SERIES HISTORY Duke and Clemson are set to meet for the 61st time in program history. The series is one of the tightest in the ACC, with the Tigers holding a slight one game edge, up 28-27-5. The two teams have met five times in the ACC Tournament twice, with Duke winning two and Clemson taking three.

THOR’S HAMMER Sophomore striker Thorleifur Ulfarsson has started his sophomore campaign much like his freshman season, recording a hat trick against Howard and nine goals and one assist for 19 points in seven games. Ulfarsson finished his four game preseason with two goals and an assist, notching five points over the first three games. The Kopavogur, Iceland native now has 15 goals and three assists for 31 points over 20 combined games between the 2020-21 regular season and 2021 preseason and regular season.

YOUTH MOVEMENT Duke has been paced by strong performances from the freshman class, who has stepped up to support a young starting lineup. The Blue Devils have gotten 21 of the team’s 70 points (30%) from freshman, with Shakur Mohammed leading the way with eight. Felix Barajas is next with seven, Ruben Mesalles with five and Jai Bean has one.

LAST TIME OUT The Blue Devils saw an end to its six-game win streak, falling in a tight 3-2 decision at No. 13 Pittsburgh. Sophomore Thorleifur Ulfarsson scored for the fifth game in a row and has scored in six of seven games this year. Ulfarsson also assisted on another goal, bringing his season total to nine goals, one assist and 19 points in seven games this season. Sophomore Peter Stroud scored his first collegiate goal, set up by Ulfarsson in the 89th minute. Sophomore Lewis McGarvey and freshman Ruben Mesalles registered assists on Ulfarsson’s goal. McGarvey remains the lone Blue Devil to start all 11 games this season.

DEFENDING KOSKINEN The Blue Devils went 1-6-2 at home in 2020-21 but have started 6-1-0 this season. Under John Kerr, Duke is 97-40-22 at home. The Blue Devils’ best season was 2009, going 12-1-0 at home.

AT HOME IN THE ACC Duke is 25-25-10 in ACC regular season and tournament home games since 2008 for a .500 win percentage.

Mesalles is a midfielder by trade, who has been moved around the lineup quite a bit and played some defense in the preseason and regular season. The Longboat, Fla. native has provided the Blue Devils flexibility and the ability to learn new roles on a whim. Mesalles made waves with the first multi goal performance of the year, scoring two goals in a 4-2 win at UNC-Wilmington on Aug. 14, playing 57 minutes. The Longboat, Fla., native opened his regular season with an assist on a Miguel Ramirez goal in the 3-0 win over Liberty and followed it up with his first collegiate goal in a 1-0 win at Michigan. Mesalles now has five points in 10 games to rank fifth on the team in total points. CHASING HISTORY Blue Devils senior goalkeeper Eliot Hamill is putting together a season for the books and will look to write his name in the record books. Hamill (5 shutouts), needs two more to move into a 10-way tie for 11th on the single season shutout list.

KING FELIX The Blue Devils have gotten a huge boost in the offense from freshman Felix Barajas, who has three goals, while being a force off the bench. The Los Angeles, Calif., native earned the first multi-goal game of the season and nearly pulled off a hat trick, as his pressure forced an own goal by Merrimack. He followed that up with a goal against Howard.

ACE OF THE ACC Duke senior goalkeeper and team captain Eliot Hamill has been a force all season and the work has paid off, as he has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week three times, on September 7, 21 and 28. Hamill earned his first honor following a two-save shutout of Michigan in Ann Arbor and added two more with a six save shutout of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a five save shutout of Syracuse. Hamill began the season with a 285:31 shutout streak and has made 37 saves over nine games this season.

LINE IT UP Ian Murphy is set to return as the elder statesman of the defense. Murphy will be joined by All-ACC Freshman Team honoree Lewis McGarvey, as well sophomores Antino Lopez, Amir Daley and freshman Ruben Mesalles, who will see time on defense and as a midfielder this season. After a starting the 2020-21 with a very young core, the Blue Devils midfield returns with much more experience in 2021. Standout freshman from last season like Peter Stroud and Nick Pariano are set to return and will be joined by more talented youngsters like Shakur Mohammed, Mesalles, Felix Barajas, Sebastian Docters and Luke Thomas. Veterans Santa Ihara, Conor Kelly and Cameron Kerr will all see time rotating in and out of the lineup to add to rapidly improving group. Thorleifur Ulfarsson returns to anchor a hungry goal scoring unit up front, as the team’s leading scorer in just nine games last year. Ulfarsson will see plenty of time with junior Scotty Taylor, as well Miguel Ramirez, Jai Bean and Krew Verratti.

TALE OF THE TAPE Clemson heads to Durham in a tie for first place in the Atlantic Division, checking in at 9-3-0 and 3-2-0 in the ACC. The Panthers enter with a record of 7-3-0 and 3-1-0 in the ACC, ranking No. 13 in the nation. The Tigers are coming off an ACC loss, falling 2-0 to Notre Dame on Oct. 9. Friday’s matchup will mark of the top ACC goalkeeper showdowns of the season, when Duke senior netminder Eliot Hamill will matchup against Clemson’s George Marks. Marks is 8-2-0 with a .788 save percentage, tallying four shutouts. On offense, the Tigers are led by Isaiah Reed, who has a team leading six goals and 12 points. Mohamed Seye also has 10 points on four goals and two assists. Head Coach Mike Noonan is in his 12th season with the Tigers and angling to bring the team back to the national championship game, like he did in 2015.

