The 10th Golden Drum Festi-val was inviting everyone “to the new European advertising coast”. Yet the coast of Slovenia still measures good 43 kilome-tres, or like running a marathon, the new European advertising coast has expanded East and West, North and South. And each of us has run many mara-thons to achieve our dreams and goals since then.

This year, we had lots of dreams and goals for the Golden Drum Festival. And we turned dreams into action to challenge and award creativity of New Eu-rope, to explore and inspire New Thinking. We will celebrate and reward the most creative, the bravest and the very best from New Europe, thus returning to the original idea of this festival. And we are doing so with a new, fresh and unique approach to the competition.

More than ever “New Thinking” is needed when we search for great, simple and straightfor-ward ideas. It is needed when we craft ideas and transform them into ads; that is what we want to communicate and how we want to do it. In today’s World there are plenty of tools and channels available. On the other hand, there is an ever demanding con-sumer who is nowadays more educated, more sensible and has great expectations towards products and services. In the end, creating fun, touching emo-tions and entertaining are key

marketing 3.0, innovation, inspi-ration, search for new ideas and change. Change is everything and everything changes.

Golden Drum Festival’s ProgramProgram, made in the spirit of “New Europe, New Thinking”New Europe, New Thinking isn’t just the main theme of the 18th Golden Drum Festival, but a long term challenge, given to agencies, advertisers, media and other members of creative industry. With a new image and positioning of the Golden Drum Festival, organizers wished to position this year’s festival as a place for most creative, inno-vative and boldest ideas from New Europe and new thinking.Golden Drum Festival has in the past created a strong name and recognition, becoming one of the few Slovenian and inter-nationally recognized brands. As an international advertising festival it has always been an accelerator and herald of new ideas, something this year’s festival also strived for. Golden Drum is and remains central advertising event of New Eu-rope and one of the biggest European advertising festivals. When deciding on the program, the organisers have strived to build this year’s four day pro-gram on new thinking, changes and novelties that accompany us in business environment and personal life every day. After “Brainstorming” and “Recon-struction”, key themes in 2009 and 2010, respectively, Golden Drum continued to search for new, fresh ideas, new thinking, innovation, approaches and experience. Next to all the nov-

elties introduced this year, the organizers have made a prom-ise to deliver only the best of the long term festival commit-ment: “sharp competition, good school, wild parties and devilish challenge”.

18th Golden Drum’s ProgramProgram will be held in three halls simultaneously. In four days, 30 lectures, five work-shops and four panels with over 50 top speakers will provide quality content for the Festi-val’s participants. On Kodak Hall’s big stage, participants will have a chance to listen to some of the most renowned representatives of industry and global agency networks, like Fernando Vega Olmos, JWT Worldwide, Farid Chehab in Nicola Novellone, Leo Burnett, Patrick Hanson-Lowe, Publicis Peter Sherman, BBDO Europe, Middle East & Africa, Gustavo Martinez, McCann WorldGroup Europe and Petteri Kilpinen, TBWA\Europe.To ensure an appropriate di-versity of the program, apart from speakers, coming from agencies, the participants of the Golden Drum Festival will have a chance to listen to Will Sansom, a journalist and analyst from the magazine Contagious, Jeannette Liendo Global Mar-keting Director for Microsoft, Mark Husak, representative of one of the most respected global research companies

Millward Brown and Michael Conrad, president of Berlin School of Creative Leadership. Kate Robertson will present an interesting project called „One Young World”. On media planning, buying and about usefulness of data from media researches, a panel from Vesna Marđonović, GlaxoSmithKline CEE, with guests Victor Geus, Jim Kite, Andraž Zorko, James Kent and Dariusz Janczewski, representatives of advertisers, media and research agencies will be held. The program will be concluded by a debate, moderated by Janez Rakušček with guests: Stefan Schmidt, president of the Single Channel Jury, Matias Palm-Jensen, presi-dent of the Multi Channel Jury and Tomasz Pirc, representative of the Golden Drum Competi-tion Council. Smaller stage of the Emerald Hall will host more specific and practically useful lectures that will also be presented more in-teractively. Beside the lectures about advertising and creativ-ity, Krešimir Macan, Manjgura, will give a lecture about Public Relations and Digital Commu-nications. Participants will also have a chance to listen to Micky Denehy and Steve Henry, rep-resentatives of EACA School of Advertising & Communications and Peter Kamstedt, represent-ative of Berghs School of Com-munications, while two lectures by Hannes Eder and Igor Arih

will be dedicated to the role of music in advertising. Lecturers Alexey Fadeyev and Elliot Polak will talk about the successful approach to adaptations and upgrades of global campaigns for the needs of regional and local markets. Each festival day, one workshop will be held in Mediteranea Hall. Golden Drum remains, like in previous years, a festival of fes-tivals, with the screenings and presentations of the winners from the Epica, AdFest, ADC*E,

FIAP and ICAC The CUP. A wider overview of the last year’s international awards will be presented by Emma Wilkie, Gunn Report. A special place in the Program is reserved for the Competition and its awards: presentations of finalists of group Q: Integrated communi-cation campaigns, screenings of entries in the Mediteranea Hall, all four days of the Festi-val, screenings of the finalists of the Single Channel section on Thursday before the Sin-

gle Channel Award Ceremony and screening of finalists of Multi Channel section on Friday evening and Saturday morn-ing, before the evening’s Multi Channel Awards Ceremony and Festival Closing Gala.

