharist. The statement “The Mystery of Faith” is just that, a statement by the priest to the assembly about what just happened on the altar.

Memorial Acclamation Our proclamation is to acknowledge the great miracle that just occurred before us. We are proclaiming that great mystery of faith of the bread and wine becoming the Risen Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. We make our proclamation with one of the three memorial acclamations designated for the Mass.

Second half of the Eucharistic Prayer Remembrance After the memorial acclamation, the priest invites us to “Call to mind” or remember the great events of our salvation, death, Resurrection and Ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Offering In that memory, we offer the sacrifice, calling on God to offer the sacrifice in union with all the sacrifices in the past. In the offering, the miracle of transubstantiation is applied to our benefit when we receive the Risen Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Intercessions The priest intercedes with the Father. We pray for those who have departed, and we pray “for us sinners.” Final Doxology The priest lifts the Host and the Chalice proclaiming the doxology, the words of praise linking the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Great Amen Amen means, I believe it. So be it. It is true. It is a truly magnificent and glorious, and a fitting way to conclude the Eucharistic Prayer in which the extraordinary miracle of the Transubstantiation just took place.

Next week we will continue with the fourth and last part of the liturgy of the Eucharist.
