Comedy: Key Take-Away• Success is more likely when series and strategy are

aligned.- CBS and NBC had no discernible comedy strategy.- ABC set out to produce “broad family comedies” and delivered

on that strategy.- FOX’s strategy was to use The Mindy Project to build out its

profile of “young, connected” viewers on Tuesday.

2012-2013 Year in Review: Broadcast TV TrendsLess Predictable / Safe Renewals & Pick-Ups• Top 20 series Unforgettable initially cancelled by CBS and

replaced with Vegas.• ABC, CBS, and The CW ended long-term relationships with

their most successful producers by passing on their new projects.- ABC passed on Marc Cherry- CBS passed on Jerry Bruckheimer - The CW passed on Mark Schwahn

• NBC bucked this trend – kind of – and went further into the Dick Wolf business with Chicago Fire.

2012-2013 Year in Review: Broadcast TV Trends

Less Predictable / Safe Renewals & Pick-Ups: Key Take-Aways• Emotional responses to “strong” pilots can lead to irrational

decision-making."I don't know if it's what went wrong. It was more about what went right with the new pilots. It started very strong in the beginning of the season. They were continuing to produce great episodes. Every show knows that when they get to end of their first season, they are gonna be in competition with new pilots, and that's what happened. We had a very strong, very good crop of pilots coming in. That forces you to make very difficult decisions“ – Nina Tassler on Unforgettable’s initial cancellation.

• Past performance is no guarantee of future results – but it is certainly a good indicator.

Move Away from “The Middle” in Drama: Key Take-Away• Smart, calculated moves away from “the middle” can pay

off.- The Following on FOX- Hannibal on NBC

• Balance is important.- ABC’s drama slate lacked it.- NBC’s drama slate had it.
