It was so cold at the 5 Miler that the timing instruments, both manual and automatic, experienced operational difficulties, and the wind prevented the finish line banner from standing aloft. (We didn't want a repeat of last year's broken windshield, thank you very much.) The 5 Miler had 68 finishers and almost as many volunteers. Joanna Nash, with Rich and family at her side, took up numerous volunteer duties. (The advantage of running a race in this weather is that lots of folk decide to dress warmly and volunteer rather than run.) Thanks to all of you who helped with registration, refreshments, split times, finish line duties, etc., etc.!!! I'm "NOT" going to mention the snow, ice, freezing rain, sub-zero temps, wind - yuck! I'd trade alOK PR for a nice - will it ever get here? - Spring day. Idon't know about you, but I didn't run much in 4° temperatures with a wind chill factor of -30°. (How do theycalculate WCT, bye-the-bye?) So, from the fireside, with the latest Tom Clancy in hand, I wait it out. Havingsaid that...

The TRRC season got off to a cool start with thefirst leg of the Freezer Fives (5K) We may have tochange the name of this event. Last year brought a 50°plus beautiful day (affectionately known as the ThermalMelt-down Day). The 1994 version was 40° plus, brightsun, with 142 runners - possibly an indoor record - butthe week that followed brought us nearly 20 inches of...(Ican't say it - NO MORE!!)

By the time you read this, we should be well onour way to St. Patrick's Day races (Don't even thinkabout it, right John?!), and we'll all be in singlets andshorts. Once again, Aer Lingus will be awarding twotickets to the Emerald Isle, but you've got to be in itto win it!

Special mention and kudos to all TRRC's men'smasters team members for a first place finish in theNYRRC Club Team Competition, especially ScottAbercrombie, and Nick Caswell, the catalysts. FabulousTiffany's trophy (which I will be showing off at TRRCevents.) Erika Abraham also brought pride to the clubwith her age group award.

The January 1994 TRRC monthly club meetingwas can. . .(I can't say it - we never can..., not ever!)However, despite 6 inches of the white stuff onFebruary's second Wednesday, about 30 of the hungry,getting-cabin-fever, hard-core mustered at the CarriageHouse for an up-beat meeting and food festival (alaSusan Poet and Marika Sickinger). You're the people Ido this crazy job for. Thanks. Our January member ofthe month was Frosty the Snowman - but of course; whoelse got more than 10 miles in all month -outdoors, thati s ?

Think Spring!Seeya' out there,Fredy Low

The club motto, for those who asked, is"Facta Non Verba", which , loosely translated, means stop the and start moving. (Or, "Don'tjust talk, act!")

Let ters to the Edi tor :

Hi from Paris!December 19,1993

Dear fellow Taconics-Thanks so much for your card and goodwishes! The only negative aspect ofthese travels of mine is missing myfriends back home, especially myrunning buddies.

Where's by newsletter? The running here is not as

good as Northern Westchester, butParis does have some advantages, namely, the food & drink. Also, it's notas cold here, mostly in the 40's & 50's.

Tve been teaching music andEnglish, which has been a nice changefrom being a "mob" lawfirm employee. Also have been traveling a bit - Londonand Brussels, along with some smalltowns in France. Everything is so closetogether here!

Hoping to run the ParisMarathon on April 24th. Anyone wantto join me?

Happy Holidays and best ofeverything in'94. Hope to see all ofyou soon.

GUILTY as charged(of moaning)

How many times haveyou heard it said, "Bad race, today. I felt awful." Howmany times have you said,"Bad race today. Could havedone better."

So what? Well, stopmoaning! Give it a rest.Nobody wants to hear you,m a n .

There's nothing worsethan hearing somebody elsemoan, right? You bet. Sogive it a rest for thoseother poor souls who have tohear you air your bad vibes.

I found myself inexactly this situationduring the summer. I can'timagine how boring I musthave sounded. 1 can saythis because I listened to

somebody else - and it wasboring and monotonous.

So, what to do? Well, just lighten up and justshrug off that bad run. WeALL have them. Besides, Idon't want to hear it, man.

Place: Tavem-on-the-Green,Central Park. Time: New Year 's Eve.

