The much anticipated 2017 Shepparton Swap Meet has come and gone. My congratulations to all those involved – without your energy and passion the event would not have been so successful. The weather gods were finally with us and we could not have asked for a better day. It is not by chance that an event such as this runs so smoothly. Our Swap and Catering Committees led by Lloyd Healey and Anne Podbury have developed a vast amount of knowledge around how to organise and run a successful Swap Meet. During my breaks on the day, I had the opportunity to call into all of the food stalls and exit gates, with the intention of listening to the banter and comments of both our members and patrons leaving the site – the vibe was high, the camaraderie was strong and patrons loved the swap. Top job by all! By the October general meeting Treasurer Julie should have a much clearer picture of how profitable the 2017 Swap was. On a lesser note it was disappointing to hear some members that were listed for roles on the day had not contacted the organisers prior to the event in regards to their non-attendance. Please note that monies from the swap go a long way in funding the club during the year and many hands make light work.

RED PLATES----A big reminder to those members that have a vehicle on the Club Permit Scheme (CPS) through our club. VicRoads requires you to remain a financial member to be able to drive your CPS vehicle. To stay financial you must pay your annual subs prior to the AGM in November. Best to pay sooner rather than too late. For your convenience, subs can be paid directly into the Club’s bank account-- GVMVDC inc. at Bendigo Bank, BSB 633 000 Acct No 136625076. Most importantly, enclose your name and membership number as details. Paying on the night of the AGM puts a lot of unnecessary work on our Secretary and Treasurer, which I can assure they do not need.

On the matter of the upcoming AGM, a number of committee members will be stepping aside. Some members have attended past committee meetings and now have a greater understanding of the workings and processes that take place in making our club strong and vibrant. We strongly urge members to consider nominating for a position.

Please note that as the club year draws to a close, there is still time to put forward names of worthy members for Life Membership, Club Member of the Year, and also Annual Charity donations.

The renovation of the club rooms is almost complete, with some work to be finalised with the library area and hopefully functioning soon.

Catch you at the October meeting. Bill Winters

This month’s Journal features another Pride and Joy story, this time from Peter Vibert about his TR4. It’s

always interesting to read about the process of a major restoration – there’s clearly a lot of work involved! Thanks to Peter, Fred and Leigh for their contributions.

There are plenty of events in our calendar in the next month or two, but the biggest one for our club is the Rally of the Valley. This is the only rally we run where we invite members of other clubs, and some of those visitors travel major distances to be here. GVMVDC members are encouraged to attend, even if it’s just for one day. Details are on page 7.

As Bill has noted, it’s time to pay your subs (preferably by direct deposit), nominate members for awards, suggest suitable charities for our donations and nominate yourself for a position – don’t forget!

If you’re not receiving a monthly email advising of a new Journal being available on our website, then you need to let me know! Just send a message to the Club’s email address (top of page 2) and I’ll add you to the list. Over 140 members now get this monthly message.

See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are, and turn off your mobile phone! Brendan Walsh

BUY SELL AND SWAP: Mick Newham spoke about his 1932 Chevrolet roadster which is for sale. Daryle Bell has a 1960 Hillman Minx for sale for $9000 neg. Also another car for parts.

Supper Roster: Bev Brownley, Sarah Daldy, Lorraine Threlfall.

President Bill declared the meeting closed at 8.55pm and invited members and their guests to supper. Next meeting will be held on 12th October 2017.

Notes from the September Committee meeting: It was good to have a couple of members sitting

in as guests to see how the Committee operates. Hopefully they will nominate for a position at the AGM.

A working bee was held to construct shelving in the recently extended library. Another might be worthwhile. The speakers need to be reconnected in the main hall.

We may need to look at where our disabled parking bays are located, since the main access to the hall is now very close to them – maybe a new one needs to be constructed to the east, leaving the area near the door clear.

The Swap Meet went very smoothly. Lloyd has a meeting with Council to discuss the new regulations for using the showgrounds.

We need to speak to our insurers (Elders) about volunteer insurance for members over 80.

The club’s Christmas break-up is on 10th December. BYO food but drinks, ice cream and lollies provided.

It was great to see young Mooroopna driver Garry Jacobson doing so well in very difficult conditions in the Bathurst 1000, getting to the lead in his first stint, before handing over to lead driver Jason Bright.

Oscar Piastri (grandson of Hugh MacFadyen) finished in second place in his first year driving a single seater car in the British F4 Championship. Oscar also won both individual driver awards, the JT Memorial Award and the Drivers Choice Award. He is now moving up to Formula Renault, a well respected series which is often the pre-runner for drivers before they move onto other series such as Formula Three, FIA Formula 2 Championship or Formula One.

have coffee there, and/or lunch). Details at the October meeting.

