* TACONIC RUNNING LIFE NOVEMBER 1994 T * R * R * C * CHURCH, HANSEN, GLYNN WIN SHORT GRAND PRIX B Y G R E G D I A M O N D Tom Church edged me out to win the Men's Grand Prix 1994 no matter how many ways I recalculated the numbers with my computer. T h i s w a s n ' t t r u e f o r t h e women however, as the c a n c e l l a t i o n o f t h e E d n a Fauser Brown lOK, the last Grand Prix race, caused top honors to go to two women - Carol Hansen and Kale Glynn. When the rules were first set up. runners would be scored based on their five top scores out of seven possible races. Had we known only six races would be run, we probably would have used the top four scores. Carol Hansen was the top scoring woman using the top five scores and Kate Glynn was the top woman using four scores. The accompanying results use the top five. With the Dutchess 1/2 M a r a t h o n t h e l a s t o f t h e series Tom had to run his best 1/2 marathon ever, a distance he had not raced seriously before, to lake over first place. My three second margin was not enough to keep my lead and he won by less than one point. Tom was the only runner to run all six races. Only six runners ran at least 5. Carol, a relative newcomer to racing, became the first grandmother to win the Grand Prix and the 40-49 age group. Tom is not married and has no children (not that we know of), but he won the 20-29 year age group in a walk, To be listed in the results, runners had to run at least 3 of the races. OM iously. we are disappointed with the low- turnout in the Grand Prix series. Many masters runners would have competed more, except there were many conflicts with NYRRC grand prix races. The mens and w o m e n s m a s t e r s t e a m s , among the best in the area, gave up their chance for individual glor)' at our races for team glory, not like Tom and 1. But then, the mens open team has been rather thin lately, and our club is an "older" club. As has been mentioned in our meeting by the mens champion, we should be bringing in younger runners to our club as they are the future of our s p o r t . T h e w o m e n ' s champion has done her job well, how about the men's champion? See Page 3 for full Grand Prix results. As I take pen in hand for my final time (actually it's akeyboard-this is the '90s ya'know!), 01' Blue Eyes'song, And so, the end is near...J^J> keeps runningthrough my mind. For those of you not able to attendthe November club meeting (Wednesday, November 9)for the official transfer of the gavel or (say it isn't so)the dinner dance (Friday, November 18th) to hear thisoutgoing president say, "Thanks, it's been a fun run,"well thanlb for the opportunity to work with all ofyou; I've truly enjoyed it.

As with most organizptionsy 80% of the workis done by 20% of its members , and TRRC is nodifferent, Soy thanksy especially to you 20%ers - youknow who you are; you*re the one with the water cupshouting encouragement; you*re the one with theroad flag keeping our race course safe; you're theone clicking the crominiXy scoring the race, organizing TRRC's teams to wear the green andwhite at "away" competitions; you're the one doingthe monthly meeting summariesy keeping the books inordery and you're the one doing this newsletter.

I leave the office with TRRC in fine shape-membership is consistent if not up a few (I'm alwaysseeing new faces); weekly training events, from trackworkouts to Wednesday night group runs; to thealways-popular Pump House Gang, are all in goodorder and, after the bills are paid, we've even got afew dollars left in the kitty.

I accepted this responsibility as a "give back"to a sport that has been very good to me and myfamily (more correctly, to Pat and I, although Erik at25 and Suzi at 24 are getting closer to understandingthe "why" in the why we do this.) But, the end resulthas been more of a "got back" than a "give." I'velearned a great deal about just people. Even though,as it was said to me one evening recently, we're avery diverse group Taconic, we're all just people! Some doctors, housewives, farmers, lawyers, even asalesman or two! But, on Wednesday afternoons orSaturday mornings, or when we toe ±e line at Sundayraces, none of that matters, only that you made it, toshare, enjoy, compete and belong. Think of howmany miles you'd do every Saturday morning or speedlaps on Tuesday if no one else showed up. So, that'sbeen the fun run, doing my little part in organizingpeople to just show up.

