From our “showtime” to your uptime
CONEXPO-CON/AGG®, held March 7–11 in Las Vegas, once again lived up to our high expectations. As always, the largest construction equipment trade show in North America was well attended and a great opportunity to meet up with customers, both on and off the show floor. The event also gave us the opportunity to share how Deere gives you the power to do more, so you can RUN [YOUR] WORLD.
A big highlight for our customers was our interactive Machine Monitoring Center (MMC) display. Visitors to our exhibit learned how John Deere and our dealers are working together to deliver unprecedented levels of uptime. You can learn more about how we are enhancing machine-monitoring technologies and product support in the cover story starting on page 4. This is the future of our business.
Our big iron is always a big draw, and we had nearly 40 machines on display. This included our beefed-up lineup of heavy equipment, such as our new 950K Dozer, our 620G and 622G Motor Graders, and our 260E and 310E Articulated Dump Trucks. To mark the 50th anniversary of our graders, we displayed a restored 570 Motor Grader. We also showed off our latest customer-inspired compact machines: the new G-Series Skid Steers and Compact Track Loaders.
For the last 18 months, we’ve been focused on filling out and continuing to improve our equipment line to meet our customers’ needs. Now that our product line is even more complete, we’re excited to turn our focus from machine specs to you. Through efforts like the MMC and working with our dealers to refine machine-monitoring capabilities, we’re using technology to deliver enhanced solutions for increased productivity, uptime, and efficiency.
So you can do more than simply move earth. You can RUN [YOUR] WORLD.
Now that our product line is even more complete, we’re excited to turn our focus from machine specs to you.

takes machine monitoring to the
next level. Data collected from
thousands of connected John Deere
machines is analyzed by specialists
in order to identify trends that will
help improve the service, support,
and current and future design of
our machines.
“It’s all about delivering unprece-
dented levels of uptime to our
customers,” says Tim Worthington,
Manager, Product Support Services.
“Machine monitoring isn’t just about

maximum productivity while keeping operating costs
low. Because you have big jobs to finish, on schedule
and on budget.
We’re watching your fleet, so you can run your world. At
the local level, John Deere dealerships continue to refine
and bolster their remote-monitoring capability to track
the health of your machines in the field. This helps them
respond to critical issues more quickly and efficiently before
they can cause costly downtime.

MORE LOCAL SUPPORT
Dealers are on the front line of
monitoring customer machines
for potential issues. Most of our
construction machines come with
five years of JDLink™ machine telematics service. This gives our
dealers the capability to monitor
your fleet around the clock through their individual Machine
Monitoring Centers.
Response time is quick, so many
problems can be addressed before
they cause a major unplanned
downtime event. Remote diag-
nostics and programming enable
your dealer to read codes and record
performance data without even
having to make a trip to the jobsite.
And if a jobsite visit is warranted,
remote diagnostics can help the
technician show up with the right
parts the first time.
COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE
To support our dealer efforts,
we developed the MHMC and
debuted it at CONEXPO-CON/
AGG® with an impressive interactive
display of its capabilities. Located inside John Deere Dubuque Works,
where we design and build many
of our machines, the MHMC is
positioned strategically near our
engineering teams, product experts,
and assembly lines.
“Data coming off the machines may reveal an issue we can easily
fix on the assembly line,” says Worthington. “It also provides
information we can use to improve
current and future features on our
machines to provide more value to
our customers.”
By aggregating and analyzing data
from thousands of machines, the
MHMC can identify trends that
warrant a closer look. This helps
us identify problems that may not
surface on a local level and develop
new, improved maintenance and
repair protocols that the dealer
can leverage.
The MHMC will help us be more
able to predict downtime better
than ever before and give our
dealers a prescription for how to
avoid it. “Our dealers are closest to
the customer, but they are focused
on a finite number of machines,” says Worthington. “By looking at
the bigger picture, we can respond
to issues that are affecting a broader population of machines
much more quickly. And dealers
will be able to leverage insight they
wouldn’t have been able to obtain
on their own.”
Through the support of your local
John Deere dealer and the MHMC,
you’ll be able to more effectively reduce downtime. “It’s pretty
amazing, really,” says Worthington.
“This experience is something vastly
different than our customers have experienced before. We’re drawing
on the collective intelligence of
the entire machine population.
Ultimately, we’re here to really
focus on customers and keep
them up and running. So they
can run their world.”

