Head Coach Penny Lucas-Whitebegins her second season at MSU

Dynamic. That is what Memphis State head coach Penny

Lucas-White believes her 1992 Lady Tiger volleyball team will

be this season. "I like a game to be dynamic and I think that

we have the caliber of athletes to be just that, dynamic."The Lady Tigers will be young again this season, as the

team lost five players, including four starters (Kim Lemon,

Alisande Cavanagh, Lori and Lisa Rembe) from the 1991

squad that finished 20-15. Lucas-White feels that the team's

youthfulness could be an asset as there would be no traditionor any expectations for the team to live up to. As well, in her

opinion, the team will have nothing to lose and everything togain.

According to Lucas-White, lone senior Analise Navia willbe the team's "mouthpiece." The 5-10 outside hitter was a

walk-on last season and saw action in 34 of the team's 35

matches. She ranked as the team's second leading hitter

(.227) and blocker (72 total blocks).

"Analise is very vocal on the court. She is a real fighter

and doesn't like to lose. We want her to be a leader because

those qualities can become a chain reaction on the court."

Sami Randolph and Amy Greer have been at MemphisState for two seasons. Randolph, a 5-7 backcourt and outside

hitter, worked hard during the spring season. Lucas-White

changed her swing, which has helped the southpaw become

more effective at the net.Greer, a 5-11 outside hitter, has been a starter since

arriving in Tiger Town. She led the team with a 2.70 kills per

game average and 311 digs. According to Lucas-White, Greer

is the team's best all-around player, as she can set, hit, dig andblock. As well, Greer trained as the team's setter during the

spring season, and she may see a lot of playing time at that

slot.

Three players returnfortheirsophomoreseason:Cherilyn

Bright, a 5-11 middle hitter; Renee Ross, a 5-9 outside hitterand Jamie Runkle, a 5-7 outside hitter. All three Lady Tigers

saw plenty of action as freshmen and Lucas-White expectsthese players to continue to make a major contribution to the

squad."Cherilyn sees the block very well and she can do a good

job for us in the front row. I am looking for her to be more ofa blocker this season and to gain more self confidence," said

Lucas-White.Ross started 25 of the 32 matches that she played last

season. She averaged 2.0 kills per game and and had 229digs to her credit, which ranked third on the Lady Tiger

statistical charts.

"Jamie was hampered with injuries last season but I hope

we have got those physical problems worked out. She is oneof those players that you can count on to do anything you ask

her to do. If you need to tell her that you need to dig up a ball,

she will do just that. If you need her to play in the back to pass

the ball, you can count on her to do that," explained Lucas-

White.Randolph, Runkle and Ross are the team's three dynamic

passers. Lucas-White believes that if a team has consistent

Junior Amy Greer, the team's top killplayer in 1991

Page 5: 1992 Memphis Volleyball Media Guide

Junior Sami Randolph a southpawcan play up front or in the back

passers that it can compete with anyone."I think we will be able to compete because we can pass

and we will be able to set our offense when we are receivingthe ball," stated Lucas-White. "We will be a lot quicker andmore athletic this season. I plan go into every game with littlegoals and if we accomplish more than that, I feel that it will helpbuild our confidence."

Four newcomers will help build the Lady Tiger programthat has had five consecutive 20-win seasons.

Setter Janice Neyens will play an important role for theLady Tigers this season. The 5-8 Chandler, Ariz., native willreplace two-year starter Cavanagh. Neyens, according toLucas-White, is a very mature player who is very knowledge-able about the game. She led her Corona del Sol High Schoolsquad to two state runner-up titles and one state champion-ship. As well, she was a first-team Central Region for 5Aconference and a second-team East Valley selection hersenior season.

Jacqueline Mack is a 5-11 middle blocker, who hails fromBirmingham, Ala. She is not only an excellent athlete but anoutstanding student. While at Ramsay Alternative High School, she was a national honor society member and earned numer-ous scholastic achievement awards. She was the 1991-92City Tournament MVP. Last year she was named the Playerof the Year in Birmingham. She led her 1990-91 squad to thatstate championship and was named the MVP of that tourna-

ment. Mack earned all-city and all-state tournament teamhonors as a junior.

Deidre Rowell will play at both the outside and middlehitter positions which will allow for versatility in the Lady Tigeroffense. She was the area 15, Class 5A most valuable playerand was named to the all-tournament team. Rowell washonored as her team's most valuable defensive player in1990. That same season she was her team's best attackerand leading scorer.

Monique Swaby hails from Miami, Fla. where she at-tended North Miami High School. The two-time, first team All-Dade County selection averaged 27 kills per match. As asenior she was named the Dade County Player of the Year asshe averaged 11 assists, four aces and five blocks permatch.Swaby also earned first team all-state honors and wastwice named her team's MVP.

The Lady Tigers will be on the road much this season. Theteam will play only seven home matches besides the GraphicSystems Classic set for Sept. 11-12. The team will face suchtough competitors as: Minnesota, Arkansas State, BowlingGreen, Texas-Arlington and William & Mary. The 1992 sched-ule includes a home and away series with each of the fiveGreat Midwest Conference squads (Cincinnati, DePaul,Marquette, St. Louis and Alabama at Birmingham).

