Lenten Regulations 2020
Abstinence: all persons who have already
celebrated their 14th birthday are bound
to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday,
all Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.
Fasting: everyone, from the celebration of
their 18th birthday to their 59th birthday, is
bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday. Fasting is generally under-
stood to mean eating only one full meal
each day. Two other partial meals,
sufficient to maintain strength, may be
taken; but together they should not equal
another full meal. Eating between meals is
not permitted, but liquids are allowed.
Voluntary fasting on other weekdays of
Lent is highly recommended. But please
note: when health or ability to work would
be seriously affected, neither the law of
fasting nor the law of abstinence
obliges. These are minimal penitential
practices and should not be lightly
excused. If in doubt, please consult your
parish priest.
Other recommended forms of fasting, as
regards alcoholic drink, needless television,
video games, internet use, and social
entertainment, are of true spiritual value
and strongly encouraged.
Almsgiving: The act of giving to the poor, in
the most ancient tradition of the Church, is
an expression of penance, a witness of
fraternal charity, and an expression of
Lenten conversion. Therefore, all Catholics
are encouraged to support generously the
charitable works of the whole Church:
through regular stewardship to their parish,
support of charities, and their generous
response to the diocesan Catholic
Stewardship Appeal.
Prayer: In order to deepen one’s love for
Christ, Catholics are urged all the more to
participate in the Sacramental life of the
Church during Lent by attending
daily Mass and frequenting the Sacrament
of Penance and Reconciliation.
We would like to express our sympathy
to the Scheiner families on the death
of Kathy’s sister, Millie Boyd.
We would like to express our sympathy
to the Pugh family on the death of
their brother in law, Earl Wayne Fierge.

Thank you for your continued prayers for

we continue to pray and turn to God. I

Guest Speaker - Sunday, February 23rd
Chad Volmert is a 20 year old Catholic speaker who is currently studying to get his
degree in Theology. Chad was born in Jefferson City, MO and graduated from Jefferson City
High School in 2018. Chad was always drawn toward his faith growing up, but often kept God
at a distance. During his senior year of high school, after falling in a hole and making mistake
after mistake, he finally realized how important his faith was and made his relationship with
God a priority in his life. Since then Chad has started studying to get his degree in Theology
and has been in a documentary titled “40 Days and 40 Nights” where he gives up some of
the most important things in his life up for Lent.
Since creating this documentary Chad has traveled to parishes and schools talking
about the importance of Lent and showing the documentary. In the Spring of 2020 Chad is
going on tour giving speeches at places like The University of Missouri, The University of South
Dakota, and The University of Lincoln Nebraska. In these speeches, Chad hopes he can
make the world a better place in the name of Jesus Christ, and bring people closer to God.
PROLIFE Across AMERICA
Diann Foster, Missouri Rep would like to thank everyone for the support for the annual PROLIFE
Across AMERICA Longaberger/Quilt raffle, there were 32 prizes drawn, the following winners are
from St. Brendan: Sue Hotop, Elaine Hansett, Evelyn Fennessey, Deb Diblasi, Marion Lankford,
Julie Lang, Pat Teague, Elgie Deimeke, Sherri Orr, Mary Scheuler, Bonnie Pursifull, Mary Esther
Jahn, Fred Jacobi.
Funds raised from this yearly raffle are used to pay area billboard rent. Thanks to those who
donated beautiful quilts, baskets and pottery for this annual fundraiser.
A group of parishioners have been
working with me and a consulting
firm called Parish Success Group that
partners with several parishes in our
diocese to evaluate and better our
parish. We are now beginning to
develop a vision for key areas of
improvement in carrying out our
mission.
At the same time, our whole diocese
is about to begin a pastoral planning
process. We have an important
opportunity both to develop a parish
plan and to contribute to the
diocesan plan. I am inviting you to
participate, especially through our
existing small faith groups. The
diocese has given us a booklet to
facilitate 4 sessions (during Lent),
each of which includes a
discernment page to be submitted to
the parish office. This helps us see
areas in which God may be calling
our parish to grow. The parish
pastoral council will compile all of this
information and use it to help
develop a parish pastoral plan. This
plan, in turn, will influence the
diocesan pastoral plan.
More information on this process is
available at: www.diojeffcity.org/
better-together
Again, I invite you and/or your small
faith group or other group to
participate during Lent and to submit
your feedback. Booklets are
available at the parish office or can
be viewed/printed for free from the
webpage given above.
Information on this process will also
be available on Feb. 23 when we
have our Lenten Speaker, Chad
Volmert, following the 9am Sunday
Mass.
Another part of this process involves
a special invitation from Bishop
McKnight to our young people. Our
parish will be sending a select
delegation of high-school students to
the Diocesan Youth Summit in May to
provide input in this planning process.
Most of all, please pray and sacrifice
for our diocese and parish.
