Park on February 13 will offer a few extras for the participants. Returning by popular deTnand is video taping. The Couples Relay, held this past December 19, was video taped and then viewed at the Lantern Pub in Mahopac after our last meeting. Everyone who saw the tape loved it. In fact it was rumored that some club members have hired agents to negotiate with the various shoe and running apparel manufacturers; so extensive was the coverage. A sequel must naturally follow. The tape will be aired on a four foot screen at the Lantern Pub, following the February 14 meeting. Also...Taconic Road Runners Club enters the computer era. John Lewis and a computer sciences friend of his, Phil Thomas, have de signed a program that will score races by com p u t e r . T r i a l r u n s i n d i c a t e t h a t w e c a n p o s t the results, including separate print out of age group rankings, within 15 minutes of the completion of the race. And, every runner will receive a copy of the results to take home. We hope to see you there; bring your f r i e n d s . A n e n t r y f o r m i s i n c l u d e d w i t h i n . MEETING MEETING FEBRUARY 14, 8:00 PM LANTERN PUB, ROUTE 6, MAHOPAC. WELCOME ALL!! Time to Renew! Renewals cheerfully accepted Don't forget to renew your membership. SMITH & NAUGHTON WIN WINTER 1 For those who love to hate t h e h i l l s o f F . D . R . P a r k , r e joice! We accidentally found a way to make them a little harder. When the course for this years Winter Series was laid out two factors decided the change in our usual 5k loop. Because the registration and award ceremony were to be held at the Yorktown Jewish Center, on Route 202 opposite the bus entrance to the park, we nee ded a start and finish close to the Yorktown J.C.C.. And we assumed (the worst) that the back, unpaved road section would be under snow and ice. Therefore we laid out a straight shot, from the bus entrance to the pool parking lot, around it and back to s t a r t . T h e r e s u l t i n g t i m e s were a little slower but the change was enjoyable...not to mention the warmth of the cen ter before and after the race. Anthony Smith had things pretty much to himself as he pulled away from Robert Vogel after 1^5 miles to cruise to a 20 second margin with a 15:25 victory -considerably off his 14:51 clocking which he recor d e d i n h i s p h o t o fi n i s h d u e l with Elliot Michael during the Couples Relay on December 19. Kathy Naughton had things a bit harder as she out dis tanced Joanne Portaro, 18:48 to 19:04. cont'd pg 2

TIPS FORWINTER RUNNING

( 5 )

Cold weather running may present unique problemswhich range from being merely inconvenient or uncomfortable to being dangerous or even life-threatening. A fewsimple precautions, however, will allow the runner to gothrough winter safely, healthfully, and comfortably.

Proper clothing can guard against the peril ofh y p o t h e r m i a ( l i f e - t h r e a t e n i n g d r o p i n b o d ytemperature), and allow the runner to go in comfort.

a. Several layers of light clothing will trap air betweenthem, and provide better insulation than one thick garment.

b. Cotton is recommended next to the skin to absorbsweat which might form and then freeze. Wool on theoutside will draw dampness from the body and still retainits insulating properties. Avoid synthetic fibers.

c. Up to 70% of body heat is lost through your head andhands. Wool mittens and a wool ski hat are essential.

d. Apply DermaShield to avoid irritation and chafing of theunderarms, nipples, crotch and other parts of the bodysusceptible to winter dampness and rubbing from excesscold weather gear.

Exposed skin and Hps should be protected againstthe cold, wind and ice.

a. Frostbite (destruction of skin cells) is caused by thecombined affects of wind and cold upon exposed skin.See Equivalency Table below.

b. A danger sign of frostbite is hard skin which is white inappearance...like a frozen piece of meat.

c. Apply DermaShield to exposed skin to help protectagainst frostbite, as well as chapped lips and damagedskin from the harsh effects of winter.

Running outings should be adjusted according tow e a t h e r c o n d i t i o n s .

a. Snow and icy conditions present dangers from trafficand hidden hazzards. Stay off busy roads and unevent e r r a i n .

b. Plot your course so that the wind is against you on theway out. Otherwise, by the time you return, sweat will havealready formed, causing your body to chill if you must facethe wind coming back.

c. Summer mileage in winter conditions will exact agreater toll from your body. Ease up and go into Springfresh and injury free.

d. Wear light colored clothes on dark mornings andevenings. When snow is on the ground however, wear darkt o c o n t r a s t t h e w h i t e .

e. In case of heavy snowfall, cross-country skiing maybe a good training alternative to running, offering many ofthe same benefits as long distance workouts.

If the ice, wind, and cold do take their toil, commonsense approaches should quickly restore you to toprunning condition.

a . Upon the firs t warn ing s igns o f f ros tb i te orhypothermia...stop, find warm refuge, and dry off. If symptoms are severe or persist call your doctor Immediately.

b. Running on ice or snow, against the wind, or whileweighted down with extra gear, may cause extraordinarymuscle strain or fatigue. Stretching after the run, followedby a hot shower or bath will ease the way for your nextouting.

c. After you run repair chapped, worn skin and restorevitality to your complexion with DermaShield. Greasless andeasy to apply, DermaShield is specially formulated topromote healing of winter damaged skin.

Follow these running tips and you'll go through wintersafely, healthfully and comfortably.

Place an invisible barrierbetween your skin and theelements. DermaShield is aprotective creme speciallyformulated by a runner forr u n n e r s . M a d e w i t hVitamins A, D, E and Paba,DermaShield is good for yourskin while it offers protection from the harsh effectsof wind, cold and frostbite.

Make DermaShield a regular part of your winter training regimen.

Many clubs, Allover,USA: A Grand Prix of yearly races seems to be popular with anincreasing number of running clubs. There are'many systems of scoring such a protracted event; one common element is that they involve several races over several months. The emphasis is on consistancy in perfromance and participation. Anyone interested inworking on a Grand Pr ix compet i t ion wri te to us.
