LONDON, 18 Oct— If theworld beyond America’sshores had a say, it seemsclear that Barack Obamawould win the presidentialelection by something ap-proaching a landslide.

That is the key findingof a coordinated series ofnewspaper polls conductedin eight countries and pub-lished Friday in Britain’sGuardian and other papers.

It is no surprise Obama,

the Democratic nominee, ispopular in Europe — thatwas clear when he drewtumultuous crowds to hisopen-air speech in Berlinthis summer — but thescope of the lead suggestedby the polls is startling.

In Switzerland, for ex-ample, Obama has 83 per-

No sign of engine trouble before fatal crashCHICAGO, 18 Oct – A helicopter trans-

porting a sick toddler did not appear tohave engine problems before it struck aradio tower wire and crashed, killing allfour people aboard, a federal investiga-tor said Friday.

“We can’t rule it (engine problems)out but certainly radar data showing he’sin level flight is a strong indicator thatthere wasn’t,” said National Transpor-tation Safety Board investigator JohnBrannen.

Nothing found in the wreckage of thecrash in the Chicago suburb of Auroralate Wednesday suggests a mechanicalfailure, either, he said.

Brannen also said NTSB officialshave listened to recordings of the pilot’scommunications with an air traffic con-trol tower in DuPage County and they

have not reported there were any distresscalls before the crash late Wednesday.

“All the information is that commu-nications were businesslike,” he said, adding that the helicopter was notequipped with any of the recorders thatmight have been able to shed more lighton what was going on in the cockpit justbefore the crash.

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Sunday, 19 October, 2008 7

Dr Khin Maung Nyunt

Myanmar traditional dramatic performancemostly chooses its story from Jatakas or Buddha’sbirth stories. There are 550 minor jatakas and tenmajor jatakas of ten penultimate lives of the Buddha. These ten major jatakas tell the stories of the fulfill-ment by Bodhisatta (future Buddha) of one or two often kinds of perfection —(1) resolution (2) effort (3)truthfulness and loving kindness (4) renunciation (5)wisdom (6)morality and forbearance (7) truthfulnessand resolution (8) wisdom and truthfulness (9)wisdomand equanimity and (10) giving. Ten major jatakasare (1) Teymi (2) Maha Janaka (3) Suvannasama (4)Neymi (5) Mahaw Thada (6) Buridat (7) SandaKumara (8) Narada (9) Vidura and (10) Vessandararespectively.

For the dramatic performance competitions ofthe 16th Myanmar Traditional Cultural PerformingArts Competitions at Nay Pyi Taw in October 2008,Buridat Jataka has been chosen. It is the story ofBodhisatta’s fulfillment of perfection in morality andforbearance.

While the living Gotama Buddha was residingat Jetavana Vihara monastery in Savatthi he told tothe lay devotees who were keeping sabbath there,Buridat Jataka in 298 gathas (Pali stanzas) the synopsisof the story is as follows:-

Buridat, Naga serpent king approached a quietplace near the Yamonna River by the city Baranathifor keeping sabbath and observing moral precepts .There appeared a hunter named Naythada and his sonwho were chasing a deer. When they met Buridat bychance the latter was worried in case the hunterwould inform a snake charmer to catch him. SoBuridat sent them to his kingdom to enjoy life there. But as they were not happy there, Buridat returnedthem home, presenting the hunter a ruby which hadthe power of fulfilling any wish. The hunter declinedto accept it as he had said that he would become amonk.

There was a hermit who received from a garuda(mythical bird that preys on all reptiles) a mantrawhich could frighten and subdue naga serpents. Thehermit gave the mantra to a Brahman who decided tobecome a snake charmer. When he arrived at theYamonna River he saw naga serpent ladies revellingin the River, leaving the ruby on the bank. TheBrahman chantted the mantra. Naga serpent ladieswere frightend and they fled. The Brahman took theruby. When Naythada and son saw the ruby in thBrahman’s hand, Nyathada coveted it. He offered tobuy the ruby with 100 viss of gold. But the Brahmanresfused to sell it. So Naythada said to the Brahmanthat he would show where Buridat the naga serpentwas, if the Brahman gave him the ruby. The son toldthe father that he was a traitor and left to become ahermit in Himalayan forest. Naythada took theBrabesman to Buridat who was in deep meditation.Though Buridat knew that he was in danger he did notwant his sabbath and meditation disturbed. Withstrong will and forbearance Buridat yielded to theBrahmans who persecuted Buridat and put him in abamboo trap. Naythada got the ruby as a reward andwent away. Brahman the snake charmer went about, place to place, city to city, showing Buridat, Hebecame a wealthy snake charmer.

Buridat’s mother Samudaza had a bad dream andshe became much worried about her son Buridat whohad gone to human kingdom for keeping Sabbath andobservance of moral precepts. When her other sonscame to her for monthy homage to her she told themabout her bad dream and made them look for theirbrother Buridat. Older son Sudassana sent youngerbrother Subawga to Himalayan Forest to look for Buridat.Youngest brother Kanarika was sent to Tavatimsa thecelestial Kingdom. Sudasana assumed as a hermit andwent to human Kingdom. With him was his cousin sisterAzamukhi who assumed as a small frog.

