REPORT OF TOE TRUSTE ES OF TBF: AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM, FOR THE •

YEAR E~DING lH DECEMBER, 1859.

T o Hrs ExcELLE~CY THE GovERNOR GENERAL,

&c., &c., &c.

1. The Trustees of the Australian Museum have the honor to submit to your Excellency this their Sixth Annual Report.

2. The Museum is now open to the public drtily (Sundny's excepted), from noon till 4 P.l\1., from 1\Iay till September; and from noon til\5 P .M, from September till May. During the past year it ha:~ been visited by 17,953 per:~ons of all classes, witbout any detriment to the specimens contained io the Institution.

3. The Trustees have continued to carry on their system of exchange of specimens with Foreign Museums, and have to aonoun'ce the receipt of a vnluable collection of upwards of 200 specitpens of North American mammalia and aves, from the Niagara Foils Museum, in excellent condition; also, skins and skeletons of many interesting genera of F.uropean and South Americ:tn aoimals (the types of which were wanting io the Australian Museum) from the Museum of Natural History of Ham burgh. Ca~es·of specimen~, in various branches of zoology and ethnology, are on their way from the Royal Copenhagen Museum, and from the Museum of the University of Bologna. Io ad• li~ion to these acqui<iitions the Trustees have to announce tho anivnl, in Port J ack~on, of five large cases, contain ing the whole of the casts prepared by the Bri~ish ~l usoum, of the f•1ssil re roams of extinct an imnls io tho N utional collection; for these the Mu~eum is indebted t•l the good services of Professor Owen, through the exertions of Oeorge Maclcay, Esq , and Dr. Bconett.

4. Throughout the year two efficient tuidermists have been employed in setting up dnd mounting the skins o£ mammal in aod aves; in preparing the various specimens continually presented to the Museum; and in cleaning and preserving from decay the collections already di3ployed for public inspection.

5. Since their last Report the Trustees have to announce a. largo addition to the number of mounted specimens exhibited in the large Ihll. The number of these is now as follows, viz. :-Of mammalia, 177; skeleton of mammal in, 15; oasts of fossil bones, &~., 70; skins of birds, l,GO 1; skeletons of birds, 9; reptiles, 195; fish, 470; besides the collections of mollusca, insects, radiata, zoophytes, fossils, and minerals; also, othographical specimens of various kinds,-a small portion only of which can be made available to the public on account of the want of space necessary for their display.

G. The donations during the past year, from private individuals, have also added many objects of interest to the collection. Amongst the.se may be recorded a specimen of the bogaxis deer (Aa:is po1·cinus), from Iridia, and a collection of cruiltacea. and algoo, &c., by His Excellency the Governor General; a young alpaca (Ltucl1erria Llama), by Charles Ledger, Esq.; a. hunting leopard ( Guepa•·da jub 1tu), and an Indian bear ( O'rsus labiat'us),

by W. lleaumont, Elsq, of Botany; a full-grown female sea leopard (Stenorluplclws lepton9:r), by J. Thoruson, Esq., of Shoalbaven; a collection of fossil bones, by F. N. lsnac, Esq., of • 453- Dnrling

Darling Downs; a fine specimen of the great grey kangaroo ( Mactoptts mojo~·), together

with a collection of reptilia, pisces, nod iosoota from Olarencc River, by J. F. ~ilcox, Es_q.;

s New Zcalnod owl parrot ( Strigops liabroptilus ), by Dr Reo wick; a collection of cOJos,

antiquities, fossils, &c., by the Uev. Dr. ~lackay; several rnre nod beautiful birds, by

Alfred Deoisoo, Esq.; and 11 collection of specimens of v:lfious kinds, from Erum11ngll, &c.,

by J. B. Turner, Esq. Besides these acquisitions, there have been presented t~ the l\Ius~um during the past year, from various individuals, 25 specimens of mam~nlta, 54 bnds,

45 reptilia, 48 fishes, 74 molluscn, 56 crustacen, 75 insects, 19 radiat~, upwa~ds of

200 fos3ils 11nd geological specimens, 23 botanical speciweos, 32 ethnograph1cnl specimens,

lM coins, and several other miscellaneous article!.

Amongst the donations to the Library, thll 'rrustces would cspeci!llly mention a co~y of Gay's "Ilibtori'a de Chili," 22 vols. with 2 vols., of colorcd plates, from the Colomal

Goverom~nt; and thc publications of the Geological Survey of Orcat Britain, nod liiuseum

of Practical Geology, through Sir Roderick lllurchison.

7. The Trustees have, as occasion presented, expended such small sums as the means

at their disposal would permit in the purchase of such specimens of interest as have pre

sented thcwselves, but these opportunities do not occur frequootly; nnd it would ben matter

worthy of consideration of the Government and the Legislature, whether, looking to the very

scanty representation of the class mnmmalia in the llluseum, it would not be desirable that

11 sum should be specially appropriated annually to tho purchase of such specimens as are

required to afford to the people of New South Wnles no opportunity of examining the

representatives or types of the various families belonging to this elasR, which are found in

other portions of the globe, and of comparing them with those belonging to Australia.

