And so starts the September (years) of thisadministration...more (or less) in November.

Water, water all around us, but nary a drop todrink! Some reports had this past Saturday morning'sPump House Gang at 65 so, if we take 2-6 oz. cups ofwater each, multiplied by 2, divided by your MHR of180, we'll need a minimum of 5 gallons of H20 andICQ cups just for the mail box stop! Speaking ofMHR's, RNR's and HRM (heart rate monitors), nicearticle Greg, but don't those chest straps came in anyother colors?

Looking back on the "HOT ONES" ofsummer...the Putnam Classic on July 4th wascapsulized best by the North County News headline -A Diamond in the Rough - (see article) Luis' (JanPeek) 5K had 172 new faces for this first-time event, and the Diamond was shining again down NorthDivision Street; the NYRRC Club TeamChampionship was true to it's name as a "HOTONE "--Congrats to the 60ish TRRCers and, of course, the Men's Masters for their 4th consecutive 1st placefinish and the Women's Masters and Men's Seniorsfor their 2nd place finishes! The Lake Mahopac lOKwas...well... a true sign that this club could run(manage) a race blindfolded - thanks to all inattendance for their patience and all the helpers fortheir "quick Plan B thinking," which is required whenthe school, track, bathrooms (in no particular order ofpriority) are not opened until 10 minutes before thescheduled start; TRRC's Long-Pond (Joe H. will attestto just how long it is) Biathlon had 72 Tri-Fed loyalsand, of course, pies and cookies to the winners; thePhelps' 5 course got a last minute rethink, I think -RD Myles O'Rhodes said it was a good one though.

On the sched': as we go to press, a busy week(3 in l)~Sunday, Sept. 4th the "Real" (17th annual)Jan Peek lOK; Monday, Sept. 5th, the Madd Dash inRheinbeck 5-lOK-worth the ride-PR?; Saturday, Sept.lOth, St. John's Lake Mahopac 5M (and 49th birthdaycelebration); then one (not so full) week of rest andthe Pepsi JDF 5K scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17-you should keep a ? mark next to it, there is only a50/50 chance of it happening as we speak-but, for allyou Pump-House-Let's-Go-For-Three (hours that is),now's your chance for a training check-up at theDutchess Half (plus), which will definitely be onSunday, Sept. 18th—I hear competitive cookingchallenges for TRRC's post-race party are all readyunderway...ain't we got fiin!

Taper in October at the Meisler run, date anddistance non-exacta!

See ya* out there!Fredy Low

HEART RATE MONITORING I IA N D M A R AT H O N T I D B I T S

The first article described a method for calculating the heart ranges that utilized the resting heart rate. Theother method for calculating the ranges uses just the maximal heart rate and therefore has wider ranges. I askedDr. Owen Anderson of Running Research News and Runners World what he used and he prefered the methodbased just on maximal heart rate. There is no scientific basis for using either one, but the MHR only method ismore easily linked to VOsmax measurements, the most valuable parameter in determining pacing. So use theeasier method - just take a percentage of your maximum heart rate to determine ranges.

Heart rates are affected by environmental factors in conjunction with running speed, fitness level, terrainand general health (i.e. overtrained). When the temperature is high, you become dehydrated faster and yourbody temperature is higher; both factors contribute to higher heart rates. As we run through the fall similarefforts will raise heart rates to lower levels, so we need to adjust our runs accordingly. We can and should trainfaster in the cooler weather - it didn't take a genius to figure this out - just keep it in mind.

The tempo run is targeted at your lactate threshhold level. Tempo runs increase your muscles' ability toclear lactate so that the speed at which you are just comfortable increases. Since you run a marathon at justbelow (slower than) the lactate threshhold, raising this level will improve your marathon time. These runs lastabout 20-25 minutes (after a mile plus warmup) and are done at about 90 percent of your MHR. This pace isabout 10-15 seconds slower than your lOK pace (with similar terrain and weather).

Downhill running can be improved (and most of us need this around here) just by watching your heart rateas you run downhill. Run flat at a certain pace (try race pace) and then try to keep your heart rate at the samelevel as you go downhill. You will likely be running faster than you think you should, but in fact you are notoverextending yourself. If you do this in a race you'll be passing people on the downhill. By the same token, onthe uphill (especially early in a race) don't allow your HR to rise much on the uphill. The people that pass youwill see you later. Late in the race you can push it as much as you can, but save it early on.

