ST OLAVE’S
NEWSLETTER I am still singing along to the songs from “The
Wizard of Oz” after last night’s J3 performance!
The children gave a superb performance of this
musical production, having worked together, with
their teachers, and they should all be justifiably
proud of their achievements.
My thanks, not just to the children but to
the staff,
parents and
Peterites who
have been so
involved in the
multitude of
different tasks
that needed to be done. There are some very tired J3s
this morning.
I have two pieces of staff news to share with you. Sadly, Mr Lawrence will be
retiring at the end of the summer term. He has been teaching at St Olave’s since
2000 and was previously Head of Science and Senior Master, and in the last few
years has been teaching physics and chemistry on a part-time basis. Mr Hunter will
be stepping down from the role of House Tutor of Fairfax House at the end of the
summer term. Mr Hunter and Mr Lawrence have nurtured and inspired the
children in their care and will both be hugely missed from their respective roles.
We will be looking to fill these roles in the first half of next term.
The U13 girls and boys have qualified
for the national hockey finals in May,
which is a tremendous achievement. This followed on from the U11 boys
and girls playing in the North of England
hockey finals this week, and the U13
boys winning the Stonyhurst Rugby
Sevens Plate. It has been so nice to
have better weather for the children to
play sport in this week. The J5 girls are
going on a netball tour to Barcelona in
the Easter holidays.

The J4s spent the day in
London yesterday, visiting
Shakespeare’s Globe
Theatre, the Tate Modern,
and then walking across
London to the West End
to watch ‘School of Rock’
at the Gillian Lynne
Theatre. They then had dinner at
Wagamama’s before
getting the train home
(somewhat belatedly due
to level crossing issues!).
Thank you to Mrs Jones
for the huge amount of organisation this trip takes – try
booking 100 rail tickets at the cheapest price when
they’re released for sale! – and all the staff who ensured
no-one got lost on the underground or whilst walking
across London.
The Friends of St Olave’s Family Bingo takes place
tomorrow evening. We have nearly 100 people coming
but can squeeze a few more in so do just turn up at
6.00pm and pay on the door if you’d like to come.
Thank you to everyone who completed the survey about
match teas. There are further details in this newsletter about the changes we are making as a result of the
feedback. We are also introducing a new set of menus
from the start of next term, and will be gathering
feedback from the pupils as to what their thoughts are on
those new meals.
Next week sees our Junior Quiz team taking part in the
first round of the national competition, Junior Schools
Challenge, taking place at Ripon Grammar School. We
also have a team taking part in the Salter’s Festival of
Chemistry competition and had a combined St Olave’s
and St Peter’s team taking part in the United Kingdom
Mathematics Trust team challenge earlier this week. It’s all
go!

Miss Fell, Director of Petersport
British Science Week
Science week went off with a bang for J5 as they had a special lesson of explosion demonstrations in their science week lesson. J4 did a’ rainbow
fizz’ experiment using acids and alkalis and then used this reaction to make a chemical
rocket. J1 experimented with UV light and used UV beads in an investigation to see which
material would let most UV light through. J3 and J2 will be doing their science week
lessons later in the term. Thank you to everyone who took part in the ‘coolest’ element vote. There were
over 200 votes and the results were: in 4th place neon; in 3rd place oxygen; in 2nd
place carbon; and in 1st place gold. It was fantastic to have so many people getting
involved and voting.

Match Teas Thank you to the 183 of you who completed the recent survey we conducted on match teas – a great response rate. It has been incredibly
useful for us to go through each individual response, so thank you for taking the time to give your thoughts.
In headline terms, one third of respondents wanted their children to stay for a hot match tea even if it means arriving back at school later than
5.30pm; one third would rather have a cold packed match tea so that children can be back by 5.30pm or earlier; and one third didn’t have a
strong view either way.
Drilling down into the comments you made, alongside some thoughts we have also had as a staff team, has meant that we are going to
implement some changes in the way we do things. Many of these we have already started to do this term. They include:
When we have Home fixtures on a Games afternoon, even if the opposition decides not to stay, we will have hot teas.
If the majority of the boys or girls in the year group are playing in a home fixture, we will include in the hot tea those children who have
been having Games training, so that a few children aren’t left out. On a non-Games afternoon, when the opposition aren’t staying but are just having juice and biscuits, then we will have juice and biscuits
too. This will allow us to get back into lessons as quickly as possible.
For Away fixtures, if we are offered a hot match tea by the opposition, the venue is close enough to allow us to have a hot match tea,
and we can be back at St Olave’s by 5.30pm, then we will stay for hot match tea.
If the above is not possible, then we will ask for a packed tea where possible.
If our boys and girls are going to the same venue, with similar start and finish times, and time allows, then everyone will have the same
refreshments.
For all fixtures, we will add a row to the Team Sheets which will say what we think is happening regarding match teas, so you can plan ahead as
to whether your child is likely to be hungry when you pick them up. Whilst we can control what happens for home fixtures, there have been
occasions when arrangements at other schools have changed at the last minute.
Despite our best endeavours there will be times when things don’t go exactly to plan. We’re always happy to receive feedback and continually
look for ways in which to improve the pupil experience, and the way in which we nurture and inspire them.
Music trip to the regional festival of Music for Youth
Albemarle Music Centre, Hull 15 March 2019
The St Olave’s Mini-Jazz Band and string quartet attended the regional festival of
Music for Youth in Hull, performing a set of around 10 minutes each to a capacity
audience. The festival adjudicators were full of praise for the two groups, noting the rarity of
the string quartet and championing its inclusion in the festival. The Mini-Jazz Band’s
rhythm section was especially noted as being a highlight, as was the improvisation
that was displayed by every member of the band. The pupils also benefitted from
experiencing an eclectic range of performances from other bands ranging from
samba bands to jazz orchestras, choirs and even a 30-piece beginner year 4 brass
band.
This was a good opportunity to showcase the St Olave’s music department outside
of the school, and also to benefit from the wealth of music-making that is happening
in its many forms all around the region.