5,000 runners shouted in unison as theball descended in the distance betweenthe hotels on Central Park South. Thefireworks commenced and we were offand running - albeit drunk.

Normally, I'm a pretty reservedsort of person. But not tonight - noway. I shouted like a banshee. Beerwas consumed before, during and afterthe run. What the hell. Balls to thew a l l !

M o r e f u e w o r k s . S o m e o n eshouted. "Incoming!"

Itumed. A grizzled lookingvet smiled.

"Far out," I said. He smiledagain.

More fireworks. God, theywere loud; and bright and beautiful too.

Back to the 6:30 pace andthe fragile right foot. I plodded on.There were more than a few familiarfaces in the race.

Two and a half miles out, weturned around some cones underspotlights on the upper East Side. Isaw Lynn Jennings tum ahead of me.She's good, I thought. Back we ran, watching those behind us comeforward for their U-tum.

Then I saw the masked runner. This was not the Purple Runner - tooslow. I looked again. Could it be, Iwondered. Hell, it had to be. I'd knowthat gait anjnvhere - flailing arms andhead cocked to the side. But it couldn'tbe. And there was a difference -1think. Maybe it wasn't. After all, I wasdrinking

A Look At The MarathonBy Susan Solow

26.2 The New York City Marathon - a study in endurance.Twenty-six point two miles.

(Don't forget the .2 miles.) Entrantsprepare and train for this race formonths. We won't go into that now,(or later, for that fact. It has nothingto do with THIS story), This stoiy isabout the people behind themarathoners. (No. I don't mean thepeople who finished slower thanyou.) I mean the support team. Thew a t c h e r s !

This story begins at 5:00A.M. on Marathon morning at thesound of the alarm clock. The buswill be leaving Downing Park at 6:15A.M., so those of us who drive ourheroes to the bus must get up at thisungodly hour. This year, the heat(Remember: Its was 70 plus degrees.) caused fog so thick you couldnot even see the front of the car. So,off we trudged, to the park for thedrop-off. I got to go back home andtry to get a little more sleep before Ihad to go into Manhattan to theMayflower Hotel. The trip down wasuneventful, and even though Icouldn't park in my usual lot, I wasable to find parking around thec o m e r .

The hotel room was notlisted under Taconic Road Runners, and the operator (Use the housephone, please.) would not give outthe room number, but would ring theroom. Carol Hansen answered andinformed me that they were in themidst of changing rooms and theroom ordered was finally ready. So, Ipitched in and helped move all thestuff. Pete Corsino, Pat Loehfelm,Jimmy McDermott and Carol hadbrought wine, beer, sandwiches, soda, cups, plates, salads, posters, etc. Wetried to put posters and the TaconicRoad Runners Banners up around theroom, but with thumb tacks intometal walls, it really wasn't easy.

Finally, we were ready towatch the race. We walked (veryfast) from the Mayflower over to

59th Street and up to First Avenueand 71st Street. Being out of shape, like I was, I quickly developed shinsplints and vowed to get myself intobetter shape. It was practicallyimpossible to get up to the policelines, as spectators were 3 and 4deep, but, eventually, we were able toget up there and held the Taconicsign highabove ourheads in the

hope thatone of "our"r u n n e r s

w o u l dsee it.

(Ac tually, JimMcDermott held thesign and if his legs didn't hurt, surelyhis arms did!)

Sometimes, I remember toask my runner what he will bewearing for the race, but I have beenknown to forget that, and then I justlook for someone in a white T-shirt.(Did you ever notice? All the runnerswear white T-shirts.) From strainingto catch someone I recognize fromamongst the hundreds and thousandsthat pass by, I develop a stiff neck.Between the three of us (Pat, Jimmyand me) we do manage to see quite afew Taconic ruimers, and some evencaught c*ir eyes and we cheered andscreamed and they acknowledge ourpresence. No joy can describefinding YOUR runner and havingthem see you. Poor Jim is stillholding the sign up and also holdinghis camera above the crowd andtaking pictures of as many TRRCmembers as he can, hoping that hegets them and not just the top of theirheads. It is very hard to judge whereyour runner is, as it is the middle ofthe race, and you don't really knowwhere in the pack (of tens of thousands of runners) he or she is. Youtry to get a feel for the pace of therunners that are passing, and compute times for your runner. Youalways hope they are doing well, soyou try to watch about 10 minutes

before you expect them. As the hourdraws near and you still haven'tspotted them, you begin to worry. . .Are they hurt? Did you miss them?Where are they? And, as usual, along they come, but you are a wreckby the time you see them!