Brahman the snake charmer was staging a show

at the palace of Baranathi King Sugara Brahmadatwho was the brother of Sumudaza. So he was Buridat’sunclce. Sudassana and the cousin sister, searchingfor Buridat, arrived at the palace. When Brahman thesnake charmer pulled out Buridat from the bamboobasket trap to display its antics, Buridat saw hisbrother and sister and he wept. He went straight toSudasana and put his head on the foot of Sudasanaand the two brothers wept. All spectators werefrightened and fled.

Brahman the snake charmer thought that thehermit [Sudassana] was bitten by Buridat, and rushedto the hermit to chant matra to cure the bite. But thehermit [Sudassana] told Brahman the snake charmerthat there was no better qualified snake charmer thanhe himself. Thus the two were drawn into thecompetition of their snake charming arts. With thehelp of cousin sister as a small frog, the hermit(Sudassana) displayed supernatural powers. Brahmanthe snake charmer was defeated and he suddenlycaught leprosy. He set Buridat free.

Buridat, Sudassana and Azamukhi revealedthe identities. King of Baranathi then knew that theywere his nephews and niece. They made appointmentto go to their grandfather, former King of Baranathiwho was then a hermit in Himalayan Forest.

Subawga who came into Himalayan Forest tosearch for Buridat met Naythada. He brought him toNaga Kingdom to punish him. The guard at thesleeping chamber of Buridat was Brahman in hisprevious existence. He told Subawga and his men notto kill Naythada because Brahmans were descendantsof Brahma the great diety. Besides Brahmans madesacrificial rites for the welfare of all. Upon hearingwhat he said, Buridat preached true Dhamma, sayingthat sacrifices were evil practices of the infidels. Alllistened to Buridat’s Dhamma teachings. Naythadawas expelled.

The story ended with a happy reunion ofBuridat and all his relatives at the homage ceremonyat the hermitage of their grandfather, former BaranathiKing who then was a hermit for life.

In winding up the narration Buddha revealedthe identities of the major characters in the story.Naythada was Devadat, Buddha’s opponent.Sawmudatt was Ananda, Azamukhi was TheriUppalawun, Sudassana was Shin Sariputra, Subawgawas Shin Moggallan, Kanaritha was Sunet Khat andBuridat was Gotama Buddha.

The agriculturesector fulfills the re-quirements of the peo-ple in basic needs. Assuch, emphasis is beingplaced on uplift of theagriculture sector at fullcapacity. Progress hasbeen achieved in the sec-tor yearly since 1988.

Paddy is staplefood of the country. In1988-89, 11.80 millionacres of land were putunder paddy and 617.78million baskets of paddycould be produced. In2006-07, a total of 1,482million baskets of paddy

ATHENS,18 Oct — In the past two anda half thousand years, the temples of theAcropolis have suffered fire, bombingand earthquake. Now, scientists aretrying to save them from a new modernenemy: pollution.

Standing on a hilltop at the centre ofAthens, a city of 4 million people, theAcropolis’ elaborately sculptured stoneshave fallen prey to a film of black crustfrom car exhaust fumes, industrialpollution, acid rain and fires.

A team of Greek engineers andrestorers are using an innovative lasertechnology system to clean the surfaceof the ancient monuments, uncoveringcolours and ornamentation hidden fordecades.

“It is very serious,” said MariaIoannidou, director of the AcropolisRestoration Service, of the pollution. “Itdestroys sculptural, structural andpainting details. One of our aims is toregain these cultural details using newtechnology.”For years the team tested40 different methods, including

mechanical and chemical processes, tofind the safest solutions to restore thewhite of the marbles without losing detail.

The winner was the brainchild ofCrete’s Foundation for Research andTechnology, which created a system thatuses two laser beams of infrared andultraviolet rays simultaneously.

LOS ANGELES, 18 Oct — A smallNASA spacecraft embarks on a two-year mission this weekend to givescientists their first view of the

study a chaotic region in space where thesolar wind from the sun clashes with coldgases from interstellar space.

The solar wind, a stream of chargedparticles spewing from the sun at 1 millionmiles per hour, carves out a protectivebubble around the solar system. Thisbubble known as the heliosphere shieldsagainst most dangerous cosmic radiationthat would otherwise interfere withhuman spaceflight.

Scientists recently discovered that thesolar wind pressure is at its weakest levelin 50 years, although the exact reasonremains a mystery. Ibex could helpconfirm whether the heliosphere isshrinking.

Observations from Ibex should helpresearchers in “unlocking the secrets ofthis important interaction between thesun and the galaxy,” said DavidMcComas of the Southwest ResearchInstitute in San Antonio. He is chiefscientist for the $165 million mission.