Treadmill running is a good way to get used to certain paces. You might have read that you should put yourtreadmill at one percent grade to give the equivalent of running outside where there is wind resistance toovercome. But if you run in a warm, humid club with no fan the pace on the treadmill is more equivalent to thesame pace outdoors. Dr. Anderson puts his treadmill at one percent grade since he usually works out in a cool, dry environment, and he says most studies reported using treadmills are in such environments. So he agreesthat in the usual club environment, you can consider the treadmill pace equivalent to the same pace outdoors.

MARATHON TIDBITS; TAPER. I've said this before, don't do a 22 mile run one or two weeks before animportant race or marathon. IT WON'T HELP. Carbo load 3 days before the race and drink, drink, drink untilyou can't stand it anymore. Practice this before long races and long runs. KNOW YOUR MARATHON PACEOR HEART RATE. Know how fast you want to run by using about 87 percent of MHR as a judge or know yourexpected marathon time. Then go out at that pace and stay there. If you feel good in the second half, go faster.Too fast too early and the last six (and maybe the last 13) will be more hellish than necessary. To predict yourmarathon pace use your recent best lOK (similar terrain and weather if possible) and multiple by 4.66. Or use a1/2 marathon, double the time and add 6.6. These figures will get you a good pace for the first 20 miles. It willget you to the end if you have the strength from long runs and have eaten properly beforehand and drankenough throughout. A 44 minute lOK runner is predicted to run at a 7:53 pace in a marathon. Based on a 1:401/2 marathon, expect about the same (7:53). And since you don't ordinarily run this pace in training, practiceit: it will help your biomechanics to have run at this pace before. Do 3 miles now and work up to 10 miles atthis pace 2 weeks before the marathon.

As a summary: take a 44 minute lOK runner expected to run a 3:25 marathon (7:53 pace). She should dolong runs at 60-75% of her MHR, tempo runs at 90% or about a 7:20 pace for 20-25 minutes, practicemarathon pace runs at about 7:48 or 87% MHR. These are approximations, but you can find what's right foryou .

The Fourth Of July - Putnam County ClassicBy Fredy Low

Every American looks forward to a picture-perfectday on the 4th of July to celebrate our nation's birthday. The1994 edition was worth our anticipation, and, of course, aphoto or two.

The Classic, in its 22nd year, is Taconic's oldestrace, with great tradition and loyalt}' from the HudsonValley's runners. We are pleased to have the support ofPutnam County Savings Bank, C-Tec Cable TV, andSparkles T-shirts as sponsors

Some 250 of the loyals toed the line at 8 A.M. atMahopac High School for the 8M loop around the lake.Having directed this race for a number of years now, I got tosay "Runners take your mark....," fired the cannon boom, andwith the other spectators headed toward the finish line withthe anticipation of a photo fmish.

This year would be different. 1 decided to watch theaction first-hand in the lead car. With the help of Pat, John,Joe, Lee, Carol, Nancy, Larry and others to start the race, Iwas able to hop in the "top down" with Norma and Justinfor the grand tour. Myles O'Rhodes gave us the play-by-

play for C-Tcc TV in the video car.

/) The lead changed hands some five_ or six times in the early miles. Ken Pfafftook a hundred meter lead through Myrtle Avenue

into the 2nd mile, but the hill on Route 6N brought thepack back on his heels, and by the time they reached the topof the hill and the first water stop, Pat Colon, LarryPhillips, Nick Caswell, Matt Wiliaras and Greg Diamondwere all challenging for the lead.

As the race proceeded through Mahopac Villagearound the 3 mile mark. Matt Williams, the President of theMid-Hudson Road Runners Club, seemed surprised to be inthe lead. Having placed third for the past two years, heconfided later that, when you find yourself in this position, your only objective is to run away from everyone.

His plan seemed to be working for the next fewmiles, but closing the gap around the 5 1/2 mile mark wasnone other than Greg Diamond. This was Greg's first 4th ofJuly Classic - and not because he was always out of town orunable to run in past years, but because Greg is Taconic'sofficial computer race scorer, and considered it too difficultto run and score; however, with the help of his wife, Nancyat the keyboard, he was now able to be out there challengingfor the lead.

Folks, this is when being in the lead car really is afront row seat on the action. Diamond made his move onthe downhill by the Old Forest house, passing Williams atabout the 6 mile mark. Matt tried valiantly to take it back, but, as Greg attested to later, when I finally passed him, Ijust ran for my life because I didn't know how much he hadleft. As the North County News described it, it was a"Diamond in the Rough" with Greg's own brand offireworks displayed at the finish in a time of45:31; Matt Williams hung in there for 2ndplace: 14 seconds later; Nick Caswell at 44,took third in 46:18. The women's challenge, which unfortunately I didn't witness live, was won by Allesandra Lynch at 49:34; and LoriJorgensen, who has run (and won) no less than 18 of the22 Classics, pleased 2nd by :33 seconds; Theresa Cannon, also from the Mid-Hudson Road Runners, took thethird place women's honors in 52:51. John Albanese, running with Old Glory, made a colorful display as herounded the final turn of the track.