SOy thanks TaconiCy upward & upward, andespecially to the 20%ers - you've all made me veryproud to serve.

See ya' out there!Fredy Low

n|I A Repor t On The Team.. .C The Taconic Women's Masters Team has sent

runners to the last three events sponsored by NYRRC.In August, at the Back To Work 4 Mile Race, MelanieBenvenue (2nd age group), Kate Glynn (3rd agegroup), Carol Hansen and Lee Saroken (2nd age group)all participated, to give Taconic a 2nd place finish.

In September, Kate Glynn took a 1st age groupwin, Joanne Bertram took a 5th age group prize andLee Saroken took a 2nd age group award at the IsolaCross Country 4 Miler. The course was a double loopthat included two trips up Cemetery Hill! TRRC got aFIRST place Team Finish for this race. Hurray!

October brought the Women's Half Marathonon the 15th. Our team included Melanie, Kate, Lee,Donna Cavalieri and Carolyn Subin. The clash between TAconic and Millrose was very close, and theresults (due to computer breakdown at the race) areunknown as of press-time for TRL, but.. .to be continued! Individual awards were won by Melanie (2nd agegroup), Kate (3rd age group) and Lee (1st age group).Donna and Carolyn had GREAT times and, as usual,we all had lots of laughs, miles and fun.

With 2 events left for this year's scoring,Millrose has a sizeable lead over us. The limitednumber of Women's Master Runners from Taconicentered in the NYCity Marathon limits our hopes ofout-scoring Millrose, but, on the "any given day"principle, who knows what can happen.

In December, the 10 Miler in Central Park willbe our last event of the calendar year. If anyone isinterested in joining us for this race, which is both amen's and women's event, please call Lee at (914) 741-2408. Happy Running!

2nd Annual "Lowtv Loop"

By Kafy D. QuinnHow did the "Lowry Loop" get its start? That's a

question ! asked co-founder Kevin Lowry. He didn't havean answer. Like a lot of the fun times enjoyed by laconics, some folks thought it would be fun, tried it, liked it, andrepeated it! Hence, Labor Day 1994 saw 10 Jovial Taconicsassemble early in the morning at the pumphouse and set offon an out and back course to "the mailboxes." Some ofthose who had participated in the 1993 running of theLowry Loop sported their '93 race singlets. All of thosewho ran this year were rewarded with appropriate "glassw a r e . "

This event enjoys no formal endorsementnorfinanacial sponsorship from TRRC. Kevin and DonnyLowry give it all it's smiling sponsorship. This year, overallwinners of this unique event were rewarded with gold, silver and bronze keys, entitling them to access to continuedmerry making! The refreshments, including a ratherunorthodox beverage at the "water" stop and contents ofkeepsake glasses afterward, were provided by the events'n a m e s a k e s .

I had the opportunity to look through a photocollection of the '93 event - very interesting! I am pleased

J to have these two photos to publish, Kevin "thinks" GregDiamond was holding the camera. Good job, Greg. Thesehave been approved for the general audience!

Winners of the 1994 Lowry Loop, left to right:Vinnie Juliano (3rd), Rick Salcmmo (2nd) and DaveO'Toole (1st).

Smile for the camera following the Lowr\' Loop, are participants (back, left to right):Bill Foley, Carmelo Roldan, Vinnie Juliano, Donny1 owry. Howie Solow, Kevin Lowry. Jack Magrone. (and front): Donny Lutrick (with Nike). Rick Salemmo and Dave O' loole.

set up. runners would bescored based on their five topscores out of seven possibleraces. Had we known onlysix races would be run, weprobably would have used thetop four scores. Carol Hansenwas the top scoring womanusing the top five scores andKate Glynn was the topwoman using four scores.

The accompanying resultsuse the top five.

