T * R R C TACONIC RUNNING LIFE MAY 11993 HOT TIMES AT FREEZER FIVES BY: STEVE QUINN Februaiy 7,1993. It was fifteen, may-be twenty degrees at 7:30 AM with a wind chill that made it seem five degrees colder. Ice and snow were, unfortunately, missing. All we needed were about 100 hardy runners and we would have ourselves a race. I'm gone, checking out the course, and getting the fire going with co-race director Jim McDermott. At the "ranch," the phone rings, "Hell-o." "Ah, sorry to bother you, but, ah, will the race be run today?" Katy responds, "Of course, and the race fee for non-club members is $6.00." The individual on the other end asks how she knows that the caller is not a club member. Katy responds, "TACONICS know we do not cancel races because it is cold. These are the Freezer Fives." Although it was cold, the times were not. Vincent Keane finished the 5K course in 16:32 to win overall by 1:03 ahead of Teny Horton. In third place was Tony Galfano. On the finer side of the race, Loma Metzger finished in first with a time of 20:21. Connie Grace was second, and Colleen Law, returning from the warm South American climate, finished in third, unaffected by the cold. In the Masters Division, Eammon Coughlin sent his regrets, while Gary Steinel pummelled out an 18:25 to win, followed by Gaiy Struve and Art Weisberg. The women's title went to Kathleen Lyons with a 23:15. She was closely followed by Kate Glynn and Donna Cavalieri. On Februaiy 28 we ran the second race in the Winter Series: the Five Mile. Appropriately, winter snow storms had closed the back trail, a familiar part of the traditional course. A new course was quickly laid out. This course provided for a down hill start and a down hill finish! First across the finish line was Bob Hermesch with a time of 27:11. In second place was John Tracy from the Bronx with a time of 27:19, and in third was Nick Caswell with a time of 27:23. In seventh overall with a time of 28:30 was Lisa Vaill, our first woman finisher. TRRC's own Alyssa Lifrieri and Connie Grace were second and third, respectively. At a previous club meeting, interest was expressed in a Clydesdale Division. The race directors were happy to oblige. The overall Clydesdale winner was Steve Hoanzl. He was awarded a hand painted horseshoe and a collar which, rumor has it, was used by Sybil Luddington's horse. Henceforth, until otherwise defeated, he is entitled to the title "Most Honorable Fastest Fat Guy". , (Continued on page 3.) 7 ^

Ah! May at last! Whew what an ugly winter; it will bemore fun to reminisce than to go through. Your a heartybunch Taconic, and kudos are definitely in order for allof you that faithfully trained regardless of the weather. You sure kept me motivated, because if you weren't outthere, I wouldn't be.

A TRRC first: We never before had to cancel arace (the word wasn't in Dan Caffrey's vocabulary) buton March 14th the 22" snow forced the closing of FDRState Park. We thought of running the race on theTaconic, but that was closed too. We didn't reallycancel the St. Patrick's Day Races, as a matter of factBrian, Harry, Susan, and Jack were busy plowing thewhite stuff off the green line in the park, when theRangers arrived, (see "...on a break" proof photo) Theyrequested we reschedule for another snowy day, whichturned out to be Sunday, March 21st, with another 4"storm. The HOT LINE worked very well with over 150calls one day and 50+ the next. Shovels at port arms toJohn Hallinan for a great job. He still speaks with aslight quiver in his voice if anyone mentions the "s"word. Congratulations to Bob Dennison, Jr. the 14 yr.old winner of the two Aer Lingus tickets to Ireland.

Teatown meeting runs start at 5:30 prior tomonthly club meetings (2nd Wednesday of the month).

Nice a'job to the Mudman (Owen McC).Grunter attendance was up over 30%, and all reportsagree it was the best mud in years.

Thank you to all the Mothers, we love you. Acard can say it, a bunch of flowers too, but nothingcan say it like running with her (or cheering her on)at the Mother's Day 5K Special on May 9th.

Now that the clocks are sprung forward, andwe're steppin' up the season (so to speak), come onout to a race, your choice: Lake Carmel 5M - 5/1;Mile Fly - 5/2; North County lOK - 5/16; TheHuman Race 5K (run/walk) - 5/22; Lincoln Hall5M - 6/6. See article on temporary course changesfor both the 4th of July Mahopac Classic, and theMahopac lOK 7/24 due to major road constructionon the Lake Road.

See ya' out there, Fredy Low

Some people just volunteer, but others risk everything. Greg Diamond is such a guy! While sitting in his car, a gust of wind took down our finish line and crashed it into Greg'scar's windshield - shattering it! Greg scored the race, accepted an apology for my stupidity, and refused to accept anything for the repairs. A fast runner, computer jock, eye doctor andclass guy!

