These Are"Million-Dollar" Photos

When the Germans cleared outof Paris in a hurry they had tolease many things behind,including men and materiel . En oneware house nearly 100 tons ofbookswere abandoned . Crate after cratehas been carefully checked as isthe practice with all captured ene-my goods , and it was discoveredthat the books were a very mixedlot indeed.

Technical manuals . Propagandabooks . Exquisite and expensive artpublications in color . Sketch books.Novels . Histories glorifying war.Books devoted to the nations hatedby the Germans. One single copyillustrated t0() different styles ofhair-do for feminine Aryan heads.Another pictured famed castles inFrance. Many discussedproblemsof Lebensraum . And of coursethere were several crates full ofMein Kamp.

Among this diverse lot weresome hundreds of copies of led-covered books, with stiff boardcovers, made up in a format muchlike a picture magazine. Therewere eight different titles, andthese contained nearly 1,000 pictures of Adolf Hitler

It is known that at least sixother titles have been included inthe series glorifying Hitler andhis achievements, but none ofthese was included in the Parisstock.

It is also known that up tothe latter part of 1940 approximately3,500,000 of

these

books had been sold , at anaverageprice of $1 .25 each. This wouldbring; in a gross

revenue of$4,375,000. At a conservative es-timate, the net profit would bein the neighborhoed of $2,500,000.

With about a dozen exceptions,every photograph is the work ofProfessor Heinrich Hoffmann, who

bears the title of Reichsbildbericht-erstatter of the Nazi Party.It

means, roughly translated : OfficialPicture Reporter . HerrHoffmannwas almost a charter member of

the party. From the foundingdays he followed Hitler like a

shadow, always endeavoring tokeep the Fuhrer in focus.Everyphotograph that Hitler permitted him to publish showed the prin-

cipal subject in a good light.

Thus we have, in this 20-yearpictorial record, pictures of the

Fuhrer and of the peoplewho "heiled" him, beginning with oneof the earliest youth groups showed

below.

Mutual smiles

The Missionaries for the LeaderAmong those who were the

earliest to be attracted by theHitler appeal were thousands uponthousands of attractive BavarianMadchen . Both Hitler and Hoff

mann knew that pictures like theone above had excellent publicity

appeal.

In very few instances were the

group pictures specially posed

. This was not necessary. German

people, including youth,were onceagain looking for a leader whomthey could follow . Theybecameardent Nazis and did party "

missionary" work in endeavoring tolead their parents into the party .

In earlier years, before therewas a shortage of labor in the

Reich, Hitler frankly told Germanwomen that they were not " full"citizens . Their function, he toldthem, was the historical German

one : Kinder , Kirchen and Kuche.

Children, church and kitchen.Later, emphasis on the church was

dropped, and that onchild-bearing for the Reich stressed.

But, though men were "supe-rior," women had the franchise.

If too young to vote, youth workedin the frequent election days toget out the vote, having faith in

Hitler's vision of destiny.

SOUTHERN Germany, whichconsists in the main ofBavaria, has a softer, war-

mer atmosphere about its country-side and its people than Prussia,in the North . In some villagesevery window in every house hasits flower box on the ledge. Flowerfestivals are frequently held, withlavish display of colorful posiesand buxom beauties.

Hitler often arranged to bepresent on these simple occasions,invariably accompanied by Hoff-mann. Sometimes, it was a gra-ciously staged affair, like theone shown below. Again therewould he spontaneous outbursts offlower-throwing . This latter customwas forbidden in 1939, owing tothe disturbing fact that on two or three occasions in Bohemia —

until shortly before that time apart of Czechoslovakia—the bou-quets of flowers unfortunately cam-ouflaged stones, or half a brick.

The birthplace of Nazism wasin Munich, formerly the gay andcolorful capital city of Bavaria.The reasons Bavarians followedthe Fuhrer ' s doctrines were dif-ferent from those which led to hissuccess in Prussia, but they all ledto the same objective . Bavarians'reasons come more from the heart;Prussians' more from the mind.

Although youngsters were mostfrequently pictured , the older folksflocked around too. Note expres-sions on opposite page : enthusias-tic, benign and, one, fatuous.

THE GENERAL STAFF APPROVESUntil 30 January1933, when he became chancellor of the Reich,

Hitler openly paraded his Brownshirts and Blackshirts throughGerman streets, but this displayof his power was merely designedto wreck the feeble rule withinthe country . The troops that he,in secret agreement with theReichswehr and the Junker Gen-eral Staff, was training for foreignconquest had to be secluded inhideaway training camps.