Senior Alisande Cavnagh, Lori and LisaRembe and Kim Lemon capped off banner

careers at MSU

Forfirst-year Lady Tiger head coach Penny Lucas-White,the 1991 volleyball season was taking her first bungee jump.

"I arrived just a few days before the players reported. Thewhole season was a learning experience for both the playersand myself. However, I feel that we had a very successfulseason," said Lucas-White.

She inherited a team that was coming off one of the mostsuccessful in Lady Tiger history. The 1990 MSU squadfinished with a 30-9 record and was a semi-finalist at theWomen's Invitational Volleyball Championships.

However, Lucas-White would be without the services ofKatherine Lehman, Sarah Tjelmeland, Rhonda Kottke andMarie Zwolinski. Lehman, Tjelmeland and Kottke all earnednumerous honors during their four-year careers at MSU andall helped rewrite the Lady Tiger record books.

Returning from that squad was senior setter AlisandeCavanagh, outside hitters Lisa Rembe, middle hitter LoriRembe and Kim Lemon an outside and middle hitter. As well,Lucas-White had the services of Amy Greer, a 5-11 sopho-more who had seen plenty of action her freshman season.

Added to the Lady Tiger lineup were freshman CherilynBright, a 5-11 middle hitter from Wheaton, III.; Renee Ross a5-9 outside hitter from Marion, Iowa; Jamie Runkle, a 5-7outside hitter from Peru, Ind.; and Lisa Bray, a 5-7 setter fromMemphis, Tenn.

The team opened the season at the Georgia Lady Bull-dogs Invitational and was able to win its first match against

American University. However, its next two opponents, Geor-gia and Illinois State were too tough for MSU.

The Lady Tigers came up empty handed at the VolleyballMonthly Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

At the Saluki Invitational, MSU lost its opening match tohosting Southern Illinois. With a 1-6 record, the Lady Tigersregrouped their forces and got back on the winning trackbeating Ohio University and Illinois-Chicago to take secondplace honors at that tournament.

The team played only eight home matches during the1991 season. It opened its home schedule hosting the GraphicSystems Classic. After winning their opening match againstNortheast Louisiana, the Lady Indians of Arkanas Statepounded the Lady Tigers in three straight games to claim thechampionship title.

Back on the road at the Wright State Invitational, MSUwas finally able to get a .500 record (7-7). Despite winning itsfirst two matches, hosting Wright State proved too much forMSU and again the Lady Tigers took second place at atournament.

The team see-sawed above and below .500 for most ofthe season.

Competing for the first time in the Great Midwest Confer-ence the Lady Tigers would have stiff competition with Cincin-nati, St. Louis, DePaul, Alabama at Birmingham and Marquette.

MSU managed to win its first two GMC matches overCincinnatiand St. Louis. An experienced DePaulteam handedMSU its first conference loss, but the Lady Tigers got back onthe winning track against Marquette. The team lost its finalregular season conference match to Alabama at Birmingham.

After that loss to UAB, MSU was 13-14 on the year. Winsover Rice and Mississippi got the Lady Tigers back over the.500 mark, and the rest of the season was smooth sailing forthe Lady Tigers.

Memphis State completed the regular season at theConnecticut Challenge where they brought home the cham-pionship trophy. During that two-day event, MSU beat Army,Connecticut and Virgina Commonwealth.

With a 18-14 mark and Lucas-White feeling comfortablewith a starting lineup which consisted of the Rembe twins,Cavanagh, Lemon, Analise Navia and Amy Greer, the LadyTigers were ready to host the Great Midwest Championships.

As the number three seed, MSU faced St. Louis inopening round action. It took only three games to advance tothe semi-finals.

Against UAB in the semi-finals, Lucas-White's frontlinecould not stop the powerful Lady Blazers and fell in threestraight games.

It was time for the squad to regroup for the final time. Inthe third place match, MSU easily mauled the Lady Bearcatsof Cincinnati.

Forthe fifth consecutive year the Lady Tigers finished witha 20-win season going 20-15. Alisande Cavanagh earned firstteam all-conference while Lori Rembe was second team all-GMC. Cavanagh also earned GMC all-tournament laurels.

Things like this are supposed to take time. But it didn'ttake much time for the Great Midwest Conference to makean impact on the national scene. The nation's newestNCAA, Division I conference, the Great Midwest celebratedits first season by sending a pair of teams to the semifinalsof an NCAA Championship.

The Saint Louis soccer team was the first GreatMidwest squad to make the run at a national title. Afterearning the inaugural conference soccer championship inNovember, the Billikens advanced all the way to thenational semifinal game before losing to eventual championVirginia in overtime.

Cincinnati's men's basketball squad provided thesecond shot at a national title. The Bearcats claimed thefirst men's basketball conference title en route to a run tothe NCAA Final Four before falling to Michigan.

It should not be a surprise the Great Midwest met withsuccess. From its formation in November, 1990, the sixmember league (Alabama at Birmingham, Cincinnati,DePaul, Marquette, Memphis State and St. Louis) hasbeen tabbed with the "can't miss" label.