At its 36 locations in North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina, James River Equipment (JRE) has worked hard to ensure its customers realize the maximum benefits of John Deere WorkSight™ — the exclusive suite of technology solutions that includes JDLink. The dealership’s seven tech-nology specialists work with approxi-mately 550 customers who use JDLink on nearly 3,800 machines.
Four of JRE’s dealership locations have a dedicated John Deere Work-Sight technology room featuring a large monitor. “We can sit down with a customer and walk them through JDLink,” says Billy Stonerock, JRE
WorkSight Solutions Consultant, Raleigh. “It’s a great way to show them how it works and how it can benefit them.”
JRE’s technology specialists handle hundreds of alerts per day, either contacting the customer directly or passing the information on to a service manager or field dispatcher. “If we see an alert related to low coolant, hydraulic fluid, and oil pres-sure, I’ll get on the phone with the customer to let them know what’s going on,” says Data Analyst Mike Posey. “They can notify the crew to see what the problem is, like a blown hydraulic line. Often, we’ll catch an
issue before it becomes a larger prob-lem or catastrophic failure.”
The team can also detect a problem using remote diagnostics and pro-gramming. “If we need boots on the ground, we’ll send the information over to the service department, and they’ll dispatch a service truck with the right part in hand,” says Technol-ogy Specialist Leo Wambold. “In the past we’d wait for the customer to call and send a technician to perform a diagnosis on site. The technician would have to return to the shop, get the part, and then return to the machine for the repair. Remote diagnosis can save hours of machine downtime.”

RANCH HANDS
To help complete a never-ending list of chores, the Millenkamps run 40 John Deere four-wheel- drive loaders, including 35 recently purchased 544Ks.
Ten of the new loaders are used for feeding, 15 for manure
and bedding, and the rest
for construction and other
miscellaneous tasks.
“I’ve been really happy with
John Deere equipment,” says Bill. “Deere was the first loader we bought, and we’ve never
had a reason to look anyplace else. We’re Deere people! We rarely have issues, and our dealer,
Coastline Equipment, stands
behind the equipment, providing
the service and support we need
to stay up and running. We have
100,000 animals to care for, and
we need our equipment to run
every day.”
We’re Deerepeople!

Idaho is known for its
“famous potatoes,” as it
says right on the state’s
license plate. But this is
cattle country, too. In fact,
Idaho is the third largest
milk-producing state in
the country.
Idaho provided the perfect location
for Bill and Susie Millenkamp to start their calf-raising operation 20 years ago. On a small line of credit,
the Millenkamps began with just a few dozen head on 40 acres.
Today, in addition to raising calves, the couple also operates a dairy
farm and feedlot. They manage around 100,000 head of livestock between the calf-raising facility,
the dairy, and the feedlot. That’s a lot of mouths to feed and
housing to clean and bed.
Millenkamp Cattle’s state-of-the-art milking facility is one of the most technologically
advanced in the country.

12 THE DIRT
To keep tabs on the fleet of new 544Ks, Millenkamp uses JDLink machine monitoring. “We can
access machine hours and location,
and get machine-health alerts. This allows us to quickly diagnose an issue with a piece of equipment
and address it before it becomes
a major problem. This saves time and money on extra service calls.”
HARDEST JOB IN THE WORLD
Bill was born and raised in eastern
Iowa, where his dad was a dairy-
cattle dealer. After high school,
Bill moved to Klamath Falls,
Oregon, and went to work for the DeJongs, a well-known Dutch dairy family. It was there he
met Susie. After the couple got
married, they looked for a place to start their calf-raising operation,
including California, Washington,
and Idaho. “At the time, Tulare, California, was booming. But we
liked Idaho the best. I liked the hunting and fishing, and we both liked the lifestyle Idaho has to offer.”
The Millenkamps raise calves for approximately 40 local dairies.
New calves as young as one-day-
old arrive daily, and they stay up
to seven months. The work is incredibly labor intensive. Calves
must be kept comfortable, well fed, and free from sickness. Bottle feeding alone requires the help
of 150 workers who hand-deliver thousands of bottles to the calves
several times a day. And each
bottle must be cleaned.
“Raising calves is one of the most
difficult jobs in the cattle industry,” says Bill. “It’s kind of like a daycare center. We keep everything metic-ulously clean and do everything
we can to keep all the livestock comfortable and healthy. We’re
really good at what we do, and
that’s why we’ve grown over
the years.”
JERSEY GIRLS
The Millenkamps’ dairy farm, also known as Idaho Jersey Girls, is in Malta, which is about 80 miles
east of Jerome.
Most of the dairy cows are Jerseys,
which produce a higher content of
fat and protein that is highly valued
by the dairy’s customers, such as
Glanbia, a major cheese producer.
Currently Glanbia is picking up a tanker of milk from Idaho Jersey Girls every two hours.
The Millenkamps’ state-of-the-art facility is one of the most
technologically advanced milking centers in the country. It features
two 106-stall rotary parlors under one roof. Thousands of cows are milked there daily.
FANUC Robots keep the cows sanitized at the Millenkamps’ state-of-the-art dairy farm.