It was a great day for thePatriots, thanks again to ALL thevolunteers, I'm sure Kodak's stockwent up a click or so at this picture-perfect events.

Dr. PeteTo T h e R e s c u e

By Nick CaswellI could not walk at all. Thirty miles in thirty hours

resulted in a severe bruising of my big toe nail. I wasdown. A sympathetic friend said, "Call the good doctor."I made the phone call and nervously requested a homevisit. The good doctor came. Marie Brennan's hauntingvoice calmed the house. Then the good doctor cut deep atthe layers of blackened nail of the big toe. The clear fluidoozed, releasing the pressure. The big toe was wrapped.Mission accomplished.

We chatted, exchanged war stories and dranksome Newcastle Brown Ale. The good doctor left. MarieBrennan had finished, and so, I watched an old western onAMC. Two Advils, a good night's sleep, and I feeloptimistic again.

Thanks, Pete.

1994 Track SeriesBy Tony Galfano

It was a rainy, wet evening... wellthat's the way the last night of the trackseries ended when 3 runners had to finish

up the 5000 meter race to complete theseries. Aside from this night, the Thursday night races turned into a hot/humidtrack series. Doug Miller pulled outahead quickly in the series but then tookhis racing to Syracuse's Empire StateGames. He came back to win the tackseries with (3410) points, this is 3 in arow for Doug. Working hard to get backinto shape was Roy Armeson (3180) andnext came Roger Efraimsen with (2690)

points. On the masters side, NickCaswell got a scare in the 100 meter dashand had to ease off a bit, but he stilloutscored the rest with (2900) points.Pleased to complete the series butwondering what 1 can do to run faster, I'lltake the (2800) points and be happy.Behind me in third place was MikeBillmon with (2540) points. Mike and 1could make a good team if he ran thesprints and 1 ran the longer distances!

On the ladies side, Lee Sarokenenjoyed her first track series completingall events with 1100 points. Marika

Sickenger would have been there tochallenge but just did not complete allthe events. Also special recognition toboth John Orr and Joe Ilandelman torcompeting in all events this year.

Roy Armeson hopes to put togetherthe track series again next year. He istrying to get the Yorktown High School,Hendrick Hudson and possibly SomersHigh School tor the series. Anyoneinterested in helping and promoting thetrack series please give me a call at737-6435 .

Jan Peek 5KGreg Diamond & Alessandra Lynch Winners Again

By Luis GuerraAfter winning the 8 mile Putnam County Classic in Mahopac on Independence Day, Greg Diamond returned on

Sunday to nip Dougie Miller in the premier Jan Peek 5K. His winning time was 16:56 for the 3.1 mile course, only 3seconds ahead of Miller.

At about the half-way mark, Miller enjoyed a fifty meter lead over his closest pursuer, and Dr. Diamond wasrunning at 5th or 6th. Diamond put together a great kick at the end to over take Miller.

Alessandra Lynch aslo continued to sparkle, as she watched the same double as Diamond: winning at Mahopacand Peekskill.

The big difference was that Alessandra's competition was not as close. She won by two minutes and 43 secondsover 16 year old Linda Liu.

Third place for men went to Scott Abercrombie (after working all night and running a race the previous day).Lee Saroken was third among the women.

The race went veiy smoothly thanks to the cooperation of Taconic Road Runners Club, City of Peekskill PoliceDepartment, Fire Department, Ambulance Corps and New Balance. Also, don't forget the volunteers. Without them, therace would not have been possible. Special thanks go to Art Baisley, the master mind behind the race. He did more thanwas asked of him and beyond, and for someone who never organized a race before, he did a super Job. Thank you.

Lake Mahopac 10K - July 30, 1994Giving It 85%

By Tom ChurchIt may not be everything Francis Burdett had,

but it did the trick, With a heart rate monitor stappedaround his chest, Burdett went two for two in four yearsat the Lake Mahopac lOK, and left the rest of the fieldfar in arears by the time he passed the five mile mark, all the while keeping his heart rate in check

Burdett went out with the main pack and letAlfonso Rendon take it out. Others threw in theirsurges and held onto the lead, including Patrick Colon, but all were facing the inevitable. They probably did notknow it, but they were outclassed by someone runingbehind them. Burdett pulled into first place just afterthree miles and kept pulling away to win by 59 secondsover Steve Cal idonna

On the women's side, Alyssa Lifrieri provedthe hills arc not as bad as they appear. In fact, theydid not slow her down much at all. Lifrieri was neverchallenged by runner-up Janet DeCarlo, so she wasup against herself and the course. Neither of theseseemed to be a challenge either, as she cracked 40minutes for the first time this year.

