But what is a scar exactly? “A scar is a growth of collagen that forms as a natural part of the healing process following injury to the skin, which can occur through trauma, such as falling off a motorbike, surgery, burns or skin diseases such as acne,” explains Dr Catherine Reid, honorary secretary of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. ere are a few factors that determine the severity of a scar, including the size and location of the wound, and the age, gender and ethnicity of the patient, explains Dr Reid. e good news is most scars will heal and fade over time. While there are a few treatment options available, the methods are never guaranteed, but they will help minimise the appearance of a scar. LOTIONS AND POTIONS Some oils and creams are believed to reduce the appearance of scarring, and they can help keep skin nourished. ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT COLDS AND ‘FLUS

THIS WINTER?

Your immune system plays an important role in fighting off the viruses that cause colds and ‘flus. These viruses can hit at any time, but they commonly affect you in the winter months or during a change of season.

The Army Within

Essentially, the immune system is our body’s “Department of Defence”. The immune system fights off potentially harmful invaders by recognising and responding to them as a threat. When the immune system is functioning well, it acts like a powerful, well-regulated army. It consists of several highly specialised types of cells, much the same way an army is made up of many different specialty divisions.
