START THE TRANSITION TO ISO 45001

Organizations are responsible for the health and safety of their employees and persons working under its control.

For this reason the company concerned must provide a safe and healthy workplace, limiting incidents and accidents, work-related injuries and ill-health as well as continually improving OH&S performance.

ISO 45001 is intended to help organizations, regardless of size or type in designing systems to pro-actively prevent injury and ill health. All of its requirements are designed to be integrated into the organization’s management processes.

ISO DIS.2 45001 has been prepared using the 'High-Level Structure”. This is intended to enhance alignment among ISO’s management system standards, and to facilitate the implementation for organizations than need to meet the requirements of several standards simultaneously, for example the already released ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.

UNIFYING AND AGREED HIGH LEVEL STRUCTURE

The 'High Level Structure” (HLS) is a standardized format for ISO management system standards. It is defined in Appendix SL of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. All new management system standards will follow it common, consistent core:

A common general structure (table of contents): identical chapters, article numbers, and chapter, article or clause titles, etc.

Common terms and core definitions

The characteristics and requirements specific to each standard are inserted into this structure in the appropriate chapters. This standardization aims to foster compatibility among various management system standards to facilitate their integration and implementation by certified organizations.

From an internal viewpoint, ISO also seeks to ensure quality in the production of its own standards: consistent texts that remain applicable to organizations of all sizes, in all sectors and operating in any culture. The HLS provides a framework that ensures a system output from the heavy and complex ISO standard development process. Which involves a large number of di�erent committees and intervening parties. Lastly, guarantee that the standards produced will not be overly prescriptive.

These standards must provide organizations the flexibility to di�erentiate themselves and support competition, while preserving each organization’s ability to improve their management systems above and beyond requirements of the standard. The first standard drafted in compliance with the HLS was ISO 22301 - Business Continuity Management Systems.
