    The Games of the XXIVth Olympiadbegan September 17, 1988 with galaOpening Ceremonies at Seoul'sOlympic Stadium. They were the resultof seven years and five months ofpreparations.Staged amidst some 100,000 specta-tors - and with billions of peoplewatching by broadcast worldwide -the Opening Ceremonies were packedwith touching moments.After parading by boat on the HanRiver, the Dragon Drum Processioncame into view at 10:30 a.m. Dancersperformed rhythmic dance harmoniz-ing ancient times and global solidarity,while a mass game enhanced thefestived mood.The official events of the OpeningCeremonies started when 13,304athletes and officials from 160countries marched in.The SLOOC President Park Seh-jikspoke to the crowd, and IOCPresident Juan Antonio Samaranchdelivered a welcoming address.President Roh Tae Woo then declaredthe Seoul Olympic Games to be open.The sacred flame, carried from theTemple of Hera in Olympia, Greece,ignited the torch in the Main Stadium'shuge cauldron.The spectators were treated to sevenprograms: "A Great Day," "Chaos,""Beyond All Barriers," "Silence," "NewSprouts," "Harmony" and "One World."The vocal group Koreana sang theOlympic song "Hand in Hand" to bringdown the curtain on the OpeningCeremonies.Perfect facilities, fine weather anddedicated service by volunteerworkers combined to produce a verysuccessful 24th Games; during 16days of heated competition, athletesshattered 33 world and 227 Olympicrecords.

    9/17Five official sports and taekwondo(a demonstration sport) were stagedon the first day of the Games. With 12gold medals at stake, 441 boxers from106 countries entered into competi-tion at Chamshil Students' Gymna-sium. Byun Jong-il of Korea won thefirst round in bantamweight on points.In the women's platform diving prelim-inary, 12 divers, including ChenXiaodan of the People's Republic ofChina, qualified for the finals.In basketball at Chamshil Gymnasium,the People's Republic of Chinaoutpointed Egypt, 98:84, while Brazileasily defeated Canada.In the Group A preliminary of men'svolleyball at Hanyang UniversityGymnasium, Korea lost to Sweden 2:3after a fierce battle of three hours and10 minutes. In the men's Group Bpreliminary, the Netherlands defeatedFrance.

    Football preliminaries were held atKwangju, Pusan, Taejon and Taegu,spreading the Olympic festivalatmosphere all across the country. InPusan, the Federal Republic ofGermany defeated the People'sRepublic of China, 3:0, while inKwangju, Italy outclassed Guatemala,5:2. In Taegu, Sweden and Tunisiafought to a 2:2 draw, as did Iraq andZambia in Taejon.In the taekwondo demonstrationcompetition, Korea captured threegolds and one silver in four weightclasses. Gold medalists includedChoo Nan-yool in the women'sflyweight division, Ha Tae-kyung in themen's flyweight division, and ChungKook-hyun in the men's welterweightdivision. In the women's welterweightclass, American Arlene Limas won thegold and Kim Ji-sook of Koreabrought home the silver.

In women's air rifle, Irina Chilova,an unheralded competitor from theU.S.S.R. captured the gold; her victoryceremony was televised.     In the men's 200-meter freestyle final,unheralded Australian swimmerDuncan Armstrong stroked his way toa world record of 1:47.25, winning agold medal coveted by world-classstars Michael Gross of the FederalRepublic of Germany and MatthewBiondi of the United States.Kristin Otto of the German DemocraticRepublic brought home the gold in thewomen's 100-meter freestyle to beginher medal collection. Janet Evansgave the United States its first gold inswimming by winning the women's400-meter individual medley.In springboard diving, GregoryLouganis of the United Statessustained a frightening but minorinjury when he hit the springboard.Cha Young-chul of Korea captured thesilver in men's free rifle, prone.In a basketball preliminary, Koreadefeated Australia, 91:55; in volleyball,Korea defeated Brazil, 3:2.Wrestlers competed in five events.In taekwondo demonstration matches,Chinese Taipei took the gold in thewomen's fin class final. In women'slightweight, the United States placedfirst and Denmark second.In the football preliminary, Zambiaachieved a 4:0 upset victory over Italy.Third-day events comprised 12 sportsand produced seven gold medals.

