are always asking us what colors we use to paint our cars," says Dave Smith, president of Factory FiveRacing. "Since our exclusive paint shop, Carl's Collision, exclusively uses SherwinWilliams AutomotiveFinishes, we looked to both of them to create a limited custom line of paints featuring the most popularcolors used on our favorite kit cars."
Selecting proper colors is the number one confusion when it comes to our hot rod customers' concerns,"says Carl Garcia, president of Carl's Collision in Fall River, Mass. located in close proximity to FactoryFive. "They have hundreds and hundreds of colors to choose from so I enjoyed the challenge of narrowingthe color palette down to the most popular colors to recommend to them."
Factory Five has always been at the forefront of the expansion and sophistication of the "kit car" marketfirst establishing itself with its replica of the Cobra. Factory Five has taken kit cars to a new level byintegrating a high level of technology (i.e., CADCAM, robotics and laser cutting) into their domestic designand manufacturing process. It sells 1012 chassis a week, costing on average $10$20,000 each, frombestselling MK4 Roadsters to '33 Cobras to Type 65 Daytona Coupes.
Today, more people build Factory Five Racing roadster replicas than all other replica manufacturersanywhere in the world combined. Its cars have won more car show awards, battled for more racing wins,received more accolades and recognition from the press, and most importantly, garnered more loyalcustomers than any replica manufacturer ever.
A highend shop about an hour south of Boston, Carl's Collision not only performs auto collision repair andpainting but also trains auto body technicians at its inhouse facility. Garcia has been using SherwinWilliams paint exclusively at his shop for many years, spraying over 100 cars per week.
To Factory Five, Carl's Collision is the one it can trust with its characteristic fiberglass and seams on itschassis. It also recognizes Garcia as a leading mind when it comes to business ownership of auto bodyshops on the cuttingedge of facility operations.
For more than a year, Smith and Garcia were talking about putting together a selective line of paint colorsfor the Factory Five kits. Once they pulled SherwinWilliams Automotive Finishes marketing director SteveSpirko into the conversation, it took about two years to debut the colors at the 2014 SEMA show. FactoryFive built ten demo cars to hold all the paint colors. Garcia committed personally to performing all thespray outs.
"Initially, I thought it would take a few months to get these colors together," says Smith. "But it was all worthit because there's a great story behind each one of those colors."
No one knows better than Garcia about the stories behind each one of the colors. "Take the blues forexample", he says. "One blue had to be bright like the New England Patriots. Another had to hold true to aclassic royal navy. Yet another had to represent a pale vintage color. And another had to be a shade awayfrom true black. In the end, we nailed it."
"To have access to the biggest name in kit cars with Factory Five is a great promotion for us," says Spirko.