Pete Corsino paced the Masters men in atime of 38:21, winning by only eight seconds, andLee Saroken paced the women Masters, taking fourtho v e r a l l .

Upon ending, I would like to thank those whopicked up the slack and pitched in as loyal Taconics.

When The Going Gets Tough(...And The Tough Can't GetGoing)By Erika Abraham

We all know the saying, When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Well, I am one "tough cookie" whocouldn't get going.

The year started off with promises of more goodcompetitive running. However, this was short-lived. Withone race into the New Year behind me, my running came toan abrupt end on January 30 with a painful foot injury.Down and out time!

After too many weeks of not being able to run, mysanity was tested to the limit. It was not until early Marchthat I could resume pounding the pavement, albeit lightly.Although trepidations were many, I successfully completedthe Boston Marathon in April, thinking that this was thestart of more good running times. This elation also wasshort- l ived.

The cold, snowy days of winter were replaced withbudding days of Spring. A pattern soon developed as thesenew growths of Spring came into being. Pollen reignedsupreme, while my running took a nose-dive. My allergieshit me hard; the worst I'd ever experienced.

In races, I just "didn't have it." After a mile or two, breathing became labored and uncomfortable, and my legsfelt sluggish. It was tough going. Training runs were nobetter. Wheezing replaced rhythmic breathing. Previouslyeasy hills became formidable mountains. My chest felt soreafter each run. Every race became a battle between me andnature's elements. Nature claimed the victory.

The more I tried to run, the worse I felt. The worseI felt, the more depressed I became. I was stymied. Runners HAVE to run! These battles with Mother Nature tooktheir toll. It became an all-out war against allergies.

The truth of the matter was that I couldn't go on thisway. Race times were off, while breathing problems wereon the rise. I knew that I was tough, but this was ridiculous.

In desperation, I turned to an allergy specialist tohelp me with these tough times. While currently undergoingallergy/medical tests, I am still plodding along trying to getback the zip that was zapped.

One consolation is that I can always THINKSNOW! I When running times are really hard, I shift gearsand think about the pollen-free days of winter, the refreshingcool, crisp air that abounds, and the cushioning feel of asnowfa l l .

I suspect that my competitive spirit won't be on holdfor too long. "Tough times don't last, but tough people do."

Submitted by Tom ChurchTo say "the first time on the starting line was

rough around the edges" might be putting it a bit mildly. As with anything Taconic is involved in, though, thingsnaturally smoothed themselves out. (Unfortunately, notcompletely until ten minutes before the start.)

I was hoping to run so I could see what thecourse was like under race conditions. . .a good way tospot necessary changes for the next time around. But Idecided I would have to trust the opinions of the 40 pluspeople running in the race.

At the start, I asked them to relate their opinionsof the course and other such comments to me at thefinish. I think the faces were more teling than the words. With a big smile on her face, our last finisher said shewould never do it again. She may have missed a turn, but I have a feeling she enjoyed Ae trek through thewoods. The general opinion appeared to be to do itagain. There are some things to work on, such as theprizes and the bugs, but we will be back. Let's just hopewe don't suffer the sophomore jinx.

The CHALLENGE of the SEVEN HILLSIn Rome they ore called Palatine, Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline,Caelian and Aventine. For modern gladiators, the names are: Quaker Bridge,Canopus, "Cujo", White, Sunset, Tinker and Bryant Pond. The hills includedin the Challenge of the Seven Hills have been chosen because they arelong and steep. The Challenge is simply stated, however the simplicily masks the difficulty. The object is to run up each of the SEVEN HILLS as fast as possible.Challengers will meet at Downing Park at 7:30am on Sunday, November 20, 1994.Challengers will be divided into groups and car pools will be organized tomimimize the number of cars involved. Each carload of Challengers will be givena map, directions and a score sheet. Start and Stop lines will have been drawnat the base and the crest of each hill. Challengers will record their own timesfor each climb on the score sheet. Travel time between hills is NOT counted