MEET THE NEWCOMERS Several newcomers have joined Duke soccer this season and many bring interesting family connections to the Blue Devils. Freshman goalie Grant Farley is the grandson of Hall of Fame baseball player, two-time World Series Champion and 18-time All-Star Brooks Robinson. Freshman midfielder Ruben Mesalles’s father played for the Spanish National Futsal Team, while his grandfather was a successful goalkeeper in La Liga, the top league in Spain for Levantine and Oviedo. Graduate student Mateo Cornejo comes from a prominent coaching family, as his godfather, George Tarantini was the men’s soccer head coach at NC State from 1986-2010, while his father Jose was a former assistant at NC State and is the current head coach at St. David’s School in North Carolina.

EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM The Blue Devils are hoping to generate positive momentum from the start of the game, as it has paid dividends all season long. Goals from five different players; Conor Kelly, Nick Pariano, Ruben Mesalles, Thorleifur Ulfarsson (three) and Shakur Mohammed (twice) have kickstarted the offense in each game. The Blue Devils are now 8-1-0 when scoring first. Against both ranked teams in the preseason; No. 25 Coastal Carolina and No. 24 High Point, the Blue Devils also scored first, with goals from Thorleifur Ulfarsson and Miguel

SCORING PUNCH The Blue Devils will be looking for someone to aid Thor Ulfarsson, who stepped into the lineup and scored four goals in nine games as a freshman and opened his sophomore campaign with nine goals in seven games. Ulfarsson scored 21% of the team’s 19 goals in 2020-21, but the Blue Devils have already spread the wealth on offense, with 12 players scoring at least one goal and 14 with at least one point. Ulfarsson and Felix Barajas have started the season off with big scoring outputs, with a hat trick by Ulfarsson headlining his team leading nine, while Barajas has three.

BUILDING TOUGHNESS The Blue Devils put a lot of pressure on underclassmen to step up and eat minutes in the 2020-21 season and the move is paying off, as five of the top six in total minutes are back for the 2021 season with a plethora of experience.Senior Ian Murphy is the one upperclassman of the bunch, who led the team with 1,627 minutes as a junior last season. Rising sophomores Peter Stroud, Antino Lopez, Lewis McGarvey and Amir Daley all come with at least 15 games played and 1,200 minutes of experience, with a large chunk coming against the challenging and experienced ACC.

AIR MCGARVEY Sophomore defensive midfielder Lewis McGarvey is back and will return to play a key role as Duke’s best player in the air. His ability to win aerial duels was critical in the Blue Devils’ defense through the middle of the field and especially on set pieces. McGarvey made Elon pay on a set piece, burying a goal in a 3-1 win over the Phoenix on Oct. 5, and added an assist on a header against No. 13 Pitt.

WATCH THE CARDS The Blue Devils struggled with the bookings in the early go of the season, with several yellow cards being handed out across the preseason and regular season, but have turned it around in recent games, with only one in the last two games.. The Blue Devils combined for seven yellow cards across the UNC-Wilmington and High Point preseason games and recorded 23 in 11 regular season games, placing them third in the ACC and 46th in the NCAA.

KERR REACHES DOUBLE CENTURY WINS MARK A win over NC State on Sept. 26, 2020 was the 200th of head coach John Kerr’s career. He is the 51st active coach to reach the benchmark and the second Blue Devil men’s soccer coach to reach it. Kerr earned his 100th win as the Blue Devil leader in 2017 with a 2-1 victory over FIU. Now in his 14th season, Kerr is one of two Duke coaches in program history to win 100 career games from the Duke sideline. Kerr’s mentor and head coach, John Rennie, won 410 games in his 29 seasons at Duke and still ranks 22nd all-time across all three divisions with 454 wins overall. He is ninth among Division I coaches. Kerr’s current .563 win percentage at Duke (131-98-32) is fourth among Duke coaches with Rennie leading the way at .706. Roy Skinner (1966-76; 71-45-5) is second at .607, while inaugural head coach K.C. Gerard (1935-48; 41-27-10) finished with a .589 win percentage.

SUCCESS IN NUMBERS Following the graduation of goalies Will Pulisic and Michael Reis, the goalie position is up for grabs, with a talented three-man unit each seeing time during the preseason. All-three goalies; Eliot Hamill, JT Harms and Grant Farley, earned a combined shutout in an Aug. 17 win at No. 24 High Point. Farley and Hamill in particular had to be sharp, with both making key saves to preserve the shutout.

All three goalies could see time this season, with Hamill seeing the bulk of the action. Hamill started his season with five shutouts in six games against Liberty, Michigan, No. 6 Virginia Tech, No. 16 North Carolina and Syracuse, while Harms has two shutouts against Merrimack and Howard to start his year.

DUKE’S INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR The Blue Devils feature a diverse roster with four foreign countries, one British territory and 11 different states represented. Now residing in the United States, both Conor Kelly and Scotty Taylor were born in England and freshman Peter Stroud lived in England for the past few years.

FAMILY SUCCESS ON THE SOCCER FIELD Peter Stroud’s brother, Jared, is a current member of the Austin FC in MLS. He was acquired by Austin FC in the expansion draft in December. Jared played 20 games for New York Red Bulls, contributing two assists. He was a standout at Colgate University and was the No. 83 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2018 MLS Superdraft.

ALL IN THE KERR FAMILY In his 14th season on the sideline, head coach John Kerr has the thrilling opportunity to share it with his son Cameron as he begins his junior campaign as a Blue Devil. Cameron played his club soccer with NC Fusion Academy and helped lead Chapel Hill High School to the state finals as a sophomore. While Cameron dons the Duke Blue, his twin sister Alex is wearing black and gold as a junior at Vanderbilt.
