U.S. loses confidence(Late 60’s early 70’s) Weakened originally by Tet Offensive in 1968.
-1,100 Americans died. The U.S realized that no part of South Vietnam
was secure. 3 out of 4 Americans disagreed with President
Johnsons conduct of war. Because of this he did not seek re-election.
Kennedy then took presidency, after his assignation the U.S was devastated.
Nixon was then President from 1969-1974.
Nixon’s affect on U.S Devised Vietnamization (turning over the
fighting to South Vietnam-pulling U.S troops out)
Secretly planned to expand war into Cambodia.
Air raid bombing brought Cambodia into war- U.S outraged.
Media was portraying information differently than the government which was a concern for the citizens.
Kent State/ Pentagon Paper Kent State- Article Kent State student set ROTC building on
fire, and also shootings that killed 4 and injured 9. Due to the outrage of war.
Pentagon Papers- New York Times published secret government documents that showed that the government misled the people.
Results of the Vietnam War 1970 Nixon ordered US troops out of Vietnam Opposition to the war grew rapidly due to the media 58000 us lives lost and 150,000 wounded January 23rd 1973 US and North Vietnam came to a
cease fire agreement Vietnam War veterans recieved a cold welcome
when they returned home Many Americans hated the way the war had ended Exposer to Agent Orange, a harmful chemical used
as a weapon, left many veterans permanently disabled

Soviet Union and China First president to visit the People’s
Republic of China Signed two nuclear arms control treaties
with the Soviet Union, these were the first nuclear arms control treaties between Cold War combatans
Watergate Scandal Began in 1972, when there was a break-in at the Democratic
National Committee headquarters located at the Watergate office complex in Washington, DC
5 men were arrested for breaking and entering into the headquarters The money that was found on the burglars was connected to a slush
fund that was used by the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, a fundraising group for Nixon with his campaign
Evidence mounted up over the next few weeks about the scandal which involved Nixon’s staff that was provided by former staff members
Revealing President Nixon had a tape recording system in his office that recorded many conversations showing him trying to cover up the break-in
Eventually Nixon knew he was going to be impeached and a strong chance of conviction, he resigned his presidency on August 9, 1974
How the American People responded The Watergate Scandal was an event that had a huge
impact on how the American people viewed the government
Many people lost faith in the government, having no trust after what Nixon did
Not being able to trust your own president affected people on not even voting at all during the future elections
Next few Presidents were under pressure from all the distrust the people had with Nixon following the Watergate scandal

Arab Oil Embargo On October 16 1973, the OPEC (Organization of Arab Petroleum
Exporting Countries) announced to raise the price of Oil by 70% to $5.11 a barrel
President Nixon 3 days later requested congress to send 2.2 billion in aid to Israel to prevent Israel's collapse
This decision led to countries announcing to embargo all oil shipments to the US like Libya, Saudi Arabia, and other OPEC states the next day
Due to the embargo, the OPEC forced the oil companies to increase payments by a lot
Price of oil in the US quadrupled to $12 a barrel by 1974 By February 1974, around 20 percent of gas stations had
completely run out of fuel Having a huge impact on all of the US in a negative way with jobs
such as truck drivers and so on

back on November 14, 1970 after a loss to East Carolina 17-14
Only 2 miles away from the airport, the plane crashed into a hillside in Kenova, West Virginia killing all 75 people on board devastating the people throughout the country in sports

mini dresses and maxi dresses Formal wear: maxi dresses, even
trousers, or halter neck cat suits Bright light weight clothing became
popular because of the hippie movement
Men wore bell bottoms and trouser suits and platform shoes
Fads Pet rocks were popular among children
and came in small boxes with hay at the bottom
Rubik’s cube was also popular at this time
Jogging became popular not only as a sport but as a fashion, people wore jogging suits as a casual day-to-day clothing
Dynasties The Montreal Canadians were six time Stanley
cup champions, dominating hockey during the 70’s
The Pittsburgh Steelers were four time Super
Bowl champions making the playoffs every year
UCLA Bruins mens basketball won five national championships and made seven final four appearances
Hank Aaron Major league baseball player for the Milwaukee
Brewers and Atlanta Braves from 1955-1975 He was a 25 time all star player which is the
record to the day Most famous for breaking Babe Ruths home run
record with 715 on April 8, 1974 which is regarded as the most prestigious accomplishment in American sports
His record was broken by Barry Bonds in 2007 but we all know that is now a tainted record

Music Disco is the genre of music that is mostly
associated with the 70’s Disco became popular during the middle of
the decade but the 70’s are also when the emergence of hard rock came along
Bees Gees was a disco soundtrack that hit during 1977 and was apart of the best selling album of all time called Saturday Night Fever until Michael Jackson’s thriller broke that record in 1983
The Beatles Rock and roll band from 1960-1970 Most commercially successful and critically acclaimed
acts in the history of popular music Made up of 4 members: John Lennon, Ringo Starr,
George Harrison, Paul McCartney Hold the record for most number one hits on the Hot 100
chart with 20 7 Grammy awards, 6 diamond platinums, 45 gold albums They held down the spot of number 1 album 174 weeks

Energy Crisis President Carter –president at time of Energy
Crisis. Domestic Oil production was at a low. U.S realized how dependent they were on
foreign oil. Oil and gas diminish as demand grows. Emergency natural gas act- equally distribute
oil- act was passed in one week. Fireside chats- helped to inform the people-
promote energy conservation.