C a r o l , a r e l a t i v enewcomer to racing, becamethe first grandmother to winthe Grand Prix and the 40-49

age group. Tom is notmar r ied and has no ch i ld ren

Obviously, we aredisappointed with the lowt u r n o u t i n t h e G r a n d P r i xseries. Many masters runnerswould ha\c competed more,except there were manyconflicts with NYRRC grandprix races. The mens andw o m c n s m a s t e r s t e a m s ,

As I take pen in hand for my final time (actually it's akeyboard-this is the '90s ya'know!), 01' Blue Eyes'song, J* And so, the end is near...J>J* keeps runningthrough my mind. For those of you not able to attendthe November club meeting (Wednesday, November 9)for the official transfer of the gavel or (say it isn't so)the dinner dance (Friday, November 18th) to hear thisoutgoing president say, "Thanks, it's been a fun run,"well thanks for the opportunity to work with all ofyou; I've truly enjoyed it.

As with most organizations^ 80% of the workis done by 20% of its members , and TRRC is nodifferent. So, thankSy especially to you 20%ers - youknow who you are; you're the one with the water cupshouting encouragement; you're the one with theroad flag keeping our race course safe; you're theone clicking the crominix, scoring the race, organizing TRRC's teams to wear the green andwhite at "away" competitions; you're the one doingthe monthly meeting summariesy keeping the books inordery and you're the one doing this newsletter.

1 leave the office with TRRC in fine shape-membership is consistent if not up a few (I'm alwaysseeing new faces); weekly training events, from trackworkouts to Wednesday night group runs; to thealways-popular Pump House Gang, are all in goodorder and, after the bills are paid, we've even got afew dollars left in the kitty.

1 accepted this responsibility as a "give back"to a sport that has been very good to me and myfamily (more correctly, to Pat and I, although Erik at25 and Suzi at 24 are getting closer to understandingthe "why" in the why we do this.) But, the end resulthas been more of a "got back" than a "give." I'velearned a great deal about just people. Even though,as it was said to me one evening recently, we're avery diverse group Taconic, we're all just people! Some doctors, housewives, farmers, lawyers, even asalesman or two! But, on Wednesday afternoons orSaturday mornings, or when we toe ie line at Sundayraces, none of that matters, only that you made it, toshare, enjoy, compete and belong. Think of howmany miles you'd do every Saturday morning or speedlaps on Tuesday if no one else showed up. So, that'sbeen the fun run, doing my little part in organizingpeople to just show up.

Soy thanks Taconicy upward & upwardy andespecially to the 20%ers - you've all made me veryproud to serve.

2nd Annual "Lowry Loop"

By Katy D. QuinuHow did the "Lowry Loop" get Its start? That's a

question I asked co-founder Kevin Lowry. He didn't havean answer. Like a lot of the fun times enjoyed by Taconics, some folks thought it would be fun, tried it, liked it, andrepeated it! Hence, Labor Day 1994 saw lOJovial Taconicsassemble early in the morning at the piimphouse and set offon an out and back course to "the mailboxes." Some ofthose who had participated in the 1993 running of theLowry Loop sported their '93 race singlets. All of thosewho ran this year were rewarded with appropriate "glassw a r e . "

This event enjoys no formal endorsementnortlnanacial sponsorship from TRRC.

1 had the opportunity to look through a photocollection of the '93 event - very interesting! 1 am pleasedto have these two photos to publish. Kevin "thinks" GregDiamond was holding the camera. Good job, Greg. Thesehave been approved for the general audience!

Winners of the 1994 Lowry Loop, left to right:Vinnie Juliano (3rd), Rick Salemmo (2nd) and DaveO'Too le ( l s t ) .

Smile for the camera following the Lowty Loop, are participants (back, left to right):Bill Foley, Carmelo Roldan, Vinnie Juliano. Donnyi owry. Howie Solow, Kevin Lowry, Jack Magrone, (and front); Donny Lutrick (with Nike). Rick Salemmo and Dave O' I oole.

We will not help.We should not help,We are the RUNNING ELITE!

A CommentFrom TheEcHtor...Last year, 70 Taconics

participated in the Dutchess CountyClassic. This year there were over100 of us! As someone who has runthe 5K, Half Marathon and Marathonat this event on various years, I wantt o s a y. . .

"Great job MHRRC. This isan extremely well-done event!

"Thanks, TRRC, for waitingto welcome me in after my Marathons. This year's was my slowest, but my welcome committee getsbetter every year.

