Welcome to the 16th Annual

Research and Evidence-Based Practice

Conference at UCLA! This one-day conference is intended to provide an opportunity to raise awareness of new healthcare trends, while supporting quality improvement, evidence‐based practice, research and innovation at the bedside.

The 2017 conference program features a wide range of topics focusing on transforming practice and research through interprofessional collaboration. We are pleased to welcome keynote speaker Barbara Brandt, PhD, EdM, a recognized expert in innovation, leadership and the development of effective evidence‐based processes and systems for patient care. The conference will also feature an impressive range of other speakers, podium and poster presentations representing researchers, clinicians, educators, and students; and invaluable networking opportunities.

Keynote Speaker

Barbara Brandt, PhD, EdM

Renowned for her work in health professional education, and specifically, interprofessional education and continuing education, Dr. Barbara Brandt serves as associate vice president within the University of Minnesota’s Academic Health Center, and she is the director of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, a public-private partnership and cooperative agreement with the Health Resources and Services Administration, established in 2012 .

In her leadership roles, Dr. Brandt has served as a consultant, advisor and speaker for a wide variety of organizations such as the Institute of Medicine, the National Quality Forum, the Academy of Healthcare Improvement, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the American Medical Association. Dr. Brandt holds a Bachelor of Arts in the teaching of history from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy in continuing education (specializing in continuing professional education for the health professions) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2013 she was recognized as a University of Illinois Distinguished Alumna. She completed W.K. Kellogg Foundation-sponsored post-doctoral fellowship for faculty in adult and continuing education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Gawlinski Research Scholar

Daniel Weberg, PhD, MHI, RN

Dr. Daniel Weberg is a nurse leader and expert in human-centered patient design and simulation and healthcare innovation with extensive clinical experience in the emergency department, acute in-patient hospital settings, and academia over the past 12 years. He is the senior director of innovation and leadership for the National Patient Care Services team. He is also a core team member for technology and inter-professional curriculum for the new Kaiser Permanente (KP) School of Medicine, and an advisor to the KP Ventures team. Dr. Weberg has held a variety of leadership roles, including nursing director, clinical faculty director, consultant, and direct care, in emergency departments, academic medical centers, large colleges of nursing, and private educational firms. He has extensive experience developing healthcare technology strategy, collaborating with executive sponsors and key stakeholder groups, and doing ground up collaboration with frontline care delivery teams. He is an expert in leading and influencing teams at unit level, hospital-wide, and across health systems to sustain innovative technology, informatics and education change initiatives.

Dr. Weberg earned his Bachelor of Science in nursing, and was in the first cohort to graduate from the Master of Healthcare Innovation at Arizona State University (ASU). He was also the first ever graduate of the Doctor of Philosophy in healthcare innovation Leadership at ASU. Dr. Weberg’s clinical background is in Emergency and Trauma nursing at level 1 trauma centers in California and Arizona. He is also faculty at The Ohio State University College of Nursing and taught previously at Arizona State University in the subject of Innovation, and Leadership. He just authored a first of its kind book titled “Evidence Based Innovation Leadership for Health Professions,” which describes the leadership and collaboration skills needed to lead the future of healthcare delivery.

Speakers, Presenters & Moderators

Lianna Z. Ansryan, MSN, RN-BC, CNS is a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and board certified in

Gerontological Nursing at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center. She is a CNS in Nursing Research and

Co-Investigator and lead on a grant funded multi-site research at Cedars-Sinai. She is

responsible for program management and working closely with the collaborating sites to develop, train, implement and evaluate the SAFE Care program.

Harriet Udin Aronow, PhD has a doctorate in applied social psychology and a 40-year career in health services research. Currently she is Research Scientist in Nursing at Cedars-Sinai

Medical Center. Her work is interprofessional, team-based, and focused on community-based

preventive health, health services for vulnerable populations, and nursing outcomes and

quality improvement.

Raquel Branom, DNP, RN, ACNS-BC is a Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist in adult health at

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Branom has spoken nationally on topics related to care of the hospitalized surgical patient. Her research interests include patient centered care

and elevating the standard of professional nursing practice.

Brenda Bursch, PhD, MA has been on faculty since 1994. Dr. Bursch is a Professor in

Psychiatry and in Pediatrics at UCLA and Clinical Director of the Psychiatry Consultation Liaison

service for Mattel Children’s Hospital. For the past year and a half, she has been developing

programs to support the mental wellness of UCLA health professionals.

Katrina dela Cruz, MSW, ASW earned her MSW from the University of Southern California in

2011. She has worked in multiple major hospitals in LA and NYC and is proud to currently be a

part of the adult inpatient medicine interdisciplinary team at UCLA.