8. A sot of brief instructions has been drawn up, containing hints for the collection

&nd preservation of specimens in V3rious branches of natural history; these have been printed

wi.;h a view t{) their being gratuitously circulated throughout the Colonies.

9. Tbe sum of £500 granted by the Legislature during last year, for the purchase of

scientific works for the Museum Library, has been placed at the disposal of Dr. Bennett,

Georgo l\facleay, Esq., and Professor Owen, in England, with a request that those gentlemen

should expend the amount in the best manner possible. The execution by these gentlemen

of the duty imposed upon them has fully justified the confidence placed in them by the

Trustees. A very valuable collection of books purchased at a. very cheap rate has already

be«ln transmitted to the l\1useum, and large consignments are still expected.

10. With a view to rendering the mineralogical collections, or ot least a. portion of

them, available to the public, t he Trustees employed a practical mineralogist to n11me and

classify them; owing, however, to that gentleman's lamented decease shortly after be

commenced his labors, the work was discontinued. A general collection, according to the

classification of Phillips, has, however, been temporarily arranged, as far as practicable, by ~~~ .

11. The Trustees have to record the resignation of George :Macleay, Esq., and

Dr. Bennett, as Elective Trustees of the Museum, and the election in their stead of Sir Charles Nicholson, Bart., and the Honornble R. J. Want, Esq.

12. The Trustees beg t{) refer to their paragraph in their last Report in which

allusion was made to the limited amount of space in the present building, and the urgent

necessity which existed, even then, for a large extension of accommodation, should it be the

wish of the Government that the Museum should hold out to the public of New South Wales

the means of amusement and instruction, which such institutions arc so admirably calculated to afford.

The additions made to the collections during the past year have increased the

~rgency of the nec~ssity for more accommodation, which has for the few last years pressed

1:s~l f upon the not10e of the Trustees. There is, ns stated last year, no space for the exhi

b~t!On of the ~asts from the antiqu~, for which the Colony is indebted to the generosity of

Sn Ch~rles N10holso~. T~e cast~ which have just been received from the British Museum,

and .wh10h are espec1ally mterestmg, as enabling the geologist nod zoologist to compare

apco1meos of past existences with those of tht: present duy, must remain io casks in the base•

men£, for the simple reason that there is no space in the e1isting ~1usenm where they can

be

Page 3: 1860. NEW SOUTH WALES. - Australian Museum · PDF file2 AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM. Darling Downs; a fine specimen of the great grey kangaroo ( Mactoptts mojo~·), together with a collection

bo properly arranged and exhibited. In the SA.IllO way with reference to other departments

of Mtural history, space is wanted for the display of tho specimens actually in the possession

of the Trustees; and, as every year must necessarily add largely to our stores, so it must add

to the number of specimens withdrawn from the curiosity of the public, and left to moulder

and decay in plnces where no possible use o:~n be made of them.

The books too, 1Vhich have been purchased with the funds appropriated by the Legis_

laturo to this purpose, cannot be properly arranged or classified in th~J present building,

neither con the public have the means of consulting them.

The Trustees trWit, therefore, that application will be made to the I~egislature to

provide funds for the erection of a building which, while it will be nn ornnmeut to the City,

will at the same time afford to all classes the means of inspecting the whole of the treasura.

which have been accumulating for so many years in the Museum, and which, when properly

arranged in a building constructed for the purpose of exhibiting them, will prove of great

advantage to science.

Tbo Trustees must reiterate the expression of their opinion of the dcsirJJ.bility of the

appointment of a geologist and mineralogist in connection with the Survey Department.

Tbe l\luseum is very rich in mineralogioal specimens, but these can only be properly

arranged by a person thoroughly conversant with composition, structure, and classification.

Ao effort was •nade, as already stated in this Report, to secure the services of a competeo~ minernlogis~, aod the result of his labora, for the short time be was "ble to devote himself to

the work, is seen in the classification of a portion only of the minerals in possession of tbe Trustees.

13. The Appendix contains an Abstract of the Receipts and Expenditure of the Tru&

tees on behalf of the Museum, during the year 1859. Appendix No. 2 contains a list of the various donations to the ~Iuse\llii, during the same year, with the namo, of the dollor:l.

14. The Trustees have the hooor to submit this their Report for the year one thou

sand eight hundt·ed nod fifty-nine, and io testimony thereof have caused their corporate seal

to be hereunto affixed, this first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and sixty.

By order of the Trustees,

GEOROE F&ENOH ANGA.S,

Secretary.

(L.S.) W. S. 1\IACLEAY,

Chairman.