"If you weren't one of themany TRRC'rs at this year's event, mark your calendar and plan to bethere next year!"

Ocean To Sound: Bridesmaids Again

1994 TRRC Men's Masters Relay Team at the Ocean To Sound Relay. Left to right back row: Nick Caswell.1 ony Galfano, Ken Filmanski, John Hallinan, Roger Cocking, Front row: Scott Aabercrcmbie, Joe Porcaro. PeteCorsino. Photo by Mike Bamow.

What does laconic Men's Masters Relay Team havein common with another well-known New Yorkteam? On September 25th, eight of us journeyed toJones Beach for the Ninth Annual Ocean To SoundRelay, and once again, like our slightly better knowncounterparts, we came out bridesmaids at an eventpatterned after laconic's own Manhattan to PeekskillRelay,

Word through the grapevine was that ourperennial conquerors. Hartford Track Club, werehaving difficulty fielding a team and were unusuallyweak. Finally, this seemed to be our year to win thatall or nothing $1,000 Master's first prize. True, wedid have some difficulty fielding a team ourselves. The line-up was not finalized until the night before, but then, Taconic has this kind of depth!

Pete Corsino ran a great first leg, butunfortunately, Hartford's lead-off man was evenbetter, and by the Hand-off, they already had overthree minutes lead. We figured they had frontloaded, and after Nick Caswell picked up half aminute or so on the second leg, it seemed a plausibletheory. My third leg put the theor>' on hold! ScottAbercrombie's fourth leg breathed a little flickeringlife into our hopes, but when Hartford's fourth man,Jim MacShane took off, we realized that they hadreloaded. We have never noticed anything weakabout his running! It was only a question of by how

much they would beat us, Tony Galfano, JohnHallinan. Joe Porcaro and Ken Filmanski all ran greatlegs, but were faced with an insurmountable lead. Our only hope was that Hartford might miss thecourse - they have done this before - but even so. wewere unable to beat them! Not even a chance thist i m e !

The Relay's overall winner was InsideTrack, an open team from Pennsylvania, with asparkling time of 4:16:27,1. Five other teams wereunder five hours, among them, fifth place HartfordMasters with a time of 4:56:33.5. Taconic Masterswas eight overall with a time of 5:04:45.3 Onemixed team. Super Runners Shop, and a corporateteam, Brookhaven National Lab were ahead of us.Warren Street Women's Open, the first women's teamwas in eleventh place with a fine time of 5:13:53,3,Altogether, there were 114 teams that included twowith physically handicapped members. ThePlainview - Old Bethpage Road Runners Club thatorganizes this event did its typically impressive job.The club really gets the community involved, obtainslots of sponsorship, and when it is all over, hosts anexcellent party we\here you can finally catch up withthe competition. The Hartford guys proved to bevery gracious winners. Alas, their wrinkles and grayhairs indicate that they may, indeed, be forty plus!

The Race for the CureTacon i c a t i t s F ines t

By Richard AdamskiHaving been a member of Taconic for 11 years,

I have become very familiar with the multiplepersonalities of the group. I have witnessed everythingfrom their competitive spirit to their partying spirit. However, on September 11, 1994, a day I will neverforget, the group participated in "The Race for the Cure"and, without question, they put their best foot forward.

The Race for the Cure was a fundraiser for theSusan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation which fundsbreast cancer research, education, screening andt r e a t m e n t .

Earlier this year, my wife, Myra, lost her 11 yearbattle with the disease. The group's participation in therace was the idea of my dear friends, Nancy Young, KateQuinn, Carol Hansen and Lee Saroken. I was moved totears when I learned from Nancy's husband, GregDiamond, that as a special tribute to my wife, the groupwas participating in the race under the team name of"TRRC for Myra".

While preparing for the race, the group quicklygrew from the original four to fifty-four, and a bus waschartered to take the group down to the city. The groupincluded some of my wife's non-running friends as wellas some of the male members of the club who camedown to provide support.

