History • . . T h e o p e n i n g of the Bishop's L a t i n School is the result of a d e t e r m i n ­

a t i o n of the M o s t Reverend J o h n J. W r i g h t , B ishop of P i t t s b u r g h , to guarantee close to home a so l id g r o u n d i n g i n the classics a n d humani t i es f o r candidates f o r the pr ies thood. I t is the first stage i n the Diocese of Pi t tsburgh's pro jected seminary t r a i n i n g p r o g r a m a n d represents n o t o n l y a react ion to a temporary need f o r vocations, b u t a posi t ive af f i rma­t i o n of the place of the pre- l ibera l ar t disciplines i n the t r a i n i n g of f u t u r e priests. Plans for staff ing the school by the Jesuits were w o r k e d o u t between B ishop W r i g h t a n d Very Reverend J o h n M . Daley, S.J., P r o v i n c i a l of the M a r y l a n d Province of the Society of Jesus, a n d the actual o p e r a t i o n of the school began i n September, 1961 u n d e r the capable d i r e c t i o n o f Father W i l l i a m J . W a l s h , S.J., Headmaster.

Goals • • . T h e objective of the Bishop's L a t i n School is to h e l p fashion intellec­

t u a l l y alert Cathol i c gent lemen of s o l i d m o r a l character w h o w i l l be out­s tanding candidates for the pr ies thood. For this purpose the facul ty strives to p r o m o t e the i n t e l l e c t u a l , m o r a l a n d physical development of each i n d i v i d u a l p u p i l .

T o this end, each student is encouraged to acquire the f o l l o w i n g goals d u r i n g his years at the L a t i n School:

1. A n apprec ia t ion of his personal d i g n i t y a n d his obl igat ions to G o d , his f e l l o w m e n a n d himself .

2. A n elementary u n d e r s t a n d i n g of basic pr inc ip les of language, mathematics a n d r e l i g i o n , a n d of his h is tor ica l a n d c u l t u r a l her i ­tage.

Ratio Studiorum . • . System is the key to Jesuit efforts i n the classroom. T h i s systematized

approach to educat ion stems f r o m the " R a t i o S t u d i o r u m " or Master P la n of Studies for a l i b e r a l educat ion w h i c h is characterized by :

1 . Personal a t t e n t i o n to the i n d i v i d u a l student.

2. T h e d a i l y pre lec t ion , or preparatory e x p l a n a t i o n , g iven by the teacher before every lesson that is assigned to be s tudied o u t of class.

3. Persistent r e v i e w — d a i l y , weekly a n d semester repet i t ions of the mat ter g iven for home study. T h i s is based o n the c o n v i c t i o n that mastery of a subject is the p r o d u c t of practice a n d self-activity.

4. E m u l a t i o n — t h e a t t e m p t to get the best o u t of each boy by means of c o m p e t i t i o n a n d rewards.

5. Close cooperat ion w i t h parents.

6. Insistence o n three hours of study each n i g h t . )

Admission Requirements • General Policy A d m i s s i o n of a candidate t o the Bishop's L a t i n School is

d e t e r m i n e d chiefly by evidence of a t r u l y Catho l i c char­acter, a s trong school record a n d a firm desire, consistent w i t h his age, to become a priest . O t h e r requirements are letters of r e c o m m e n d a t i o n a n d appraisal , a n d performance o n the L a t i n School's entrance examinat ions . Because of the l i m i t e d spaces available at the L a t i n School a n d i n v iew of the large n u m b e r of appl icat ions f r o m q u a l i f i e d students, i t is necessary to make a selection o n an objective basis.

A p p l i c a t i o n Procedure A p p l i c a t i o n f o r the L a t i n School is processed t h r o u g h the Bishop's Office i n the f o l l o w i n g

1. A l l e i g h t h grade students w i t h a present interest i n s t u d y i n g f o r the diocesan pr ies thood s h o u l d a p p l y for the considerat ion of the i r interest to the Office of the Diocesan D i r e c t o r of Vocations w h o

' supplies t h e m w i t h p r e l i m i n a r y a p p l i c a t i o n forms.

2. I n p l a n n i n g the possible placement o f applicants , the Diocesan D i r e c t o r of Vocations makes recommendat ions to the Bishop's Office concerning those applicants w h o seem more l i k e l y to suc­ceed i n a resident m i n o r seminary a n d those others w h o m i g h t p r o f i t f r o m attendance at the L a t i n School.

3. Students recommended f o r the course at the L a t i n School are then referred t o the Headmaster. N o t more t h a n sixty are accepted for the f reshman year.

4. Students f a i l i n g to q u a l i f y i n the compet i t ive examinat ions f o r the L a t i n School r e m a i n e l ig ib le for considerat ion to study else­where for the diocesan pr ies thood.

The Courses . . . R E L I G I O N is m o r e t h a n a class; i t en t i re ly influences the l i f e of

L a t i n School students a n d as such i t is presented i n a l l its richness. Mass is offered each day a n d an occasion for g o i n g to confession dur­

i n g the school day is available da i ly . Each class day begins w i t h the M o r n i n g O f f e r i n g . T h i s is one of the practices of the League of the Sacred H e a r t , an organizat ion a l l the students are expected to j o i n . Each m o n t h the League sponsors special First F r i d a y devotions.