    9/20Competition on the fourth dayinvolved 18 sports, and athletes tookpart in nine finals.Despite the head injury he sufferedwhile diving from the springboard, LosAngeles double gold medalist GregoryLouganis managed to claim two goldsagain.Naim Suleymanoglu, a Bulgarian wholives in Turkey, rewrote the recordbook six times (in snatch, clean andjerk, and total) in the 60-kilogramweight category of the weightliftingcompetition.In the final of the men's gymnasticsteam competition, the U.S.S.R.earned the gold with an incredibleseven perfect 10s. In 74-kilogramGreco-Roman wrestling, Kim Young-nam defeated heavy favorite DaouletTourlykhanov of the U.S.S.R. to givethe host country its initial touch ofgold. In 52-kilogram Greco-Roman,compatriot Lee Jae-suk won thebronze.Weightlifter Angel Guenchev ofBulgaria established a world record inthe 67.5-kilogram category. In themen's 100-meter butterfly, AnthonyNesty of Surinam captured the gold; inthe 400-meter individual medley,Tamas Darnyi of Hungary, despiteblindness in one eye, set a worldrecord to win a gold medal. TheUnited States earned its thirdswimming gold by winning the men's4x200 meters relay.In women's gymnastics team compe-tition, Elena Chouchounova poweredthe U.S.S.R. to victory. Janet Evans ofthe United States won the women's400-meter freestyle with a worldrecord, and compatriot MatthewBiondi finished first in the men's 100-meter freestyle, both to take theirsecond gold medal.Wrestler Kim Sung-moon of Koreacaptured the silver in the Greco-Roman 68-kilogram class; Kim Sang-kyu, also of Korea, won a bronze inthe Greco-Roman 82-kilogram class.

    The bantamweight boxing contestbetween Byun Jong-il of Korea andAlexandar. Hristov of Bulgaria wascontroversial. Disagreement over thedecision sparked a protest and unrulybehavior by the Korean coach andworkers.Korea's 2:1 football loss to Argentinaexcluded the host team from theeight-squad play off lineup. But theKorean men's handball team thrilledspectators at Suwon Gymnasium witha dramatic come-from-behind winover the German DemocraticRepublic.Mitko Grablev of Bulgaria wasstripped of his 56-kilogram classweightlifting gold medal after hetested positive for drugs.

    9/23The seventh day featured 16 sports,with a dozen gold medals to bedecided in five sports. Athleticscompetition with a total of 42 medalsat stake, started with seven events.The first gold medal in athletics camein the women's marathon. Rosa Motaof Portugal finished first in the relative-ly slow race, followed by AustralianLisa Martin and Kathrin Doerre of theGerman Democratic Republic.In the men's 20-kilometer walk,Czechoslovakia captured the gold; thesilver went to the German DemocraticRepublic and the bronze to Italy.In men's shot put, the GermanDemocratic Republic won the gold,the United States finished second andSwitzerland was third.The French fencers finished first inmen's sabre. In shooting, the U.S.S.R.won the gold in men's rapid fire pistol.In men's running game target, Norwayfinished first, followed by the People'sRepublic of China and the U.S.S.R.The German Democratic Republicswimmers earned gold medals both inthe men's 400-meter freestyle andwomen's 100-meter butterfly, whilefirst place in the men's 200-meterbreaststroke went to Hungary (GreatBritain was second and Spain third).Bulgaria won the gold in the women's100-meter breaststroke, and U.S.swimmers won the men's 4x100meters freestyle relay.The day's spotlight was focused onthe individual all around contestbetween gymnastics superstars ElenaChouchounova of the U.S.S.R. andDaniela Silivas of Rumania. Thecontest was close until the final event,the horse vault, in which Silivasscored 9.95, but Chouchounova aperfect 10.