**Progressive Lunch – Sunday 29th October 2017

This is an old favourite, where we are encouraged to dress in the era of our vehicles, having a lunch course at three different members’ houses. We each bring a pre-arranged lunch course (soup, main or dessert). At this meeting, please put your name on the list for the course that you wish to bring, so we know what to expect.

The first course (soup) will be at the Healey ranch, Katamatite-Shepparton Road Congupna; the first house past the tennis courts. Gather from 10.30am if you would like a cuppa before soup, or from 11.00am for soup.

Main course will be at the Clubrooms, where we can utilise our kitchen to keep dishes warm, and can sit down in comfort to eat and have a cuppa.

We are looking for a volunteer to host the sweets course.

Bald Archy Exhibition, Swanpool Wednesday 30th August and Saturday 2nd September 2017

We are so keen on “art” that we had to have two runs to Swanpool to view the Bald Archies exhibition! Actually, the two trips catered for those preferring mid-week or weekend trips. Both groups were able to have lunch at the Swanpool cinema, and coffee at the Benalla Art Gallery. Some keen bloke went on both days!

Altogether, some 56 members were able to enjoy the quirky, often biting, caricatures of well-known figures in Australian politics, sport or society. Alan Lavis

According to Club member Barry O’Connor, who is also the Swanpool event organiser, this year’s exhibition was very successful. Over 3700 visitors came to the combined displays (Bald Archy, Benalla Camera Club and Broken River Artists). The winning entry was “Pocket Rocket” by James Brennan, who has won the award before. The two top “People’s Choice” awards were both from Judy Nadin. “Choir Boy” had 14% of the vote and “Queen of Smarts”had 12%.

Heritage Rally and Market Day, Emerald Bank, Kialla – 3rd September 2017 The weather wasn’t great for the Heritage Rally but there was still a pretty good crowd. Quite a few club members joined the other displays to make for an interesting day.

Apart from our cars, there were motorcycles, trucks, tractors, steam vehicles, stationary engines and other agricultural machinery. It was great to see the 1887 Chandler and Price Co printing press being powered by a stationary

engine, putting designs on paper carry bags.

We didn’t actually have an attendance sheet for the day, but you’ll have an idea of who was there from the photos!

1965 TRIUMPH TR4 roadster – Peter Vibert

The car was imported from the USA 20 or 30 years ago and was shuttled from warehouse to warehouse in Sydney, quietly deteriorating. There was little rust but lots of superficial panel damage. There was no carpet or upholstery and the seats were frames only. It was LHD.

The engine was totally seized. A 1.5m long lever attached to the crank would not move it.

First job after completely dismantling the car was the RHD conversion. This was straightforward as the car was first built in RHD. Buy and fit a new RHD steering rack. Unbolt the pedal box and steering column and re-bolt them on the right hand side. Cut and re-join the metal dash backup panel. (I could have bought a new one). Reverse the timber dashboard and use it as a pattern to cut out a new RH dashboard in MDF and laminate it with a New Guinea Walnut veneer. Buy RH drive longer speedo and tacho drive cables. Rewiring to reach the relocated instruments came later.

The body was now removed from the chassis and all panels went off to Mick and Brook Doherty who, with some expert help from John Truman’s son Michael, repaired and repainted the body and panels.

We completely re-built the engine and converted it to take “A” section belt, alternator, geared starter, new water pump and thermo fan. Also a spin off oil filter and new air cleaners were sourced. The radiator was re-cored.

The stripped chassis was sand blasted and repainted ready for re-assembly.

Ray Mullins put me in touch with Bob Byham in Mount Gambier who supplied a later model gear box with “J” type overdrive. I stripped both the gearbox and overdrive, touching up the synchros in the gearbox and checking the bearings. I hesitated to overhaul the overdrive unit with all its valves, “O” rings, high pressure (400psi) hydraulics, solenoid and seals. With the help of the internet and dozens of photos the task was completed and it is hard to express the joy I experienced when I tried it to find it was perfect.

New brake lines, shoes and linings, discs and pads were fitted and all cylinders re-sleeved or made good. Both broken front springs were replaced as were front shockers, suspension bushes and wheel bearings. The new steering rack was fitted. Back springs were dismantled, de-rusted, greased and re-assembled. Rear lever arm shockers were OK. I fitted new Minator wheels with new tyres. The differential was checked out and the tail shaft balanced. A new exhaust system was made up and fitted.