Many of the facility’s systems are
monitored and controlled by the
management team via sensors
and Programmable Logic Control
(PLC) technology. This gives them the ability to monitor, troubleshoot,
and control the lighting, ventilation,
cooling, hot water, foot baths, and
surveillance cameras, either on site
or remotely.
A unique feature of the milking center is the incorporation of
robots. FANUC Robots from
Green Source Automation LLC
perform the pre-milking sanitation and stimulation steps as well as the
post-milking application of a teat sanitizer. Millenkamp says, “Cows thrive on comfort, cleanliness, and
consistency, and that is what this
milking center and its employees deliver 24/7.” Millenkamp Cattle LLC is serviced by
Coastline Equipment, Jerome, Idaho.
When he was a boy,
Bill Millenkamp attended
a Gold Key event with his father. Decades later, Millenkamp brought
his father, Tom, and his eight-year-old son, Johnny, to a recent Gold Key event at John Deere
Davenport Works. After being flown in courtesy of his dealer, Coastline Equipment, Millenkamp took a factory tour and was presented with a Gold Key at the end of the assembly line for one of his 35 new Deere 544K Loaders.
“ We had a great time touring the plant. From the time you show up until
the time you leave, there is just a very strong sense of pride. Everyone is just very passionate about their job, from the people who work on the line to the plant manager. It’s a very impressive operation.”

At John Deere, anniversaries are always significant events. So when the calendar turned to 2017, we were excited for another celebration to get underway. In case you haven’t heard, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the JD570, Deere’s first “official” entry into the motor grader market.
The JD570 holds a special place in our company’s history. It was produced in our Moline factory from 1967–70. And prominent among its many features were front-wheel and articulated-frame steering — industry-first innovations that provided the foundation for what our motor grader line has evolved into today.
To help us commemorate the JD570 Motor Grader’s debut, we went in search of an original machine. With help from our dealer network, we eventually found one, but it had clearly seen better days. So we enlisted two of Deere’s very own — Dubuque Works retirees Don Bagby and Jerry Bode — to restore it to its original glory.
After approximately 2,200 hours spent meticulously bringing the machine back to life,
Don and Jerry turned it over to us — and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results. When all was said and done, the two men sat down with us to reflect on the experience.
Here’s what they had to say:
So how did you guys get involved with the JD570 restoration project?
Jerry: One day, I ran into a friend and former co-worker of mine who still works at John Deere Dubuque Works. He knows I’ve restored some big machines over the years. So he asked if I’d be interested in working with Deere to restore a 570 Motor Grader. And I said yes — but only if I could work with Don (laughing).
How did it end up being this particular machine?
Don: Deere sent out a notice to all its dealers that the company was looking for a 570 to restore. They located one in western
Nebraska, and boy, was it in rough condition. When we first looked at it, we didn’t know how or where we’d start. But we knew we wanted to work on it.
How did Deere aid you in the restoration process?
Don: From the very beginning we worked with Greg Swift at Dubuque Works. He was the liaison between the Deere factory and us. If we needed something or ran into an issue, the first thing we did was contact Greg. We were always calling to have him check the PDC (Parts Distribution Center) for the availability and cost of parts.
Jerry: We also had a good relationship with Martin Equipment, a local Deere dealer in Dubuque, Iowa. They were always willing to help. When we were looking for a part that was no longer available from the PDC, Martin Equipment would check to see if it might be in another dealer’s inventory.
Was it hard to find original parts?
Don: A lot of the parts we wanted weren’t available. And some of the parts that were available were too expensive. In those cases, we improvised. For example, we completely rebuilt the steering column using fiberglass.