Anahat Dhillon, MD is an anesthesia intensivist working mostly in the surgical intensive care

units and doing liver transplant anesthesia. Dr. Dhillon has been at UCLA as an attending for 9 years. She started working in collaborative quality projects 5 years ago and is passionate about

improving the care of patients through the continuum of their disease by working in

multidisciplinary teams.

Lynn Doering, PhD, FAAN is the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs and professor at UCLA School of Nursing. Dr. Doering developed a research program to evaluate the

physiologic and psychosocial adaptation of high-risk patients with cardiac disease. Dr. Doering

has also been instrumental in the success of the UCLA Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.

Karen Grimley, PhD, MBA, RN, FACHE is the Chief Nursing Executive for UCLA Health and

Assistant Dean in the UCLA School of Nursing. She is responsible for the overall delivery and management of nursing professional practice, care delivery methods, education, professional

development, research, administration and clinical services.

Betty Halvorson, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, MMGT is an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist with

special interest in Geriatrics and Health Care Improvement of this population. Hailing from

North Dakota and recruited to Torrance Memorial Medical Center in 2011 for her first CNS role, she has been a primary fan of bedside nursing practice for the majority of the past 43 years.

Kimberly Holden Shakur, PharmD, BCPS is the supervisor of the 7th floor pharmacy satellite at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. She provides clinical pharmacy services to inpatients

focusing on the cardiac ICU and CCU. Dr. Shakur precepts PGY1 residents in their internal

medicine rotation and CCU rotation.

Stephanie Jackson, MSN, RN, AOCNS, BMTCN is a nationally board certified Clinical Nurse

Specialist for the inpatient and outpatient hematology/ stem cell transplantation units at

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Ms. Jackson is the chair-elect of the UCLA Health

Nursing Practice Research Council. She is past president and president-elect of the Greater

Los Angeles chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society.

Jillian Kenney, BSN, RN, OCN is a staff nurse with the Solid Oncology Program at UCLA

Medical Center Santa Monica. She was a co-investigator for a research project examining the

use of technology to combat compassion fatigue; which was presented as a podium presentation at the 2015 Oncology Nursing Society Congress in Orlando, and was accepted for

publication for the winter edition of the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing.

Fotine Mamais, MSN, RN, GNP, GCNS is a Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist at Ronald Reagan

UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles California. She is originally from Toronto Canada and has been working at UCLA for 14 years. Her passion for Geriatric Patients has been instrumental in

helping to establish nursing infrastructure for Geriatric Services at Ronald Reagan UCLA

Medical Center.

Daniel Nadeau, MSN, RN, CNOR, CNL is a Clinical Nurse Educator at the UCLA Ambulatory

Surgery Center in Westwood, and Vice President of the STTI Gamma Tau-at-Large Chapter. His

professional interests include nursing informatics and implementation of evidence-based protocols in the operating room.

Pamela Nye, MS, RN, CNRN, SCRN, CNS is the clinical nurse specialist for neuroscience and

stroke coordinator at UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica in the departments of neurosugery,

general neurology and stroke. She is an assistant professor with the UCLA School of Nursing nurse practitioner program. Her research interest explores the impact of current or remote

alcohol use on increased in-patient fall rates due to the behavioral characteristic of impulsivity.

Nestor-Neil Peig, MSN, RN, PCCN, AGCNS-BC is an Adult/Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist. He

works at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center as the SAFE Care Collaborative site coordinator and the NICHE program coordinator. He is passionate about improving the care of the older

adult patient population.

Betsy Schoeni, MSN, RN, CNS is a Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist at Huntington

Hospital. Ms. Schoeni provides CNS oversight and is the Clinical Coordinator for the SAFE Care Program. She is currently in the process of implementing the NICHE program in 2018.

Julie Marie Sorg, MSN, RN is currently the Director of Research for the Cardiac Arrhythmia

Center at UCLA Health. Her clinical and research experience includes work in the UCLA Cardiothoracic Unit and the Ahmanson UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center. She has project

management experience as the Co-Director of the UCLA Magnet Recognition Program and as

an Application Manager for UCLA's electronic health record, overseeing research.

Cromwell Suarez, MSN, RN is the Clinical Surveillance Team Manager at UCLA Health, prior to

this position, he served as an ICU Nurse and Nurse Informaticist. Mr. Cromwell’s passion for

nursing and its interdisciplinary links to technology underscore his ambition for innovation, and

his ability to lead programs in the field, resulting in improved patient outcomes.

Sangyoung Yu-Choi, MSN, RN, PCCN is the Assistant Unit Director in 5MN at UCLA Medical

Center Santa Monica. During her 20 years of employment, she has developed a new graduate

orientation curriculum, a unit-based preceptor workshop program, and various continuing education programs for the unit. The UCLA Research and EBP conferences tremendously

influenced her evidence-based practice pursuits.