    Athletes competed in 16 sports, eightof which had finals with a total of 30golds.The day saw two world records andthe emergene of a five-time goldmedalist.In the men's 100 meters final, thefocus of worldwide attention, BenJohnson of Canada finished first in9.79, and Carl Lewis of the UnitedStates came in second at 9.92.Jackie Joyner-Kersee of the UnitedStates won the women's heptathlon,finishing first in the 800 meters andestablishing a world record of 7,291points.In gymnastics, Park Jong-hoon madethe day bright for Korea when he wona bronze in the horse vault, scoring aperfect 10 on his second try.Vladimir Artemov of the U.S.S.R. wontwo golds in parallel bars and horizon-tal bar; with golds in team competitionand individual all around, Artemovemerged as a quadruple goldmedalist.Swimmer Kristin Otto of the GermanDemocratic Republic finished first inthe women's 4x100 meters medleyrelay and became a five-time medalist.Angel Guenchev of Bulgaria testedpositive for durgs, which cost him thegold medal in the 67.5-kilogramweightlifting. Earlier, Mitko Grablev,also a Bulgarian lifter, was stripped ofhis gold medal in the 56-kilogramclass for doping.

    9/25On Chusok, Korea's most celebratednational holiday (equivalent toThanksgiving Day), a total of 25 goldmedals, including five in athletics andseven in rowing, were awarded.In judo competition, Kim Jae-yup ofKorea defeated Kevin Asano of theUnited States for a gold medal in theextra lightweight class. Kristin Otto ofthe German Democratic Republiccontinued her spectacular feats ofswimming; she tallied her sixth goldmedal in the women's 50-meterfreestyle, defeating world recordholder Yang Wenyi of the People'sRepublic of China with a finish of25.49.Matthew Biondi of the United Stateswon the gold in the men's 400-metermedley relay, emerging as a five-timemedalist.In athletics competition, FlorenceGriffith Joyner of the United Stateswon the women's 100 meters in 10.54.In the men's 400-meter hurdles, anevent dominated by Edwin Moses ofthe United States for the past 12years, Andre Phillips, also of theUnited States, earned the gold.

In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Roger Kingdom of theUnited States won with a time of12.98 to hold onto his Olympic title.Officials needed photo-finish to deter-mine the results of the 82-kilometerwomen's individual road race after 45cyclists reached the finish line almostsimultaneously.Eventually, the gold went to MoniqueKnol of the Netherlands, the silver toJutta Niehaus of the Federal Republicof Germany and the bronze to LaimaZilporitee of the U.S.S.R.

    9/27The day sent waves of shock anddisillusionment to billions of televisionviewers around the world. BenJohnson, who set a world record of9.79 seconds in the men's 100 metersfinal September. 24, failed a dope test;the IOC stripped him of his goldmedal.In the first drug examination, conduct-ed shortly after the sprint, Johnsontested positive. The second testshowed the same result. At about 10a.m. he left Seoul through KimpoInternational Airport.Gregory Louganis of the United Statesrepeated as gold medalist in the men'sspringboard diving.Shortly after the gold medal was hungaround his neck, Louganis announcedhis retirement.Gold medals were also earned inequestrian, fencing, judo, swimmingand weightlifting.The day saw athletes competing in 17sports.

    9/28Eighteen sports were featured, offer-ing 15 gold medals. Kim Soo-nyung ofKorea smashed the world record inthe women's 50-meter single roundarchery by scoring 336 points.In athletics, the United States sweptthe men's 400 meters; Steven Lewisfinished first in 43.87, Harry ButchReynolds came in second at 43.93and Danny Everett crossed the linethird in 44.09. In the men's 200meters, Joe Deloach of the UnitedStates established an Olympic recordwith a time of 19.75 to earn a goldmedal that Carl Lewis had hoped toclaim.