Kate designed a beautiful T-shirt bearing theteam's name,"TRRC for Myra" and included an outlineof a cala lilly, Myra's favorite flower. Three days prior tothe race, Nancy, Carol, Lee along with some help fromMyles O'RJiodes, set a PR for number of race packetspicked up for friends when they travelled to the city topick up 54 race packets. Although we all looked forwardto the race day with great anticipation, nothing couldhave prepared us for the emotional experiences of theday.

As our bus pulled up to the 67th Street entranceat Central Park, each of us was overwhelmed by the sightof thousands of women preparing for the race. As weunloaded the usual Taconic supplies (food, beer, wine, champagne, etc.), I was relieved to find President FredyLowe at my side. As a veteran of a number of Taconictrips to Central Park, he very quickly organized a searchparty to locate a suitable picnic area for the group, anddirected the logistics. 1 recall waiting at the curb withtwo aluminum tables, four three-foot hero sandwichesand two tubs of soda, beer and wine waiting for thesearch party to come back. I was amused that as I waswaiting, a number of people observed our Taconic

banner and one person commented "there"s Taconicagain!" I overheard another say "that Taconic groupreally knows how to party!"

As we established our picnic area, a number ofgroup pictures were taken (compliments of JackBrennan), and one could feel the emotion in the air as thegroup anticipated the start of the race/walk. Over 9,000walkers and runners lined up for the start. The Taconictalent ranged everywhere from Lori Jorgenson (whofinished sixth overall) to a group of my wife's friendswho walked through the 5K course. Participation in theactual race was restricted to women and male breastcancer survivors. While race participants were issuedwhite racing bibs, breast cancer survivors were issuedpink bibs and pink sun visors. As I waited for the race tobegin, 1 was awed by the number of pink bibs in thegroup and the realization of how many lives have beenaffected by this disease.

I cheered the group on as I proudly displayed myhome-made "TRRC for Myra" placard. I recall standingand saying silently "This is for you, Hun," without anydoubt in my mind that my wife could hear me. As thetears streamed down my cheeks, a number of folks fromour group stopped to give me a little hug of support.

As the race ended and we all congregated, therewas the strangest feeling in the air. You could tell thateveryone felt it...a special kinship. The tears and hugsbrought the club members closer to one another than atany time I can remember.

On the day following the race, I received anumber of calls from club members who wanted to talkof the previous day's experience, but we found it difficultt o d e s c r i b e .

On the next day, I received a note from a friendof Myra's who captured the spirit of the day for allparticipants.

D e a r R i c h a r d :

I was so pleased and proud to be a participant in "The Racefor a Cure" and the very special tribute to Myra. I enjoyed meetingthe TRRC members, the bus ride, the walk and the picnic. I wasproud to be part of the group and felt very welcome.

When we were walking and you were cheering us on forMyra I felt very moved. I also felt guilty as I walked. I am a nine-year cancer survivor and as I walked and participated throughout theday I asked myself, "Why?" What is the purpose of some survivingand many not surviving? Myra had your devotion and love and yetGod took her from her family and yet I have lived on.

I realized today that there is a real purpose to my life.Survivors have a responsibility to never forget the loved ones whohave pas.sed on and to live each day with a true spirit of love in allthey do. This day vvoi- a beautiful reminder of love and life.

Thank you for renewing my belief in love and life. Myraa very lucky lady...she had you. Many, many, (hanks...God

L ebow RememberedBy Steve Quinn

Many laconics remember NYRRC PresidentFred Lebow who recently completed his "last run." Ipersonally have three recollections of Fred.

1 remember first seeing him in the offices of theNYRRC in 1989. I was new to running, and seeing thelegend in person was a real treat.

In 1990,1 completed the New York City Marathon in about five hours (Moffitt asked that I run withhim.) When I arrived at the finish line, there was FredLebow, smiling, bearded, with his blue NYC marathonchapeau in place. "Congratulations," he said. I could notbelive it. I had seen previous marathons on TV, and Iknew that he rode in the lead car, but still, five hours later, here he was, caring enough about the middle and back ofthe packer to stay there and welcome each of us.

