• 1922-1928 - Gross National Product rose by 30%– GNP = total value of goods and services
produced in a nation during a specific period of time
• Made people feel optimistic– Limited knowledge about economy– Led to reckless spending, investing

• Automobiles– Increased steel, oil, rubber business– Employed 4 million workers

• 1923 - 1929 unemployment averaged 3%– November 2006 = 4.4%– January 2009 = 7.6%
• Slowed growth of organized labor– Union membership decreased– Welfare capitalism also helped

• Led people to buy new products, movie tickets, attend sporting events, leisure activities