Finally, we see Howie andFred and embark on our journey tothe second sighting spot. Of course, when you arrive, you arc not sure ifthey passed yet. You try to recognizeother runners, and you do, but youcan't remember where you saw themin relationship to the people you wantto see. Since we were looking for somany runners (especially our husbands), we couldn't remember if wesaw these people before, in-between,or after our men. Eventually, stillstraining our necks, still holding thesign, and still trying to take picturesof anyone we knew, we spot themagain. So, now it is on to the thirdand final vantage point: TheMayflower Hotel.

But, it takes a long time forthem to appear. They have to finish, which always takes longer as themiles add up. Then they must gothrough the chutes, collect theirbelongings from the bus, and slowly, hobble back to the hotel. It is sowonderful to see them. We hug andkiss and forget how wet and smellythey are.

Now we can caterto them and their needs

.and congratulate all the'fine runners and tell

everyone wesaw that we

saw them and Ifind out if any of them sawus. We commiserate with their painand listen again and again howmarathons are stressful and not worththe anxiet>', but we know we will allbe back again next year. We areproud of the runners and sympatheticto their hardships and injuries andbattle stories, but just remember forthe next race: "They also serve whostand and wait - and wait - andw a i t ! "

ATaconic Hi ts The Borderby Bob Davis

Eleanor Robinson offers Bob encouragement. While visiting with relatives in Northern England for Christmas,

Eileen and I had the pleasure of joining with members of THE BORDER HARRIERS RUNNING CLUB at their annual dinner dance. Ihad joined the club during the year, and they were kind enough to extendan invitation to us. The dance was held at a small hotel in Wetheral, atown right on the border of Scotland. The dinner was an absolute feast, and we were graciously welcomed by all members. Once the "D.J."heard our American accents, the music quickly changed to "Bom In TheU.S.A." and a disco version of "God Bless America"! We were awardeda bottle of champagne for having travelled the furthest. A great nightindeed!

I also had the dubious pleasure of running my first race outsideof the United States. It was the "Festive Five" held on December 28th inCarlisle. I was greeted with a mixture of sleet and icy rain as I arrivedat the Sands Recreation Centre to check in and pick up my number forthe race. The first runner I met were Alex Kruger, who is Britain'sDecathlon Champion, and Eleanor Robinson. Mrs. Robinson is 46years old and has held 40 World Records for Ultra Distance racing! (Itwas at this point that Eileen suggested I fake an injury and leave quietlyvia the back door!) The records that Mrs. Robinson shattered were forraces ranging from 20 to 1,000 miles! She took part in her first Ultradistance race in 1982, During the 74 grueling miles, she managed tobreak 3 World Records for the 50K, 40 miles and 50 miles. Ten yearsago, she became the first woman ever to take part in the "Spartathlon," an historic Greek 250K race from Athens toSparta, run within 36 hours. In Australia, she became the only woman to have run more than 500 miles within 6days. In 1987, she set the World Record for both men and women in the strength-sapping, "Death Valley" race fromBadwater to the 14,000 ft. Mt. Whitney. It was a total of 146 exhausting miles in sweltering heat! She trains at 120miles per week, pushing her 2 year old son ahead of her!

Was this a five mile "fun run," or had I signed up for the Olympic Trials??Fortunately (?) the rain let up as we left the gym to head for the start. "Just a short jog to the starting line,"they said. It was then I realized how serious my predicament was, as the runners ahead of me covered the "short jog"of 1 1/2 miles doing a 7 minute pace! There I was at the start: gasping! I stood bedecked in racing shorts, proper

runnmg shoes, the "Taconic Road Runners" emblazoned across my chest and a New York City Marathon cap on myhead. Any similarity to a runner ended there. I meekly asked if there were any water stops. I was advised that "Wedrink out of the puddles over here!"