Later, after his first bout with cancer, I again metFred at the NYRRC Bagel run. I took that opportunity tobuy his book, and I asked him to autograph it, which hedid. I remember the bravery in his face. Cancer hadstripped him of much of his vitality and quickness, but hewas there for the runners. That is what made Fred

Led,and what made the NYC Marathon Fred. Hebelieved that it should be a world class people's

\ race, and that it is.

I asked TRRC's first president, Dan Cafffey, whathis recollections of Fred Lebow were. Dan said that heremembers Fred as a "business man" - tough when heneeded to be, and yet, ever the ambassador. Dan creditsFred's interest in marathoning as instrumental in fosteringthe development of the suburban running clubs. Fredbelieved that the middle of the packer and average runnerwere critical to the success of the sport. He used to meetwith the local club presidents and help with sponsors(when money was available), and talk philosophy - likekeeping races affordable. Dan also remembers times whenFred wanted to have our (now deflmct) Manhattan toPeekskill relay turned aroimd into a Peekskill to Manhattan Relay. (That was one argument Fred did not win.)

These are my memories. I'm glad I met Fred, andI'm glad he loved running. 1 know I will see him again.God will surely post Fred at the Pearly Gates where he'llerect a clock and there, under a NYRRC banner, he'llundoubtedly say "Good job! Congratulations!" Rest well,F red Lebow.

1994 Saguaro National Monument Labor Day RunBy Larry Lenahan

Recently, while on vacation in Tucson, AZ,I was lucky enough to come across an interesting andchallenging race. Although it was run on blacktop, you couldn't really call it a road race. It was morelike a primer for the Western States 100. The racetook place in one of the four National Parkssurrounding Tucson - Saguaro (pronounced Suaro)National Monument - East. There is also a West.

Here's why I view it as a primer to theWestern States 100. It started at 6:30 in the morning, the temperature was 85 degrees. All you could seefrom the starting line was the sun coming over themountains in the not too distant East (that is, notmuch other than cacti and more cacti). The distancewas 8.03 unshaded hot miles under a cloudless bluesky. Get the picture? I was in the desert! Not asandy desert like the Sahara, or a rocky, sparselyfoliated one like in Western California and Nevada, but one with plants and wildlife, more than 30species. Oh, by the way, this was the SouthernArizona Road Runners first race of the season.

Like an inexperienced runner, I foolishlyasked a couple of the officials what the course waslike. They told me (with a straight face), you startoff going downhill (true), run along a flat section andthen come back up from the floor of the canyon.Hey, this sounds like Putnam County. No sweat! The missed operative word was "canyon," not valley. No one bothered telling me, you'll develop shinsplints going into the canyon and hope your quadsand calves hold up coming out. It was more than asteady winding 300 foot drop (possibly 500) inapproximately 1.5 miles from the starting line to thefloor of the canyon. Then, about 2 miles of flatsfollowed by about a 3.5 mile climb to the rim.During most of the race, especially during the climb,I rarely saw more than 5 out of the 323 other runnerson the course, (and that's not because I that slow)other than when climbing. Then, foolishly, lookingup in hope that the end was near, I would see 1 or 2more runners on a newly visible switchback above.

On the plus side, the scenery wasspectacular. Space limits me from saying much morethan it was starkly beautiful: barren, yet heavilypopulated by majestic Saguaro cacti. Some of themwere over 50 feet tall, more than 150 years old andweight in excess of 8 tons. One last comment: Iwent back to the part a few days later with MaryJoanne and our niece to video tape the course. While

in the reception center, we were given the rareopportunity to see some of the native wildlife, twopacks - totaling about 10 - of wild javelinas (a smallversion of the wild boars found in Europe). Theyhad come by, as they evidently do every day, to sleepin the shade from the building.

The support was great and the mile markerswere clear. No splits were given, nor did theNational Park Rangers allow any traffic through, throughout the race. Although, Initially, I was a littlebothered because splits were not given, I ambeginning to think that's not all bad. Subconsciouslyit keeps you running at a realistic pace. That way,you don't get in trouble trying to run at a pace beyondyour capability.