Thanks to a terrific crew of volunteers: to Tony Galfano and John Hallinan who laid outthe courses and helped set up the finish line, to Lariy Lenahan, Vinny Juliano, Don LowryMelanie Benvenue, Dave O'Toole, Dan Moffitt, Bill Lifrieri, Doug Miller, Joe Porcaro, SueSolow, Owen McCrudden, Pete Meisler and Mike Gosset for handling traffic and splits, toEd McLaughlin for music and lead car, and to Rich Adamski, Larry Thorpe, SrattAbercrombie and Katy Quinn for registration duties, to Marge Katt for weighing Clydesdaleentries. Special thanks to Mark Einhorn for helping with the most excellent tee-shirt design.Eat your heart out if you didn't get one. There will always be next year.

T h e b e s t l a i d p l a n s — .

Like many other activities along the east coast, the annual St.Patrick's Day road races proved to be the victim of "the blizzard".With things pretty much snowed in on the weekend of March 13thand 14th, John H. and Freddy Low decided to postpone the racefor a week. As only Fred can arrange, we seemed to get almostas much publicity( including TV air time) for postponing therace as we had prior to the race. The weather had to be bettern e x t S u n d a y . . .

J ( th is is a fami ly publ icat ion)- th is was the firs t react ionon the 21st as we again woke up to snow. After a quick morningphone call(we should have had a direct line installed for thisrace), we decided that having the St. Patrick's Day Races inAugust would be unseemly. Besides, the weathermen who had accuratelyforecast the b l izzard were say ing that th is s torm wouldn ' t amountt o m u c h . . .

In spite of it all, those who braved the elements and found alegal(?) place to park managed to have a good time. IrishmanVincent Keane, who made it up from the Bronx, asked a lot ofpre-race questions concerning the course. He must have knownthat he would be leading the way f rom star t to finish wi th atime of 34:19. Tom Roach (35:09) and Charlie Creel (35:37)rounded out the top three. On the women's side, Alyssa Lifieri(40:33) outpaced Margie Katt (45:27) and COlleen Law (47:52).Two mile entrant Robert Dennison finished just ahead of his father, and that move put him in position to win the tickets to Ireland.Bob couldn't believe it when called, and it took conversationswith each member of his family to convince them. The t icketswere presented at the Apri l meeting at Teatown.

Maybe an August race wouldn't have been such a bad idea aftera l l . . .

Many thanks to all who helped out in spite of the weather!

Mahopac Races Course Change TRRC Logo ContestDue to a major road construction project onRoute 6N, around Lake Mahopac, The 4thof July Mahopac Classic and the July 27thMahopac lOK will have a temporary coursechange for 1993.

The races will both start and finish atMahopac High School, as in the past, butwill run a loop around Kirk Lake instead ofLake Mahopac. The course will be:From the school on Baldwin Place Road, left on Route 6N, right on West Lake Blvd.,left on Longwood, right on Kirk LakeDrive, left over London Bridge, to StocumAvenue, left on Hill Street, down to RedMills, up "the hill" on Route 6N, back toBaldwin Place Road and to the High Schooltrack. Although the 4th of July Classic isusually an 8 miler, both races will be lOKand run on the same course in oppositedirections. One will go down "the hill" onRoute 6N and then clockwise around KirkLake, the other race counter-clockwise and,of course, if one goes down the other mustgo up .

Try them both, front-wards that is,and compare your times. By the way, "thehill" notwithstanding, doesn't leave eitherdirection a cake-walk. If you run down 6N,you'll have to run up Hill Street, whichdidn't get its name from a television show, but it may give you the Blues.

These changes are for 1993 only. The 4th of July Mahopac Classic for 1994will be back to the 8 mile distance. TRRCand the Mahopac Chamber of Commercehave already begun plans for a "CLASSICWEEKEND" with in-town food fair, rides, hats n' horns, and of course stars n' stripes.

TAC, The Athletic Congress has changed itsname and logo this year to the more "90's"look and feel of USA Track & Field, orU S A T & F .

Taconic Road Runners Club is consideringa similar change. The new club name willbe: The Northern Westchester/PutnamC o u n t i e s Tr a c k & F i e l d , R o a dRunning/Cross Country Club, orTNWPCT&FRRCCC-see it's really quitesimple once you get the hang of it. Oncemore from the top. Give me a T... OK itwas a belated April fools joke, we justwanted to see if you where paying attention.Good old TRRC is here to stay.

Now let's talk about our emblem thatwe carry into battle, our code of arms, ourmedallion of honor. It may be ready for a90's overhaul, and who better to ask butTRRC'ers themselves. Watcha' think? Anyideas? Pen them out, send them in. It's noteven necessary that you use a pen (in caseyou want to erase) nor is it essential thatyou draw very well. We want ideas, notabsolute finished copy. There will be acontest and some grandiose award fttting theefforts of the winner. Send your design to:TRRC Logo Contest, PO Box 99, BaldwinPlace, NY 10505