There were 58 such camps afew months before Hitler came topower. Lack of sufficient weapons

at that time necessitated their training with broomsticks, staves,papier-mache tanks, and woodenmachine guns.

As soon as Hitler took overthe Government, this military train-ing became more scientific, andgradually brazen. Youngsters weredecked out, at the age of ten oreven earlier, in semi-militaryuniform. On the left Hitler is shownwith a clean-faced lad, lookingevery inch a future German sol-dier . Above, Hitler has abandonedhis brown SA (Storm Troop) NaziParty uniform, and is shownwearing the full regalia of aWehrmacht officer.

BIG BUSINESS, THE JUNKERS,Hitler could not have become

Chancellor of Germany withoutsupport from nearly every class ofGermans. The backing of the"ordinary" German came gradual-

ly from 1920 on to 1933, and wassolidified during twelve years ofpower . In addition . during theseearly years the Nazi Party wassecretly supported by PrussianJunkers, the General Staff and byBig Business. How this was done,

under cover until 1933 has sincebeen boastfully revealed by Goebbels

. Stinnes, Thyssen and Kruppcontributed their millions. Schacht,Todt and other leaders of financeand industry provided money,brains and energy. Men like Strei-cher, Goering and Himmler werethe hatchet-men . The Reichswehrswore allegiance to the ex-corporal.

Appeasementyears witnessedbloodless victories . Emboldened bysuccess, Germany devastatedPoland, Norway, Denmark, Holland,

Luxembourg. Belgium andFrancewere over-run . Hitler, as a winner,

incomplete for two reasons : 1 . In

one issue only a score of phot

ographs, out of nearly 1,000, canbe shown ; 2. Photos show only

exteriors . They can't show whatgoes on inside minds.These people, many attractive-looking, have pe-

riodically backed aggressive lea-ders, sold themselves heart and

soul to vicious causes.Why? Whydo most Germans like to beregimented? Why do they fall for ra-cial hatred doctrines? Why dotheypermit the build-up of a Gestapo

state? Why can they so readily

be led to war? They were not

hypnotized by Hitler . He is only

one in Germany's long line of

world-disturbing leaders . Perhapsthe answer is in the minds and

hearts behind the smilingfacesand plausible tongues.

One man in Germany has

given Hitler more wrong

advice than any other : Joa-

chim von Ribbentrop, minister of

Foreign Affairs . He toldHitler

Britain would not declare war overPoland . He is said to have backed

the flight of, Rudolf Hess, to

England in May 1941, claiming

that Hess could " persuadeBritain's " appeasers " to over-

throw Churchill . He urged Hitler

to attack the USSR, contendingthat the Red Army would be a

pushover . He reported to the

Fuhrer that the United Statescould not mobilize its strength in

time to be of importance.

The biggest liar in

Germany is no longer that folk-lore character

, Baron Munchausen. He is the Prop

aganda Minister, Dr.

Paul Joe Goebbels. His propaganda has twisted, warped and

virtually annihilated the Germa

n soul. Goebbels is as unscrupulousdomestically as he is

professionally. Married, with six children, he

has been a notoriously fait

hless husband. His wife sued fordivorce in

1937, naming 27 co-respondents,

mostly film actresses

. Hitler ordered the suit called off

.

As movie"dictator", Goebbels would like

to forget one film : Papis Geburt-

stag, (Daddy's Birthday) . Anover-eager staff member, think-

ing to curry favor, made this film,

showing his boss surrounded by

Magda, his wife, and their manychildren . But audiences recalled

the seven-and-twenty co-respond-ents . Public reaction was unexpec-

tedly rude . with many German

versions of the Bronx cheer . Goeb-bels had the film withdrawn over-

night . He makes a specialty of

"selling " Nazism with a smile.

Von Falkenhorst has been one

of Germany 's leading strategists.Note his features, a dead-ringer

for the movie player, Erich vonStroheim . Dietl is called in Ger-many the "hero of Narvik."

Von Rundstedt and Von Kluge

have been the best-known German

leaders on

the Western Front

since Rommel's death . Von

Brauchitsch was formerly chief of

staff until he and

Hitler disagreed over Russian campaign strategy.

Colone-General Listwas executed after the 20 July "attack" on

Hitler . Von Kuechler is in disgrace,

may have been "liquidated"