The post race activities and wards, in 5 yearage groups, were handled well. Also, it wasinteresting to note, the times for the top 55-59 agegroup participants were generally faster than for the50-54 and some of the 45-49 top placers. The samepattern appeared at the Kingston Half-Marathon.Timewise, I was pleased: 1:21:16, place - in the backof the pack: 285/324. I also traveled the furthest.(We have to create some type of award for the runnerwho travels the farthest.)

If you want to try something different, trythe Tucson area. There are more trails than you canpossible imagine in this city of 500,000. Over 128 inSaguaro East alone. And the city and county areadding more all the time. If anyone is interested, Ihave a map or two to give you an idea of the number.

Taconic Masters Take Third In National 5K In SyracuseBy Nick Caswell

Why, I ask myself, do I do these trips? Picture this: five hours driving in the pouring rain; a constant barrageof wisecracks from Ken Filmanski; three accidents on Route #17; a struggling Packard; and a mess-up at the receptiondesk of the Hotel Syracuse. (I'm tired just thinking about it.) But all that aside, we got free accomodations and, therefore, more money to spend on beer. (Actually, it was Ken and Scott's money.) Oh what a night, early October 1963,1m e a n 1 9 9 4 .

The day of the race was bright, dry and breezy. The course was an out-and-back, fast and flat road in a residential section of Syracuse. I would recommend this race for PR purposes. Here are our results:

The G lad ia to r Ou t O f DoorsBy Debbie Yagoda

What do mail carriers and runners have in common? They eat and drink a lot, and often indiscriminately. Theythink the four food groups are pizza, beer, potato chips andHostess Snowballs. But this is not about food. It is about

being outside, and the discomforts, if not outright dangers, ofthe four seasons. (Yeah, I know we only have two seasons inNorthern Westchester; winter is October to May, and what'sleft is summer.)

Let's do summer: I figure the average mail carrier ison the road five times as long as the average runner doingeight miles, but both are likely to encounter more than a fewof Nature's practical jokes. For example, you're walking(running) down the street (road), being reasonably safety-conscious (I hope), but, consistent with human nature, you'reseeing the signts: flowers, birds, pretty women (men), and bythe time you look up to check on what's in front of you, IT'STOO LATE! You're encased, head to foot, in deceptivelyfragile looking white silk, test-weighted to ensnare a Chryslergoing sixty. You go to plucking it off your eyelids, yourelbows, your hair, looking like a deranged baseball coach, and, calming down somewhat from that exercise, youdiscover that the dispossessed arachnoid architect is sitting onyour shoulder, preparing to spin now and ask questions later.Depending on how you feel about lower forms of life on yourbody, you casually brush it off, or scream and crush. Surely,we've all seen performances say, from some poor soul on thestairs across the way, too grossed-out and hell-bent on gettingthe web off to be concerned by the open-mouthed stares fromonlookers who may be inclined to summon the paramedics.

Then there are various mushrooms that love the

humidity that you hate. You're making your innocent waythrough a nice little shortcut when you go ankle-deep intosomething fluorescent orange, or shiny chestnut brown thatlooks like melted plastic. I don't care how respectful you areof Nature, you have to be hard-dressed to come up with anyuse for fungi that look and smell like giant spoiled filetMignons. Not to mention bees that lay claim to mailboxes, flies the shape and nearly the size of stealth bombers thathave decided that there is no greater delicacy than the smallof your back, and so, even if you have avoided being food, you strain you neck muscles trying to smash the insect.

Should we all come through summer's obstacles ingood form, we're ready to take on next season's. Till then, good luck and good times!

When I Stopped Running:or...when discipline, hardwork & responsibility

went out the door.By Nick Caswell

This is not about a running injury; it is about attitude. Ifyou are injured, take no offense.

Philosophically speaking, events that occur are affectedby time, pass on, and are relegated to memory. Nothing new inthat. But it has some urgency if these events affect life. Istopped running twenty-five years ago, in the Autumn of 1969.Ages ago, right? Yes, but to me, it seems like yesterday, and ithas affected my life.