    In the women's 400-meter hurdles,Debra Flintoff-King of Australia camein first at 53.17, a scant 0.01 secondahead of Tatiana Ledovskaia of theU.S.S.R. Only after looking at theelectronic scoreboard was Flintoff-King certain she had finished first.In the pole vault finals, Sergey Bubkaof the U.S.S.R. won the gold with anOlympic record of 5.90 meters;Soviets swept the medals in thisevent. Since 1983, Bubka hasbettered his own world records ninetimes.Powered by Anja Fichtel, the FederalRepublic of Germany took thewomen's fencing foil team title. Sixdays earlier, Fitchtel also won a goldin individual foil.In the team jumping finals held at theSeoul Equestrian Park, the FederalRepublic of Germany won the titlewith 17.25; the medal represented thenation's sixth gold in Seoul. It was thefirst team jumping gold finish for theFederal Republic since the 1972Munich Games.The Federal Republic of Germanyearned four of the six golds at stakefor equestrians in Seoul.In connection with another dopingscandal, Hungary sent 10 lifters home;the action followed the announcementby the IOC Medical Commission thatAndor Szanyi, silver medalist in the100-kilogram class, tested positive foranabolic steroids.

At the Los Angeles Games,the Korean team finished second.In the women's volleyball final, Perutook lead in the first two sets but lostthe third, fourth and fifth sets to theU.S.S.R.In the women's basketball final, theUnited States outpointed Yugoslavia,77:70, to bring home the gold.Florence Griffith Joyner of the UnitedStates finished first in the women's200 meters final with a world recordtime of 21.34. Responding to cheersfrom spectators, Joyner circled thetrack in a victory lap.In the women's long jump, JackieJoyner-Kersee turned in an Olympicrecord of 7.40 to add a gold to the titleshe won in the women's heptathlon.In the women's discus throw finals,Martina Hellmann of the GermanDemocratic Republic broke anOlympic record with a throw of 72.30meters: the silver went to teammateDiana Gansky.

    Hungary won the gold, the U.S.S.R.the silver, and Italy the bronze medalin the men's fencing sabre teamcompetition.In the finals of the over 110-kilogramweightlifting competition, AlexandreKourlovitch of the U.S.S.R. lifted 212.5kilograms in snatch and 250 kilogramsin clean and jerk for an Olympicrecord total of 462.5 kilograms. Theprevious record was 440 kilograms.Wrestling yielded three golds. In the48-kilogram freestyle final, Japan'sTakashi Kobayashi defeated Bulgaria'sIvan Tzonov to win the gold.     9/30The 14th day was packed with actionin 16 sports, and victorious athletesclaimed 24 gold medals.Korea won golds in women's archeryand table tennis. The hosts sweptmedals in the women's individualarchery; Kim Soo-nyung scored 344points for gold, Wang Hee-kyung wonthe silver with 332, and Yun Young-sook took the bronze with 327.     The Soviet men's basketball team,losers in a preliminary game withYugoslavia, won revenge against theYugoslavians in the final 76:63, to earnthe gold medal.Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakiadefeated Tim Mayotte of the UnitedStates, 3:1, to capture the gold inmen's singles tennis-a sport returnedduring the Seoul Games after a 64-year absence.In rhythmic gymnastics competition,Marina Lobatch of the U.S.S.R.scored a perfect 60.00 to collect thegold medal.Canada's Carolyn Waldo scored200.150 to capture the gold for solosynchronized swimming, and TradeRuiz-Conforto of the United Statesplaced second with 197.633.

