Abumpy erry ride in the middle o rough seas did not deter 38 youthul participants, includingyouth representatives rom the unions and eam Young NUC activists, rom coming together or theannual Young NUC Workplan Seminar in Pulau ioman, Malaysia in November.

Discussions or the seminar centered around three important areas:Work as Inspiration; Family as Foundation; and Environment as Beneaction.

    < Work as Inspiration >

Workers must be inspired at work. With a clear purpose and motivation, productivity o workers increase hence translating to a productive economywith low employment. Tis will be the best protection or all our young

workers. In line with that, Young NUC is looking to organise activities which include IndustrialNetworking Sessions and Young NUC CROSSROADS sesions. Tere are also plans or career relatedevents revolving around new job opportunities, dialogues and plenary sessions. < Family as Foundation >

Young NUC recognises that amily must continue to serve as theoundation stone in society to balance the economic and social demandsor the sustainable development o Singapore. Tis is particularly important

as our members are in that age group where such issues matter. In order to achieve this, YoungNUC together with our activists aims to take action to bring about positive changes. Starting with apolicy caucus o 30 youths, the intent is to translate thoughts into practical action or the good o thecommunity..

< Environment as Benefaction >As responsible youths, we must do our part to keep Singapore in the same

or better environmental conditions or our uture generation. Young NUCtogether with our environmental activists intends to bring together Non-

Governmental Organisations in Singapore in a Environmental Congress to support our aim. Tiscongress plans to be the key platorm to lobby or and promote changes in the way Singaporeans livetheir lives and to play a part in helping to raise awareness o the global warming crisis.

With Young NUCs 10th anniversary coming up in April 2015, the national youth movement togetherwith our young leaders will continue to commit our ocus on the outreach, engage and nurture effortsin these three areas.

With a brain or business, aheart o compassion and a nose

or coffee, Pamela Chng gaveup a successul boutique webfirm o eight years to pursue herpassion, with the intention ogiving back to society at the sametime. Sparked by her love or agood cuppa, Pamela set up BettrBarista a social enterprise tohelp transorm underprivilegedwomen and youth-at-risk intoskilled baristas so they can secure

better work opportunities. Beyondthe skills, the one-o-a-kindacademy also trains its studentsup physically, emotionally andsocially to boost their confidenceand sel-esteem, with the ultimateaim o helping them becomeeconomically independent andlead more meaningul lives.

Not knowing i the idea would work, Pamela said her new venture was like a big experiment. She started the business when the economy was at its

worst, but was determined to embark on this journey as she knew she wanted to use coffee to change lives. Te academy today helps marginalisedwomen, especially, as Pamela believes women have the potential to go out to society to change lives and help many other people down the chain.

Pamela admitted that she has been privileged and very, very lucky throughout her journey, to which she is extremely grateul, and said it wasimportant or someone in her shoes to ask what she was going to do with those privileges and gifs given to her. She added that, in the largerscheme o things, Singaporeans have a very good lie, and urged participants at the session to take a step back and ask themselves what they coulddo with their lives, to do more or others.

How real should I be? ong Yee, Director o Te Tought Collective discusses aboutvalues, ideals, and our orgotten responsibilities. He began his session at Young NUCCROSSROADS with a lowdown on his lie experiences, sharing key episodes that shaped

him to become the person he is today.

Te Tought Collective is a group o five social enterprises that aims to make Singaporea better place, and the brainchild o someone who once struggled in school, both sociallyand academically. oday, ong Yee is a social entrepreneur determined to nurture our nextgeneration o thought leaders and youth change-makers through developing the skills, empathy and leadership necessary or Singapores uture.

At the session, ong Yee took each question rom participants with a pensive pause, with hisgenuine responses coming rom his hard lessons learnt and occasional modest successes. He shared honestly, and many times vulnerably, about his journey through hard decisions

that have led to a lie well transormed. While he was brought up knowing values, he said henever truly embodied them and thus, got through the first part o his lie being an efficientliar. He underwent the worst o experiences rom meaningless relationships, a teenagepregnancy, and even a criminal record, to sitting on the edge o a building at the brink osuicide. He woke up every day at one point with a constant death wish.

Attributing his redemption to several guardian angels who crossed his path, ong Yee turned his lie around ollowing his mothers pleas to do something about his lie, whichshe saw was an empty shell. ong Yee eventually ound his place in teaching when he was given the chance to study at the National Institute o Education (NIE). Having greateraspirations or society, he set up School o Tought first as a repeat student programme, as he empathised with young people who ell through the cracks because he himselwas a repeat student both at the O and A Levels. Te school now conducts civic education programmes under the guise o English tuition to impart values to students and givemeaning to learning.

Responding to questions about what motivates him, ong Yee shared that he strongly believes he, like many o us, was given the right and privilege to live his lie the way he ought,so the onus ell on him to ulfill his responsibilities in return. ong Yee shared that most o us know our rights, but not necessarily our responsibilities, and those who complainin lie are ofen conscious o the ormer but not the latter. He also shared that many o us have orgotten, as we grow and achieve things in our lives, that there are in act multiplehands that eed us.

Tere is a certain gratitude I have with lie. A genuine gratitude I live a day at a time, but I live each day well. As a word o advice to those who are at a crossroad in their lives, ong Yee said the important thing to do is to question who we are as a person, and ask what our responsibilities are. He believes that it is not the job that makes the person, but theexperience and interpretation o those experiences that do.