A l l students are r e q u i r e d to make a three-day retreat. F irs t year boys make a retreat at the start of the school year. Second, T h i r d a n d F o u r t h Years make a closed retreat sometime d u r i n g the school year. T h e date w i l l be announced later. A l l years make t w o Days of Recol lec t ion i n each semester.

T o coordinate these activities, a Student Counselor is a p p o i n t e d to care f o r the s p i r i t u a l l i f e of the students a n d is available f o r consul ta t ion at a l l times.

L A T I N is a p r i z e d educat ional t o o l . L a t i n School students devote f o u r years to its study, master ing grammar , reading, t rans la t ing , analyzing — a n d i n the process c o m i n g face to face w i t h the great m e n , the s ignif i ­cant ideas a n d events tha t make u p the c u l t u r a l heritage of R o m a n civ­i l i z a t i o n .

T h e L a t i n course embraces three elements: grammar , compos i t ion , a n d l i t e ra t u re . T h e study of g r a m m a r unfo lds , systematically. Frequent exercises i n c o m p o s i t i o n are i n t e n d e d to develop a w o r k i n g knowledge of the g r a m m a r rules a n d p r o v i d e eff ic ient t r a i n i n g i n logica l t h o u g h t . T r a n s l a t i o n of the classical authors—Caesar, Cicero, a n d Verg i l—cal l s for exactness of t h o u g h t a n d expression w h i l e i t develops the student's taste a n d l i t e rary powers.

G R E E K , l i k e L a t i n , introduces a y o u n g m a n t o one of the sources of his language, c u l t u r e a n d history. I ts h i g h l y inf lected language affords excellent t r a i n i n g i n logical t h o u g h t . Greek is s tudied by a l l students i n sophomore, j u n i o r a n d senior years.

E N G L I S H is made u p of rhetor ic , c o m p o s i t i o n a n d l i t e r a t u r e . Rhe­tor ic deals w i t h the practice of w r i t i n g clear, o r d e r l y a n d f o r c e f u l Eng­l ish , a n d hence looks to c o m p o s i t i o n as its f u l f i l l m e n t . Short exercises i n compos i t ion are g iven d u r i n g every r e c i t a t i o n p e r i o d , a n d a weekly compos i t ion is also r e q u i r e d . L i t e r a t u r e aims to develop l i t e r a r y appreci­a t i o n as far as can be by s t i m u l a t i n g the i m a g i n a t i o n , taste a n d the c r i t i ­cal facul ty .

W i t h o u t r e a d i n g there is l i t t l e progress i n w r i t i n g or l i t e r a r y appreci­a t i o n . For this reason, students are expected to read t w o books d u r i n g each m a r k i n g p e r i o d . T h r o u g h o u t the summer vacat ion, moreover, a l l students w i l l be requested to read at least t h i r t y minutes a day. W i t h o u t reading there is l i t t l e educat ion, less apprec ia t ion a n d very l i t t l e a b i l i t y to express oneself.

H I S T O R Y a n d the h is tor ica l sense are necessary acquisit ions of the l i b e r a l l y educated m a n . T a u g h t as a record of h u m a n experience—the strivings a n d fai lures a n d accomplishments of m e n a n d n a t i o n s — history has an h o n o r e d place i n the L a t i n School p r o g r a m of studies. As a dis­c i p l i n a r y subject, h is tory demands t h a t the student a i m at an accurate grasp of s ignif icant facts. Freshmen at the L a t i n School devote the year of study to A n c i e n t a n d M e d i e v a l H i s t o r y a n d also Civics. Sophomores study A m e r i c a n H i s t o r y , an i n t e g r a l p a r t of w h i c h w i l l be a special course i n the h is tory of the C o m m o n w e a l t h of Pennsylvania. J u n i o r a n d senior years w i l l be devoted to topics i n v o l v i n g home, f a m i l y , society a n d labor .

F R E N C H a n d G E R M A N are available to j u n i o r s a n d seniors. T h e p r i m a r y a i m of the m o d e m language course is to e q u i p the student to read o r d i n a r y prose i n t e l l i g e n t l y , w i t h re lat ive ease a n d speed, a n d w i t h ­o u t excessive dependence o n a d i c t i o n a r y . T h e secondary aims are to t r a i n the student (1) to unders tand the spoken language (2) pronounce i t correctly, a n d (3) to carry o n s imple conversation i n the language.

E L O C U T I O N demands special d r i l l i n g i n vocal expression a n d gesture. I n a l l classes a n d p a r t i c u l a r l y i n the E n g l i s h class, emphasis w i l l be direc ted to proper habits of speech. T h e t r a i n i n g i n e l o c u t i o n w i l l be supplemented by a n o p p o r t u n i t y to par t i c ipa te i n the activit ies of the forensics society a n d i n the w o r k of the dramat i c society.

