Ballycomane, Durrus

Ballycomane (1,349 acres) (Irish: Baile an Chumain, meaning 'town of the little valley'). Part of it is Ballinwillin (Townland of the mill) with a boulder burial, with the remains of a millrace which may have been used by monks at the nearby church of Mouliward, ringfort and standing stone pair. Mass rock in Vincent Hurley’s farm. The oldest family are probably the Hurleys (Vincents), they moved from Ballnacarriga outside Dunmanway and Darby Hurley who held Ballycomane Middle was allegedly evicted by Lord Carbery when a rent payment was missed, the farm was then given to the Vickerys c 17703. There is a Hurley/Vickery marriage at around this time not clear if connected. The O’Neills are also significant farmers with an old impressive farmyard. On the western end an area known as Cummer. Since the 1In Bishop Dives Down tour of West Cork in 1700 he mentions one of the landowners of Durrus as Colonel Freke. He presumably acquired the land forfeited by Sir Walter Coppinger who lost all by backing the wrong side in 1641. He had earlier acquired the lands including Ballycomane from the McCarthys by mortgage when they defaulted he went into possession.

It is curious that the Ballycomane Hurleys believe they were in occupation of the farm pre 1785. Around the same time there is a Vickery/Hurley marriage recorded. The Carbery Estate at least in Durrus had no policy of plantation and the Vickerys were probably the only Protestant family of substance on the townland. In contrast the Evenson who were the largest local landlords cleared the local population off the most fertile ladn wehre they became cottiers, labourers or moved to congested upland areas. The other significant farmers remained in occupation a pattern common in many part of West Cork where contrary to popular belief there were a large number of large Catholic tenant farmers. This is

3 In discussion with Vincent and Jim Hurley, their great grandfather was the one allegedly evicted. Around the same period there is a marriage between Vickery and Hurley recorded.

evidenced by the large old farmyards of local families such as the o’donovans and the O’Neills suggesting they were families of significance well back in time.

The devolution of title is as follows, in the early 17th century, the McCarthys of either Scart or Caheragh had the townland and mortgaged it to Sir Walter Coppinger. They defaulted and he went into possession. He backed the wrong horse in 1641 and his estates were forfeit. In the late 17th century the Evans-Freke family of Welsh origin (Lord Carbery) went into possession. The Carbery Estate rented to the Vickeries as tenant farmers who acquired title under the Land Acts in the early 20th century.

Deed 2nd August 1790 whereby Lord Carbery demises to John Vickery then of Ballycomane part of lands of Ballycomane called the middle division as then in his possession.