The Summer was over, and I decided I wasn't going tocrank out 100 mile weeks for anyone: not for my self and not formy college. 1 sounded too much alike discipline and hard work. So, I rebelled and decided not to start my second cross-countryseason at college. I would be come a free spirit instead.

So, in September, I told my coach I wasn't going to run.All he could comment on was the length of my hair. And that'swhen the rot set in.

So what happened? The comments, or excuses, if youwill, that follow, are a feeble explanation.

Events in my life just tumbled in sequence that summer. When I returned from my first year at college, I learned that ahigh school friend. Bill Crusie, had been killed in Vietnam. Hewas an All-American kid who played good football, basketballand baseball. He now has a 5K race named in his honor. Thencame the moon shot. Apollo 11 gave us pride, but cost a fortune.Everybody was "up" for this one. "Easy Rider" was released. We all lined up to see it. Some of us got "up" for this one, too.Charles Manson did what he did. The less said here, the better. The Mets continued to win. People like being New Yorkersagain. And, that accident called Woodstock happened. Thenumbers of people caught everyone unawares. You can't planthese things. My first Platonic Princess accompanied me allsummer. And my hair was growing. Far out!

So, these were my events. Simple, right? I should havebeen so lucky. But the counter-culture demanded more from me,or so I believed. Anyway, I stopped running. Too much regimentation; and 1 knew where that would lead, (I did?) Silly, nowthat I think about it. But I have no regrets. Why should I? Afterall, I'm running now. And, I've become more responsible to myself...the first step to becoming responsible to others. Somethingto think about when I run next!

When You Wish Upon A Star...The Road To The Disney World Marathon(Part II)By Mark Cooperman

"Roll'em, RoU'em, RoU'em, Oh, my legs are swollen...RoU'em, RoU'em, RoU'em, Raw Hide."That was the song of August for runner fast or slow in the steam bath summer of'94. My stop in August

on my trek to Walt Disney World was the little hamlet of "Injuryville." You know, that place between SevereAgony and Total Misery which leaves an average runner wondering "Who'll Stop the Pain?"

My first real bout with leg injuries has been a learning experience which can be boiled down to the simplest of components and summed up in two amazing words..."Dixie Cup." Yes, the little Dixie Cup is the magicbullet to soothe the sore muscles of my very tired legs. This little gem, when filled with a medicinal liquid, whichis not Scotch Whiskey...this time, has healing powers enough to make a believer of this doubter. That liquid is Justplain ole tap water, frozen into its Dixie Cup dispenser and applied to those sore muscles in a deliberate assault onpain.

So, where does a runner find these remedies, so useful and true? Just ask a fellow Taconic-mate and youmay be surprised what information is out there...right, Nancy Young and Tom Church? With two months to gobefore my first marathon and many potential aches ahead of me, common sense treatments can go a long way inbolstering a tired warrior's spirit.

The Superman syndrome is alive and well and living in Peekskill today. The "I'm not hurt too much"mind-set is one of the biggest hurdles that most runners will encounter when they're running hurt and beginning torecover their form after some time away from the track. In my case, the cryptonite causing me harm has been thenarrow-sightedness and beliefs 1 had in treating my aches with ace bandages and aspirin. As difficult as it is, theonly real treatment is rest and gradual retraining of the body to bring it back to the point prior to the injury. "Listento your body" isn't just a cliche for runners to repeat to themselves. That little voice you hear in your head mightjust be Tinkerbell, letting you know that you may have pushed your body just a little too far. Then again, it couldbe some hallucinogenic pain killer you've been taking to keep your tired soles on the road. Whatever it is, theultimate goal of finishing a training session should be tempered with a good dose of common sense. In my case, asin most runners' minds, running hurt may just be another step in the long road to marathon competition andcompletion. Hopefully, the Taconic support mechanism will be in place to prevent me from spending too muchtime in "Injuryville."

Look out, Mickey. That schlogging sound you hear behind you is the limping of this Taconic runner, hoton your little mouse feet...beware! (To be continued.)
