ALBANY Avalanche Manager: Pat Barry (Elizabeth) Age: 59 Occupation: Retired

TML Champion x 2

The Season Story

The Avalanche enjoyed an amazing season, culminating in a seven game World Series win over tough North Adams and a rugged six game divisional test with Walla Walla. Mickey Mantle created 255 runs, hit 53 homers, scored 209 runs and drove in 148. Ted Williams created 201 runs on 54 homers, scoring 133 times and driving in 187. Duke Snider formed the other part of perhaps the best outfield in TML history by clubbing 49 homers, scoring 119 times and driving in 169 runs. Nellie Fox was a stalwart in the leadoff spot and at the keystone. The mound was anchored by a capable staff: Mizell 15-3 2.82, Hoeft 18-6 3.11, Jackson 17-7 3.33, Mossi 15-2 3.59, and Conley 12-6 3.97. Hoeft also got the pivotal Game 7 win. Mantle and Williams were the Series hitting stars. It is a special season because I was born in 1957. A nice gift. ARKANSAS Travelers Manager: Bill “Willie” Jelks (Lynda) Age: 74 Occupation: Retired USAF Flyboy

The Season Story

The Travs backslid in 1957 after being league runner-up the previous season. With largely the same roster, both pitching and defense foundered. There is every hope that next season will allow a return to contention as GM Willie Jelks plans to shake up the coaching staff in an effort to bring out full potential. BEVERLY Hillbillies Manager: Mike Dickinson (Andrea) Age: 47 Occupation: Meteorologist/Philanthropist

The Season Story

Not even Willie Mays could save this miscast group of misfits called the Beverly Hillbillies from a last place finish. Mays managed to pace the anemic offense (led the team in all offensive categories except doubles). To fit in with his lame teammates Mays was thrown out in 19 out of 39 stolen base attempts. Classic Mays - a true team player. Still, there is a collection of offensive talent that may pay dividends over the next few years. On the other hand the pitching was bordering on atrocious (of a very poor quality; extremely bad or unpleasant) however, no 20 game losers on this squad. Joe Nuxhall managed a winning record and a decent ERA. The "better" Hillbilly pitchers (with real ERAs under 4.00) were hit harder than a Chuck Norris opponent. The bullpen provided no meaningful relief. I suppose it can only get better from here though I think there is a really good chance that I will stuck in this position for a while. BLOOMINGTON Burning Bunyans Manager: Bob Weisman (Janet) Age: 56 Occupation: Meteorology Professor

The Season Story

An impressive-looking statistical year for the Burning Bunyans was in practice less impressive. The Bunyans used a quietly amazing offensive season from Eddie Mathews (3rd in runs created/27 outs) with 157 runs created and major assists from Ed Bouchee to score over 900 runs. However, a lot of this hay was made in beating up the weaker teams in the TML, as BY went 20-36 against Albany, Walla Walla, Brooklyn, North Adams and Coachella Valley. North Adams consistently shut down the Bloomington offense, which foreshadowed a conference playoff loss. The pitching was consistently questionable as 4 major starting pitchers ranked in the top 15 for run support, but the real problem was having anyone available to finish games. The finishing problem seems to be an issue extending into the front office because …. (Ed. Note: because why?) BROOKLYN Browns Former Retro Team Name

Manager: Jim Pertierra (Janet) Sanford Browns Age: 67 Occupation: Platform Manager - Cushman and Wakefield

The Season Story

With the second best offense in the Division and some of the worst pitching this side of Summer, Brooklyn finished exactly where they should have been (and could have been worse). (Anyone see any ties to the 3 teams playing in Ebbets Field's runs against?) Brooklyn could hit with nearly everyone in the starting lineup pounding towards Bedford Avenue, led by Charlie Maxwell and Frank Robinson. The pitching was pathetic and that is being kind. No bullpen equals few wins but the two youngsters Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax, both nearing the end as they move toward puberty, were just outstanding and will be missed. The Browns will be looking to trade for #42. The rosaries start now. CHETICAMP Micmacs Manager: Eric Rogers Age: 58 Occupation: Meteorologist

The Season Story

As expected the Micmacs did get back over .500 thanks to a much better starting pitching, led by Tom Brewer (17-9, 2.74 ERA). Without looking at the standings, one would think the '57 Micmacs were a contender: 4th in team ERA, 5th in batting average, and first in fielding percentage. While the team improved 13 wins over the '58 squad, they just could never put together a consistent winning run to challenge for a playoff spot, thanks to late-inning bullpen woes (12 games lost with the lead after 7 innings, most in the league). The '56 editions looks similar on paper. COACHELLA VALLEY Earthquakes Manager: Mike Landin (Teri) Age: 63 Occupation: Retired/Part-time Professor/Softball Player