In the finals ofmen's 500-meter kayak singles.Hungary's Zsolt Gyulay finished first in1:44.82. Olaf Heukrodt of the GermanDemocratic Republic won the men's500-meter Canadian singles with atime of 1:56.42.In the finals of women's men's 500-meter kayak singles, Vania Guechevaof Bulgaria was the winner with a timeof 1:55. 19. New Zealand won the500-meter kayak pairs, while theU.S.S.R. brought home top honors inthe men's 500-meter Canadian pairs.The German Democratic Republicwon the women's 500-meter kayakpairs.Olga Bondarenko of the U.S.S.R. wonthe gold in the inaugural running of thewomen's 10,000 meters finishing in31:05.21.In the men's 3,000-meter steeple-chase, Kenya finished first andsecond; Julius Kariuki, the goldmedalist, established an Olympicrecord of 8:05.51, only 0.1 secondbehind the world record establishedby a Kenyan 10 years ago.Louise Ritter of the United States setan Olympic record of 2.03 meters inthe women's high jump. In thewomen's 100-meter hurdles, JordankaDonkova of Bulgaria captured the goldwith an Olympic record of 12.38. Inthe men's 50-kilometer walk,Viacheslav Ivanenko of the U.S.S.R.finished first with an Olympic record ofthree hours, 38 minutes and 29seconds.

    10/1With the Games swiftly drawing to aclose, athletes battled for 39 goldmedals on the second-last day of thecompetition. It was a fruitful day forthe host country's entrants.Korea swept the golds in archery teamcompetitions for both men andwomen. Kim Soo-nyung, Wang Hee-kyung and Yun Young-sook, whofinished 1-2-3 in women's individualcompetition, struck gold as a teamwith 982 points a 30-point marginover second-place Indonesia.Chun In-soo, Lee Han-sup and ParkSung-soo accumulated 986 points towin the men's team archery competi-tion.

    The final of men's table tennis singleswas a contest between Koreans YooNam-kyu and Kim Ki-taik. Yoo was thewinner, 3:1.Korea's Han Myung-woo defeatedTurkey's Necmi Gencalp for a freestylewrestling gold medal in the 82-kilogram class.Soviet women streaked to a worldrecord finish in 3:15.18 to win the4x400 meter relay, while in the men's4x400 meters, U.S. runners tied theworld record of 2:56.16.In the women's 400-meter relay,Florence Griffith Joyner of the UnitedStates won another gold to become atriple medalist.Kenya finished first in the men's 1,500meters and 5,000 meters; in the 1,500meters, Peter Rono won with a time of3:35.96, and in the 5,000 meters, JohnNgugi clocked a winning 13:11.70.Rumania's Paula Ivan took thewomen's 1,500-meter gold medal withan Olympic record time of 3:53.96.For the first time since the MelbourneGames of 1956, the U.S.S.R. won thefootball title, defeating Brazil, 2:1.In the men's handball final, Korea lostto the U.S.S.R., 32:25. In the men's tennis doublesfinal, Ken Flach and Robert Seguso ofthe United States defeated Spain'sEmilio Sanchez and Sergio Casal, 3:2,after close games.Six canoeing golds were determinedas follows:In the men's 1,000-meter kayaksingles, Greg Barton of the UnitedStates finished first in 3:55.27; Bartonalso won the gold in the men's 1,000-meter kayak doubles with a time of3:32.42.Birgit Schmidt of the GermanDemocratic Republic won the gold inwomen's 500-meter kayak fours. Oneday earlier, Schmidt took the gold inwomen's kayak pairs.In men's 1,000-meter Canadiansingles, Ivan Klementiev of theU.S.S.R. finished first; the Soviet menalso won the 1,000-meter Canadianpairs.Yugoslavia retained its Olympic waterpolo title by defeating the UnitedStates, 9:7. The gold medal forsynchronized duet went to CanadiansMichelle Cameron and Carolyn Waldo.In the judo heavyweight final, HitoshiSaito of Japan defeated Henry Stoehrof the German Democratic Republic togarner his second Olympic gold.

    10/2Nine finals were conducted on thefinal day of the Seoul Games.Italy's unheralded marathon runner,Gelindo Bordin, finished first in a hotlycontested race. The 42.195-kilometermarathon featured several world-classmarathoners including DouglasWakiihuri, Japan's TakeyukiNakayama, and Houssein AhmedSaleh of Djibouti.
