"In the long history of the world, only a few generations havebeen granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximumdanger. I do not shrink from this responsibility--I welcome it. Ido not believe that any of us would exchange places with any otherpeople or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotionwhich we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all whoserve it--and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. Andso, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do foryou--ask what you can do for your country."

I TO OUR SECOND GRADUATING CLASS
It is a distinct pleasure for me to pLace this message inour fourth POLARIS. Most of you have attended Robert E.Peary since it began in September of 1960. You may rememberthe committees and meetings we had that warm summer beforewe opened. If you do remember this, then as Plankowners, thisgraduation is a particular moment of satisfaction since youhave truly "grown up" with our school.
During the school years beginning in 1961, 1962, and 1963,twenty-three, twenty-eight, and sixteen students entered re-spectively the Class of 1964. Actually, we do not consider yout'new" when we recall all the changes we have had; in realityyou have shared so much with us that your "newness" disap-peared shortly after you arrived. The total school has been en-riched by your enrollment.
At each graduation, there is a time when serious thought isgiven to those who bave assisted the student in attaining this
particular rung on the ladder of success. Although it has been difficult at times, it isbasically simple to climb one rung at a time when you have realistic goals. However, the difficult aspect is the one of selecting the proper ladder to climb. Your choices aremany and of necessity your selection must be limited. Your families and friends havebeen helpful in this respect, and on many occasions various members of the teachingprofession have been a major source for the assistance each desires. Friendships, suchas these, should be recognized for their true worth in that such friendships require ob-jectivity, restraint, and encouragement, one to another.
It is in the area of faculty-student interpersonal relationships that Robert E. PearyHigh School is becoming unique. The school is rather traditi.onal in many of its goalsand practices, and this is as it should be when our goals mesh with those of reality. Ourstrides have been made in the area of human relationships, and our faculty has devotedmany hours to developing processes which enhance the learning process. As more ismade known about "learning" and as more changes are made in education, we will notethat the most significant changes will be those which facilitate learning. Also, the an-swers to the problems of learning will continue to assist us in developing better inter-personal, and eventually, international relationships. There is no process more complexthan that of learning; there is no greater solution to be found than that of how to develophuman relationships that enable the individual to experience the reality of each situationand to act in a manner consistent with his goals.
Robert E. Peary High School is dedicated to a man whose successes resulted not onlyfrom his intellect, careful planning, and persistence, but equally important, from hiswillingness to examine the "whys" of his failures. Our continued emulation of thesecharacteristics produces that irrepressible restlessness which enhances our uniqueStudent Body and Faculty.
On behalf of the Faculty and Staff, I wish you, the Class of 1964, the "Friendly Class,"best wishes for the future.