The Season Story

Early on, it looked like a fourth straight season of watching Conference rival Albany run away and hide, leaving the Wild Card up for grabs. The Quakes were over confident that it was theirs for the taking, only to be “surprised” by the former last place team, Walla Walla, having to settle for 3rd place. The team’s strength was once again their pitching, 2nd in team ERA and 2nd in CG. Ace Warren Spahn (23-11, 2.60, 30 CG) put up “Pitcher of the Year” type numbers. Jim Bunning (19-10) just missed another 20-win season, as did Al Worthington (18-12). Newcomer Dixie Howell (14 SV, 1 BS) was fine in the closer role. Offensively, Al Kaline, Bob Boyd, Don Hoak and Rocky Colavito led the way. Joe Cunningham (.350, .958 OPS) was awesome in a part-time role. The Quakes roster will take a major hit for 1956 and another for 1955. Bleak times are ahead for this storied franchise. DULUTH Thundercats Manager: Kevin Tyle (Bryan) Age: 53 Occupation: Computer Administrator/Meteorologist

The Season Story

Another tough year for the Thundercats and it was an accomplishment to avoid losing 100 games. Tony Kubek and Dale Long led the offense, although their playing time was less than ideal. Without them, things would have been much worse. Pitching was mediocre as well, with Camilo Pascual and Lindy McDaniel the only effective day-in, day-out starters. The bullpen, with the exception of Cal McLish, was dreadful; Stu Miller was especially disappointing. A depleted roster will make it even tougher for Duluth to avoid the century mark in losses come 1956. JUPITER Marcos Manager: (Mike Landin) Age: -- Occupation: ----

The Season Story

After making it to the Atmospheric Conference Finals the past two seasons, expectations were high that the team would contend once again. However, the Marcos seemed to never get on track, especially on the road where they were tied for the worst road record (.338) in the TML and were shutout 11 times. It is hard to believe that a team that includes Hank Aaron, Minnie Minoso, Ken Boyer, Harvey Kuenn and Dick Schofield would finish last in batting and not even score 600 runs on the season! One cannot blame Aaron and Minoso as they were the sole run producers. The Marcos starting staff (72 CG) carried the team as far as it could go, as the bullpen was shaky at best, 11 SV and 10 BS. A rebound is expected in 1956, as the team should pull it together for a pennant run. It would be great to hire a manager. The Season Story

After 30 calendar years in the TML and another 20+ Retro years, I am running out of ways to say "This team stinks" or "Wait 'til next year!!!" This team didn't even have a player worthy of an All-Star Nomination. I mean, the highlight of our season was when it ended. We do have some players to rebuild around. Just hoping they are not too few and good only to become mediocre again. The Season Story

Winning our division and a conference championship and then pushing the mighty Albany Avalanche to 7 games in the 1957 championship series, 1957 was a great year for the Bevers. The Bevers were led offensively by Bill Virdon (.316/16/80) Ray Jablonski (.342) and Red Schoendienst (.309,80 rbi's and 90 runs scored)But the story of the season was the pitching staff (98-56) With a team era of 3.00 the Bever had a true Ace of the staff in Billy Pierce (17-9, 2.82,and a 4 hit shutout in game 6 of the championship series)He was backed up by Frank Sullivan (15-6, 2.93) and Sal Maglie (11-2, 2.18), The closer, Ike Delock had a great year as well (2.52, 17 saves. After years of climbing the ladder and slipping back the Bevers reached the top in 1957. Here is to hoping in 1956 we can again compete for a Championship and go over the top! SIOUX FALLS Fightin g Sioux Manager: Jeff Chapman (Sally) Age: 51 Occupation: NWS Meteorologist

The Season Story

Not even the greatest sage knew what would come from the '57 version of the Fighting Sioux. Plenty of offense was a guarantee and we knew the pitching was shallow. But NO ONE saw what would happen at 1B - 118 errors by Zernial. Pretty sure this might be a league record in fielding futility. At least the "Stone Glove" promotion will be popular next season. On the other side of the diamond, Hodges played a full season of errorless ball while driving in a team high 110 runs despite a .249 AVG. I'm afraid, more of the same is behind this team. A second-best final block (28-14) propelled Sioux Falls to a mid-division finish, so there may be hope for the past if the draft/trading can bring some live arms to the organization. The Season Story

The move back to Ebbets Field did not help SM very much, as they moved up only one place from the 1958 last place finish. Probably should have done slightly better in the Standings, as they were only third from the bottom in both Team pitching and batting, and fourth from the bottom in Team Fielding; however, the underperformers were legion on the Team, particularly led by hoped for Ace Lew Burdette, who compiled a 4.64, 6-23 Record vs his Real-life 3.71 17-9. A few unexpected bright spots came from low-end unlimited players Dick Rand (c) and Johnny Goryl (3b), who both significantly out performed their Real-life stats. The pitching should improve somewhat going back to 1956, but the batting leaves a lot to be desired; Playoff prospects seem dim, with a bottom-half of the League finish more than likely. The Season Story

Kind of a surprise season for the Wombats, survived a tough battle and made it to the playoff, only to lose to the Avalanche in 6 games. The team was paced by Johnny Podres 20-3 record, and great support from swingmen Ray Narleski (2.55 ERA), Bob Purkey (10 wins and 12-for-12 in save opportunities) and Don Elston (11 wins and 6 saves with a 3.17 ERA). The offense was paced by Roy Sievers (40 HRs and 141 RBI) and Ernie Banks (40 HRs and 116 RBIs). Bob Skinner and Vic Wertz each had 20-plus home runs as well.