(this Is a hill challenge, not a Grand Prix.) When all SEVEN HLLS have beenconquered, the Challengers will reconvene at Downing Park where the overall"King" and "Queen" of the Hills will be determined.Special commemorative long-sleeved T-shirts will be earned by eachsuccessful Challenger. The overall time limit from start to completion is 3.5 hours. Not surprisingly, there will be refreshments back at Downing Park. Challengers MUST providetheir own timing, water and transportation to and between the hills. Designateddrivers are OK. There will be no traffic control or course aid in any manner.Due to the fact that the roads are narrow and we will cause considerable

congestion ourselves, the number of Challengers may be limited. The overall distance from bottom to top is 5.95 miles. Quaker Bridge is .6M,"Cujo" is 1.0M, Tinker .65, Bryant Pond Road .7, Sunset Hill .8, White Hill .55,and the topper is Canopus Hill at 1.65M.The entry fee is $10. NO POST ENTRIES. Entry deadline is November 13.The Race Director, Myles O'Rhodes, reserves the right to limit the field to 500.

By signing this release I understand that the usual legal stuff applies. If I'm dumb enough to run up these hills, I take that risk myself. TRRC Chccks toi TRRCcouldn't possibly be responsible for my stupidity should I be injured or n Rr»v QQdrop dead. After all. TRRC just paints the lines and collects the times. r-U.dOX yyand surely that's not enough to put them on the hook for my funeral Baldwin Placeexpenses. Also, my family has been instructed that if I keel over and |.|Y inROF,die. there's no big payoff, so they'll still hove to count on winning ' lUDUDthe lottery.

T h e S e c r e t

By Myles 0'Rhodes;Tryles O'Rhodes

Beginning in September 1993 up through August 1994, I've had the gloriousgood fortune to have run eleven personal records (PR's) at distances ranging from100 meters to the marathon. A mrniber of people have asked me: "Who is it thatyou, a certified old fart, can be running such PR's? What is THE SECRET?"

At first, I told them it was because I lost some weight, which was true, butnot the whole story. Of course, in my case, I had the distinct advantage of

starting out with lousy old PR's, so running new ones was somewhat easier for me. Earlier this year, I began trainingwith a heart rate monitor, a usefiil took but, again, that's not the whole story. I used the ". .because it's Spring.."response for a few months, but I had to change my story after the summer solstice. Maybe it was the Saturday longruns at the Pump House, or was it the ice cream topped pancakes afterward? Could it be the Tuesday track sessionsand Luis's coaching? New shoes? Tight shorts? Maybe it was something I read in Runners World? Not! Certainly, there are a lot of contributing factors.

Yeah, but what is THE SECRET? I didn't have any more of a clue than anyone else. However, I think I nowknow what it is, and so do you. John Parker revealed THE SECRET in his book Once A Runner:

"What was the secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways, they wanted to know THE SECRET. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared to believe that it had not so much to do with chemicals andzippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heart-rending process of removing, molecule bymolecule, the very tough runner that comprised the bottoms of his training shoes. The Trial of Miles; Miles ofTr i a l s . "

Many other club members joined us.

Comment: This race was for double points in the NYRRC GrandPrix Series. The Taconic Masters Men have extended their leadover the second place team, Witholds (NYC). The latter onlyplaced fifth in this race. Runners' Edge Striders of Long Islandand Millrose AC, who place second and third, repectively, in therace, are well down in the standings. This bodes well for TRRC.We should hold our own i the Autumn, especially in the crosscountry races i VanCortlandt Park. However, Tl needs to build alead, because the New York Marathon also counts as a doublepoints race. In the past, we have never done well as a team in theNYC Marathon. Three runners under 3 hours would help us alot.I believe West Side Y (NYC) were the first place masters teamin the metropolitan area last year. They had three men under2:50!

the volunteers - space and my memory limits my ability to name all of you - the road crew, great traffic control, registration - everything went well, the transition ad finish line people - fantastic. To the sixty-four finishers, you didit, a greeat event with a number of familiar faces. From what I heard: weather fine, water was great and the runnersenjoyed the mexed terrain.

John Albanese did it again: the repeat make open winner. Joanne Gelsi, one of the perennial top finisherspulled off first place in the female open division after finishing second last year. We returned to awarding pies andcookies again this year at the equest of the participants, and they liked it. Taconic continues to do things runners andswimmers l i ke .

This year we had our first relay team - it was unofficial and spontaneous - Peter Meisler and Susan Solowhave set a precedent. If there is an interest in adding a relay division, let me, or better yet the Board, know. I'm opento try it if there's enough interest and it will beef up participation, and I continue to receive the quality support I'vehad these two years.
