And it wasn't just locals either. Ross Grasso drove up from the Bronx sporting a T-shirt from New York Road Runners Club Snow Flake Run, cancelled the day before, an irony that drew a few chuckles. Because the upper pool parking lot had just been plowed that morning it was too dangerous to run on. Some quick adjustments were made and the race directors wheeled an alternative, mini loop around the small parking lot below the larger one we usually do. The result was a 4.4 mile offering which produced P.R.'s for everyone. Although the footing was tough going in some places there were no spills or injuries, except one muscle strain, reported. The men's race was a close one. Paul Piliero, Mike Cosset and Gary Steinel ran side by side for most of the way until Paul opened up during the last mile and pulled away from Mike and Gary to win in a 23:52 clocking, with Cosset and Steinel 9 and 14 seconds behind, respectively. Gary Steinel continues to improve; he is a big guy. T o b e a b l e t o r u n w i t h C o s s e t a n d P i l i e r o s h o w s t r e m e n d o u s strength when you consider what he gives away in weight. Big people sometimes talk about having weight handicaping at some events to compensate. You never hear that from Gary; he knows that extra size and the accompanying weight are the breaks of the sport. If we ever do hold a weight handicapped event Gary will win easily. The women's race saw Sigrun Cora Denny win with a 30:19 with a 33rd place overall finish. Ellen Anja Denny made it one two for the family with a 31:20 and 41st overall placing. Peg mimno ran a cautious 31:40 to round out the top three, fi n i s h i n g 4 3 r d o v e r a l l . Among the close battles in the age groups was in the Women's 30-39 as K.B. Gebhardt and Betsy Feuer fought for second place with K.B. finishing 4 seconds ahead of Betsy, By far the most competitive age groups are consistently: Men's 30-39 with 20 runners who placed four in the top five finishers; Men's 40-49 also numbering 20 runners and placing 2 in the top ten; Women's 30-39 with 10 runners including two among the top five female finishers. , , ^ i i\ (cont'd, pg. 3, col. l; Has your Membership expired? The computerized scoring went perfectly; our thanks toJohn Lewis and Phil Thomas for providing that nice touch. The Video Taping, courtesy of the Lantern Pub, Mahopac, alsowent well and was shown the next evening at the Lantern Pubafter the meeting. Highlight of the viewing was the specialsound track provided by Terry Horton. Terry played his version of that famous winter ballad, "Ode to a Snow Plow."I t was a lovely instrumental played with a borrowed shovelwhich Terry scraped across the road as he cleared a path forthe runners in and a round the fin ish l ine . The resu l t wasprovocative musical score which promises to be a TRRC classic, complete with a melodic grating throughout and punctuatedby thumps and bangs as Morton's shovel plays its way acrossthe frozen snowscape. A virtuoso performance.

Last issue, with a pressing deadline, I abbreviated my editor ial to a succint "THANKS," So, I fulfil led my l i teralcharter and you were spared my literal lunacy. Come tothink of it, you will be spared this month also as I am going to expand on my last editorial and tell you to whom Iw a s d i r e c t i n g m y b l u n t r e m a r k .

Fi rst are the obvious people who have held d ist inct c lubpositions. Thanks to the Lenahan family for their hardwork in maintaining the membership roles and doing the mailings for all these years. Next is Harry Neeson for hist i r e l e s s w o r k a s e d i t o r o f t h e n e w s l e t t e r .

There is another group of people who, because they holdno elected posts, often go unnoticed for their efforts at club activities. These arethe people who show up at races to help without being asked; they are also the oneswho come to all the meetings and participate in the functional process of the clubwithin the the running community. They give our club its identity. Here "they" are.My apologies to anyone lef t out .

Melanie Mulvihill is probably the most unsung club volunteer; she has done almostevery possible chore one could perform for us. Last summer, for example, Melaniewas posted at a remote turn on the Biathlon course, away from all the action; calledupon at the last minute, she stayed there until both men's and women's races passed by.
