To the Most Reverend Archbishops andBishops, Reverend Priests and Hieromonks,
Venerable Monks and Nuns,Beloved in Christ Lay People of theUkrainian Greek Catholic Church
Christ is risen!
This is the day of Resurrection. Be illumined, O people!Pascha, the Pascha of the Lord. From death unto life;and from earth unto heaven. O Christ, our God, has ledus, as we sing a hymn of victory.
Resurrection Matins, Paschal Canon
Today, on the bright Feastday of the Resurrec-tion of Christ, the Church glorifies her Savior, Who rosefrom the dead, with these words from the Paschal Canon.
Just as in the past, on the first day of the creation of the
world, today out of the darkness of the tomb, which iscertainly the darkness of nothingness, despair and hope-lessness, the divine and unmade light of life has shined.
This is the day of Resurrection. Be illumined, O peo-
ple! This divine light, radiating from the torn andwounded yet resurrected body of Jesus, permeates all ofus today, penetrates our personal darkness of sin, weak-ness, hopelessness and despondency and enlightens, enli-
vens and raisesit opens the door to a new life.
The Pascha of the Lord, which we celebrate to-
day, is an invitation of the risen Christ to follow Himfrom death into life. Today, He, like the new Moses, iscalling us to leave behind the slavery of Egypt as well asthe service of everything that takes away from us the
dignity of being Gods children. The Servant of God,
Pope John Paul II, whose solemn rite of the admittanceto the ranks of the Blessed Beatificationis to be heldon the first of May of this year, has called this modernslavery a culture of death, that is, a set of rules of mod-
ern society that promotes violence against the unbornand the sick, that spreads contempt towards the Christianfamily and morals, that takes away our freedom as Gods
children and forces us to grovel before a variety ofearthly idols and contemporary celebrities.
This year, celebrating the tenth anniversary ofthe pastoral visit of this holy man to Ukraine, let us re-
call his motto: Christ the way, the truth and the life!as well as his paternal words, with which he instructed uson the path of life, recorded in Gods Ten Command-
ments. The Pascha of the Lord is a pilgrimage along this
path; it is the beginning of a journey from earth toheaven. And this journey is fulfilled through the power
of God, Who has conquered today that which is mopowerful in this world - death itself. From death unt
life; and from earth unto heaven. O Christ, our God, haled us. Let us not stand to the side of this divine pathlet us not allow ourselves to be diverted to the sideline
of life by shallow allurements, because, only by walkinin this Paschal procession, will we proceed, as a unite
People of God, with our Savior from earth to heaven.Beloved in Christ, sons and daughters of th
Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church! On this radiant day
on the road to meet the risen Christ, we do not walk slentlywe sing a hymn of victory! How important
is for our people that live on every continent and are times confused, dejected and despondent regarding the
inherent human dignity and strength, to sing today thsolemn Paschal hymn of victory! May its splendid wordecho from every Ukrainian heart, permeate every bod
and soul, and soar to heaven, for in the risen Savior is th power, endurance and victory of the Ukrainian spirThe Lord is my light and my salvation whom shallfear? sings Prophet David (Ps. 26:1).
May this Paschal song of victory reverberate to
day in our every home and family! Along with an Eastegg and blessed bread let us carry it today to the pooand the suffering, to prisoners and those broken by har
labor, to the sick and those who mourn and weep undthe burden of the crosses of daily life. May the power o
the Resurrected Savior, Who triumphantly rises from thsealed tomb today, be your light, your strength and you
song!
Christ is risen!

Hayivky are spring dances and folk songs celebrating Christ's Resurrection and the coming of springtime. .
Hayivky are ritual spring songs and dances that are performed on Easter Sunday. Young girls, usually unmar-ried, perform hayivky in front of the church or in the ceme-
tery. These group dances, songs, games, and dramaticscenes were believed to serve a magical function with the
aim of enticing Spring and chasing Winter away. Thesesongs and dances personified a funeral for frost and winter. They also imitated planting and growth of crops, and tried
to ensure a bountiful harvest through the magic of music, words, and body motion.
With these dances and songs the people attempted
to entice and enchant all the good spirits of the reawakened Nature so that it would bring them good luck and wealth.
Hayivky addressed various subjects, one form of hayivkyspeak about the beauty and industriousness of young maid-ens, since Spring is a time when love blossoms.
During the Hayivky, each participant had the op-
portunity to gossip about their husbands and talk about theupcoming spring harvest. In Christian times, not only do these songs signal
the reawakening of nature, they glorify the Resurrection ofChrist. For three days we thought He was dead, as in thewinter appeared to kill everything in sight, but now He hascome back in glory, signaling the coming of the Summer. We thank Him as the celebration of His Resurrection sig-
nals the beginning of the harvest that sustains us throughoutthe year.