They all had a good laugh as I charged forward at the sound of the gun. You see, in England, the>' test thegun first to make sure it's working. Finally, on the second shot, we were off. Within the first 100 yards, everyonedisappeared from sight! I found myself very much alone, wondering just how I would find my way around thecourse! At the two mile mark, volunteers pointed me in the right direction and yelled, "Come On Yank!" I apologizedfor keepmg them out there so long. Along with Eileen and my cousins, the majority of the field were waiting for meat the finish cheering me along! (Eileen had a small American flag, but opted not to wave it around) Despite the factto I had run an amazing time of 39:28,1 placed 65th out of a field of 66 runners! I did, however, manage to beatMr. Johnny Walker, a 74 year old runner who is 16 years my senior. The winning time was 23:36. In my age groupthe \vmnmg time was 29:54, and in the over 65 group, it was 37:20. Eleanor Robinson fmished in 28:29.

It was a most humbling experience, to say the least, but it was great fun! It has made me more determined totram harder and not put my Cumbrian ancestors to shame. It was good that the dinner dance was held first. I don'tknow if I would have gone dancing and celebrating after such a race!

Masters Team UpdateBy Scott AbercrombieOn February 5th, the New York Road Runners Club had their annual dinner dance and awards ceremony at the

Mattan Club. We had a full table of Taconics with Erilca and Roy Abraham, Nick Caswell, Carol Hansen, CarmelloRoldan, new member Christine Thompson, my wife Michele, and me.Nick, Bob Hermesch and I, along with four others, were nominated for top runner in our age group, and Erikawas both nominated and selected as the top runner in her group. Congratulations Erika! Erika was presented with a

beautiful Tiffany bowl, as was Taconic, for winning the Men's Masters' Division in the NYRRC Grand Prix. The party was a lot of fun. We should think about going down next year with a larger group; particularly since

our women masters have also entered the grand prix this year.Incidentally, I'm planning on ordering engraved medals for all 28 members of last year's team. Hey, we won! Myrecords are not all that accurate, so you might want to ensure that I have your name if you ran any of the grd prix races

m the City last year, excluding the Marathon.I ve heard rumblings that some may feel intimidated by the number of strong runners on our team. Yes, the team

has depth, and it never hurts my feelings any to win, however: running ability is not even a concern! We all train andrace harder when we have friends to run with, and team spirit adds more dimension to the sport and it sustains us whenthe conditions are tough. By being there and having a good time, you make the team stronger. So please let me know ifyou would like to participate in some of the team races in the City this year. The schedule is listed above.

TRRC "Pumphouse Training Runs" To Resume In March

W i t

A few hardy souls (or is thatsoles?) perservered with long runs at thepumphouse through snow and sleet and ice, however, the club encouraged runners toplay it safer (note: it wasn't always safe) atFDR Park for winter running. Rich Nashannounced that the club would try to startsetting out water for long runs from thePumphouse starting again this month.Members take turns setting out water.Contact Rich at 248-6666 to volunteer.

This map shows where the Saturday morning group runs begin. We start atthe North side of the Gate House Bridge onRoute 129 in Yorktown. It's easy to get to.There's plenty of parking (unless snowremoval is still a problem).

Directions: From the TaconicParkway, exit at Underbill Avenue andhead Southwest toward Croton. Turn leftat Route 129 (Old Croton Lake Road). Goapproximately 1.5 miles to the Gate HouseBridge.

In Loving Memory ofM Y R A A D A M S K I

August 7, 1946 - February 20, 1994

Myra Adamski, wife of Richie Adamski, was a friend of many members of Taconic RoadRunners Club. As Richie said in his eulogy, shehad "uncommon valor" in her 11 year battle withcancer. She fought with such courage anddetermination that many who knew her well neverrealized she had cancer until the last months ofher life. The following prayer was shared withher fnends, in her memory:

God saw you were getting tired. And a cure was not to be.

So he put his arms around youAnd whispered, "Come to me."

With tearful eyeswe watched you.

And saw you pass away.Although we loved you dearly. We could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,Hard working hands at rest.

God broke our heartsto prove to us.

He only takes the best.