"We've always known this was going to be a very goodconference," commissioner Mike Slive said. "What we hadno way of knowing was how quickly it would happen.Throughout our planning, we expected that we would be ahigh quality athletics conference. Having two teams reachthe national semifinals brought that recognition quickly".

The Great Midwest could quickly be recognized i neven more sports. Overall, the conference sponsorschampionships in 14 sports. In addition to soccer andmen's basketball, the championship sports are volleyball, basketball, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor trackand field and cross country for women along with baseball, golf, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and fieldand cross country for men.

In fact, the Great Midwest already earned its firstautomatic qualification in volleyball. Its 1991 champion,UAB, advanced to the National Invitational VolleyballChampionships (NIVC) in Dayton, Ohio as an automaticqualifier. For 1992, it has been recommended that thewinner of the conference title get an automatic berth in theNCAA Championship field.

There also was plenty of academic success. Fiveconference athletes earned GTE Academic Ail-Americanhonors and several others were honored on the districtlevel. Academic success should continue. The GreatMidwest is committed to academic success for its studentathletes and maintains stringent guidelines regarding initialand continuing eligibility.

Great Midwest institutions are more than athletic rivals. The league is developing an academic consortium for allstudents enrolled in one institution to attend one or more ofthe other five while earning credit at the original institution.Consortium plans also include a visiting lecture seriescoinciding with athletic contests.

Slive, formerly a Chicago based attorney who special-ized in sports law, sees more success on the horizon.

By any standard, it would be hard not to call the 1991volleyball season a success for the Great Midwest Confer-ence. Before the nation's newest NCAA, Division I athleticsconference even played its first volleyball match, theleague was rewarded with it first automatic qualification topostseason play, a bid to the National Invitational VolleyballChampionships.

That bid is indicative of the quality of volleyball playedin the Great Midwest Conference. In 1990, three leaguemembers were champions of their previous conference andtwo advanced to the NIVC. That depth of quality made fora thrilling first season of Great Midwest play.

DePaul took the regular season crown with perfect 5-0record in league play. The Blue Demons earned the topspot in the inaugural Great Midwest Conference VolleyballChampionships November 22-23 in Memphis, Tenn. UABfinished second at 4-1 while Memphis State was third at 3-2.

The inaugural championships provided two days ofoutstanding play, capped by UAB's five match victory overDePaul to earn the conference title and the trip to the NIVCin Dayton, Ohio. Coach Brenda Williams' Blazers opened a2-0 lead winning 17-16 and 16-14 before the Blue Demonsrallied. DePaul knotted the score at 2-2 with 15-9 and 15-10 wins to set up the decisive fifth game. The final wasclose, with UAB claiming the match and the championship15-13.

The inaugural season was marked with severalawards. DePaul's Susanne Fogarty earned honorablemention All-America and third team all-region honors fromthe American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVGA).Fogarty just missed becoming the first player in NCAA,Division I history to record 2,000 kills and 2,000 digs in hercareer. Fogarty finished with 2,134 kills and 1,950 digs.

UAB's Danielle Reaves, who led the Great Midwest inhitting at .334, was second team all- region from the AVCA.Teammate Mellissa Cobb picked up all-tournament honorsat the NIVC as the Blazers finished 33-10.

DePaul coach Anna Marie Marassa was namedregional coach of the year by the AVCA as well afterleading her Blue Demons to a 32-7 record. The 32 winsand the .821 winning percentage are both school records.

The Great Midwest also picked up some academicawards. Angie Showalter of Cincinnati and Suzie Johnsonof UAB were first team GTE Academic All-District whileReaves of UAB was secondteam.

The Tiger athletic family has many places to call home atMemphis State University.

In 1970, the Memphis State Athletic Department officiallyopened the Kennedy Sportsplex, a 140-acre complex locatedjust south of the main campus. The complex serves asthehome of theTigerfootball, baseball andtrackteams and offersworkout facilities for all MSU sports. Since that time, however, the facility has taken on a new name and is now called the BillyJ. Murphy Complex. The complex was renamed in honor offormer MSU head football coach and athletic director Billy J.Murphy.

The main building at Murphy Complex features a 50-yard,indoor practice field with an artificial surface. This field is usedfor workouts when the weather prohibits outdoor practicesand is also used by the baseball team for winter workouts. Alsohoused in the main building is a modern, well-equippedtraining room, a fully equipped weight training facility, thefootball equipment room, the football locker room, sauna andsteam rooms and film and meeting rooms, as well as lockerrooms for the baseball and track teams. Located behind themain building are four outdoor football fields, used for fall andspring practices.

All of Memphis State's home baseball games are playedat Nat Buring Stadium, a 2,000-seat facility adjacent toMurphy's main building. Recently lights and a new enclosedpress box were added. Nat Buring will be the site of the 1993Great Midwest Conference baseball tournament.

Located next to the baseball stadium is Murphy Track, aneight-lane, polyurethane tartan surface track used by theMemphis State track teams for home meets.