M A T H E M A T I C S is g i v e n its due place i n the L a t i n School, because of the ro le science has p layed i n p r o m o t i n g the technological changes t h a t have t ransformed the m o d e r n w o r l d . T h e study of mathematics trains the student's logica l facul ty , develops habits of accuracy a n d pre­cision t h r o u g h insistence u p o n exactness of d e f i n i t i o n , precis ion i n the use of m a t h e m a t i c a l t e rminology , accuracy of c o m p u t a t i o n , order of p r o ­cedure a n d neatness of f o r m . T h e mathematics course runs t h r o u g h the first three years a n d is based o n the new syllabus of the School M a t h e ­matics Study G r o u p .

S C I E N C E is one of the i m p o r t a n t parts of a l i b e r a l educat ion . T h e Senior Physics course (PSSC) emphasizes u n d e r s t a n d i n g of basic p r i n ­ciples ra ther t h a n m e m o r i z a t i o n of i n f o r m a t i o n a n d also stresses the ex­p e r i m e n t a l approach to science.

Academic Honors; Prizes and Awards . . . M o n t h l y Honors A t the close of each m a r k i n g p e r i o d , s tudent assemblies

are scheduled i n the course of w h i c h the H o n o r R o l l is read a n d H o n o r cards d i s t r i b u t e d . Students w h o receive a grade of 9 0 % o r above i n a l l the i r subjects m e r i t a t es t imonia l of First H o n o r s . A tes t imonia l of Second H o n o r s is awarded to students receiving 9 0 % or above i n t w o subjects a n d 8 5 % or above i n the r e m a i n i n g subjects. Students w h o achieve marks of 8 0 % or above i n a l l subjects w i t h 2 marks above 8 5 % m e r i t H o n o r a b l e M e n t i o n . A m a r k be low 7 5 % is i n d i c a t i v e of unsatisfactory w o r k .

Yearly Honors G o l d Medals , Silver Medals a n d Premiums are awarded a n n u a l l y to those students w h o shal l lead the i r respec­

tive classes i n scholastic achievement. T o m e r i t the G o l d M e d a l , a student must r a n k first i n his class a n d a t t a i n a general average above 90%. T h e student nex t i n m e r i t , also w i t h a general average above 90%, is awarded the Silver M e d a l . A n y others, whose general averages are above 90%, are considered w o r t h y of H o n o r a b l e M e n t i o n . I n the various subjects, moreover, book p r e m i u m s are awarded to the student whose average above 9 0 % is the highest i n a p a r t i c u l a r subject.

Certification A t t e n t i o n is cal led to the fact t h a t there is a difference between the Passing M a r k a n d the Cer t i f i ca t ing M a r k .

T h e passing m a r k is 70%. T h e Cer t i f i ca t ing M a r k is 8 0 % . T h e Certi f icat­i n g M a r k means that the School is w i l l i n g to recommend the student w i t h this m a r k f o r admission to college.

Yearly A w a r d s \ the end of the scholastic year, a l l fees a n d charges f o r the f o l l o w i n g year are guaranteed one t e n t h of the stu­

dents i n each year's class. One h a l f of these awards are granted s tr ic t ly o n the basis of academic s tanding . Scholarships T h r e e f u l l scholarships, each cover ing t w o years of college a n d t w o years of the M a j o r Seminary, are awarded to the

three members of the senior g r a d u a t i n g class w h o r a n k first, second a n d t h i r d i n scholastic achievement d u r i n g the i r f o u r years at the Bishop's L a t i n School.

These awards are k n o w n as T h e M o s t Reverend J o h n Francis Regis Canevin Scholarship, T h e Most Reverend M i c h a e l O ' C o n n o r Scholarship, a n d T h e M o s t Reverend M i c h a e l Domenec Scho larsh ip—in h o n o r of three o u t s t a n d i n g Bishops o f P i t t s b u r g h .

At tendance W h e n a s tudent is absent, his parents s h o u l d phone the office of the Assistant Headmaster between 9 a n d 11 A . M .

F o l l o w i n g the absence, a s tudent must present a note to the Assistant Headmaster. T h e note is to state the reason f o r the absence, a n d i t is t o be signed by the parent . N o p u p i l may re-enter class w i t h o u t an a d m i t s l ip f r o m the Assistant Headmaster .

P u n c t u a l i t y Classes b e g i n precisely at 8:50 A . M . Latecomers are n o t a l l o w e d to enter class w i t h o u t an a d m i t s l ip f r o m the As­

sistant Headmaster. La te c o m i n g is p u n i s h e d by d e t e n t i o n after school.

Snow Emergency I n the event of emergencies due t o extreme weather. condi t ions , the Diocesan School office w i l l make a

j o i n t announcement w i t h the P u b l i c Schools over local r a d i o a n d tele­v i s i o n stations i n d i c a t i n g whether or n o t school w i l l be i n session. I f the announcement is tha t there w i l l be n o school, the L a t i n School w i l l n o t have school. I f the announcement is t h a t there w i l l be school, the L a t i n School w i l l also have school. D o n o t phone the school.