CHRIST IS RISEN! INDEED, HE ISRISEN!
Bright Week, This is a week of joy. Christ hasdestroyed the kingdom of death and the power of evil, andhas established the Kingdom of God. Death no longer
reigns over human life. Paradise is re-opened to all and thisis symbolized by all the doors of the Iconostasis remainingopen throughout this week. Through the power of the HolySpirit, all of humankind and the entire cosmos are renewed. In an ancient tradition, the newly baptized, having entered
into a new life in the hope of resurrection, wore whitegarments of joy for the whole week. We do not chant theusual prayers for the departed during this week, for Christhas destroyed the power of death. There is no fasting thisweek. (Typicon, 2011)
Each year at Easter, I face the same question: howto approach the meaning of the Easter experience and its
meaning in my own life. Jesus is the cornerstone and theheart of our religion and faith. The presence of the RisenLord stands and abides among us. This is the essence, the
source, the whole meaning of our faith and hope. Alwayswe stand in the presence of the Risen Jesus. We are calledto stand in His presence in prayer throughout the whole
year, and especially during this Easter season.YOU HAVE FILLED ALL THINGS WITH JOY!
Although You descended into the grave, OImmortal One, yet You destroyed the power of the Abyss,
and You arose as Victor, O Christ God, calling out to the
Myrrh-Bearing Women: Rejoice and giving peace Your Apostles, O You Who did grant resurrection to thfallen. (Kontakion for Easter)
The icon depicted aboveis titled The descent in
the Abyss. Jesus descent into the abode of the holy an just departed of the Old Testament is one of the themes
Holy Saturday and Easter, During this Easter season wsing: You descended into the abyss of the earth, O Chris
You have broken down the eternal doors which imprisonethose who were bound, and, like Jonah after three days inwhale, You have risen from the tomb.
The action in the icon takes place in the verdepths of the earth, shown in the background as a blacgaping circle. In the center, standing out sharply in brillia
white, is the Savior. He appears as Conqueror anDeliverer. He is the Master of Life; He is surrounded by
brilliant halo, symbol of glory. The darkness of the Abyis being filled with the light of divine rays. They are thrays and dawn of early Easter morning. We see Jesutrampling underfoot the two crossed doors of death an
hell. With His right hand Christ raises up Adam from thgrave and with His left had he grasps the hand of ouancestress. Old testament saints surround Him.
Jesus, by freeing the old Adam and the whole omankind, has laid the foundation of a new life for thoswho are united with Him. This icon is a prefigure our ow
resurrection from the grave.O Christ, at You Resurrection, death
swallowed up in victory. We glorify You Passion ancelebrate it with joy, we cry out:The Lord hrisen! (Kontakion of Easter)

"...the Cross, the Tomb, the Resurrection on the third day,
the Ascension unto heaven, the Sitting at the Right Hand, and the second and glorious Coming.
Dear Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Lord Jesus Christ, now gloriously risen, sitsenthroned in heaven at the Right Hand of the Father. His
glorified human Body will thus remain invisible to us untilHis return at the end of time. In the mean time, we are notleft without visible reminders of Christ's promise to be withus until the end of the world.
In Kyiv, there rises on the flats a monumental patri-
archal cathedral dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ - agrand edifice which witnesses to the power of Christ to
overcome the powers of death. At the corner of OakleyBoulevard and Rice Street, there rises another great church- this one a testament to the faith brought to these shores
over a century ago. In every church
building within the eparchy, there stands a tabernacle wheChrist is present in the Eucharist; there He waits to be take
by clergy to those who cannot come to church to receiHim.
Like doubting Thomas, many remain unconvince
of Christ's presence until they recognize Him in the fles
For this reason, our flesh needs to be the board upon whicHis icon is written, our lives need to be convincing portrayals of the Gospel, which we claim as our guide. This Christ's desire, one that makes even Him wonder, "Whe
the Son of Man returns, will He find faith on the earth(Luke 18: 8) The answer depends upon us; let us not disap
point Him! As we sing at Resurrection matins, "Let Goarise" - in us!
Faithfully in the risen Christ,