In the meantime, bumpers and rocker cover had been re-chromed in Albury. All lights had to be replaced as they were American and badly deteriorated. Wiring was altered and extended to cope with such extras as; cruise control, retro bluetooth radio, central locking, backup light, outside temp gauge, overdrive, courtesy lights in cabin, glovebox and boot, headlights left on beeper, alternator, thermo fan and things I can’t think of! Extra fuses and relays were fitted.

Rimmer Brothers in UK have a complete range of parts and were able to supply from stock everything I asked for. These items included:- new door and boot handles and hinges, all of the new brightwork, upholstery, carpets, seat cushions and covers, hood, tonneau, wipers, lights, wheels, engine kit, windows, rubbers, radiator grill, body panel and much more. Delivery was usually within the week.

Now for the next project. Any suggestions?

Shepparton Swap Meet, Showgrounds – 10th September 2017 This year’s swap meet went very smoothly, with an absolute minimum of issues. The weather was excellent, the crowd was as good as last year and the catering was spot-on. We’ll here more details at the club meeting. Thanks to Phame for the photos of club members and other visitors – can you recognise anyone you know in any of them? Brendan Walsh

XR Falcon and XR GT 50th Anniversary, Shepparton Motor Museum – 10th September 2017 I dropped into the Museum after the Swap to check out the XR Falcons and GTs. There was a great turn-out – 22 GTs (in the GT Gold that 98% were painted) and plenty more Falcons. Also attending was Fred Gibson, who drove an XR GT to victory at the Gallaher 500 in 1967. Saturday Social Day, Shepparton – 16th September 2017 A large gathering of members enjoyed the return to the up-dated clubrooms, where an

assortment of tasty casseroles for lunch was enjoyed. It was nice to see the club President and some guests in attendance to enjoy the friendship

and fellowship of the day. The next activity will be on the 21st of October with the theme of “the grand final” so wear

your footy colours if you like. No need to bring food as it will be a pie day, meal supplied. Could attending members please bring along your nomination forms for the Saturday group committee elections in November. Ross Nankivell

The “members” of the Saturday Social Group are asking all members of the GVMVDC to consider joining us on a Saturday morning occasionally when they are able to find the time. We are a friendly group who enjoy socialising with others. Sometimes we have a ‘theme’, when people can bring memorabilia to show and discuss. We have had our numbers go down this year and would like to keep the group going as we find it such an enjoyable part of our club membership. We find it the best way to get to know other members of the bigger club while grouped together in the clubrooms.

Mid-week Coffee Run – Tallis Winery, 20 September 2017

We just had to have a run to Tallis Winery (for coffee of course), and it had to be in the middle of spring. The views were great; as good as they get in our flat Goulburn Valley. The company of course was wonderful, with a great display of classic machinery. Some cars even matched the local colour scheme – green and gold! Alan Lavis

Mid-week Coffee Run, Bruce Hargrave Art Exhibition – Euroa 27 September 2017

A second coffee run for the month? Again, we just had to see Bruce’s watercolour exhibition. I think we all appreciated Bruce’s watercolours, but I’m not aware that anyone pulled out their chequebook (or whatever one does these days). As well as his paintings, Bruce also produced a small book of quirky poems, suitably illustrated.

Most of us enjoyed a picnic lunch in Bruce and Sue’s garden – thank you Bruce and Sue. Alan Lavis

Euroa Show and Shine – Sunday 1st October 2017 The Show and Shine was once again a big show in a great setting on a perfect day! The river-bank setting is ideal but unfortunately not all the vehicles will fit there. Plenty of members attended, including many of our Euroa members working on the gates, etc. Apologies to any other members there that I missed. There were plenty of classics from the 50s to the 70s but only one veteran and about 20 pre-war cars – not nearly enough! Ross Nankivell was there with some stationary engines, located near the truck and tractor displays. Two Teslas were displayed, not too far from the new Tesla charging point. Well done to Graham Tidd and Bill King, who both won trophies.

The 3 rostered ladies are requested to each bring 2 loaves of bread in sandwiches, which will be reimbursed to about $20 each. The Club’s Catering Committee will provide milk and packets of sweet biscuits to supplement the sandwiches. Thank you to the ladies who provide the supper each month - the club members do appreciate it. Please note that you or your spouse can pick up the containers at the Club meeting the month before.

If you can’t make it to your rostered meeting, please contact another rostered member and swap nights. Contact Kris Healey or Anne Podbury for further help.