We couldn’t get a new engine hood, so we repaired that on our own. And we completely rebuilt all the wiring harnesses…28 wires, one wire at a time, with correct color codes, connectors, and not one blown fuse!
Were the original JD570 schematics helpful?
Jerry: No — we didn’t have them (laughing). We took this 570 all the way down to the bare frame and rebuilt it with little more than an old service manual to guide us. We had PDFs of the original parts book and operator manual, too. From those we were able to replicate and piece things together as they were originally. Plus, we documented every disassembly step with pictures so we could see how everything went back together — we had over 700 pictures in all.
Was there a part of the process that proved more challenging than anticipated?
Jerry: Everything we worked on was taken down to bare metal for priming and repainting. We were dealing with 10-plus gallons of
code-correct John Deere construction yellow (TY25678) paint. To ensure even coloration, we mixed each individual gallon, combined them in a large container, mixed it all again, and transferred it back into the original gallon paint cans. It was a lot of work, but it’s small price to pay for a good paint job (smiling).
Don: On the other hand, what we thought was going to be a big problem turned out to be a fairly easy issue. The 570 featured the four-legged stag Deere logo decal on the fuel tank. But that decal isn’t available through Deere anymore. We weren’t going to settle for an inauthentic detail — especially one that important. So we contacted the original decal supplier and arranged for a high-quality reproduction.
Is there anything about the finished product that makes you particularly proud?
Don: No detail was too small. Everything on this machine works as it should — and we’re really proud of that. For example, the original cab defroster fan included a light that indicated fan speed. It didn’t do anything when we got it. But now it works like new (smiling).

Any given day at Saloom Properties
of Evergreen, Alabama, includes
many tasks and challenges, from
building and maintaining roads
and fire lanes, to moving logs and clearing land. For the really big jobs,
Saloom seeks help from neighbors,
consulting foresters, and friends.
But he and his family do nearly all
the day-to-day work themselves.
“You’re talking to my workforce,”
he says, laughing. “I like to say
that I do 99 percent of the work
on this farm — 100 percent of the
time. But the truth is that nothing
would get done without my wife.”
Experience taught Saloom that a
company is only as productive as
the equipment it uses. And when
it comes to keeping his operation
moving forward, he chooses
John Deere.
By definition, Saloom is retired.
But retirement isn’t a word he
believes in. And though he doesn’t
consider tree farming his livelihood,
he admits that most of his so-called
retirement is spent managing his
land. “Managing this forest is what
I do,” says Saloom. “I used to
balance it with practicing surgery.
But now my focus is here.”
__________
Salem Saloom isn’t just your “typical” general surgeon turned tree farmer. Owned with his wife, Dianne, and son, Patrick, Saloom Properties, LLC is revitalizing approximately 2,200 acres of Southeast Alabama forest located in the heart of America’s original longleaf pine range.

DEERE IN THE WOODS
Saloom’s John Deere fleet began to take shape in 1984 with the purchase of a 1530 Tractor. “A three-cylinder, refurbished model a local dealer was selling,” he says with a smile. “It’s still here, and it still works.”
Over time, Saloom continued to add Deere equipment to his fleet, including a 450J LGP Dozer, a 310SE Backhoe Loader, a 5420 Tractor, and plenty of Worksite Pro™ attachments to boot. And he utilizes each machine well outside of what most other operators would call “typical” use.
“My 5420 Tractor was built for ag, but I’ll tell you right now, it’s as effective in the woods as it is in a field.”
Saloom attributes Deere’s versa- tility and reliability to the work- manship that goes into each machine. “I have friends who use competing brands, and I can tell you there’s no comparison,” he says. “John Deere is very proud of its products and parts. And that attention to detail is helping tree farmers like me restore and conserve this longleaf pine range.”
BACKBONE OF AMERICA
From the early to mid-1800s — before the age of mass-produced steel — the longleaf pine’s dense, durable, and rot-resistant lumber was America’s building material of choice. But years of extensive logging took its toll, and only a fraction of the original old-growth longleaf range survives today.