Golden Drum CompetitionDifferent CompetitionGolden Drum’s Competition Council of the 18th Golden Drum Festival has introduced several changes in the Competition structure this year. The most rec-ognisable novelty, on which the whole new competition structure is built upon, is the division of the competition in two sections:

Single Channel - for entries that excel in the most creative and efficient use of a single commu-nication channel

A. Film (television, cinema & online) B. Press C. Outdoor D. Radio E. Direct communication F. Corporate & brand materials G. Digital H. New or innovative

Multi Channel, for entries that promote creative use and inte-gration of more than one com-munication channel

Q. Integrated communication campaigns R. Direct campaigns S. Digital campaigns T. Events U. Public relations V. Innovative campaigns

This structure reflects current practice of advertising agencies and follows the everyday logic of creating advertisements and advertising campaigns.

Investment in the future of the FestivalCompetition Council of the Golden Drum Festival realises that these large, partly radical and partly innovative changes of the Competition structure will show true results in the follow-ing years, but the organizers are already this year reasonably happy with the current results. In spite the fact that they had to renounce certain applications from outside the frame of New Europe, Competition groups for specialized areas of creative industry and a number of extra awards, while the current eco-nomic situation doesn’t look en-couraging, a total of 1491 entries were submitted in the official 18th Golden Drum Competition. Together with the unofficial Off Drum Competition, that contrib-uted 210 entries for Piran Por-toroz Poster Award, the whole Competition of the 18th Golden Drum counts 1701 entries.

Virtuoso AwardsEach jury shall nominate a maximum of three en-tries from those included on the shortlist to receive the following special Virtuoso Awards:

Virtuoso Awards do not receive points.

Golden Watch AwardFinalists in group Q will present their works per-sonally as part of the Festival Program. A special jury shall judge all works presented live and shall present the Golden Watch Award to the best work. This award also does not result in the awarding of any points.

The winner of the Golden Watch Award will re-ceive one of the two exquisite and elegant Hugo Boss watches.

Golden Drum’s Juries

Single Channel Jury

Different challengesIn accordance with the new struc-ture of the Competition, the works entered in the 18th Golden Drum Competition were evaluated by two Juries, assembled especially for Single Channel and Multi Chan-nel. Members of both Juries are renowned professionals in charge of creative and innovative depart-ments of large advertising agen-cies and international networks. Single Channel Jury is lead by Stefan Schmidt, TBWA Europe and Multi Channel Jury is lead by Ma-tias Palm-Jensen, EMEA, McCann Worldgroup. The decision that all entries will be judged by only two Juries was made because of the wish for greater competence and credibility of the Juries; a thing only achieved by an appropriate number and careful selection of Jury members. Posters, entered in the Piran Portorož Poster Award (PPPA) competition, organized by Golden Drum Festival together with Municipality of Piran and Tourist As-sociation of Portorož, will be evalu-ated by a five member Jury, lead by Adrian Botan, McCann Erickson.

Piran Portorož Poster Award exhibitionFrom October 5-8 in the beau-tiful Tartini square in Piran, 24 shortlisted entries from Piran Portorož Poster Award will be exhibited. Selected from 210 en-tries received this year, only the best posters got the spotlight at the 18th Golden Drum Festival. Piran Portorož Poster Award was organized by Golden Drum Festival together with the help of Municipality of Piran and Tur-ist Association of Portorož.

Golden Drummers CommunityIn the course of years since Golden Drum started drumming, calling great minds from all over New Europe, Drummers were always there to shape and carry its message. You, our dear Golden Drummers, are our “raison d’être” why Golden Drum does what it does and why it’s so damn good at it! You helped us shape its image, its expe-rience and its friendly note.

We see Drummers as unique persons, who don’t satisfy themselves with average, everyday, just-so-we-meet-the-deadline kind of answers. Drummers strive for more. More creativity, higher standards, mind boggling solutions and unique, new thinking. And of course, being recognized as the best at what they do!

Drummers meet in person at least once a year at the Golden Drum Festival, but they also contrib-ute to online Drummers Community on Facebook, Youtube and Twitter. There, Drummers discuss hot issues, share their views and build friendships that last for life.

Young Drummers at Golden DrumGolden Drum Festival realises that the future of creative industry lies in the hands of the young. That is why young creatives under 30 get special discount when registering and the exclusive right to compete in our unofficial Off Drum Competi-tion, Piran Portorož Poster Award. 24 finalists of Piran Portorož Poster Award Competition are al-ready exhibited in the beautiful Tartini square in Pi-ran, but the winner will be announced at the Multi Channel Awards Ceremony and Festival Closing Gala, on Saturday, October 8, 2011, the last day of the festival in the evening.

Fun ContestsWe are happy that more and more Drummers compete in our fun contests on Golden Drum’s Facebook and Twitter profiles, winning free regis-trations or just participating for fun and fame.

At the 18th Golden Drum, we got three winners of our fun unofficial contests, who will visit us in Portorož this year: Maria Stoilova-Hristoskova (aka Twitter user @jabajaborana) from Bulgaria was the winner of the Twitter Copy Contest with the win-ning slogan:

Maria’s slogan was selected as the best and most creative slogan from the 183 examples we re-ceived.

Toshka Ivanova from Bulgaria and Milorad Ste-fanovski from Macedonia were the winners of Golden Drum’s Pirate Ad Contest.

We are sure that their winning works will attract many great Pirates of advertising to Portorož.
